It is located in Bethesda in a small shopping center off of Hampden Lane... parking can be tight so anticipate looking for parking if you come on the weekend. There is parking right in front of the restaurant as well as street parking and nearby garages within walking distance. We ordered the following: - Yakitori - It was average, not amazing and not terrible... I did like that they used alot of sauce. - Sukiyaki - This comes cooked in an iron pot with Thin Sliced Beef, Tofu, Nappa, Potato Noodle, Scallion, and Sweet Soy Sauce. The broth was a little bland for my taste, but my husband enjoyed it. - Volcano Roll - This comes with Salmon, Sesame Seeds, Cucumber, Avocado and Tempura bits. This was really tasty, it had just the right amount of sauce. - Tuna Tempura Roll with Spicy Sauce - This was good, rolls were smaller than I anticipated though... - Tuna Avocado Roll - You can't really mess this up! Another good pick :) Overall the sushi was good, the fish was fresh and the prices were all reasonable. Service was decent, it was super busy so it did take awhile to have our drinks refilled and to receive the check. I feel thoroughly disappointed by the treatment I have received by the staff and the decline in the food quality during my recent two visits. My family and I were fond of visiting Tako Grill for nearly 2 decades. We have very good memories of the dining experience and the food quality when they were still at the Wisconsin Avenue location. Whenever we had business/family dinner, and/or introducing non -Japanese people to our culture, this has been the place we've always chosen because of their past history of food quality and the display of omotenashi ( i.e., Japanese hospitality/customer service). I visited the new Tako Grill location back in 2015 and did not enjoy the unfriendly treatment I received from the owner's wife during lunch hour along with very bad tasting unaju I ate. The fish made me very sick and I swore to myself I never wanted to go back there again. Well, recently, I found out that a very dear friend of mine has never really had Japanese food before. So, after the bad experience in 2015 and swearing I don't ever want to go eat there again, I chose to take her to Take Grill based on fond old memories there. What a big mistake that was. I am still full of regrets. During this particular visit, I ordered their Tonkatsu Bento Box. The pork within the katsu was barely there and it was harder than rock and drier than burnt bread. It was just so chewy in such a way it made me feel sad because I know they could have done a much better job than that. I am also aware that depending on who they think they're serving, the food quality can be much better. The tonkatsu I was served was not anything I've ever tasted before and not in a good way at all. For the rest of the bento box, the shrimp shumai dumplings were soggy and mushy. The omelette and the cooked vegetables were tasteless. Adding one piece of barely cooked piece of broccoli just made no sense in a bento box meal. All in all, the whole meal tasted awful and it was just insulting. But perhaps the most disappointing part of it all was the glaring and staring I kept receiving by the owner's wife. I really hate to spell things out like this but we are not in Japan. The restaurant will not just have Japanese customers only and there are going to be customers who are now just learning about Japanese food and culture. Sure, you can sneer at my friend who has never had anything with miso in it and be rude to her about it when she asked about it. Yes, you can laugh and speak ill about the matter from the corner register within earshot of where we were seated. Unfortunately, I do speak and understand Japanese even if you don't think I do. I am also not deaf. One of the beauty of going to a Japanese owned restaurant is the spirit and the demonstration of omotenashi. This entails treating customers such as my non-Japanese speaking friends with patience and respect. Omotenashi is showing what differentiates Japanese style of hospitality and ensuring that no guests are unsatisfied or uncomfortable. I am sad to put it this way but all I got to witness and experience again at Tako Grill was another round of salient displays of ethnocentrism and xenophobia. Coupled that with an awful tasting meal that was independent of the rude service, I cannot say that I am inclined to recommend this place to anyone I know again. read more

This is the new location for Tako Grill. It's smaller than the old location but still has a similar set up. The menu is the same with my favorite, the soft shell crab maki. This time eating there I also enjoyed the agedofu, and the gyouza were really wonderful. I've eaten at the old location many times, and this place is solid. Many Japanese people consider this to be one of the best real Japanese restaurants in the DC area. There is a Japanese chef. Parking is annoying and expensive at this new location though. read more

I ordered the rainbow roll and two eel unagi... the size of the order was disappointing, and it felt pricey. We spent about $25-30 between the two of us but our dishes totaled about 650 calories or less... I left feeling hungry and with not enough energy to think about playing a racquet sport, which was part of my original plan after lunch. Tako Grill management - if your looking for suggested improvements, remove the TV from the dining room (a Japanese drama with cross dressing men slapping each other was showing while we were there), chill the beer more, and consider walling off the kitchen area next to the sushi bar (utility sink and unused kitchen gear don't add anything to the dining experience). read more

