I had the best French toast of my life here. It's on the back of the menu and I got the cinnamon toast. Don't be fooled, there are no nuts in it like the menu says. I can't say more about the French toast because it was just that good. We got tipsy/drunk off the bottomless mimosas. That's a beautiful thing. Apparently the waiter was being a little rude but I didn't notice because I was too busy eating and drinking lol. That's the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. I went to Madhatter approximately 3 months ago and it was a bad experience. Bartenders are snobbish. There were rude college kids all over the dance floor. I arrived early and bartenders never appreciated generously tip. I believe they are used to college kids who do not like to tip but would come in and have fun. I was there for good 5 hours because I wanted to dance that night. Music was great. My experience that night was horrible as I lost my wallet and phone the same night which definitely has nothing to do with Madhatter however the fact that I went there and that occurred inferred that it might be a great place for me to hang out again. read more

I have been here before for brunch, and had a great experience! However, this review is based off dinner. My husband and I decided to have a night out in the city and stopped by here for dinner since we had a good experience for brunch. Our server came and saw us right away and got our order. We ordered everything at once since we were starving. Our drinks took about ten minutes to come out. I would maybe say this is acceptable if they were busy, but they weren't. My husband ordered a dos equis (bottled beer) and I ordered a pina colada. We didn't order any appetizers and now I wish we had because our food literally took forever to come out!!!! I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich with french fries and my husband ordered a burger well done. Now I worked as a server in the past and I know well done burgers or steaks can take a little bit longer, but 30 minutes? On top of that our fries were cold. Our server was somewhat concerned and kept saying our food was on the way, but it just never arrived. I still gave this place 3 stars because their brunch is amazing, but I just don't think I had the best experience here for dinner. I may just stick to this location for brunch. read more

Received piss poor service on 10/23/20 during brunch hours. As (2) African American males dining in, we were served (2) separate times with insects floating in our grapefruit juices. My friends and I had good experiences previously at Madhatter. That is until last Friday night when one of my friends were being yanked out of the place by securities at 10 PM even though he is visibly sober and polite. We ended up paying more than a hundred buck for a terrible experience. We arrived early into the night, around 9:30 and took five seats at the bar. Our bartender was decent and receptive. As the waiters began to clear the tables and chairs away for the dancefloor, however, things took a turn. A friend and I went out for a smoke when my other friend and his girlfriend also went out, the guy being carried out by securities. Noted that our tab was still in there and my friends' purses as well. Apparently, a worker from the place just came up to my friend and order him and his girlfriend to leave without any reason why. When my friend pushed back, the security called another security over, told him that my friend was drunk. The other security, then, just forced my friend to leave by yanking him off his seat. Noted that other seats were still occupied and no one else received this treatment but my friend's. He was still visibly sober and politely asked what did he do even when he was being carried out of the place. The only answer he received was that he "did not follow the rule" and he was drunk. When my friend said he wasn't, the security just flat out told him "my place. my rule." Later, when my friend talked to a Hispanic employee from Madhatter on the street (he's also Hispanic), The guy just said this is typical behavior by the securities. He said they would be fire soon. I sure hope so, because that was the worst treatment our group has received from ANY BAR in DC. The rest of my group still had to walk back into the place to get our bill, purses and credit card back before we leave for the night. Never again, Madhatter. read more

I went for dinner on a Thursday evening with a friend. I enjoyed the California burger and the French fries. The service was excellent. I really enjoyed the tea they served with our beverages. However, we both found our cocktails to be bland. The decor was like an older Americana bar with some Alice in Wonderland posters and decorations, but nothing to make it worth a visit for the theme alone. Madhatter is very similar to Sign of the Whale, McFadden's (RIP), and a host of other college aged bars in the DuPont area. As a local, who also attended undergrad in the Metro area, this bar is usually a reunion of sorts because I always see someone I know when I go. The best part of this bar is the Mad Hatter signature drink that you always want to share with your group because you'll be dead drunk if you drink it yourself. This weekend I decided to go a little off the unbeaten path. That path found me at Madhatter located in NW DC. Downtown area so pretty lively and you also have Chinatown!! The venue was very spacious with one huge bar downstairs and two smaller bars located on the second floor. There was a minimal crowd when my friends and I first got there and the dance floor was full of people passed their liquid courage hour. Nonetheless, we ventured into the dark abyss that was Madhatter. The upstate part of the bar was cool but a little to cramped for my liking. We decided to go back downstairs and see what the dance floor was talking about earlier. The dance floor was open and spacious and there was even security standing nearby to take care of any bottles or trash you had while boogieing. So it was cool to not have to pretend I had something in an empty beer bottle for a change. The Dj..... hmmmm is The DJ was sub par at best. It's like he was KYLE XY and he woke in the mid 2000s. He couldn't talk me the name of a single song from 2015-2017. Buy some stroke of pure luck I was getting ready to exit stage left when T shirt by migos came on so you know your boy had to do his thing. It's a good song but your not getting off the hook that easy. There have been all too many intern-laden Thursday nights. This place is mostly underage GW kids with a fake ID and too much of their parents money to spend on $8 Mangoritas (which are delish btw). Much like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Madhatter comes in two personalities: Day and night (Oh, and by the way, can someone applaud me for fitting three classical fictional characters in one sentence? #nerdingout). During the daytime (until 8 PM), they are a waiter-service restaurant. But at night, it transforms itself into a nightclub. I have never observed nor heard of such drastic shift in ambiance and function, but first time for everything, right? My experience at Madhatter only consists of the latter, so my review only reflects the nightlife. This is an ideal place to start if you are barhopping with a large group. Go to the second floor where it's not so crowded and get The Hat, a gallon of sweet boozy drink (to this day, that night is a blur and I am not quite sure what was exactly in it) served in a plastic top hat. Plentiful and fun, it's a great drink to share with your friends and start the night. When your party is sufficiently buzzed, head down to the first floor and dance to their admittedly uninspired music. Be warned: the place gets extremely packed. They really pack you like sardines; expect no breathing room and get ready to mingle with sweaty bodies. Once you feel like you need to come up for air, move on to the next bar and never look back. Overall, Madhatter is quite the experience: It's whimsical, it's playful, it's a madhouse. read more
