Passion Fin is a family favorite! We find the food to be good and authentic and the staff are really nice. We first tried the restaurant when my son requested udon for a special lunch with mom and I had errands to run nearby (it's located in the Sumner Place shopping center off Sangamore Road, with ample parking). We both enjoyed the food and friendly service and he requested to go back for his birthday dinner, where he was gifted with complimentary ice cream for the occasion -- so it's now one of his favorite restaurants. The interior is spacious and elegant, with dark wood and stone accents. It keeps the restaurant generally pretty quiet so you can have conversations at a normal volume even when it's busier. I've only been here for lunch, but they have a decent lunch special menu which offers a few roll and nigiri options at what seem to be reasonable prices. I like the sushi deluxe dish. A last minute lunch spot after walking on the trail. This Asian bistro is situated inside The Shops at Sumner Place. I wasn't aware that the west part of Bethesda was considered 'historic'. There's a couple different menus to choose from offering Curry, Hibachi, Sushi dishes, Daily & Lunch Specials, in addition to a full bar & Happy Hour. Our Server Ed, was OK as the service could have been better. I ordered the Seaweed Salad &Teriyaki Salmon, which came with two pieces of fish that surprisingly wasn't inundated in sauce & had plenty leftover to take home. My Companion had the Yellow Curry with Chicken & Shrimp which he seemed to enjoy, expressly the spiciness of the curry. Good food, rations & doable prices rounded out a cool lunch outing. *The following is from my return visit in speaking with the Manager: Our Server packaged both my Seaweed Salad & Teriyaki Salmon in the aluminum take out containers. Instead of a plastic bag, he placed it in a brown paper bag without handles. I opted to put the bag in my leather tote to leave in the car while I ran into Safeway. Once I got home, took the bag out, the bottom of the bag was saturated & frayed from the Seaweed Salad's clear dome lid not being affixed securely...my leather tote was not in good shape. I called to speak with the Manager & was told that Lee, would be in at 5pm. I returned, met with Lee, showed her what had transpired. Apart from trying to give me a tutorial on the different take out bags they use & such, she was very understanding of my disposition. I declined her offer to dry clean my leather tote as that was not an option...thank goodness for Bethesda Luggage & Shoe Repair. However, Lee's other accommodations was beneficial to us both. Stopped by with some fellow Yelpers for Happy Hour before a CMYE nearby. Liked the crab wonton and house Pinot Grigiot, shumai were nice, avoid the "Super Yellowtail" roll as the seasoning completely overwhelms the fish. Other rolls were routine. The bartender was new, and had to be prompted to apply the HH prices to our drinks and snacks. She also didn't bother to ask if we wanted separate checks. I tried this place only cause I work less than a mile away and I'm running out of food options. I ordered carry out since I was on my lunch break. I had the crunchy spicy salmon salmon roll and avocado roll during lunch time and no one informed me there was a lunch special so I paid more for these rolls and didn't get a choice of soup or salad. It's frustrating when there's a lack of customer service. No one greeted me, gave me a menu, or informed me of their specials. If it wasn't for a coworker of mines that asked if I got the special after I returned to the office, I would not have known. So I did a little research on their website and saw that they do have two rolls special with miso soup or salad for $8.95 or hibachi lunch specials starting at $7.95. Good to know, I might give their hibachi a try. Now for the food- their was nothing crunchy or spicy about my salmon roll. It was just ok. Nothing special. Avocado roll was ok too. Plain and dry. HH review: Passion Fin is located in a residential district further to the West/Southwest of the more popular areas of Friendship Heights. For those who hate looking for parking in that area, this is a decent option where you are likely to find seats during Happy Hour and where you can get modest quality dishes at reasonable prices. For my HH visit, I tried a large bottle of the house sake (Gekkeikan) that is warmed up in a water/alcohol heating apparatus at the bar. At $5 a bottle, it's a fairly reasonably priced Sake and what I'd expect from HH. For my food, I sampled a spicy tuna maki and a spicy hamachi maki which cost $4.5 each ($6.5 non happy hour prices). Again, there was nothing magical about what I tried. It was decent, solid HH maki. Several of the special makis were more expensive (~$10, $11 HH pricing). And didn't seem like much of a deal so I decided not to sample those. For those close to the southern-most part of Sangamore Road, this is probably going to be the best happy hour spot unless you drive ~15 minutes. Recommended if you are close by. read more

Some Yelpers and I came here for their Happy Hour before an event, and when we walked in, we were directed towards the bar area. The HH menu includes house wines (whites and reds), hot sake (small or large), well cocktails, and domestic beers; a selection of appetizers were 50% off, some sushi rolls were $2 off, and some special rolls were $3 off. I had a strawberry daquiri, which was easy on the alcohol; it was more like a strawberry smoothie that was actually quite delicious! :D For some munchies, I tried their Crab Wonton (the wonton was definitely crunchy with a nice little mixture of cream cheese and imitation crab within; came with a side of a watered down sweet & sour sauce that was forgettable) and a Honey Boston Roll (which came with a generous amount of lettuce, asparagus, and steamed shrimp, but I wasn't sure where the 'honey' or the 'Boston' part came in?). I'd also sampled the shumai and some of the Yellowtails rolls. Sake also came heated, and extra sake cups were provided with no problem. Service was very friendly and pleasant, but the employee stated that it was her first time tending the bar; the HH hours weren't reflected on the check, so we had to kindly remind her as well. Limited seating at the bar, it was a comfortable atmosphere. Rounding down since the lackluster impression leaves me favoring any of the dozen more mom & pop sushi restaurants a short drive away. Plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot, decor on the nicer side. Alaska and super yellowtail rolls were reasonably fresh. It takes a decent happy hour to make an okay quality of sushi at conservative sizes worth its value, and counter the effect of grumpy service. I got an apology when she forgot my sake, but the bartender was a little terse when the overcharge on one of my items was pointed out. It's nice that at their price point they can offer more luxury menu options like taco su, duck salad, or the Ocean / Festival / Angel rolls, but I'm not excited enough to give them a steep chance next time beyond chirashi and a Honey Boston roll. read more

