I wish I had the chance to take pictures of my meal but it arrived so quickly and prepared so well, I dove right in. This restaurant blends two unique cuisines into its menu and they work harmoniously. I ordered the Tokyo Sushi platter with the Ethio Veggie platter. Both stood on their own, but complimented me very well after long bike ride. Mita Cafe served the best prepared sushi I've had in a long time. Generously sized, fresh, and more flavorful than expected. The veggie platter had the perfect amount of kick and texture. Each dish had unique flavor profile and were clearly fresh prepared. I recommend trying the Ethiopian tea too! Mita Cafe is owned and operated by a lovely couple honoring their respective cultures through their passion for food. The reviews lead me to believe it would be quite fancy, but it was a small operation, a cafe with a few seats and a market next door. They offer both Ethiopian food and Sushi, a combination I hadn't seen before. I came in for breakfast and got some ful, which was freshly cooked with spices ported over from the market section. It came with grilled bread, fresh garnishes, and a large quantity of what I take to be ayib or some similar fresh cheese. It was an impressive dish. I got some sambusas to go, which were spicy and hearty. The practicality was a bit of a struggle; they offer a QR code menu but I struggled to get service and there wasn't wifi that I could see. I got kind of slow and distracted service; my to-go sambusas were just sitting there ready and waiting for me and I had to go to the counter. If you live anywhere in or near the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, then I strongly believe that you need to check this place out! The food is made with love, and you can tell just by the way it looks and tastes. The prices are reasonable and the food portions are generous as well. This is also the only place that I personally know about that combines Japanese Cuisine with Ethiopian Cuisine, which adds to its uniqueness in my opinion. As for food, I had the Japanese chicken curry with rice and Ethiopian espresso with peanut infusion. I met the owners, who are extremely friendly and hospitable. Mita Cafe feels like a home away from home I tried the Japanese curry w/ chicken, Gyūdon (Japanese style beef + rice bowl with pickled veggies (my fav part)), the watermelon juice and the Ethiopian tea. Everything was delicious, and even though I came a few minutes before closing the owners let me stay and eat (they were so sweet). I also learned that they met while they were both working at the Japanese Embassy in Ethiopia. There's also a cute store full of Ethiopian + Japanese goodies like Habesha cookies, Pocky, and ramen. Stopped here for a night coffee. I have heard great things about this cafe and the google reviews inclined me to go. I wasn't too hungry when I arrived but really wanted to try their peanut infused coffees. I opted for the chai. It was really good, I didn't really know what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed it. There aren't many places on the planet that sell sushi next to sambusa. Or injera next to gyudon. But Mita Cafe does a great job fusing Ethiopian and Japanese cultures in a little shop. I just ordered the Ethiopian Tea (iced, it's similar to a sweet tea with a hint of an herbal taste) and the matcha smoothie with banana. Holy sh*t Mita Ethio-Japanese is the best kept secret in DC. I just had the most insane sushi of my life: fresh nigiri, perfect rolls, and then bam--Ethiopian spices creeping in like they belong there. The Tokio Papa platter? Chef's kiss. While in the area, we decided to try them out, and ordered: +a Strawberry with Mango smoothie - prepared with mangoes, strawberries, and bananas, made with either your choice of apple or guava juice; we opted for the latter +an order of Spicy Lentil Samboosas - they also have spicy chicken as a filling, too; these are larger than the usual sized sambusas; super crispy, but I thought the filling was way too spicy! +a Tokyo Sushi set - this came with 4 pieces of salmon nigiri, a tuna nigiri, a red snapper nigiri, a roll of salmon maki, and a roll of tuna avocado maki; I really enjoyed the salmon nigiri, and most likely will opt for requesting these only; wasn't really a fan of the maki rolls, as one that contained 'baked salmon' tasked like it was from a tin I'd love to try their paninis next time and get more of their salmon nigiri. I'd also like to try their drinks. Service was very friendly and kind! There are only about 4 tables inside, so most seem to get their orders to go, or there's a queue to get one of the tables. What a charming cafe--a true DC hidden gem! Mita's eclectic menu, beautiful interior, and wonderful staff make this restaurant