When we walked in I thought this seemed like a really cool place. The atmosphere was good and it seemed like everyone was having a great time enjoying their food and drinks. Our experience didn't meet those expectations. Af yet e we're seated it took at least 10 minutes for our waitress to take our drink order. She did not seem happy, she was not polite and did not make us feel welcomed. The best thing we ordered was the appetizer (spin dip). The pizza was not good. My son and I ordered fries chicken sandwiches and there was no meat only batter. This could have been an anomaly with the service but I will not go back. read more

Oh my gosh...so good! Service. Ambience. Food. All of it 5 stars. The grilled chicken and avocado sandwich was one of the best I've had in a long time. My family enjoyed the pepperoni pizza. Our waitress was outstanding. So so good. read more

Ordered the spicy pizza with a side Caesar. Pizza was good, although it could have used more sauce in my opinion. Salad was generic and not worth $5. Also ordered a milkshake, but another dessert came out instead. The waitress was crazy busy and so friendly, so I didn't bother mentioning it. Whatever dessert I had ended up being good! Would give this place another chance. read more

Decent food, but the service was absolutely awful. Our server took our drink order (beer and the mocktail sangria), then food order- drinks made it out after our food, which wouldn't have been a problem (stuff happens, I get it) but as we were seated next to the kitchen, we could see her texting on her phone and getting herself drinks. When we asked her about our drinks, she said the bartender was super busy and is working on them next. She then brings the wrong beer out and says my sangria might have alcohol in it but she wasn't sure. I'm pregnant, so obviously staying away from alcohol- my husband tried the sangria and it clearly was boozy, so it had to be remade. It was obvious our server had heard feedback from other people in the restaurant because she was loudly complaining to other servers about how they're short staffed and doing the best they can.. while still texting on her phone and hanging around the POS system in the kitchen. It took us like two hours to have a quick lunch because our server was inattentive and it ended up being a subpar experience. Definitely would not recommend- try another spot in the area. read more

Wow! This place did NOT disappoint. Service was stellar. And food was fantastic! I love the vibe for our whole family, but I want to come back for a date night. We had pizza (fig & prosciutto was incredible), and a delightful grilled chicken and avocado sandwich. The fries were delish! Definitely worth recommend. read more

This might have been the very best dinner I enjoyed while in the DC area for 4 nights. Right off, the appetizer Arancini was perfect. P E R F E C T ! Followed by a margarita pizza and a garden salad - everything tasted great. I prefer a thin crust, plenty of sauce, fresh ingredients, and lovely presentation. Not fancy but perfect. After all the extremely expensive and frankly not impressive restaurants we sampled, matchbox hit it out of the park. read more

Love going to Matchbox Penn Quarter for a bite to eat. The service was good but I was sad to hear the Veggie Pizza is no longer on the menu. It was my favorite...why remove it, bring it back Matchbox. I know I'm not the only one missing that specific great tasting pizza. Tried the other vegetarian option, corn & jalapeno pizza, it was not good. read more

This was my first time at the Matchbox in Penn quarter - previous visits were to the Chhinatiwn location. The new digs are very nice and much more open And spacious. Friendly service, great ribs and salads, restroom could use some more cleaning, but the table was very comfortable and clean.

Maurice was great!! Very nice and fast service!! The food was ok First time at this location read more

Nice spot with very friendly staff. The place is clean and has big tables with booths which is nice. The food was just okay to me though - nothing really standout. I had the giant meatball and it was okay, and I had the crab soup which was also okay. The best thing about here was the service, as my server was very friendly and so was the host. read more

I've been going to Matchbox since the day they opened on 2003. And I have, every time, ordered the same thing. The Fire & Smoke pizza. I never tired of it all these years. BUT, today everything changed. We haven't been to Matchbox since before the pandemic. The Fire & Smoke pizza we had today was awful. The crust seemed to be mass produced. The crust used to be amazing, hand made, fresh, tasty, etc. The cheese on the pizzas was of inferior quality. The basil on top wasn't even fresh. It was withered and dry and sparse. Even the sauce was dry and not nearly as delicious as it used to be. After 18 years of being a loyal customer, I will never return. Very disappointing. read more

My wife and I are from out of town, and walked in for a late lunch, as we were starving. The pizza was out of site! Also the ribs and chicken were sooo good! When you go, ask for Maurice. Maurice was the best!! Polite, attentive, and full of recommendations. This is a must stop! read more

