So dear daughter wanted to check this Japanese restaurant out with the family. She wanted the boat as well as the crispy sushi rice. The crispy rice was so good she wanted a second order! The fatty salmon nigiri tastes divine. We also had their ramen and pork katsu. Everything was served promptly and fresh. My major contention with this experience is that our waiter, Zoe was inattentive and unprofessional. Our dessert arrived 5 minutes after receiving our dinner. I asked her if they could make our dessert fresh and her response was, how long will it take you to eat? To which I responded I don't know. It was an odd experience because most waiters are attentive enough to know when a table is ready for dessert or they simply ask. As I expected, by the time we received the fried ice cream, the plate looked sloppy and the ice cream on the inside was melted. It clearly was the same plate. Finally, while I was packing my dinner she seemed to recall she never brought me chili paste I had asked for during dinner. No apology or anything. When I arrived at Kusshi, the hostess had her back turned and didn't acknowledge me for a good five minutes. Eventually, a waiter did come over to seat me, but that's not even the issue. After placing my order, I waited quite a while for my waiter to return. I wanted to order a drink, so I tried to catch the attention of a staff member passing by. Instead of offering assistance, he gave me a dismissive hand gesture and walked away. After a moment, he reconsidered and went to fetch my waiter. I was told later that he was one of the sushi chefs but that does not excuse his behavior. Frustrated, I ended up paying for my drink and leaving before my food even arrived. The sushi tasted good, I wasn't the biggest fan of the Baltimore roll--too much Old Bay-- but the lava roll was DELICIOUS. I had the worst experience here because of the flies near the window. I will never come back to this location again. I was in downtown Silver Spring to see a movie, and took the opportunity to che K out the Kusshi Sushi around the corner to the Regal Majestic theater. I go to the Kusshi location at Pike and Rose in North Bethesda frecuently, but I had not tried this other site of the Kusshi empire. Kusshi Sushi Silver Spring is tucked away in a recessed store front, so you have to look for it carefully, otherwise you may miss it. There are some tables outside to dine Al fresco, but the main seating in inside. You have to go to the main register to "check in" and then seat at a table for service. I found this a little bit odd since the decor gives more of a take-out/casual fast service vibe; it is sparse and practical, with many two seater tables, but every seat has already a set up (glass, chopstick and napkin). Kusshi serves popular Japanese dishes, like sushi, sashimi, rolls, katsu (chicken, pork cutlets),various noodle dishes, etc. I decided to splurge and ordered the "deluxe" sushi/sashimi combination, which included more expensive fish like toro tuna, fatty salmon, Japanese mackerel. I also added an order of uni (sea urchin roe) because I just love it. The order came in a traditional, old-fashion giant sushi boat, which was fun. There was a great variety of both sushi and sashimi(fish only), including ebi(raw shrimp), fatty tuna belly (toro), and various salmon. There was a higher sashimi ratio, which it typically makes a sushi serving more expensive. I got the sea urchin order (2 pieces) at the end and they were small but super fresh and delicious. The freshness of the fish was a characteristic of all the fish included! The rice was soft and not overly seasoned with vinegar, which is a trick used by restaurants when they are serving not-so-fresh fish. I also ordered a Sapporo Black Japanese beer, which was served in a frosty tall glass, and it was much appreciated! The service was incredibly attentive and friendly, which was algo greatly appreciated. The only negative issue that I noted was that their air conditioning was making a horrible noise and there was a drip from the ceiling being catch by a bucket at the very entrance, which I hope is a transitory situation in an otherwise perfectitly acceptable restaurant offering fresh fish at a good value. Big bowl of hearty miso soup. Gyoza, shumai, and Spring rolls were good, but not exciting. The California roll was totally minimal, about the diameter of a quarter and made with [barf] surimi. The pork bun had an intriguing interplay of tastes and textures. And last but not least [drum roll] the sashimi. Two generous cuts each of salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. Good, but didn't evoke salt spray and gull calls as the best fish can. Service was cordial, but the pace was a bit off. I wound up with soup, appetizer, and main all on the table at the same time. Since this location had opened we had returned several times to great food and service. Our most recent visit yielded a new menu with new items. One was their Japanese Katsu curry. I ordered that with tofu as the protein source. My companion ordered the Nationals roll, which also looked like a new food choice. We also ordered agedashi tofu and seared fatty salmon nigiri to share. Everything came out great. The seared fatty salmon was slightly sweet with subtle caramelization on the surface and soft on the inside. The agedashi tofu was crispy silken tofu immersed in dashi, always good.
