I caught up with a friend here, and it was my first time at this location. It's not as big as Rockville, from what I can remember. We sat at a table near the order counter, but we had someone who came to our table for service. I got some sake at the tail-end of happy hour, but then I decided to browse their regular menu. As I always say, if takoyaki is on the menu, I'm going to grab it! I really could eat it everyday... I know, it's fried, so I shouldn't. I haven't had bad takoyaki yet, so theirs was delicious, and so was the veggie sampler. got, which was an array of vegetarian sushi rolls like avocado and kanypo. I was quite full once I finished. We were in Silver Spring in early evening and had a craving for tempura so decided to give Kusshi a try since they seem to have a pretty extensive menu beside sushi offerings. The restaurant is relatively new (opened last fall) and apparently is a chain that has a number of locations in the DMV although this is the first one we've ever been to. The place has high ceilings, contemporary decor and colorful and fun wall murals. It feels like a fast casual restaurant although there is table service. There are tables both in and outdoors - the outside area is fully covered and enclosed with just the front opening to the street. You need to see the hostess for seating although when it's not too busy they just tell you to pick your own table. They still have plastic encased paper menus which is convenient. We had the tempura entree and shrimp katsu don. Both quite tasty - the tempura with 4 pieces of big shrimps and about a dozen pieces of different types of vegetables (broccoli, eggplant, peppers, zucchini etc) and rice, is quite enormous, a good sharing size. At $20 per entree pricing is comparable to most other Japanese restaurants in the area. They have a Japanese snack stand near the front selling stuff such as green tea and white chocolate KitKat however no Japanese rice crackers. My wife and I needed a quick dinner before going to the advance screening of "Arthur the King" at Regal Majestic theater. We walked up to the order counter at 5 p.m., and we were seated immediately at a table of our choice. We were given a large bottle of cold water, glasses, disposable chopsticks, and paper napkins. Even though they offer lots of sushi dishes, we didn't want to gamble on the time needed for food preparation. We got 2 noodle dishes. It took only 12 minutes for our food to be served. We ate and left at 5:46 pm. 1) Ramen "Fully Loaded" It had chashu pork belly, fish cake, lava egg, bamboo shoots, woodear mushroom, bean sprouts, scallions, corn, nori, and ramen in a pork based broth. There were 3 broth flavor choices: tonkotsu, miso, and spicy miso. We picked spicy miso. The broth was pretty spicy with a fermented flavor similar to rice wine used for cooking. It also had flavors of pork broth, salt, a hint of fish, and a very subtle tanginess. The broth was flavorful and satisfying. It was quite savory after adding the egg yolk and braised pork belly. All of the ingredients were high quality. Everything was cooked well except for one. The pork was moist and a bit chewy with a lightly grilled flavor. A delicious dish if you love miso! By the way, they make a great tasting miso soup. 2) Kusshi Noodles It had beef, chicken, shrimp, seasonal mixed vegetables, and stir-fried udon noodles in spicy drunken sauce. The sauce was sweet and spicy with flavors of soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, fish sauce, a hint of garlic, black pepper, and red chiles. Fresh ingredients and high quality throughout. Everything was cooked well except for the beef. It was a lean cut of beef, like round steak. It was moist but rather chewy. Whatever this cut was, it was not a good one for stir-fry. Other than that, this dish was incredibly well-rounded, savory, and flavorful. Hugh applause to the employees for their quick and friendly service. Everything was done efficiently, so we didn't feel rushed. The dining room and restrooms were very clean. Parking is available at Wayne Avenue garage and Fenton Street garage. If you shop at Whole Foods Market, they have free parking for 2 hours at the Wayne Avenue parking lot. We come here for their noodle dishes, but we're going to try a lot of their sushi next time. Kusshi sushi in Rockville is one of my favourite sushi spots, so I was very excited when they opened a location in downtown Silver Spring, way closer to the house. It took a bit before I got there, but I took my fiancee there for NYE. The restaurant is beautiful inside, though perhaps not as upscale as the Rockville location. It's