Büna is a wonderful perfect vibe. It's a quick service Ethiopian breakfast spot. When you walk in, you just feel the provisions they have been providing to the Petworth neighborhood for years. The drinks are delicious and the food is hearty, they don't skimp you out on portion sizes... as you can see with the brunch platter. They do other cafe classics as well like bagels and toasts. I always appreciate cafes that feel stuck in the 2000s. Büna definitely gives this vibe with their mismatched furniture and inspirational art. This place was a surprise. I ordered an iced chai latte with almond milk and an extra shot of espresso. It was the perfect mix of spice, tea and sweet without being overpowering. The service was quick and the space was inviting enough to want to sit and chat but not loud or overwhelming with noise. A big part of D.C. is the Ethiopian community and Buna Coffeehouse is one of several Ethiopian cafes in the city. This one is beloved by the neighborhood. Service is always on point and the space inviting. I enjoyed my iced latte. It's most strong and darker than I'm used to, but I really enjoyed it with a splash of simple syrup from the condiment bar. To eat, they sell bagels, sandwiches, and more. Popping in for breakfast, I ordered a chocolate chip muffin. It comes full of little chocolate chips, but it was very dry. I recommend asking it to be warmed up beforehand. read more

A Petworth gem that is not to be missed! Possibly my favorite of DC's many Ethiopian coffee shops and cafes. It's small inside but they've got a lot of outdoor seating. Solid coffee (I usually get iced coffee or a hot latte with oat milk) and even better food--American, Ethiopian, and fusion options for breakfast and lunch. I especially love the veggie roll-ups, such an ingenious way to transform the typical injera platter into an on-the-go takeout meal. The vegan options are stellar as well. Breakfast on my mind! I was super hungry and didn't want to cook so I searched online for a restaurant that makes Lox bagels. I came across this coffeehouse and saw that they had really good reviews and what I wanted. Ordered the Lox bagel on sesame and a caramel frappe. The bagel sandwich was delightful. Good amount of salmon, cucumbers tomatoes and onions. Just what your girl needed! The frappe was cool but there wasn't much of it considering the size that it came in. I'll have to give it another try. I placed my order through DoorDash and will say that everything traveled well. That's extremely important for me when I place orders via food delivery apps. I recently moved to the neighborhood and am less than 5 mins from this spot. My former coworker and I met up here a few weeks ago bc she also lives in Petworth just a bit further north. I had the breakfast bowl -- BIG portion; the tibs had great flavor and every bite was different - a little egg, a little guacamole, a little grain. I had to come back and try the avocado toast with turmeric goldenkraut and it didn't disappoint. If you don't like spicy things, the kraut has a bit of a kick I wasn't expecting! Got the chai both times - yum! I've drove pass this place many times pointing and saying "oh buna" (Amharic for coffee). I prefer Ethiopian coffee than other coffee beans. I finally stopped by and have not regretted it yet. I get the sugar cookie latte a couple times a week now that I can't stay away. I believe it is seasonal as it is no longer available on the online menu. I will be trying the pumpkin flavor next. Every time I visit, I am kindly greeted by the employees. They are so sweet. I brought a friend to enjoy latte and tibs just to relax. She enjoyed her coffee as well! read more

We walked 2 blocks up and ordered 1 mocha, 2 chai lattes and a hot chocolate for my kiddo. Greeted with a smile at the counter, perfect little coffee shop at the corner. Clean, warm and quick service. My mocha and my son's hot chocolate were delicious and my gfs said their chai lattes were yummy. Stopped by here on the Lark as I was on my way to run a couple of errands and saw some people out on the patio. I ordered a nitro cold brew and it was delicious they have a nice little set up at the end of the bar for you to be able to add simple syrup or a variety of sugars and cream. Since I was there for breakfast I opted for the avocado toast with turmeric goldenkraut and a hard boiled egg and it was delicious. The toast was nice and thick and I loved the addition of the crunchy acidity from the goldenkraut. It kept me full for awhile! They have a lot of really great breakfast and lunch options as well as a full list of pastries (I also got a blueberry scone that I ate later that day and it was great). I don't live in the area but I will definitely be back next time I'm nearby! read more

What a cute neighborhood cafe! They have a corner location that makes it even more adorable. Lots of window space. There's plenty of seating on plush cushioned chairs- adds a fancy feel to the place. There is also some bar stool seating by one of the windows. Free WiFi makes it super helpful to get some work done here while having breakfast, lunch or a snack. It's only open until 6, so I'm assuming most people aren't here dining for dinner- maybe getting something to go? They have an incredible selection of baked goods and sweet treats in their display case, like pound cake and beignets and chocolatey cups and donuts and so much more! However, it is all of the traditional variety so don't expect gluten free and/or vegan. The menu has a great assortment of coffee and lattes and those caffeinated beverages you expect from a coffeehouse. It all perks up the senses!! I like this place because it has gelato and sorbett and western sandwiches, but it also has veg Ethiopic menu items. Breakfast could be avocado toast or waffles and lunch could be a classic sandwich or vegan Ethiopian platter. I love that they have gluten free injera- it is so good, you won't mind it if you usually eat the other one. So good! The portion sizes are generous and prices fair. Good coffee house, would return for coffee - would not return for the food. Came in with a friend and we each got a sandwich for food, and a cold brew coffee. The coffee was perfectly good. We sat on the patio while waiting for our food. My friend popped inside to check if the food was ready and he was told they would bring our food out. Perhaps 20 min later we were wondering why the food hadn't come out yet. He goes in again to check the status and our food had been sitting on the counter getting cold and soggy for 15 minutes. 5 Star experience for this local coffee shop. Stopped by on a hot Sunday around 1:30pm for a late breakfast and coffee. We ordered a sausage, egg, & cheese bagel and a sausage, egg & cheese croissant with a Nitro and Nitro Latte with almond milk. After a visit to Swing's earlier this week I was excited to see that Buna serves Swings coffee. Everything was delicious and their hot sauce is a game changer- I loved the spices and it was a good addition to the breakfast sandwich. It's an interesting business that showcases the transformation this area is going through. It used to be a corner store, but has transitioned to a coffee shop that serves American and Ethiopian brunch, under the same ownership. This is apparently a good decision for them, as judged by the substantial line of hipsters going out the door on the Sunday I dropped in. They are good at food, but they have some work to do with service. I waited close to fifteen minutes in line and then almost half an hour for food, as one guy was trying to take orders and make drinks at the same time. Hopefully, if business is consistently this good they can hire more staff. I imagine it's better at non-peak times. Anyway, the food was a winning bowl of ful, stewed fava beans served with an impressive collection of peppers, onions, and tomatoes, yogurt, and some fresh-tasting french bread. I got two crusty ends, which I was happy about. The chai latte I had was quite large, and although I was running late to my next engagement, it was tasty enough for me to want to finish it. They offer other Ethiopian dishes either as a traditional platter or as flatbread rolls, which sure looked good. As befitting the cuisine, you can get vegan dishes, and they offer to make a gluten-free injera which I would be curious to try. I won't drop by in a hurry again, but I'd be happy to take the time to try them again. read more
