Maki! Maki! Maki! This was a great ramen spot! Definitely worth checking out. The interior is very small and cozy, so they take your name and phone number upon entry and then call you once a table is ready. Not to worry, the turn around time is surprisingly quick. The concept for the ramen, is you choose your meat, and then your base/soup. We were a party of four tonight and some of our favorites were: Rock Shrimp Spicy Shrimp Tempura Roll California Roll Spicy Pork Belly Bao Bun Spicy Pork Belly (Volcano) Ramen Chicken Katsu (Tonkotsu) Ramen Chicken Katsu (Tori Shoyu) Ramen Mixed Veggies (Spicy Miso) Ramen Everyone truly enjoyed their meal, and although they are know for their ramen, the stars of the show were the starters.

I know Maki is tirrrrrreeeeed of seeing my face, but the ramen is so good I cannot stay away! Maki is a casual ramen spot that I have visited several times, and it has become one of my go-to places anytime I'm in MD. The restaurant is on the smaller side, which gives it a comfortable feel, but it also means it can fill up quickly. Lunch times are pretty light and I am able to be seated quickly; however, during my evening visits I have waited in line. If you are planning to come during a busy time, I recommend making a reservation. The only other con I have for Maki is its parking. Parking can be a challenge here. There are only a few spaces right in front of the restaurant, and they are pretty tight and usually taken, so you may need to park by the other nearby shops and walk over. That's where the cons stop though. Maki otherwise is a gem with great ramen that keeps me coming back. I always order the chicken katsu spicy miso ramen, and it is consistently delicious with flavorful broth and perfectly cooked chicken. I love the contrast of the breaded chicken with the broth and I have yet to find this perfect combo elsewhere. I'm a creature of habit so unfortunately I haven't tried much in their menu, but in addition to a wide menu of ramen and noodles, they also have a fresh sushi bar that looks great, although I have not tried the sushi yet. On top of the great food, the staff is always friendly and attentive, which makes every visit so nice. The overall vibe of the restaurant is super relaxed, and it is a great place for a quick lunch or a casual dinner with a friend. If you are in the Rockville area and craving a comforting bowl of ramen with great service, Maki is definitely worth a visit. I know I will keep going back.

This is one of the places that kept me reliably and tastily fed throughout the pandemic, thank goodness! I'd only been in myself one time to get something to go until recently when I finally had my first sit-down meal there -- very nice! Friendly, efficient service was followed by a meal worthy of the International Ninja Day I went there to celebrate, ha ha! My #1 fave thing here is my go-to tofu katsu curry. I love fusion dishes and this is a perfect example. I first had Japanese curry in Japan and this lives up to that! Of course I also enjoy the fresh salad with ginger dressing, absolutely delicious matcha ice cream, and other assorted goodies ....

Went here for the first time ever. I honestly have never heard of the place until my friend wanted to try it. I've been in this little strip before for other things but never noticed Maki. I will say parking is a little tight but that's just the little strip it's located on so just be careful parking and pulling in and out. We got there and there were people sitting in every seat. Very quickly and waitress handed us a menu. To my surprise, she said it'd be a five minute wait for 6 of us and she was pretty accurate. They knew which tables were leaving and able to accurately predict. We were seated after around 5-10 minutes. The harder part was the ordering. The ordering system is online so we had to take a phone a pass it around. I personally did not like this system. Me and my friends are pretty young and tech savvy but the system kept adding extra than what we originally put. We ended up with 3 extra rolls that we didn't want. Of course we paid for it but it was honestly too much food for us. I recommend triple checking your order and being weary of that. We actually caught it the first time when it inputed 6 of one roll but missed the others. Just be careful of that. The food itself was actually great. My favorite was the spicy shrimp tempura roll but my friends also loved the yellowtail. The food was delicious and filled us up. I would say I got the shrimp tempura as an appetizer and it was a little bready but the tempura sauce helped with that. It was consistently busy while we were there but service was good. The one thing I didn't like is that they brought the food out as they made it. Typically we wait until everyone has their food but it was a little hard being served that way. The ambience was great nevertheless. It was busy but not loud or crowded.

