Passion Fin is a family favorite! We find the food to be good and authentic and the staff are really nice. We first tried the restaurant when my son requested udon for a special lunch with mom and I had errands to run nearby (it's located in the Sumner Place shopping center off Sangamore Road, with ample parking). We both enjoyed the food and friendly service and he requested to go back for his birthday dinner, where he was gifted with complimentary ice cream for the occasion -- so it's now one of his favorite restaurants. The interior is spacious and elegant, with dark wood and stone accents. It keeps the restaurant generally pretty quiet so you can have conversations at a normal volume even when it's busier. The portions are very generous and we often have leftovers to take home.

    Tables

ALL tables without customers were not cleaned. Never seen a restaurant that untidy. Cleaned table was still sticky when we were seated.

Food is consistently good as is the service. Been there many times over the years, always a "must have" when in Bethesda. Recommend it! Kind of pricy but is good. Appetizers do the job.

A last minute lunch spot after walking on the trail. This Asian bistro is situated inside The Shops at Sumner Place. I wasn't aware that the west part of Bethesda was considered 'historic'. There's a couple different menus to choose from offering Curry, Hibachi, Sushi dishes, Daily & Lunch Specials, in addition to a full bar & Happy Hour. Our Server Ed, was OK as the service could have been better. I ordered the Seaweed Salad &Teriyaki Salmon, which came with two pieces of fish that surprisingly wasn't inundated in sauce & had plenty leftover to take home. My Companion had the Yellow Curry with Chicken & Shrimp which he seemed to enjoy, expressly the spiciness of the curry. Good food, rations & doable prices rounded out a cool lunch outing. *The following is from my return visit in speaking with the Manager: Our Server packaged both my Seaweed Salad & Teriyaki Salmon in the aluminum take out containers. Instead of a plastic bag, he placed it in a brown paper bag without handles. I opted to put the bag in my leather tote to leave in the car while I ran into Safeway. Once I got home, took the bag out, the bottom of the bag was saturated & frayed from the Seaweed Salad's clear dome lid not being affixed securely...my leather tote was not in good shape. I called to speak with the Manager & was told that Lee, would be in at 5pm. I returned, met with Lee, showed her what had transpired. Apart from trying to give me a tutorial on the different take out bags they use & such, she was very understanding of my disposition. I declined her offer to dry clean my leather tote as that was not an option...thank goodness for Bethesda Luggage & Shoe Repair. However, Lee's other accommodations was beneficial to us both. I appreciate the professional courtesy she extended to me & will return to give Passion Fin another try.

Stopped by with some fellow Yelpers for Happy Hour before a CMYE nearby. Liked the crab wonton and house Pinot Grigiot, shumai were nice, avoid the "Super Yellowtail" roll as the seasoning completely overwhelms the fish. Other rolls were routine. The bartender was new, and had to be prompted to apply the HH prices to our drinks and snacks. She also didn't bother to ask if we wanted separate checks. Passable, not quite bad enough for a Meh, but I would not make the effort to find it again. Not surprised the joint was empty when we hit the road at 6:15.

I tried this place only cause I work less than a mile away and I'm running out of food options. I ordered carry out since I was on my lunch break. I had the crunchy spicy salmon salmon roll and avocado roll during lunch time and no one informed me there was a lunch special so I paid more for these rolls and didn't get a choice of soup or salad. It's frustrating when there's a lack of customer service. No one greeted me, gave me a menu, or informed me of their specials. If it wasn't for a coworker of mines that asked if I got the special after I returned to the office, I would not have known. So I did a little research on their website and saw that they do have two rolls special with miso soup or salad for $8.95 or hibachi lunch specials starting at $7.95. Good to know, I might give their hibachi a try. Now for the food- their was nothing crunchy or spicy about my salmon roll. It was just ok. Nothing special. Avocado roll was ok too. Plain and dry. I will probably give them a try again one day to try their hibachi. Hopefully it's a little more tasty then their sushi.

    Fried rice with a cockroach

The fried rice actually tasted great.....but then I found a cockroach in it. I usually order the sushi here, but now I'm scared to because clearly they have cockroaches in their kitchen.

    Roti Canai bathed in grease

Ordered kind of blindly without seeing the bad reviews which is quite obvious. This place is awful. Chicken satay was dried up, and charred. Roti was damp with grease. Terrible. And expensive to boot.