also incredibly well lit, which is a nice change of pace from the average sushi place. We started off with takoyaki, octopus balls. They're usually very good from kusshi, but I was a little disappointed. They were light on the octopus and heavy on the filling. We also had soft shelled crabs, which were just amazing and made up for the octopus. We also ordered an apple elderflower sake. This, honestly, tasted more like a cider, and honestly felt like the waitress should have told us it wasn't a sake, but a canned beverage with a bit of sake in it. Not my fave, but we moved onto a regular house sake that was just fine. Our mains, sashimi and the 8+8 were excellent. Very fresh, good variety, and great flavour. I wish they came with miso by default, which is fairly typical of sushi meals. Portion size and fish size were also great. Don't skip out on dessert. My wife and I have both been to Kusshi in Rockville and Hanaro in Bethesda and loved them. We were so happy to have this place open in Silver Spring and signed up for their opening email listserv which gave us a coupon we didn't use. The day before I was informed of their soft opening we found them and ordered in UberEats and when we dined in person we were informed they were extending the deal the next day. I am surprised they are doing it since when we went last Friday it was packed. For our UberEats order we got the Vegan Ramen, Chicken Udon, Spicy Tuna Avocado Ball, Cherry Blossom Roll (our favorite anywhere), Bethesda Roll, Redskins Roll, and Ruby Roll. We loved it all and looked forward to going in person. Two weeks later our best friend wanted to see Till at the Regal Majestic so we chose to eat here before. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable and he suggested the Snow Beauty sake which we loved. For appetizers we got Miso Soup, Edamame (one spicy and one regular), Chicken Kaarage, and the Spicy Tuna Avocado Ball. Me and my wife shared the Bethesda, Cherry Blossom, Redskins, Ruby, Seared Spicy Salmon, and Philly rolls and our friend got the Rainbow, Salmon, and Tuna rolls. I am a huge fan of the Kusshi restaurant group. This location recently opened. The layout is like a fast casual type concept with table service as well. I loved the high ceilings and art murals on the walls. My friends were raving about their grand opening and this downtown Silver Spring one did not disappoint. My friends and I ordered a bunch of appetizers including the pork gyoza, Kusshi wings, Takoyaki, and the shrimp shumai. We found ourselves re ordering the gyoza, wings and Takoyaki. Everything is made fresh and hot. The chicken katsu and gyudon were delicious. The sauce and caramelized onions were perfect. The seared salmon belly was definitely the highlight of the evening. Between the 9 of us we each person had about 3-4 pieces. So glad Kusshi opened up close to home. This location blew us away. If you want less of a crowd this DTSS is it. Parking is easy to find and the Wholefoods shopping center has free parking. The service here was on point as well. Vibes here were great. The selection of discounted beer and sake during happy hour can't be beat in the area. If you want some quality sushi and a nice variety of drinks Kusshi is the spot. read more

I love Kusshi at pike and rose and am very happy to have one a little closer! The food was as good as the pike and rose location, although the menu seems a little more limited. We went on New Year's Eve. It was not very crowded because we went early, and we were seated right away. The restaurant is bright and the seats are colorful, and there's a large mural on the back wall. All of the food is excellent. We got the soft shell crab (delicious), takoyaki (pretty good, a little hot and not much octopus), and then my fiancé and I each got a sushi entree. I got the 8x8 VIP nigiri and sashimi sampler which was so delicious and fresh. Then we got mochi for dessert. I got the mango, strawberry, and salted caramel and I think the salted caramel was my favorite. The only meh part of the experience was the drinks. We ordered the elderflower apple sake to start and didn't realize that they were bottled sparkling sake. It didn't really taste anything like sake so we ordered the house sake to drink with the entrees, which was much better. I wish the menu had been labeled a little clearer as to what is a shareable bottle of sake and the bottled drinks. They do have excellent happy hour deals on both appetizers and drinks. It wasn't really the food that had the most impact for this visit but it was the customer service and lack of cleanliness. When I came in I followed