I've noticed Groupons and Living Social deals for Asian Fusion restaurants lately. This doesn't necessarily surprise me as Asian Fusion is a bit of a wildcard. My recommendation is *if* you are a foodie with a passion for a particular region of Asian food like Cantonese, Szechuan or other, a regionally focused Asian Restaurant is a better choice. Now, if you are in a group or have a unspecific Asian *hankering,* go for the Asian Fusion. What I have not determined is *if* the fusion is in the bringing together of multiple dishes or *if* it is meant to be multiple flavors and influences in one dish?! I had California Rolls, Vegetable Tempura, Chinese Brown Sauce Broccoli, Salad and Brown Rice. All were prepared to the proper temperature and had fresh ingredients. The Tempura was on the heavier side of Tempura (or greasier). The Chinese Brown Sauce Broccoli was *odd* in that the chicken tasted more like fish! It was definitely "SYSCO" or distributor grade chicken. Passion Fin is good for children, good for those on a budget and good for those wanting something from the sushi bar. So, I live in the neighborhood so my wife and I are excited that there is a new sushi restaurant in our community. Up until now we've religiously been going to Kotobuki. The sushi at Passion Fin is good. They don't have much in the way of exotic fish or cuts, like the various types of toro that you get at Matuba, but they cover all the basics. I found that the best items on the menu are the the fancy, elaborate rolls that have a bunch of ingredients. Now for the bad part. I decided to take a chance and try the pad thai. I'm a fan of the dish and used to think that it was like pizza. Even the worst pizza is still pretty good. This is not the case here. The pad thai I got was a bland pile of noodles with a handful of tasteless shrimp scatered on top of the dish as though someone forgot them and added them at the last minute. It was so bad, that I started thinking maybe the chef had some kind of disdain for anyone ordering pad thai in a Japanese restaurant, b/c s/he clearly didn't want me to order it again. I've been back to this place four times now trying different items on their menu. If you are not picky about your nigiri then this place should be fine. Otherwise stick with places like Kotobuki or Matuba. The maki selection is where this place really shines. And their Thai food is an absolute abomination. They should consider sending their chef to intern at Amina Thai, or even Tara Thai to learn how to prepare standard issue Thai dishes. read more

I have had two lunches to-go from here so this review is only about the food. Thai Basil Chicken: Great price, very skimpy portion. As someone who has been to Thailand many times, this dish was extremely underwhelming. The quality of the chicken was the same as the cheapest Chinese takeouts, the spice was non existent and the sauce had almost no flavor and was watery instead of coating the rest of the ingredients. 3 Roll Sushi Special: Again, excellent price but this time it was good value as well. The flavor of the sushi was very boring though. The one roll with honey was not a pleasant flavor combination and the spicy tuna had no kick at all. It seems like everyone likes their fancy rolls covered in spicy mayo which is pretty hard to mess up. I would recommend Yirasai over in Westbard for sushi over this place any day. They're nice enough and the food is alright. I would give a higher rating, but they had weird fine print on the menu. For example, they don't put cucumber in their California Rolls. It wasn't something that I expected, because it's the most common sushi in the American marketplaces. I've been here several times being that I work in the same shopping center. The lunch specials prices are a good deal. I've gotten the salmon teriyaki, I was not impressed. The salmon was thin, dry and some what crispy. The mango shimp is very yummy but I wish it came with more shrimp. The hibachi lunches are a hit or miss. The chicken and shrimp with fried rice was okay, i liked the fried rice but there was a soupy sauce left over from the chicken and shrimp (pictured). The shrimp and steak with fried rice was good but the fried rice was made too salty (pictured). I've also gotten a dragon roll and a shrimp tempura roll. My shrimp tempura roll had lettuce in it. I have been to Passion Fin a few times. Each outing was very good. They have lots of good choices but I can speak best about the sushi. First, everything is fresh, and they get all the simple things right. The rice is done correctly (it's amazing how poorly some sushi rice is done) and basic sushi--tuna, eel, yellow tail etc are all good. The fish always seems fresh. Next, their basic rolls are tasty and not haphazard. I'm not a sushi snob but there is a big leap between cheaper sushi buffet and rolls made to order at a place like Passion Fin. Their signature, fancy rolls are great. Very interesting with sauces and flavors I can't really tell you what to order but I'll say you should pick fish you like in basic sushi and try new things. I've dined/ carried out many times from this restaurant. I love their sushi. Their special rolls are all so delicious. My personal favorite is the "Spicy Crunch Salmon Roll". SOOO yummy! I've never had bad sushi at this place. However, if you're looking for Thai noodles, go to a Thai restaurant. Their drunken noodles were not very flavorful and not even a hint of spicy.
