This has a wonderful view with the window seating area. The food was good and the location was ideal, Meiwah has been in the DC area for quite a long time. The window seating was really enjoyable for a afternoon lunch, the food arrived fairly fast. I enjoyed the pork soup dumplings and the Hunan whole fish. The parking lot is adjacent to the building and the elevator was also a plus for my mother. This is located in a quiet neighborhood of Friendship Heights close to the bethesda Metro. The restaurant is quite large and can accommodate large gatherings and tables. I hope they expand the menu to include more traditional plates as well as hard to find delicacies which would make this location stand out more. read more

One of my favorite neighborhood spots. While the restaurant can definitely host more formal or romantic gatherings, it's easy enough to grab a quick meal here or order something for takeout. The service is always quick. While the staff can sometimes come across as short, they really are very friendly, especially when one smiles at them and is polite. My absolute favorite dish is the Fried Jumbo Shrimp with Spiced Salt (pictured). I also really enjoy their pork dumplings (available either steamed or pan fried), the Chinese roast pork, and several of their soups. My partner, who is VERY picky in his eating, really enjoys their General Tso's Chicken. It's hard to find a place where we can both enjoy Asian food (i.e., my palette is much broader than my partner's), but Meiwah meets the brief. read more

Meiwah did an amazing job hosting our wedding reception, many thanks to the countless staff members who worked so hard on event day as well as the days leading up to it. Special thanks to Sally L, who was in charge and our point of contact. She updated us throughout the planning and was transparent about restaurant policies. Almost a year prior we were shopping for restaurants in the DMV area that offer Chinese-style banquets. We stopped by for lunch and were impressed by staff professionalism, good food (plus presentation) and beautiful decor. We expressed interest and were shown the private party room and prelim prices. Sally followed up with us via phone with additional info. Several weeks later we decided to book with Meiwah (the wedding date was still available). In the months following, they worked with us regarding menu (crafting a veganized version for certain tables), decor, parking, cocktail hour, and alcohol orders, ect. When things changed they adapted and accommodated. The restaurant also went through a renovation during that time and finished well before the wedding. The patio and dining room looked very modern, elegant and well lit. On reception day we were welcomed to a festive private party, where the usual white linens were swapped out for red and gold tablecloths/napkins. They added red roses for each table centerpiece, table assignments, and arranged our party favors perfectly. They threw in extras (sesame balls, cut up fruit, chocolates, almond cookies). More importantly each course in the banquet meal was excellent. The guests complimented and praised the food (Peking duck, lobster Cantonese, seafood soup, flounder, ect). Staff service was seamless (each course came out perfectly timed, plates and utensils were cleared in a timely manner, ect). Sally was present to tend to guest needs as well as help staff. Looking back over my reviews, I discovered I never wrote a review about one of my absolute favorite restaurants; shame on me. It came to me as I was ordering take-out yesterday. I've had the pleasure of dining in with family and friends. But most of my orders have been to go only because of scheduling. For the sake of this review, it was again to go. This time, I ordered General Tso's Chicken with Fried rice and a bowl of Wonton Soup. It was just what the doctor ordered (okay for me). Their portions are ALWAYS plentiful and well packaged, and the presentation of the food is excellent, but more so than anything else, it's so tasty and favorable. The staff is always courteous and friendly. I chuckle when I call to place an order, and they take my number. I must be flagged in their system because they always make me feel so welcomed: " Hello ____, what can I get for you today?" I appreciate the love. Discovered this place during the pandemic and been a customer since. My fav is beef & broccoli. It has a sauce that's nicely savory, which is what I'm looking for. I can vouch for the wonton soup; it's one of the better ones that I've had in the DMV. The seafood soup is interesting, with shrimp, scallop and crab. I've only done take-out. It's a bit of an effort to get to the take-out area, located on the second floor in the back of the building, up a flight of bleak stairs. On my first visit, I thought I was in the wrong spot. Visited on Jan 2, 2026. The food was very cold. Specifically the duck. They used to bring the duck out to the table and slice it. Now is it's served pre-sliced on a platter. Also, the wait time