We were looking for a place on our way back from the Capital. Had the fish and chips, wife had the Chicken Alfredo. Both were excellent. Service was also excellent. Attentive, but not bothersome. read more

WOW!! This place is so good and not to mention the staff are amazing too! Melissa was our waitress and you will not be disappointed with her recommendations on what to get. It's a cozy feeling and loud but not too bad. I had the Crispy Half Chicken, the asparagus and the mashed potatoes were so delicious! Great all around and did not disappoint!! Will be coming back! read more

Delicious food and incredible service. Our waitress was so sweet! Where we were seated had someone's personal belongings that didn't get fully cleaned up but other than that the ambiance was great. Will be returning next time I'm in town! We had three people in our party and split the table bread, 3 mini burgers and a small pizza. Perfect amount of food at a reasonable price! read more

I was thrilled to see that the Penn Quarter did not lose it's Matchbox, as it's one of our go-to restaurants before or after a game or event at Capital One Arena! Sliders are always perfection and the pizza was really tasty! Maurice was our server and he was attentive and very personable. Thank you! read more

The food was great loved the chicken and waffles? The crabcake sandwiches were so good. And the chicken sandwich with my favorite part. Everyone was so nice and considerate. The music wasn't too loud. And it wasn't too quiet. read more

We had a great lunch! Our server was polite and quick. The simple salad was fresh with plump rehydrated cherries, a tiny bit of cheese and just the right thickness of red onion and amount of dressing not to be soggy but be tasty. The peppermint pizza was tasty and just the right amount of cheesy. My 10yo was excited to be seated in a booth with a view of the TV. Five starts all around. read more

Place should be renamed 'SALTLICK - Penn Quarter' with the slogan "where you serve yourself!" Somehow they managed to make a vegetable pizza taste like salt - SOOO much salt that you will have sores on your tongue. Sadly, had to ask for my own water, silverware, everything's, refill of water, and also ask for my bill/check when it was time to go!! WHY AM I TIPPING?? read more

Stopped in to fill that burger craving that we all get every now and then. They had pizza too, so why not? My friend and I started with six mini burgers and they were perfect. Most sliders tend to be a bit dry, but these were perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. For pizza, we ordered the fire + smoke, and it was pretty good, with a nice, crisp crust, but the pizza flavors were less remarkable than you would suspect from the menu (Gouda? Chipotle? Garlic? Hardly tasted any of it). The biggest issue for me was that I felt a little gross after I finished eating, and I'm not one to usually feel that way after eating burgers/pizza, so maybe the food was more greasy than I realized? I think I would return, but I will probably stick to the burgers next time. read more

matchbox - 14" Fire and Smoke Pizza - New American Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

See all

Food was great. No soap in thee bathrooms. Our waitress was sweet. Would come back again.

One 14" pizza, half plain/half meat, delivery. First, the pizza was pretty ok. Not great, but good. Def not worth the money, would be a quality purchase at a lower price point. But the disappointing part was that in our online order instructions (in the instructions for both halves), we requested EXTRA sauce on the pizza (not on the side). But when we got the pizza, there was barely any sauce on it at all (none on the side either), even less than we would had expected had we not requested extra much less requesting extra. It made what would had been a very good pizza bland and boring. So two issues: The pizza doesn't have enough sauce and our requests for extra sauce on both halves was completely ignored. Disappointing especially for the price. read more

Maybe it was an off day. The hostess seemed like she was bothered by having to interact with the guests coming in. The rice for the ahi tuna poke bowl was so odd - ever see the clip where Hersha Patel rinses her cooked rice? Yeah, it tasted rinsed... and very al dente. I left feeling cold-shoulder vibes from the place. read more

Has a great late lunch at Matchbox today. It's a holiday and there was a wizards game going, so the restaurant was busy. Thanks to Pierre for great service! We enjoyed side salads, a couple beers, and split a pizza. Everything came out great tasting. I also left a bag on my chair and didn't notice until a bit later. I called and spoke to Nanoush (sorry if I've misspelled your name!) who located the bag and kept it somewhere safe till I could come back and pick it up. Thanks for such kind and considerate service! We will definitely be back! read more

Comfortable seating and cozy vibes. Very large amounts of food and the mushrooms add a perfect taste to the creamy sauce. The servers were friendly and attentive. The bread that came with the dish is huge and enough for 2-3 people. Fast service. read more
