Another DC restaurant group still charging an "I82" fee and then they come around with their card reader and a default 20% tip preselected on top of the fee as if I82 wasn't an effort to reduce reliance on tips. As always seems to be the case, this place is run by a restaurant group, because I have yet to see a small independent establishment pull this nonsense. Food is passable albeit not great. Just note that in the name of "transparency" the prices are hiding the actual costs behind this fee. If you want to round it out to 20% with a tip, at least the fee tells you exactly how much that is. I have to assume the 10% fee is going to increased wages because that's what I82 is about. If the restaurant group is pocketing any of that balance then they are just stealing from their staff, which might explain why the staff is not upfront about the rationale for the fee. read more

They do a great job of refilling coffee and tea in the afternoon. That's rare. The food is good, and so are the portions. Not too huge, but enough to forgive a good friend for stealing a bite. The service we received was completely unacceptable. The server was visibly distracted by a fight happening nearby, and because of that, she messed up our order. When we calmly told her we no longer wanted the food, she became angry instead of correcting the mistake. Things escalated for no reason -- she lied, called the police on us, and kicked us out even though we did nothing but state that we didn't want the incorrect order. I mean that about everything coffee, water, your silverware m, getting a menu that they didn't seat you with, the check and of course your food all come slowly. Food is solid. It's very basic but sometimes basic done well is what you need. I will say the home fries made not home fries as I know them. These were just unseasoned chopped potato wedges which is not home fries. The 3 stars are simply from the staff that was there at 3am! They were so lit and vibey! They were attentive and welcoming. They made the experience. The food was TRASH tho! It tasted bland and processed! They didn't have any chicken tenders and the bar was closed! This would be an AMAZING dinner if they fixed their menu! They need to create a menu they can master or at least practice the dishes they have! The food was so bad! It feels and looks dirty in there! Just not a place where you feel sanitization is priority for them. It's old and dingy! They need a remodel/renovation! It's about time. Took a seat on the patio on a Sunday morning. Was a great spot for the puppy to people watch and was a decent spot for breakfast. It was good, classic fare at decent prices with good service. I wouldn't say I'm dying to go back, but it hit all the right notes on the search for some good breakfast food. Stayed in Adams Morgan, and The Diner was recommended when we arrived into town later than anticipated. It's a 24-hr "diner" that has more of a pub/coffee shop vibe, or maybe a college town cafe. Definitely appeared to have a "local/regulars" type of vibe. Servers were very friendly and informative, which we appreciated. All the food we ordered (reuben, nachos, soup) was well-prepared, would return again for the quality of the food in this diner. Another DC favorite of ours nestled in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. We had not been in a while so this was on our must visit list for our quick trip to DC. I have to be honest we did have an issue with our order both of our orders came out wrong but to me things will happen but it is how the establishment handles it that makes for an amazing dining experience. The individual handling the kitchen orders was amazing. He promptly and quickly got our food remade and out to our table. The food was amazing, fresh, and hot. The bite of fresh toast was light and the best fresh toast I have had. We went for an early lunch and there was a good crowd but did not have to wait for a table which was nice and all in the timing as this place can get very crowded and very loud. The Diner is a nice little spot in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Their "Open 24 Hours Thursday through Sunday" speaks to the clientele that they cater toward. We were coming in for lunch on a Thursday around noon and had the place mostly to ourselves. Our large party showed up in several groupings and situated ourselves on the wall where booth seating was separated from the chairs by sensible and well-worn wooden tables. Large mirrors lined the walls behind me and the stainless steel kitchen hustled behind the bar in front of me. Food is just as practical, specializing in... well, diner food. You're going to find burgers, sandwiches and breakfast items. Oh! They offer tater tots or onion rings as well as the standard fries at no extra cost. Tots! I got the classic cheeseburger and tots and left with a full belly. I was a little disappointed that there were no condiments on the sandwich; ketchup on the table, but no mustard or promised cup of mayo on the side so it was a little dry. Service started strong but trailed off after the food was delivered. The server was really good about offering to break up the check in a way that compromised without going individual and brought out the meals in a reasonable time. After that, though, I don't think I saw them again and sat with an unfilled water for most of my meal. The Diner is a solid option without being particularly memorable. read more

We sat at the counter and were able to see them pushing out plates. The kitchen staff works hard and extremely fast. The service is not that great but the food was overall good. I got the French toast and fried chicken. The chicken was shot and crispy to my liking and the French toast was okay. I've had better but it did the job. If you've gone out to breakfast enough times in NW DC you've come into contact with the Tryst family of establishments. A handful of diners and breakfast spots scattered across the city with the same basic menu items switched up a little bit. Each one has its own vibe (and quality of service) -- picking your favorite Tryst trading co. location might be akin to a horoscope. For me, Tryst itself comes the closest to being the ideal execution of whatever their big idea is. Right down the street from Tryst, just a few doors down, is The Diner. An interesting little spot, it fills a niche that holds a special place in my heart -- a 24 hour diner. Sort of shocking to me that it's the first I've known about in the area, but it's been there for a while so I guess they cornered the market. Just to get it out of the way, the food is great. I've done traditional breakfast foods here and I've done cheeseburgers and haven't been let down yet. That being said, where this shines is in the uniqueness of a full kitchen that's open past midnight right on 18th. As a brunch spot, it's just so-so (hence my middling rating... saying "it's fantastic if you go at 2am! Not so much at 11am" isn't 5-star material). It's laid out in a way that maximizes space, which means if it's busy you're going to be elbow to elbow with the people on either side of you, and my god is it LOUD. The food is great, but it's hard to screw up eggs, toast and sausage, and I could make it at home for less or go to Tryst for a slightly nicer experience. But boy oh boy does this hit past midnight. The atmosphere in the post-midnight hours on a weekend is fun and eclectic, almost like you walked into a staff party and they're nice enough to both let you stay AND serve you.