for fresh duck was at least 30 minutes. The duck came out in 10 minutes and it was not appealing or warm at all. The woman that came out to address the issue was not nice at all. They tried to take the platter and reheat it. We declined and requested a refund. She took the platter and did not apologize nor did she return to the table. I sensed she was annoyed with us for not being satisfied. My question is how fresh is the food they are serving? Everything seems pre -cooked. I miss the location near DuPont Circle. Ordered takeout from here because I had a bottle of wine at home I wanted to drink. I grew up in DC and was a customer of the owner's previous restaurant, City Lights of China. Ordered the General Tso's chicken, pork fried rice, spare ribs, shrimp/pork dumplings and whole fried fish. The whole fried fish and spare ribs were great. We weren't expecting a snapper as the fish so it was a nice surprise. Everything was super fresh and tasty and up to par with New York Chinese food. Amazing Chinese spot in Chevy Chase! All the dishes are served family size and has an old school Chinese restaurant vibes. The staff was also very friendly and attentive. Really enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. The first time I went there we ordered the jumbo shrimp with salt and pepper, the shredded crispy beef, veggie Lomein and eggplant in garlic sauce. Every single dish was delicious and kept me wanting more! My brother and I couldn't finish all that food so we ended up taking it to go and having it for dinner the next day. So this place is ok imo, look the food is absolutely excellent every time you get it, however the service quite frankly stinks, especially if you're ordering take out. This is a lovely place to have dinner...it was not crowded at all on the Friday night we were there. My Mapo tofu dish and bok choy with mushrooms were delicious! The tofu was diced very beautifully and the bok choy was a bit over cooked but still tasty. My dinner companions enjoyed their dishes of chicken with mushrooms and chicken with black bean sauce. Parking isn't too bad, especially for the area. We parked in the garage (it cost us $6 for the evening) directly beneath the restaurant and there was no problem finding a spot--the garage was well lighted and the elevator takes you directly to the restaurant on the second floor. Take the elevator or stairs up to this lovely little Chinese food restaurant and enjoy the ambience, and the options for food and drink. We were there to reconnect as friends happening to be in the same town after decades apart - wanting a place to chat leisurely and also share a meal. The staff was helpful, patient, and polite - giving us ample time to decide on selections, and explaining subtle differences between plates. We also never felt rushed in finishing the meal and opening the table. The food was generally excellent and plentiful. We had shrimp fried rice and a couple of tofu options and spring rolls. The tofu and spring rolls were not the best I have ever tried, but they were tasty and we had no challenging consuming the shared meal. I have been going to Meiwah for years, and they never disappoint! The food is always freshly prepared and flavorful. The ambiance and service are always good. And the Long Island Iced Tea is a legend on our household! It looks like they recently expanded their menu with new options, which is exciting as it gives me a reason to come back sooner and try something new, though I am a creature of habit and almost always order the same thing. Do yourself a favor and try the Flounder Duet - it is DELICIOUS and the presentation is flawless! It always gets the attention of anyone who can see it because it is a showstopper. The sweet and sour shrimp was classic and tasted good as well. If you're looking for a warm atmosphere with good food, look no further than Meiwah. It's unfortunate to write this review, I wish I could keep saying that this is one of my favorite restaurants in the area, but after finding - and almost eating - a whole roach in the orange chicken order, I'm afraid I will not be ordering from here anymore. The food usually tastes amazing, but last night we ordered takeout and when I was about to take the third bite out of the orange chicken, I saw something weird - it turns out it was a roach, whole, stuck to the sauce and the chicken. Needless to say I almost threw up everything I had eaten so far, and had to dispose the rest. My husband called to report it, and all they did was to refund the chicken. This restaurant stole my money. Absolutely terrible customer service and (mostly) mediocre food. I ordered dinner from their website and went to the restaurant to pick it up when I was told it would be ready. Over an hour after my dinner was supposed to be ready, I was still waiting. There were 15 people crammed into their tiny pick up area also waiting for their food. I finally had enough and cancelled my order. I asked them issue a refund. They told me they would but it had to