    Spicy Tonkotsu

On my search for the best ramen in the DMV, this place consistently tops people's list. They are a small restaurant with very limited hours and seating. After waiting over an hour we got seated and started with their Karaage which was great - crispy, juicy and paired great with the yuzu mayo. For ramen we got the Triple Threat (a combination of all three broths) and the Spicy Tonkotsu. Right off the bat you can tell the ingredients they use are super fresh and high quality. The noodles were al dente, pork was flavorful and smoky and the egg had the perfect runny/jammy center. The broths were just ok the and were not my favorite. I was personally not huge on the smoky dashi broth as I felt it overpowered everything. I think this is a pretty good bowl of ramen but if you factor in the inconvenience/wait to try and eat here, I would say it's a bit overhyped and only worth coming once. I've lived just around the corner from Menya Hozaki for three years and today was the first time I went. Why? They're closed weekends and their dinner hours are limited. Their space is small and they don't take reservations so if you want to go, you also have to stand in line which, frankly I haven't done since I lived in New York City and was in my early 20s :) Three friends and I were chatting last minute about doing dinner in the neighborhood and as luck would have it, we were all free tonight and able to line up around 440 - we were behind maybe 10-15 people so by 5/5:05 we were seated which was nice. Me and one friend ordered the classic tonkotsu ramen. The broth was phenomenal. The rest of it was so-so. I was surprised there were zero other toppings beyond a soft boiled egg and one bamboo shoot. The pork was fatty and I like lean meat (I recognize that is typically the style for ramen and I am the exception in not enjoying it so don't hold that against them but do want other folks who see this review to know before ordering). The service was good. Be aware there is a time limit. All in all, a good spot to have in our neighborhood and glad to see they consistently have a long line but probably not a place I'll frequent more than the occasional day or night where my schedule serendipitously aligns.

This is probably the most hyped ramen place I've heard in DC. Upon arriving, I was told there would be a 80 minute wait on a Wednesday evening. It's a little disappointing to hear as I arrived close to when they opened, but nonetheless, went around to support the local businesses around. 80 minutes later, I came back and got seated. It's a small space with limited indoor seating (tables can probably fit max 6 people) and there's plenty of 2-tables. I personally ordered myself classic konkatsu and some chicken karaage. They both tasted really good - one of the best in DC! They serve the food really fast here too, so don't be disappointed by the long list of parties. Overall, I would come back here and recommend this place with friends :)

We arrived at this restaurant right on 5pm only to find the wait would be 2.5-3 hours. Sadly we did not get seated until 8:30 PM. You might get lucky with no wait, but be prepared just in case. The menu is very limited (pretty much just chicken karrage and ramen), so please consider when dining. We started with the chicken karaage (4/5), which came out burn-your-mouth hot and very fresh. Some pieces were very large, too big to eat in one bite, which was my only critique. The yuzu dipping mayo was excellent however. What we tried: Classic Tonkotsu (5/5): Outstanding. Not heavy at all, perfectly firm noodles, amazing chashu, and a perfectly cooked egg. My only desire was for more bamboo shoots. Classic Shoyu (5/5): A very clean, flavorful broth with the same tasty firm noodles and perfect chashu and seaweed. Spicy Vegetarian (Veg Tantan-4/5): Mildly rich with just the right level of spice. The toppings were excellent, but the thicker noodles weren't my favorite. If the almond-milk ramen broth used a different noodle, I think I would've enjoyed it more. Overall, I definitely preferred the tonkotsu and shoyu over the vegetarian option, mainly due to the noodles and overall flavor. Aside from the ridiculous 3-hour wait, the service was friendly and prompt once seated. Everyone was very nice and considerate. Seating is extremely intimate, especially at the counter. We were placed right next to a hand-washing station, which maybe was a bit awkward. Would I return? Only if I'm in a ramen mood and happen to be in the neighborhood. Otherwise, I'm waiting until a new menu item pops up.

I've tasted a lot of Ramen, but nones ever had me writing like this! The whole experience to get in here is worth it. No reservations makes it tough because the wait times are typically ridiculous! But if you're able to get in the food is cooked to perfection (literally) The smell of the ramen and chicken is delightful and delectable. The space is small, but effective. It reminds me of ramen in Japan. How it's simple and yet delicious. I waited an hour to get in but when I did, I grabbed the veggie tan tan ramen (made with a almond milk broth) and for someone who isn't a fan of milk based broths, I've changed my mind. The service was quick and helpful giving options. Overall, it's a few spots I go to for Ramen in DC and I've added this one to my updated list. After you try, I'm sure you will too!

Tokusei Tuesday I came here with a group of friends after this spot went viral, so we decided to make it a little side quest across town. That one's on me for not reading more reviews beforehand--I didn't realize how limited the menu would be. The wait honestly wasn't bad since the weather was nice. We knew it would be about an hour, so we popped into the corner spot nearby for appetizers and laughs before coming back. Inside, the space is thoughtfully laid out and clearly designed to serve a small, focused crowd efficiently. The standout for me was the music. Tracks like "By My Side" by John Kirby and "City Dreams" by Javier Santiago set a mellow, lo-fi, almost zen vibe that really elevated the experience. There was only one dish being served. It was perfectly cooked and very clean-tasting, but ultimately bland--and, on second look, not the dish that originally went viral. While I genuinely admire the business model, the efficiency, and the intentionality behind it, the food itself didn't move me. I'm glad I tried it, but it's not a place I'd return to.