one to put on your list. I have yet to find sushi in DC that I really enjoyed--that is, until now! Classic California and Philadelphia rolls were elevated by high-quality ingredients and exquisite attention to detail. I could have scarfed down all twelve pieces by myself. Next time, I'm not sharing with a friend! DC is a haven for great Ethiopian food, and this vegetarian platter absolutely hit the mark. The lentils were exquisite. As always, if there's injera in my hand, I'm happy. The highlight of the meal was the Turkey melt on a perfectly flaky croissant. I recently traveled to France and can confirm that no croissant lived up to this sandwich. The perfectly melty and slightly crispy cheese, combined with a great and slightly spicy sauce, made this sandwich an absolute winner. To cap off this wonderful experience, the owner Misrak was absolutely lovely and so welcoming. But last night, out with my sister and her partner, we decided to give it a try- and we were blown away! The food and hot drinks earn a solid 10/10. We started with the chicken and lentil samosas, Japanese beef rice with soup and salad, and a few sushi rolls. Everything was perfectly seasoned, with just the right balance of spice and flavor. The sushi was incredibly fresh- literally melt-in-your-mouth good! Towards the end of our meal, we tried the Ethio-peanut infused chai, Ethiopian hot tea and a mango-guava smoothie. These hot drinks are a must - like a cozy, warm hug in a cup, perfect for the upcoming winter. Creamy, flavorful, and super comforting. I got the ethio veggie platter and an americano and everything was amazing--especially the lentils. The hospitality was on point, everyone working here was lovely, very helpful and willing to chat. I was a big fan of the bread that came with my meal, and one of the ladies working here helped me buy some to take home. The interior is pleasantly quiet and well decorated, and the cafe is located in a very nice neighborhood. My only complaint is that it isn't closer to where I live... Such a cute cafe! My friend & I were going on a hike in rock creek that day so we wanted to get something small nearby. Mita cafe was the perfect place for that. A random lunch time find! I came here searching for a quick bite. I ordered the tuna melt. Even though I typically do not like uncooked spinach I could barely taste it alongside the tuna and tomato. The croissant was also buttery and flaky. This sandwich also came with chips in a sandwich bag. Overall the lunch was filling. The owners kindly gave us complimentary samples of their sushi. I typically do not eat raw fish but the cooked salmon one was good and my partner enjoyed the other avocado piece. The lentil samboosa was a spicy as described and nice and flaky. I think sushi is definitely the way to go here. I stopped in for a coffee and at the last minute decided to try the chicken panini but almost immediately after I paid had order regret after seeing the delicious sushi photos on Yelp. The chicken panini was good and filling but it wasn't anything special. I also got it to go and they didn't ask if I preferred chips or salad and automatically put chips in which I didn't realize until after I'd left. I would definitely be up front when you order if you don't want chips! I also got an iced vanilla latte but after paying was informed that they didn't have vanilla syrup. They only had almond, hazelnut, and caramel, so I just opted for some sugar instead. They didn't offer to refund the extra charge for flavoring but I didn't mind. As I was waiting for my food, they brought out sushi samples to a table that was dining in. It looked very good but I did feel some type of way about not receiving one as well, especially after the whole flavoring issue. All in all, I think I would come back for sushi and basic coffee but not sure if I would make a specific trip out there for anything else. read more

After a couple hours of record shopping across, the best bet to regroup was over a cup of buna or chai. On this stretch of Kennedy that meant the new Mita Cafe. The signage outside still reflects a previous era but inside a different story is told. I didn't want much, just a chai and one of the muffins right by the register but with an arm full of records a conversation began about Jazz, Mulatu Astatke to be exact. I found this conversation to be a fruitful continuation of my record shopping and great introduction to a three week old business, one with nice plants and a pleasant surprise in the form of sushi. Yep, sushi at an Ethiopian coffeeshop. "So, here's the deal," the owners brother-in-law is a Japanese sushi chef. Now, I'm overly skeptical of any and everything. But lo and behold, in a matter of minutes the sushi chef in question came bearing his work.