go through their website. I waited a few days - no refund. I called them. They assured me they would take care of it. I waited a few more days - no refund. I opened a dispute with my credit card. They told my credit card that the food was provided even though it wasn't so I'm being charged for food I didn't get and being called a liar. The portions and prices were good given the location and ambience, and they kept the bland but pleasant- jasmine tea flowing. My friend got the Kung Lao tofu. Tasty, with an American friendly spice level. I was expecting slightly more from the food taste -wise or some dim-sum or some other wow factor, based on the reputation, write-ups in the papers, location, and longevity of the business. This is a great place to go if you have a less adventurous palate, and want some high quality, American-friendly, or familiar Chinese - American food. The egg roll was soggy, the mushu chicken had very little chicken and was so mushy and what I loved about theirs was how fresh and crisp the veggies were so this was very disappointing. Traveling on a business trip, this is a very good looking Chinese restaurant in Chevy Chase MD, I was starving and also craving some good Chinese food, so glad I had come to this place, the service was super quick and the food quantity is very decent for the price you pay. I have tried the Egg drop soup and a combination fried rice, I like my food spicy and asked them to make it spicy. They not only made it perfectly spicy but gave me a cup of red chill sauce, both items were delicious. The tables are nicely spaced and the restaurant sits on a corner with surrounding views of the street, it has a dedicated elevator to get to the restaurant which is on the top floor. I am giving only 4 starts, because of the snobby nature of the serving staff. And also the wontons that came with the soup didn't have a sauce with it. 7/23/22 Meiwah Restaurant is a restaurant I was first introduced to in Washington DC. There was a location near a dance club, but both of these places have been turned into something else. Nevertheless, the one item on the menu is something I tried first, and I am happy I chose it. The Jumbo Shrimp with Butter is a delicious option and one I have been eating for years when I got the chance to eat at this restaurant in Chevy Chase Maryland. Today my family celebrated my birthday a week after my birthday. It's the thought that counts. We discovered the back entrance for picking up one's orders is no longer an entrance to the restaurant itself. Covid-19 has changed the restaurant's policy about Entering From The Rear. In fact, the employees will prefer it if back on out slowly and head around to the front of the restaurant where the elevator and stairs are. The entrance is next to a Chipotle or whatever they are calling themselves now. Meiwah still looked good, but most of the faces I did not remember. There is one server I do remember, but have forgotten her name. Yet she keeps her hair cut short and has for over a decade. This woman who I will call D'vorah for names sake seemed to remember me, but did not seem like the cheerful woman I knew 8 or 9 years ago. People change, but she was still polite. The restaurant wasn't busy when we arrived at 4pm. There was mixed couple with a son eating there. Something I loved to see. Black man Asian wife:)...getting off topic. I was thinking about the Peking Duck...oops....it is called The Beijing Duck on the menu. I wanted to get this, but my heart and tastebuds want The Jumbo Shrimp With Butter. The Jumbo Shrimp With Butter can come in its shell or without the shell. I noticed on the menu, this option of in shell has been removed from the menu. Tje out of shell option is how them seem to operate now, but if you like or live your shrimp in its shell, let your server know this is how you want it. I specifically asked D'vorah politely to make the Jumbo Shrimp With Butter without the shell. I want to make sure; as well, as not have food be wasted by sending it back. I have had this chef's special with the shell and it was less than satisfied with the results. ...Yeah, it's not for everyone. I did end up trying The Beijing Duck, because my dad ordered it. The Beijing Duck costs $43.00 from what I remember seeing, but the skin and meat is good. Not as good as The Jumbo Shrimp With Butter, but good. Tje oinions with the Jumbo Shrimp With Butter increase the flavor of the chef's Special. I recommend ordering extra if you dare. The Men's bathroom is clean from what I saw, but not the women's bathroom from what my wife told me. My wife informed me the seating were cracked and dirty. I did not noticed this, but I thought I would had this into the review. My dad loved coming back here and i plan to return here again. By the time we left the restaurant, business was picking up. We even saw an Elderly couple who did in fact Enter The Restaurant From The Rear. They had no intention of climbing back down the steps and walking around to the front of the store.
