Went here and got huevos rancheros and a cold brew. Both were good huevos had good flavor and I enjoyed the overall dish. I think the meat could used more seasoning it tasted bland against the sauce. 1. The AC was out and it was hot as hell in there 2. There was bad service I've had before and then there was coupe bad service. 3. It took a while for the waitress to come over to get my order. 4. I'm in the middle of a zoom call and instead of her putting the drinks directly in front of my laptop or to the right of my laptop she proceeded to reach over me during the zoom call to put the drink on my side. I've never had a waiter reach across the screen on an obvious Zoom call to put the drink on my side. 5. She brings the machine to Pay and clicks through the screen of what was on the order to the payment screen. I asked her can you please go back so I can see what was on the screen she proceeds to just stand there holding the pay machine and I say I'm not going to pay unless I see what my bill was she proceeds to say she can't go back and that she will show me what I paid after I paid and if she needs to, she will give me back money. I said absolutely not. I need to see it. She proceeds to just keep standing there to try and force me to pay without seeing my bill. I have never been at an establishment that not only will not let you see your bill, but tells you to pay and then you can see your bill. She does this about three times and we're at a standstill to the part where I say I will leave if you do not show me my bill and I can call and pay for it afterwards and then she's able to go to the register and get a copy of my bill which it shouldn't have been that difficult and then I say I would actually like to talk to the manager. 6. The manager was pointless. If I was a manager, I would be completely remorseful and apologetic and he was neither. the main question he kept asking was is there something wrong with the bill. Which I responded, what's going on a customer should be able to see the bill without going through all these hoops and he asked me again. Was there a question about the Bill. I responded again. I should be able to see my bill without all of these other their questions. This was a disappointing experience at a restaurant. They drove out of my way to go to. A customer should not have to call a manager over just to see a copy of their bill. To keep standing there after I said I want to a copy expecting me to pay without seeing the bill is wild and unacceptable. I seem to always have problems with this dc "chain", well chain in disguise. The food is safe for the most part. Classic diner food with an unnecessary up-charge for having a nice menu graphic design. I have never had a good coffee here. I ordered a cappuccino, with plant based mylk but I still have been able to get a good froth with my at-home espresso machine. As you can see, this is notttttt a cappuccino. The food was solid 3.5/5, nothing super amazing but good variety on the menu. The tofu tostada looked like a very healthy option (wish I got that) and the breakfast burrito also a hearty choice. Good on our friends for picking those. I shared a burger and the coupe royale. I really liked their scrambled eggs, it was not dry and tasteless like many but had a lovely texture. The pancake was a little dry though. The burger was a bit dry but maybe because it was well done? The service was a bit iffy... we all detected a little bit of "offness" like maybe she was overwhelmed and didn't have much patience.... and didn't like that we were hovered over during paying the check. I just had my last meal at The Coupe. Food & service were fine. BUT...The Coupe applies a deceptive 10% "service fee" to every bill. It supposedly is because of Initiative 82, which raised the minimum wage for tipped workers to $10/hour. I don't understand why any restaurant needs to add a bogus fee that confuses customers, hides the full cost of a meal, and leads to reduced tips for workers -- when they pay servers $8 BELOW the full minimum wage. If costs are rising, The Coupe should just raise prices, so that customers understand their bill and so that 20% tipping is still the norm. Most restaurants survive without a service fee -- so can The Coupe. read more

I've visited this café several times, including once when I left an average review, but after today I won't be returning. I ordered a small oat-milk vanilla latte, expecting a quick, simple drink. Instead, the drink tasted like lukewarm milk, and when I politely asked for a refund, the experience became incredibly uncomfortable. The same barista from a previous negative interaction handled my order and greeted me with a smirk I should've recognized as a red flag. When I asked for the refund, she called over someone who identified himself as Martin, the assistant manager. He seemed unsure how to process a refund, told me the transaction was voided--even though it still appeared on my card--and then handed me a regular takeout receipt while insisting it counted as proof of cancellation. I didn't feel confident in either explanation. Throughout the exchange, both the barista and the manager spoke to each other in another language, smirked, and acted as if I was causing a disruption. At one point, the manager even said he "didn't want my seven dollars," which felt unnecessary and dismissive. Regardless of the price, any customer deserves a respectful interaction when a drink isn't right. The overall handling of the situation made me feel unwelcome, judged, and deeply uncomfortable. The bacon was limp and barely cooked! I asked them to bring cooked bacon. I ordered an iced latte with whole milk and an extra shot of espresso. They brought me what looked like a glass of iced milk! I took the glass back in and explained to them that it did not have an extra shot. And ask them to add a shot. they brought it back with slightly more espresso. It was still very pale. Do not go before 7:30am if you want to order from their menu. While the hours state they are open on the door and on the table placard that they open at 7:00am, when we got there at 7:05am on July 1st, we were rudely advised that the kitchen does not open until 7:30am. While they did allow us to sit at a table and wait, they made certain we knew we were not welcome there. If we were not with our granddaughter who wanted their chocolate chip pancakes, we would not have waited. We visit DC every two months and take our granddaughter there. Just had a horrible experience at this restaurant, not long before closing time (8 pm)...but before closing time (about 7:45 pm) : I sat outside on patio (street level) where I saw one other table being served. I sat for some 10 minutes. Waitress came out several times to tend to that table - seemed oblivious to me. I got her attention as she was about to go inside, and she said, You're ok?" I responded I'd like to get served. She went inside - and about 10 minutes went buy, withe neither she nor anyone else coming outside to attend to me. I spoke through a large window as she walked near on the inside. I again asked if I could order something. She asked if I had come inside first. I responded that I didn't and didn't know that I needed to do that. She responding telling me (as though she needed to educate me) that I should have done that...that I should have known to do that. She further said that the kitchen was closing in 5-10 minutes, essentially refusing to take my order. She was dismissive. I asked for the manager. I came in and spoke to the manager--who was respectful and who did restate that it was standard for folks to come in and then be seated outside, and that the kitchen was in the process of closing down (I showed her on my Apple Watch that it was 8:57 and they advertised 8:00 pm). But there didn't seem to be any signage saying customers needed to check inside first. But more importantly--even if I missed some signage, the waitress was aware that I was not being served - and just didn't serve me, and didn't send anyone else if she couldn't or refused to do it herself. I respectfully explained my disappointment in customer service to the manager, and was allowed to make an order to go - three minutes before the kitchen closed, the waitress blurted out as she passed the manager with a smirk on her face (as though she was holding back from laughing)...in the presence of the manager as I was describing the waitresses attitude and body language: "You're still at it?" The manager did acknowledge to me, when I asked her if she thought this was appropriate, "no." Hopefully it was addressed in-house. But the waitress acted arrogant, entitled - and I'm not sure if it was just her personality, a bad day, being racist...but whatever it was, it was not ok. I got my order. Ate outside on the patio with no drink...my carry out order that was supposed to be a delightful dine in. The food was good, but with the horrible service experience, the spirit of enjoyment of the food was dulled. I don't wish anyone to lose his/her job in such times as this...but this, was totally unacceptable and hopefully there were some consequences. That is not good for business in DC - regardless. No one apologized. The food should have been on the house after all of that. But it wasn't. I haven't been to this restaurant in several years. This really threw me off guard - and felt like it raised my blood pressure a bit. Reminded me of some nasty old times growing up in SC. Truly hope it wasn't that. read more