It would have been nicer if the fish was seasoned better, as the dish was a bit bland, but it was definitely healthy and both the fish and avocado were great. I also liked the large poke chip! Yum! The lunch pricing isn't very competitive, but the sushi was good and I wouldn't mind coming back here. Two of us stopped by for a weekday lunch and were seated immediately. My friend ordered 2 maki rolls a la carte and I ordered the sashimi lunch. The maki rolls each came with 6 pieces but were pretty disappointing in size, especially since they cost around $10 total. My sashimi lunch came with miso soup and salad and generous cuts of sashimi that left me stuffed. I wouldn't mind coming back here, but I'd stick to Gaithersburg/Rockville for better value for sushi. read more

I've been a fan of this place since their Wisconsin Ave location and although the location has changed, the quality certainly has not! The service is great, the sushi is impeccable and it's worth getting the Jo Sushi or Omakase Chirashi to see what the sushi chefs deem best that day. The ramen is delicious, and they do a Goma Ae green beans appetizer that I've never seen anywhere else. I don't live in Maryland anymore, but I usually come to Tako Grill whenever I visit and it never disappoints. read more

I've been going to Tako since I was in elementary school. It is admittedly my favorite moderately priced Japanese restaurant in the DMV. It's not perfect, but it's very good and generally consistent. Tako used to have a larger location on Wisconsin Avenue, but moved to the smaller current location on Hampden Lane this past February. This decision seems to have worked in their favor, as their food and service have improved slightly since the move. I generally prefer their sushi to their cooked food. Their Tamago (egg omelet) is delicious and made the old-fashioned way (in house, by hand), which is seldom done anymore in Japanese restaurants. Their deep fried spicy tuna roll is very tasty and unique. The sushi rice is always done correctly and their nori is high quality (super important). The fish is always fresh. Of their cooked food, the soy sauce ramen is my favorite. Best ramen in MD in my opinion, although there is better ramen in DC proper. I've had all their terriyaki dishes before (chicken, steak, and seafood). Those are kind of a mixed bag-- generally okay tasting, but too heavily sauced and sometimes poorly cooked. I used to like their steak terriyaki a lot until one time when the steak was chewy to the point of not really being edible. Service is generally very good, unless they're super busy, then it's a bit slow. Tako has its strong points and its weaker ones, but, overall, there is more stregnth in this restaurant than weakness. My family and I have been coming here for almost 20 years and have brought countless friends and relatives to eat here because we know we can trust them to give us a good meal at a fair price. We've courted a lot of other Japanese restaurants in the past two decades and considered some of them as potential new favorites (hey-- 20 years is a long time and we're only human!), but, like that one true love that you can't help but miss when you're apart, we always find ourselves back at Tako. read more

Right off of the bat the best shrimp shumai that I've ever had. That's a pretty epic way to start the meal. As far as sushi selection they cater to high quality fish and let that speak for itself. Nigiri and sashimi options but very few rolls. I'm not complaining I love high quality sushi. We got a sashimi sampler, volcano roll, salmon nigiri and California roll with tobiko. The sashimi was fresh and delicious, the volcano roll was amazing, I actually ordered one to go as well, the California roll was good and salmon nigiri was fresh but just a heads up only 1 piece per order. I'm sure they said they somewhere but we were surprised to see one piece of salmon. The a la carte prices are a little steep, I wouldn't recommend doing that. Rather I would order one of their samplers. Service was mediocre at best but I didn't except amazing service here. There is a little lot to park in but just a heads up my parking ticket cost half as much as my meal. read more

I work in the area, and found myself wandering. Weather was gorgeous the Friday I went, and why not walk around looking for food? And I found Tako Grill. It isn't really on Bethesda Row...more like behind...or on top of, depending on if you drive into the parking lot, or walk up the stairs (this will make sense if you see it...I promise). The foodie in me loved the sushi I got here. It was so fresh, and looked very delicate, probably some of the prettiest sushi I have ever seen...and it was only a spicy tuna roll and a volcano roll. The 'Murican in me is ashamed that I paid nearly $30 for a teensy portion of food and wishes it was bigger and meatier. I even ordered a gyoza on the side, and it was all just so damn... delicate. Overall, I don't think this is where you want to be if you just want a quick lunch during work hours. Not that that is the only thing restaurants have to offer, but considering the location...it might be beneficial to have a lunch menu here. read more

I have to give them a 5 star. It's not the best sushi I have had but the variety and authenticity in overall Japanese cuisine is terrific. The Sukiyaki is good, I am a fan of the Izakaya and Chirashi. They have Yakitori and Tempura and other treats. Some of my favorite items were the Shitake mushrooms and the flounder fin. You can make this expensive or inexpensive. Sakis are delicious and they have several Junmai options. The owner is a sweetie pie and the food very clean and tasty. Terrific go-to for the Japanese cuisine fix I have from time to time. If you are not familiar with Japanese cuisine this is a great place to go explore in a safe, Bethesda like land. read more