Stopped by for a quick meal, and surprised the wait was short and it wasn't as crowded, as they usually are. Parking out front is convenient, as there are many parking spaces in this strip mall. We had sushi both rolls and sashimi, and they were both delicious. The rock shrimp and octopus appetizer was equally as good. The ramen with the soy base was a bit too salty for me, and had to add some water, this was the only dish that was not quite on point. Overall the service was excellent and I can let the ramen slide, as the food arrived quickly and I enjoyed the meal mostly. Maki has some competition now with many newer ramen restaurants, they are definitely on top with many choices and flavors, they may need to add some more specials or seasonal dishes to mix things up a bit to stay on top.

Stopped here on our way home from picking up family from the airport. The food was good. Despite the restaurant's name Maki there is more than sushi. They have ramen and teriyaki dishes. We ordered both ramen and chicken teriyaki. We liked them both. The only bad thing is the parking for this place is tight my elderly mom and aunt nearly hit by someone parking so keep that in mind if you have children or elderly people with you.

This is my go to ramen spot. It's the best hole in the wall I've found. The service is homey and the food is top tier. I've brought friends here who have also enjoyed their selections and let me tell you...I always end every meal with dango (just talking about it makes me want to drive back over there).

Shrimp tempura roll, California roll, crunchy spicy salmon roll

Came here on a Wednesday afternoon - pretty cozy atmosphere, place seems clean, a bit small so maybe not for dinner but lunch is good. Service is mostly help yourself there was only one waitress but I didn't mind. Got the sushi bar 3 rolls for $18!!! Pretty good pricing there even if it's not the GREATEST quality it is definitely very good. They get the basics right - California roll, shrimp tempura roll, and spicy salmon roll were delish. 4.5/5

I didn't like the baby octopus. Nice flavor but way too chewy. But the shrimp tempura was gear with a nice dipping sauce. Also our ramen gad a nicely balanced broth with tender pork slice, corn and other vegetables. Clearly a very nice meal other than the octopus. Prices were reasonable. Sushi looks tempting, but we just had it yesterday, so another time. Great service, but no frills to this place. Busy at dinner so come early.

We were in Rockville on Christmas Eve 2024 when my Mom shared that our cousin was in town a few months ago when they "discovered" Maki! Wow! They don't take reservations and we had six in our party which included myself, my Mom, 2 sisters, my brother-in-law and neice. All sushi lovers and several experienced the best in Japan. We several orders of Gyoza pan seared pork & chicken dumplings & gyoza sauce. Also we got the Chicken Karaage japanese style fried chicken & tonkatsu sauce as well as Shrimp Tempura golden tempura battered jumbo shrimp & vegetables & tempura sauce. We order several plates including: Sashimi regular which 12 pieces selected sashimi (tuna, salmon & miso soup, koshihikari sushi rice; Salmon Special 5 pieces salmon sashimi, 1 salmon & avocado roll, 1 crunchy spicy salmon hand roll, miso soup & edamame. I ordered Sake nigiri and it was fresh, beautiful and delicious! We finished our Christmas Eve dinner with dango sweet dumpling skewers made from "mochiko" rice flour. Yum! As a native Washingtonian growing up in the 70s in Rockville, Maryland we rarely had sushi with our immediate family of nine. Tonight with my soon to be 94 years young Mom she picked an exceptional place to celebrate the holiday. A truly amazing experience of excellence in Japanese cusine, prompt & courteous service, and very welcome atmosphere. Bravo Maki Rockville, You ROCK!

Visited Maki for lunch earlier today with friends. It's been awhile but I really do like the options in their menu. They have several sushi rolls, ramen and seafood appetizers to choose from. Grilled octopus was pretty good. Service was nice and attentive but they were a bit pushy. It felt like they kept trying to rush my table out which I didn't appreciate. It's a small restaurant but very casual. Family friendly as there's many kids.

