For Sunday lunch, 2 friends and I decided to get Mandalay, since I don't often get the opportunity for Burmese cuisine. Just before noon, my party was the first to arrive and received seating immediately. A few minutes after, regulars started filing in, complete with custom greetings by the owner asking about travel plans friends, etc. I ordered the SF02 Catfish ChoVhin Gyaw ($21.99), a seafood entree consisting of catfish fried and sauteed with green peppers, onion, and tomato in a light brown sauce. This came with a bowl of rice and arrived w/in 10 minutes. The sauce ended up on the sweeter side of savory-sweet-fragrant in the way that pasta sauce might seem sweeter that just pureed tomatoes and paste. The catfish had nary a hint of fishiness and held a firm, though not hard, texture.

An absolute diamond! Went there on Father's Day and everyone there was super warm, patient, and gave great recommendations. Food was incredible (breading on the fried squash was incredibly thin and crispy), with a huge varied menu that accommodates all diets, featuring produce I don't get to see often, like bittermelon. Keep supporting this place, especially while the purple line is getting built!

So happy Mandalay did not permanently shut down. Wonderful Burmese food. The green tea leaf salad is a must, and large enough for two people. My husband always gets the tofu and tomato hin (V2) with a medium spice level (which is quite hot, so be warned). I tried the nanjee gyaw (N5) noodle dish with pork, which was huge (had to take half home). Loved the thick sauce and soft noodles. The interior has changed quite a bit; the booths are gone and there are fewer tables, more spaced out. Only half the restaurant is used for seating, but it filled up pretty quickly after noon on a Sunday. Only open for dine-in for lunch, no longer dinner. That's OK. I'll take Mandalay however we can; just happy they're still around.

Mandalay is a favorite in Silver Spring with the unique flavors of Burmese food. Because of the construction on Bonifant St. the restaurant only offers dine in Tuesday -Thursday and carry out the other days. It's totally worth a weeknight dining out. The place is casual and has a Mom & Pop feel, and the food is delicious!!! The chicken with mango curry taste like South Asian mango achar or pickles. Spicy, tangy, and scrumptious. The chicken with sour mustard greens has a tangy kick (I did order spicy) and is unlike any others dish I have tasted. Highly recommend both dishes. My only disappointment was the green papaya salad which tasted more like cabbage than green papaya, maybe it was an off night ?

    Belly was tender and flavorful.

Must try Pork Belly Hin : Outstanding dish in Mandalay restaurant. 10 out of 10 $24.99 = worthwhile every dollar. Giant pork belly pieces simmer in onions curry sauce. So delicious : Tender belly : ratio fat & meat perfect. Curry flavor tasted savory &nicely. This is the Heaven of Belly lover. Service is fine - inside restaurants is quite simple. Only location is a cons. Environment seem frustrated. (downtown Silver Spring, MD) There is construction around the area for a long time, also limit parking. Please be prepared about it if you want to dining.

Food, service, and ambience was top notch. Will be returning as soon as possible. I was recommended by the sweet young lady the no 1 noodle and omg to die for. The chicken with potatoes is amazing. I can't wait to try more options!!

My family's favorite source of great food in all of Silver Spring - and great for vegetarians and vegans as well.

Ask the Community - Mandalay Restaurant & Cafe

Do they cater for small parties?

We've gotten large orders for 10-15 people and catering for a wedding of 75 ppl. The owner, Joe, is amenable and easy to work with! Call them or stop by!

What are the catering options, if any?

Is the tea leaf salad vegan?

You have a choice of vegan (no fish sauce) and non-vegan (with fish sauce).

We dropped in early on a Sunday to check the place out. We make a point of trying every Burmese restaurant in the MD/VA/PA area, so when this popped up on Google, we had to go. Since it was early, the full menu wasn't available, but we were able to order the Mon Hin Khar (Mohinga (fish soup)) and Gyin Thoke (ginger salad). Portions were generous, broth for the Mohinga tasted clean and traditional, a good amount of fish included. It was on par with the other restaurants we have tried. (Mohinga is one of the traditional dishes of Burma, and as such, people often have their own flavor/variation that they prefer, so we judge it based on what other places in the area might serve). The ginger salad was fresh and delicious. The ingredients were packaged separately in the container. (If you've never had ginger salad before, this might be a bit confusing. Recommend mixing all the ingredients together and letting it sit for a few minutes before eating so the flavors from the oil, ginger, and lime have a chance to meld). All and all, this was a good experience, we met the owner (who is also the chef) and because we had to wait a bit, he gave us some freebies, which he didn't have to do at all (we were fine with the wait). Next time we want to try the other salad and some of the fried rice dishes. Now that we are more familiar with the restaurant and location, we would probably also order ahead online to bypass any waiting. Hope this place will be able to expand in terms of hours and some more traditional Burmese dishes soon.

Overall: small spot inside of Lotte, okay food, high prices for the quality…read more The hours on Yelp for this did not match our experience. We tried to go at 9 and 10 on weekends but they were closed. This weekend we got there at 11 on Sunday and they seemed to be just opening. I've been stoked to try this place because I love Burmese food, but it didn't hit for us. Our donuts were soggy. They tasted underdone. The green curry was watery, but spicy. It was a big portion, but almost no chicken. I was most excited for the tea leaf salad, but I think there must have been something that got lost in translation because what we got was most definitely not a tea leaf salad. I was so sad when I opened the take out in the car. It was also slow. We ordered, grocery shopped, and when we came back it still wasn't ready yet.

Summary: had high hopes based on the other recommendations and reviews, but actual experience…read moredisappointingly didn't live up to my expectations. If there was a 3.5 star option, I feel like that would be the most accurate representation here. The place itself is located on the wall of the Lotte in Catonsville and it looks like a small family-run establishment. Service was kind, but admittedly a bit of a language barrier which may have affected some of the ordering process. In total, we ordered the tea leaf salad, a curry dish, seafood noodles, and the asian doughnuts. While I was hoping for fresh, vibrant dishes, my expectations fell a bit short where some of the proteins felt a bit tough and other ingredients felt a bit soggy. The flavor profile was good (one of those places where spicy means spicy), but it did lean a bit on the seafoody/fishy side. I still think it warrants checking out because it's not often that there's Burmese cuisine available.