My mom and I have been going to Tako Grill since I was in elementary school (around 20 years) - it's our favorite mother-daughter sushi date spot. Two unique items that they have, and i love, are their orange roughy (which isn't a sushi roll) and their tuna tempura roll. The other rolls are fantastic as well. Tako Grill was acceptable but not outstanding, a rather boring choice that made us wish we'd traveled into the city for a better sushi lunch special. The three "SP Roll" option, at $15.50 more than most of our favorite more flavorful and fresher lunch special options, included a salmon avocado roll, a shrimp avocado roll, and a Firecracker roll. All three rolls had too much bland rice, and after waiting five minutes I had to flag a waiter down and ask for some soy sauce, as there was none around. The salmon avocado was perfectly passable. The shrimp avocado tasted off, and didn't get finished. The Firecracker roll, which was tuna with spicy mayo and tempura bits, was exceedingly greasy - turns out very cold pieces of tempura frying are just really oily and don't add the satisfying crunch that I think they were going for. For the cost and flavor, I'd head back to Sushi Taro or another city one instead. read more

When you roll over the stars on Yelp, 5 stars is supposed to mean "As good as it gets". This place is honestly as good as it gets. Everything about Tako Grill is utterly exceptional, from the decor to the staff to the food. I work right by here and go there several times each week since they opened. My favorite entree is the Chicken Teriyaki, by far the best teriyaki I have ever had from any restaurant. Ever. It comes with a side salad, miso soup (which I don't usually like at other places but LOVE here), cooked carrots, broccoli and rice. The chicken is cooked and seasoned beyond perfection. For lunch it is only about $14 and is MORE than enough food to fill you up. I was never a huge sushi fan until I went here. I don't like avocado in my sushi, so they let me sub cucumber instead. Game changer. My personal favorite is the fire cracker roll and the salmon roll. Everything is so fresh and that really makes all the difference. They pay attention to detail, even during the busy dinner rush. The staff are some of the most wonderfully helpful people I've encountered in any restaurant. They are always great with making recommendations based on past orders and are very friendly. The owners seem to genuinely care about your experience, which is truly refreshing (especially in the Bethesda area). I had never been to their previous location so I can't speak to how it compares. However I will say that they more than filled the void in my heart (and stomach!) left when Hinode closed.This is one of my all time favorite places in the area and I cannot say enough good about them. Tako was our go-to sushi place when it was at its old Wisconsin Avenue location. We mourned its passing. Apparently by the way it was all for nought. The staff at the new location told me that Tako was kicked out by its former landlord who intended to sell the property. Tako found its new space on Hampden, then the original landlord's deal fell through. So Tako is in a new location, and landlord has an empty restaurant storefront. Serves him right! Back to Tako. The new space is much smaller than the old space. There is not bar. There are no beers on draft. Having a cold Kirin Ichiban draft at the old location was one of the true pleasures of eating at Tako. Sushi is still good and fresh. There is little innovation, but it's good. We didn't have grilled food this time, and having a grill is one of Tako's nice advantages over the typical sushi joint. Service was good. Our server was young, possibly high school or college, and sweet. Sushi orders come out pretty fast. Their miso soup is among the best I've ever had anywhere. We ordered house sake in a carafe, and it came out hot and ready in about 3 minutes, wonderful and amazing. We will return. I gave the old place 5 stars consistently, the new place gets 4 stars because it just doesn't seem as special and cool as the old place. read more

I am guessing this place is new? This place is not bad for being a sushi place. The sushi was SUPER fresh since we ordered the specials for that week. The pieces were a bit too thick compared to other places and how they slice their sashimi. My favorite was the chicken teriyaki lunch special with the white rice, salad, miso soup and California rolls. The chicken was absolutely amazing! You think it's crazy to say that the chicken was great because it is impossible to cook the chicken wrong but it is possible! This chicken teriyaki was cooked perfectly, it was dried or chewy. Right amount of texture and bite to it and having the sauce really topped it off! And with the fresh steamed vegetables, it made the dish a lot more healthier compared than other places! read more

The yakitori is a good deal. But the service can be so attentive it borders on intrusive. This is the rare Japanese restaurant that feels overstaffed. Also, the fish is not being handled by someone who understands manners. If you run out of something one night and are unable to include it in a dish that specifically lists it as an ingredient, you tell your servers to warn people BEFORE they order a dish. Otherwise, this is false advertisement. On the rare occasion you run out of something in the middle of the night before you can tell the servers, you make sure to train them to be up front about it instead of simply replacing the missing ingredient with a more expensive substitute without apology or request for permission. read more
