Came here with friends for dinner. Originally we were supposed to be a larger party of 7 and I was able to call ahead and make a reservation. That was super convenient. In the end our party ended up being smaller and they accommodated our party change. We ordered the Fire & Smoke Pizza, fettuccine Alfredo, chimichurri steak and frites, and a pitcher of sangria. We loved the sangria! It was fruity and refreshing and enough for our group to have a few glasses each. The fettuccine was great and served with a yummy garlic bread. A perfectly adequate pizza joint. Matchbox has a pretty decent pizza, probably some of the better pizzas I've eaten on the east coast that aren't in New York City. The ambiance is mildly casual with sports broadcasted on TV and an active bar but you could also dress up here and not feel super out of place here if you wanted to. The interior is comfortable, looks very postmodern with a semi-open Kitchen and a brick oven that can be seen from the entrance. In my opinion I love seeing the kitchens and the pizza oven, it's just cool. I found that my server was very quick and nice, unfortunately I wasn't able to catch her name. Although the wait time during the dinner rush was around 30-45 minutes, we were seated in a bit less than 30, amazing. The service and food were quick, we were given water and ordered around 2 minutes after being seated. The food arrived in around 20-25 minutes, reasonable enough for what a colleague and I ordered. For the food we split: The Meatball & Fried Calamari appetizer, a split 14-inch pizza of the Pepperoni + Hot Honey and the Holy Grail Margherita. Finally I finished the meal with a slice of NY cheesecake and blueberry sauce. The meatball itself and the tomato sauce were nicely seasoned with a light note of spice to it to excite the palate. The meatball was quite juicy and delicious. The plating I found was weird by having the piece of garlic bread that comes with the meatball to be completely covering the meatball. This could be a decision to make it a surprise or something but I would've just preferred having the garlic bread on the side. The garlic bread itself is the weakest part of the dish, it's just a flat bread of pizza dough which is nice but it wasn't crusty or crunchy enough for a textural difference and the garlic flavor is just SLIGHTLY there, I'd prefer a more garlic punch with a possibly more herby flavor and baked a bit more. I would still order this dish but the garlic bread is not at all noteworthy. The Fried Calamari is extremely nothing to write home about. It pretty much exists to add nice texture, it's unseasoned and mostly carried by the lemon aioli. I liked the fried Jalapeños in the dish more than the calamari because of its stronger and actually noticeable flavor. I would not order this again. The Pizza is actually pretty damn good. I liked the balance of the Margherita a lot. I liked how cheesy the pizza is, the basil had a nice freshness and the tomato sauce had a balanced sweetness. Now the pepperoni + hot honey slice I liked a little less. I loved the spicy vodka sauce for the pizza and the pepperoni was cooked to a satisfying crisp, however the hot honey was a bit heavy-handed in my opinion. I found the pizza a bit TOO sweet, I would've liked it more if the hot honey was hotter and there was less of it. Something I noticed is that the center of the pizza gets soggy after only a couple minutes, I would've liked it if the pizza was baked more. I would definitely order the margherita pizza again and ask for it to be cooked a bit more. Finally, the Cheesecake was a nice highlight of the meal. It had that sour tart flavor that any good NY cheesecake should have. I also liked that their graham cracker crust is minimal. Personally I like the graham cracker crust but should be kept at a minimum or else the cake gets too bitter. It was very rich and the blueberry compote on top is nice. Nice blueberry fragrance but it's not overly sweet, the whole blueberries dotted inside the compote still have their slight crisp texture and it added a nice layer to the dish. I would order again. Side note: All the food of appetizers and entrees all came at the same time which is a little strange but I can understand why because we came in during the dinner rush(~7PM). Overall, I would eat here again if I was nearby in Washington D.C. but I would never actively make the drive out to Matchbox or any other of its other locations. read more

