breakfast sandwiches; bacon, egg, cheese; egg, avocado, cheese

Ayeeee!!! This place is a low key hit!! The customer service was warm and welcoming! And the owner constantly reminds you that he's trying his best! And we wish him the very best! It basically a small cafe but very clean and neat, with plenty of natural light. We came here after an intense workout and the breakfast was fantastic. We both ordered breakfast sandwiches with egg, cheese, and (mines) with bacon. The food was freshly made and tailored, and the owner blended fresh fruit smoothies. Prices were decent and portion sizes were excellent! Street parking is available, but in a neighborhood, so it can get busy. But overall, Highly recommend!

Had a great down home breakfast with a great vibe at Cafe on 9th! Attentive service with chill music in the background! Family-owned with the brother on the grill and espresso machine, sister on the juice bar and mom's keeping everyone entertained! Run don't walk to this place!

Quite possibly one of the best breakfast burritos I've had since moving to Washington DC! Also the owner was extremely friendly. Would highly recommend Cafe on 9th if you are looking for a quick, priced-well breakfast!

Decided to stop by on a rainy Friday morning and was delighted! I got the bacon egg and cheese on a croissant and it was very good! Customer service was great also, very welcoming and friendly. There was ample seating as well.

Had breakfast at Cafe on 9th, it's a great spot with outdoor seating. We got the bacon egg and cheese sandwich, red velvet waffle and avocado toast with eggs and hash brown. Everything came out delicious. The sandwich was buttery, the waffle was so soft and they were really generous with their avocado portion. The owners are sweet and it was an nice experience overall. We plan on coming back!

When she came she was sweet but she may have come to the table 3 times in an hour and a half. Why aren't you checking on your tables periodically? Why do we have to walk to the hostess stand to find you? Why does the food take so long to come out when parking fees are atrocious ($30-40)? Why do we then have to wait 15 mins for a to go box and another 15 mins for the check? We also had a bday girl with us and were told they don't have candles or bday cake for them, and proceeded to give us a dessert menu. We then asked to speak with the manager who didn't have much to say or offer. We just want you, sir, to retrain. Food: Food was pretty good but my mom's came out ice cold with the wrong sides. The calamari was chewy and on a bed of uncooked spinach. Was that a garnish or were we supposed to eat it was my question? The chicken and biscuits were good and the salmon hash was good. That sauce on both is really nice.

I've been on a shakshuka kick lately, so I opted for the the Sweet Potato Shakshuka, which is described as: Sweet Potato Curry, with Chickpeas and Sunny Eggs with a the chicken add-on - gotta get that protein in, after all. This was one of the most unique shakshukas I'd ever had... It literally tasted like a curry dish you might get at your local Indian restaurant, with a bit of a brunch flair to it. The curry itself had a wee bit of spice and was a bit sweet - but that could have been from the sweet potatoes. The chicken was served in a bowl on the side, which felt a bit... odd... I would've expected it to be incorporated into the main dish. It was kind of bland and a bit lukewarm, so I don't know that I'd order that again... but I would definitely order this again!

When I realized the service charge had already been included and asked for the extra tip to be removed, the waiter told me he does not receive any portion of the 18% charge. I asked whether the expectation was for customers to leave a total of 38%, and I was told that is how it works at this restaurant and in Washington DC. I found the billing and tipping process confusing and misleading. I won't be back.

The standout of the morning was the breakfast side potatoes--crispy, seasoned perfectly, and easily something I'd come back for. The breadbasket came with three pastries, which felt a bit smaller than expected, but the almond croissant more than made up for it. On the heartier side, the chicken and waffles were extremely filling thanks to the dense waffles, so definitely a dish to tackle with an appetite. One of the biggest surprises was the brunch salad with salmon, which ended up being one of the best salads I've had in a long time--fresh, balanced, and satisfying. The breakfast sandwich was another highlight: so good that it's now the new standard I'll compare all other breakfast sandwiches to. The smoked salmon bagel was also a fun experience, served deconstructed so you can build each bite exactly how you like it. Not everything was a hit--the French toast wasn't my favorite--but the overall meal was strong enough that it barely detracted from the experience. Brunch offers a few additions beyond the regular breakfast menu, but overall it's very similar to their standard breakfast, just with a couple of extra options. It tends to get full on the weekends to make a reservation. Bottom line: Penbrook is a beautiful hotel restaurant that punches above its weight--excellent service, memorable dishes, and several items worth returning for.