the sign to go to the register to be seated. There were two people there chatting that didn't greet me back or anything so I asked to be seated and then one said oh you can sit anywhere. If that's the case why is there a sign saying to stop at the register? In the dining area, all of the tables that were open were dirty. Dishes still on the tables. Crumbs on the floor and tables, it was a mess. I was waiting for my friend to join me and was in the middle to texting them that we wouldn't be eating here. Then one of the people from the register seemed bothered and asked me if I would be sitting and I think it hit him that maybe the tables should be cleaned first. A table opened up and then someone started cleaning. That wasn't the best first impression at all. Our actual server was good and gave us some decent recommendations. The dumplings were fried nicely and you can't go wrong with seaweed, which was also good. As for rolls my friend had the seared spicy salmon - good. I had the Lava roll and there was an overwhelming amount of crunchy and mayo throughout the plate. We were able to enjoy most of it but it didn't seem like a balanced roll. We ended our meal with some salted caramel, cake batter and chocolate chip mochi with the chocolate chip being the favorite. I liked it more than the review implies. We got the Lava roll, Spicy tuna Avocado Ball, steamed shrimp shumai, the Spicy Mango roll and another I can't remember. The Lava roll, which it seems a lot of people get is definitely an experience and will feel like a pit in your stomach, but its really tasty. Also it kind of feels overkill and gimmicky. The Spicy Mango roll was nice and fresh and the shrimp shumai were nice. The spicy Tuna Avocado ball has A LOT going on, but it's also pretty flavorful and nice. Ambiance: it's cute and nice, but man is that outdoor space just kind of dank (by necessity) but sheesh, add some ambiance. at least try to compete vibes wise with Sushi Jin. Next I ordered takoyaki for the table. It was good, but one of the pieces hadn't fully thawed in the fryer. My entrees were the volcano, dragon, and veggie rolls. Each roll tasted great. My favorite was the volcano. The veggie roll was not wrapped as tightly so the veggies would start falling out when trying to eat it. One cool thing is that the restaurant brings the point of sale device to your table and you can pay immediately. Overall it was a great visit and I would definitely come again. read more

I really enjoyed coming back to this location! I don't usually go out for sushi much but when I do, Kusshi Susshi is my go to. This time I got the Loaded Spicy Miso Ramen, Seared Spicy Salmon, and Samurai Roll. Everything was delicious and one of the managers, Jordan, recommended me the Samurai roll which has now become my favorite. It has salmon skin in it which was crunchy and it was mostly cooked since I prefer "cooked" sushi. The chasu pork belly in the ramen was so flavorful as well that I ended up asking for extra :) The servers were very courteous and I had fun convos with them since I went alone. For those seeking a memorable meal, Kusshi Sushi is a definite must visit. With its inviting atmosphere and yummy food, I definitely plan to come back more often! read more

Had to use the bathroom and it was pretty nasty. Almost made us cancel our order. You HAVE to do better. Bathrooms reflect cleanliness for the entire restaurant. Location: the restaurant is located across from Whole Foods in downtown Silver Spring right in the middle of BurgerFi and H&M. There's plenty of parking in downtown silver spring but we parked in the two hour parking at Whole Foods. I hadn't been to downtown SS in a while and there are quite a few new restaurants. Ambiance & Customer Service: the restaurant is super cozy and is decorated with deep colors. It's pretty big inside and has a really cute outside seating area right when you walk-in. Everyone was really nice and immediately greeted us when we walked in. We stopped in on a Tuesday early afternoon so there wasn't really many people just hubby and I until a few others arrived. Food and drinks: hubby and I opted for: wings for appetizer (these were sooooo goodddd! I'd definitely order them again. They were sweet with a tiny bit of a kick and nice crunchy exterior yet juicy inside) Dragon , Lava, Baked creamy California and tempura sweet potatoes. The sushi was really good. My favorite was the Lava roll. The rest were good but I found the sweet potato roll a bit on the dry/tough side .I also ordered a sake bomb and that was sooo good and they even gave me the rest of the beer on the house !