They take reservations. One of the good meals we had while in DC. It wasn't busy when we arrived which was around 6p on a Friday night but it sure did get busy later that we saw our server/waitress running around. She was good though and tried her best to check in on us. Food wasn't too bad. Loved their brick oven pizza. It was thin and crispy. I appreciate that we could do half and half so the kids can have their option and the adults can have theirs. Love the different specialty they offered as well. The pepperoni was too spicy for my son, so he ended up picking it off but they do put quite a bit on there. The bacon Bianca could use more topping though. My other son wanted the fish and chips. The batter wasn't all that great but it was edible. In addition to pizza my husband and I shared the chicken burger which was good. We ended the meal with the s'more which I believe was $10. All their desserts were $10. I saw someone order a cheese cake and it was a hefty slice. The s'more was too much for us group of 4 though, we couldn't finish it due to it being soooo sweet, which we knew what we were getting into. If I had the choice I would've gone with the cheesecake but kids and their s'more, you know lol. Not a bad dinner option place. read more

I went here for lunch and was able to get seated very quickly. Our food arrived fairly quickly, so it was convenient when we only had limited time to get back to the office. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and it was fair. They definitely heavy in the toppings and that was great. The pizza was very thin, so if that is your preference this would be great for you. I'm more of a pan pizza style person, so this did not really hit the a lot for me. The sauce was good...not overly sweet. I'm not one to leave bad reviews because I only make reservations at places my family and I enjoy. I made reservations for NYE months in advance to prepare for our trip to DC. After landing the night before, I received a voicemail letting me know they were cancelling our reservations to close early for NYE. They didn't offer help making reservations elsewhere or future comp meals, nothing. Things I hope they consider in the future: - please do not make times available in advance when you have pre-determined that you will not be able to offer - contact customers sooner than 24 hours when you know you won't be open - offer some sort of comp meals to your customers to make good on a bad situation you as a business created. read more

When I give a review it's with careful consideration because customer service is a way of life. After a long day of touring the city my son and I settled on this place to eat. The atmosphere is perfect for sports fans and groups just wanting to grab a drink and dinner. We sat on the high chairs adjacent to the bar and waited to be attended to, not realizing after we got the menus we had to get up and ask the bar attendant for what we wanted. With optimism, I took my mother to this bistro for lunch. The Chicken Alfredo dish which I ordered took me by surprise; it was very tasty - the sauce was creamy and the pasta cooked al dente. However, my mom did not have such a great time there. Unfortunately her Cobb salad turned out to be disappointing too, especially the avocado which had a plastic-like texture and lacked any flavor at all. In addition, we were not satisfied with the level of service provided by waitstaff either. We felt like they wanted us to hurry up with our order or anything else we asked them for would be done half-heartedly. Having said that even though everything about my meal was perfect in itself, it still left much to desire because of how awful her salad tasted and poor service received overall from waitstaff members' side.So yes indeed I will go back there only if they maintain their current standard of preparing pasta dishes but this time around let other meals also meet these standards as well as improving on customer care skills among employees serving clients like ourselves. Not the mouth-watering crabcake sandwich that I so come to enjoy and brag and recommend to friends. Curious, I did research to discover that the "original" Matchbox was purchased. So dissappointing. Ordered the "crispy chicken", which turned out to be charred (burnt) chicken. A total waste of my money! New management should have kept what was previously in place. read more

On a mild sunny summer day in Washington, D.C. during the COVID-19 pandemic, I got a nice outdoor table in a shaded area at this Matchbox location. There was no line, The Smith up the block. The food and service here is solid and you won't be unsatisfied. I went with this menu item and had no regrets: BBQ Bacon Burger - applewood smoked bacon, pickles, tomatoes, crispy onion straws, tillamook cheddar I think the Matchbox chain is awesome with their beautiful wood furniture, chill-by-the-fireplace-vibe, and higher-end bar cuisine. For whatever reason, it's not usually high on my list of places frequent for food, but it is worth a trip especially if you've never been! read more

You couldn't taste the onion, and it was mostly breading. The ginormous meatball was good, but the sauce on the pasta that came with it was the best part! Seriously, it was the best thing I had here. The wood-fired garlic bread that came with it was good as well. We also ordered a 14" matchbox meat pizza. The toppings and crust were delicious.
