Generously sized, fresh, and more flavorful than expected. The veggie platter had the perfect amount of kick and texture. Each dish had unique flavor profile and were clearly fresh prepared. They offer both Ethiopian food and Sushi, a combination I hadn't seen before. I came in for breakfast and got some ful, which was freshly cooked with spices ported over from the market section. It came with grilled bread, fresh garnishes, and a large quantity of what I take to be ayib or some similar fresh cheese. It was an impressive dish. I got some sambusas to go, which were spicy and hearty. The practicality was a bit of a struggle; they offer a QR code menu but I struggled to get service and there wasn't wifi that I could see. I got kind of slow and distracted service; my to-go sambusas were just sitting there ready and waiting for me and I had to go to the counter. The food is made with love, and you can tell just by the way it looks and tastes. The prices are reasonable and the food portions are generous as well. This is also the only place that I personally know about that combines Japanese Cuisine with Ethiopian Cuisine, which adds to its uniqueness in my opinion. Mita Cafe feels like a home away from home I tried the Japanese curry w/ chicken, Gyūdon (Japanese style beef + rice bowl with pickled veggies (my fav part)), the watermelon juice and the Ethiopian tea. Everything was delicious, and even though I came a few minutes before closing the owners let me stay and eat (they were so sweet). I also learned that they met while they were both working at the Japanese Embassy in Ethiopia. There's also a cute store full of Ethiopian + Japanese goodies like Habesha cookies, Pocky, and ramen. Stopped here for a night coffee. I have heard great things about this cafe and the google reviews inclined me to go. I wasn't too hungry when I arrived but really wanted to try their peanut infused coffees. I opted for the chai. It was really good, I didn't really know what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed it. There aren't many places on the planet that sell sushi next to sambusa. Or injera next to gyudon. But Mita Cafe does a great job fusing Ethiopian and Japanese cultures in a little shop. I just ordered the Ethiopian Tea (iced, it's similar to a sweet tea with a hint of an herbal taste) and the matcha smoothie with banana. While in the area, we decided to try them out, and ordered: +a Strawberry with Mango smoothie - prepared with mangoes, strawberries, and bananas, made with either your choice of apple or guava juice; we opted for the latter +an order of Spicy Lentil Samboosas - they also have spicy chicken as a filling, too; these are larger than the usual sized sambusas; super crispy, but I thought the filling was way too spicy! +a Tokyo Sushi set - this came with 4 pieces of salmon nigiri, a tuna nigiri, a red snapper nigiri, a roll of salmon maki, and a roll of tuna avocado maki; I really enjoyed the salmon nigiri, and most likely will opt for requesting these only; wasn't really a fan of the maki rolls, as one that contained 'baked salmon' tasked like it was from a tin I'd love to try their paninis next time and get more of their salmon nigiri. What a charming cafe--a true DC hidden gem! Mita's eclectic menu, beautiful interior, and wonderful staff make this restaurant one to put on your list. I have yet to find sushi in DC that I really enjoyed--that is, until now! Classic California and Philadelphia rolls were elevated by high-quality ingredients and exquisite attention to detail. I could have scarfed down all twelve pieces by myself. Next time, I'm not sharing with a friend! DC is a haven for great Ethiopian food, and this vegetarian platter absolutely hit the mark. The lentils were exquisite. As always, if there's injera in my hand, I'm happy. The highlight of the meal was the Turkey melt on a perfectly flaky croissant. I recently traveled to France and can confirm that no croissant lived up to this sandwich. The perfectly melty and slightly crispy cheese, combined with a great and slightly spicy sauce, made this sandwich an absolute winner. I got the ethio veggie platter and an americano and everything was amazing--especially the lentils. The hospitality was on point, everyone working here was lovely, very helpful and willing to chat. I was a big fan of the bread that came with my meal, and one of the ladies working here helped me buy some to take home. A random lunch time find! I came here searching for a quick bite. I ordered the tuna melt. Even though I typically do not like uncooked spinach I could barely taste it alongside the tuna and tomato. The croissant was also buttery and flaky. This sandwich also came with chips in a sandwich bag. Overall the lunch was filling. The owners kindly gave us complimentary samples of their sushi. I typically do not eat raw fish but the cooked salmon one was good and my partner enjoyed the other avocado piece. The lentil samboosa was a spicy as described and nice and flaky. I walk by two other coffee shops closer to my house to come here. I think sushi is definitely the way to go here. I stopped in for a coffee and at the last minute decided to try the chicken panini but almost immediately after I paid had order regret after seeing the delicious sushi photos on Yelp. The chicken panini was good and filling but it wasn't anything special. I also got it to go and they didn't ask if I preferred chips or salad and automatically put chips in which I didn't realize until after I'd left. I would definitely be up front when you order if you don't want chips! I also got an iced vanilla latte but after paying was informed that they didn't have vanilla syrup. They only had almond, hazelnut, and caramel, so I just opted for some sugar instead. They didn't offer to refund the extra charge for flavoring but I didn't mind. As I was waiting for my food, they brought out sushi samples to a table that was dining in. It looked very good but I did feel some type of way about not receiving one as well, especially after the whole flavoring issue. After a couple hours of record shopping across, the best bet to regroup was over a cup of buna or chai. On this stretch of Kennedy that meant the new Mita Cafe. The signage outside still reflects a previous era but inside a different story is told. I found this conversation to be a fruitful continuation of my record shopping and great introduction to a three week old business, one with nice plants and a pleasant surprise in the form of sushi. Yep, sushi at an Ethiopian coffeeshop. "So, here's the deal," the owners brother-in-law is a Japanese sushi chef. Now, I'm overly skeptical of any and everything. But lo and behold, in a matter of minutes the sushi chef in question came bearing his work. Mita is a riot. It's run by a husband and wife duo and they are Ethiopian and Japanese. The restaurant isn't a fusion restaurant they serve both sushi and Ethiopian food. It feels like a deli / small convenience store but also they have incredible sushi. Strange mix but it works because the food is so good. Their menu is confusing because they only serve these large platters. So you can't order like a specific roll. You just order a platter and you get an assortment of classic sushi options. The quality of the fish seems ti be some of the best in DC. Now that I understand the menu I go back regularly but only if I'm ordering for 2 or more people because the platters are large. read more