The ramen was amazing super rich broth, fresh noodles, and the staff was really nice and welcoming too. The ambiance was really cozy...definitely worth the wait.

Been high on my list of places to try. Finally got around to going. I heard the wait could be long so I went solo for my first time. I got in line at 4:45. The line moved right at 5pm when the restaurant opened. I was seated at 5:08pm. There were a lot of 2-4 person parties ahead of me so glad I was able to squeeze in. It was quite busy the day I went. You order and pay using the QR code at your table. I waited a bit for my food but not too long. I got the appetizer and tan tan ramen. Both were great! I would skip the karaage. It wasn't bad but once was good enough. Ramen was awesome and the noodles were super fresh and veggies a nice addition. Can't wait to go back

Such a popular place and you will immediately see why once you take your first sip of their incredible broth and ramen. The place itself is not huge, I went in on a Friday night and was able to get a seat at the bar. While I do wish that they had some more appetizer options, it also made it easier for me to know what exactly to get. I highly recommend the chicken karaage to start, it was nice and crisp and didn't have too many overpowering flavors. Left room for their yuzu mayo on the side. It's a big portion so definitely shareable. For the ramen bowl, I got the spicy tonkatsu. It's really hard to find a good bowl of ramen that has everything you want - tender meat, spicy broth, flavorful broth, and good toppings. This bowl had it all. I opted for extra noodles and then had too much for myself, but it was so worth it. This is one of the best bowls of ramen I've had and I've had a lot of ramen. The staff is super friendly, super attentive and the perk here is that you can order everything from a QR code. This is super easy for solo diners, couples or friend groups who want to order as you go. The service is fast, but also very intentional. They space out your meal just right. Because it's a busy spot, don't plan to stay here too long, as they do have a seating limit. This is very reminiscent of Japan. I loved my ramen and can't wait to go back and try some other kinds, might be tough since I liked this one so much!

The char siu was good, and broth was rich and creamy. Noodles were a little too overdone for my taste. Service was good, no complaints. It's good but I am not sure I would wait that long again! Definitely worth at least one visit for the experience to try though.

Came here on a Tuesday afternoon. My review is only of their Tuesday lunch, which was comprised of red snapper broth. When we first got here, there was already a line and we had to wait 1.5 hours. We decided to wait since we made a special trip out here just for their ramen, after hearing rave reviews. The ramen was good, but I wouldn't say it was the best I've had. Maybe it would have been different if we came for their dinner menu. I also thought the portions were a little small for the price we paid. Service was good, but due to the small space they can't accommodate a lot of people, hence the wait. I suggest coming for dinner and coming early if you want to try this place out. Make sure you check their hours.

Menya Hosaki is a ramen shop by Eric Yoo, and this first-come, first-serve type of an eatery gets packed pretty quickly! We came in on a dreary day, and decided to sit up at the bar, which was a great way to see the preparation of the ramen. We ordered: +Karaage - served with yuzu mayo; the yuzu mayo was a great dipping sauce, but I found the super large chicken 'bites' way too big, and I like them more well-done; however; the flavor and the yuzu mayo is yummy +Spicy Tonkatsu ramen - with housemade chili spice in a pork paitan soup; the char siu was the highlight, as it was caramelized perfectly and had amazing flavor; the hubs really enjoyed the creamy broth as well +and, a Sunset Shoyu ramen - with housemade chili spice in a clear chicken- and dashi-based soup; this was soothing, and I recommend in asking for extra chili oil Don't sleep on the menma; we usually aren't fans of this, as it's usually ghetto versions at other ramen places; here, they import straight from Japan, and it's probably one of the best and only menma we'll eat! Orders do take a while, as each order is literally made-to-order, depending on how busy the place is. Service was pretty friendly and kind. Ordering is super easy, as there's a QR code that is attached to your 'party' - they put a temporary hold on your card until you close your tab, which is super convenient. Limited street parking can be found in the area. +delicious, soothing broths +friendly service +easy ordering and payment process +limited street parking in the area

Best ramen in DC. Hands down. We were put on the waitlist on a Friday night at 730pm and were texted that our table was ready by 820pm. Amazing ramen and awesome service. We will absolutely be back.

I really enjoyed my experience at Toki Underground!…read more Toke Underground a small bar and restaurant in the H st corridor which seems to be most well known for its ramen offerings. We got there nice and early on a Friday to enjoy the happy hour which is available from 4-6 on weekdays. As a part of happy hour they had several cocktails and small bites for $10 or less. I had the pumpkin spice spritz and an order of the fried chicken bites - both were really really good. I'd order both items again. For awareness, they limit dining in to about an hour and a half - because the restaurant is fairly small, they want folks to make their seats available for other guests pretty quickly. They weren't rude about enforcing this time limit, but they definitely tell you up front and quickly gather your orders/plates to help move you though the meal quickly. This is a nice date spot - it's coziness would make for the perfect ambiance in you're looking to grab a bite with that special someone. Pro tip: Be careful not to walk past it! The signage outside isn't the best, so it's very easy to miss the door completely (as I did).