If you want good ramen come here!! I've been to multiple ramen spots and this one is delicious! I got their bulgogi steak ramen with a tonkatsu base Me and my friends also shared some other bites such as the Cali rolls which were fresh and light, their gyoza , spier rolls, fried shrimp in sauce, and fried octopus The service was great, the ambiance was great. Will definitely be back here soon. 10/10

The five stars is strictly for the ramen. I enjoyed the flavorful broth, the toppings, and the spicy beef bulgogi. For the broth, I opted for the tori shoyu ramen which was a nice balance for the spicy meat. Originally, I was going to get the volcano but the server said it was going to be spicy, but I would try that next time. In addition to the ramen, I tried the spicy salmon roll + chicken kaarage. I could've done without both of these items - 3.5/5. The chicken didn't have the same crispy crust as I am accustomed to and the sushi was just ok. This is a walk in family friendly space. I came around 4pm on a Friday where most table were full but they seem to flip them pretty quickly. It is not a large seating area so prepared for a wait if you come at peak times. The food came out pretty quickly which was great bc this was my first meal of the day. Mali is def my new go to spot for ramen!

    Any gluten free options?

Ramen can be ordered with gluten-free noodles, and there are several gluten-free protein options for the ramen as well (e.g. pork belly or bulgogi steak). Maki also serves sushi and nigiri, which are typically gluten-free.

    Is their broth gluten free?

I admit, I pulled into the first plaza I saw that was easy to get in to find something, and wound up at Akira. I've had their ramen before at other locations, but this was my first time at this one. The place had a little bit of a crowd in it, but I was quickly seated. The Rockville location here is perhaps not the most beautifully decorated, with some rather odd ornamentation (like an actual, possibly functional, payphone? ), but it's still a nicer spot than a typical lunch counter. Okay, confession. I have no idea what the different ramens are. I always just kind of pick one randomly, and I've never met a ramen I didn't like. This time, I got the tantanmem. Of course, picking randomly, I picked one that used ivory soap as a topping -- or as you fancy people call it, "cilantro." Realising my error, I quickly caught the waitress and asked for it to be omitted. Akira actually skipped it! YAY! Thank you. I cannot tell you the number of times that request gets met with a "no problem" only for my dish to be overflowing with soap bubbles later. The broth had a little bit of a spice to it, not much, which was delightful. Everything was well cooked, and it really hit my hangry spot. My only small complaint was that my egg was still cold -- but, also, the bowl was set in front of me, and I simply hit the "ON" button and vacuumed it in.

I have been there three times. My wife's family is in St. Louis. The chef moved to Washington, D.C. from there. His establishment in the Midwest was not bad. But his new venture in the capitol is excellent. I would gladly go anytime the opportunity presented itself. The only issue is reservations at the tiny place. (They have a time limit for tables.) They offer standard fare for a izakaya. They also have sashimi and sushi (that is not always available on a pub menu), and it is among the best you'd find in the city. The dish that has been written about in the NY Times is the ara yaki. That is prepared from leftovers, scraps that otherwise might be tossed as trash: heads, jaws, fins, bones, etc., broiled with a bit of salt. The explanation is insufficient. For this by itself, the restaurant is worth visiting. It will make you want to try to prepare the same quality from leavings. I'd bet it is like much else: simple in concept, easy to execute poorly or at a level that would be deemed middling, and frustrating or maddening to try to perfect. That also is true with the only imperfection, which was the tamago. Brought at the end, which is a custom (it can be the first course or the last course), the omelet was more rustic. It would not have passed muster with Jiro of the acclaimed documentary. The issue was the shape; it was crude. But by any standard short of perfectionism, the meal was great.

I'd probably pass on it next time. 1/5 Overall, disappointed with the steak and pork belly and wouldn't spend your money on them, while chicken was good, dunno if you'd go out of the way to order it if that makes sense. Gyoza: meh, not much there with flavor or taste, not memorable at all, just mid. 2.5/5 SUSHI: Hamachi and scallion Temaki, this is served open like a "taco style" I found this to be enjoyable! The yellowtail was marinated with a subtile flavor that added to the flavor! 3.5/5 Med fatty tuna, chutoro, nigiri was great with flavor and tenderness but my only problem was that there was too mush membrane in the cut where it's hard to chew and where you need to spit it out. Just wish that wasn't there tbh, 3.5/5 The salmon and tuna flight were all great! If I were to nitpick, the rice seasoning was a bit too much, taking away from the flavor of the salmon and tuna. But overall it was enjoyable, 3.8/5 Overall, the food was good, but it is very expensive for what you get, nothing stood out to be amazing that would set this place over the many sushi places in the area. Service is good and ambiance is very pleasant just not sure if it's completely worth it Might go back but with the many options there it's hard to decide.