HH review: Passion Fin is located in a residential district further to the West/Southwest of the more popular areas of Friendship Heights. For those who hate looking for parking in that area, this is a decent option where you are likely to find seats during Happy Hour and where you can get modest quality dishes at reasonable prices. For my HH visit, I tried a large bottle of the house sake (Gekkeikan) that is warmed up in a water/alcohol heating apparatus at the bar. At $5 a bottle, it's a fairly reasonably priced Sake and what I'd expect from HH. For my food, I sampled a spicy tuna maki and a spicy hamachi maki which cost $4.5 each ($6.5 non happy hour prices). Again, there was nothing magical about what I tried. It was decent, solid HH maki. Several of the special makis were more expensive (~$10, $11 HH pricing). And didn't seem like much of a deal so I decided not to sample those. For those close to the southern-most part of Sangamore Road, this is probably going to be the best happy hour spot unless you drive ~15 minutes. Recommended if you are close by.

The layout is interesting -- there's an upstairs when you walk in, but the sushi bar and a good bit of seating are downstairs. The menu is pretty straightforward with a mix of hand rolls, appetizers, specialty rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and traditional rolls. They also have a few solid combo deals, though I usually prefer trying a variety of items instead. Service was quick, which is always appreciated at a sushi spot. We ordered a few specialty rolls, two traditional rolls, and a couple orders of sashimi, all served together on one platter. The rolls were a great size -- filling without being overly large. The sashimi was fresh, and the traditional rolls really balanced out the meal nicely. The flounder and tuna sashimi were both excellent, and the California roll made with real crab was simple, fresh, and really satisfying. The total came out somewhere in the $70 range, so after tip and splitting it between two people, it was about $40 each to try multiple rolls and sashimi. Definitely fair pricing for the quality and amount of food. This spot had been on my list for a while, so I'm glad I finally made it over. I'd recommend checking out the menu beforehand so you can go in with a game plan and try the items that stand out most to you.

Raku is an Asian fusion restaurant and have some verity of Asians menus that's nice things about here. Their popular coconuts curry noodles soup is from Thai or Vietnamese coconuts curry, and not as spicy as authentic Thai or Vietnamese ones so It's easy to eat. You can choose from 3 type of noodles and different soup - curry or simple broth. It's probably better choice here than their sushi for my preference. If we just want Sushi in near Bethesda area, Sushiko in Chavy Chase is good. When we crave for Authentic sushi we just go to authentic Japanese restaurants ( some Michelin stars "Sushi Taro" in DC ) that is truly authentic quality. I also go to other one for sushi ( "Love Sushi Makoto" in DC ) I know that's not even comparable category as those restaurants offers authentic real foods by Japanese owner and chef, and ingredients are real from Japan. I know It's not fair to compare to Asian fusion restaurant like Raku or typical local sushi places that other Asian or American own the place. Raku is very reasonably priced as it should be for actual ingredients. Price stays reasonable that makes this place a popular spot too. I have to be honest their miso soup tastes no real authentic favor to me. But Raku is definitely better choice of quality foods overall compare to other Asian restaurants in Bethesda. Sushi chefs and waitresses are asian and none of them are Japanese and that is ok as most of Sushi chefs and Sushi restaurants in USA the workers are not Japanese anyways. It is actually hard to find Sushi restaurants that owned by Japanese with real Japanese chefs and waitresses and staff in USA. They sometimes says welcome "irasshai" in some Japanese greeting ( that's only used in restaurant setting ) with their wrong accent that is cute to me:) Bethesda is a cute little town and Bethesda row is just like a corner cute village with surrounded by basic restaurants and cafes, normal shops, nothing luxury really, but safer and quiet, clean little town. Neighbors enjoy to go out to restaurants including this Raku as easy to access from near suburbs housing area, so my friends does and walking distance from their houses. This restaurant set small tables very close to next seat and there's very small bar that space is limited, that's as why it's always filled up and crowded. It's uncomfortable and no privacy, I wish they make space between next seats. Except winter, they offer outside seats and dog friendly that's a bonus for dog lovers.

It was an odd experience because most waiters are attentive enough to know when a table is ready for dessert or they simply ask. As I expected, by the time we received the fried ice cream, the plate looked sloppy and the ice cream on the inside was melted. It clearly was the same plate. Finally, while I was packing my dinner she seemed to recall she never brought me chili paste I had asked for during dinner. No apology or anything.
