No traditional Easter dinner for us this year. I had all three of my children in town (Yay me!) and, if you know me by now, you already know we're hitting up a sushi spot. My fav location this month is Sushi Freedom. I swear I've been here 3 or 4 times this month. (I also knew it's been a little too frequently because I walked in and Peter addressed me by name. We listen and we don't judge.) I have nothing new to report. Just trust they deserve all the feels, yet AGAIN. Hope you enjoy the pics of our feast from this visit. Ok we stumbled upon this place by accident and were so pleasantly surprised! They market themselves as AYCE, but I didn't see anything about that inside, nor did our waitstaff seem to offer it. Maybe it's only specific days/times of the week? We split 4 rolls. Here they are in order of how much I liked them (and I really liked all of them!) Caught in a Bad Romance Shrimp tempura, kani, avocado & cucumber inside, tobiko outside, crunch, spicy mayo and eel sauce on the top Super Salmon Roll Salmon tempura & avocado inside, salmon, crunchy and chef's spicy sauce Kamikaze Roll Spicy salmon, crunch, cream cheese, and avocado topped with jalapeno, special sauce, sriracha Mango Roll Shrimp tempura and avocado inside, topped with lobster and fresh mango, wrapped in pink soy crepe, and drizzled with eel sauce and mango sauce. My Wife (and BFF!) and I noticed Sushi Freedom took over the old Dairy Queen spot, and since we saw it had pretty good ratings, we decided to check it out. Honestly, it didn't really meet the standards of those high ratings for us. When we got in, we only had to wait about 5 to 7 minutes to be seated. The waiter was nice, friendly, and quick with the food. However, the menus are completely overwhelming. There is so much to choose from, and honestly, when I see a restaurant offering that many options, I start to wonder if the food will actually be great. You can't be a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. We ordered a few things to try. The absolute highlight was the Shrimp Egg Rolls. The shrimp was good, the cabbage inside was good, it wasn't too greasy, and the outer shell was perfectly crispy. I would literally go back just to place a to-go order for those. The Gyoza, on the other hand, was not a great surprise. It just wasn't good, and I wouldn't order it again. For my main, we got the Combination Fried Rice. They give you an absolute mountain of it, so much that we ate there and still took a huge container home for two more meals. They don't skimp on the meat; there was plenty of chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp. The problem? It was completely flavorless. When I took it home, I heated it up in a pan with some garlic butter, and it was phenomenal. It tasted so much better that My Wife literally asked, "Is that the same rice we had?" For sushi, we did the three-roll lunch deal. My Wife got the California Roll, and I got the Spicy Tuna Roll. Both were good, but nothing to write home about. I also added the Chicken Tempura Roll just to try something different from my usual shrimp. That was my own fault--I should have known better because it's chicken, not real sushi. It wasn't bad, it was just weird, and I definitely wouldn't do it again. Overall, we have a couple of other sushi spots we go to all the time that are consistently fresh with much better flavor. This is our go to sushi place after work. Conveniently located. I took my kiddo there for lunch - it's an AYCE spot. Got seated right away. The staff are very attentive, lots of food options and clean. We started with crab Rangoon, minced chicken with lettuce wrap, and egg drop soup. Then for entrees, tuna lover, butterfly, sushi freedom, volcano, and Godzilla rolls. Enjoyed them, fast service and it only cost us about $50 - not bad at all for Sushi. Sushi Freedom delivers one of the better AYCE sushi experiences I've had in the area. Plenty of free parking right outside and a good amount of seating, plus a private room for families and small parties. Everything is made-to-order - fresh rolls! The sashimi was fresh and not frozen like some AYCE places. The menu has sashimi, sushi/nigiri, specialty rolls, hand rolls, and also hot items. We ordered multiple rounds of rolls and sashimi and were impressed how fresh everything tasted, especially for AYCE. They bring them out on a sushi boat when you order a lot, nice touch! I love that didn't skimp on the presentation just because it's AYCE! They just added beef and chicken teriyaki - both were solid! They even had sweet shrimp sashimi and fried whole soft shell crab for dinner service - unique eats for AYCE! Service was also efficient and friendly, keeping plates coming without rushing us. For the variety, quality, and value, Sushi Freedom is a great option when you're craving AYCE but still want more than just basic rolls like some buffets. This was my fourth time eating here, and tonight they crammed everyone into one section with a single server, even though most of the restaurant was empty. The conversations around me were a bit distracting. Tonight we ordered: * Pot of green tea -- standard, but I would've liked a Splenda option. I ended up using my grandmother's Sweet'N Low from the table. * Steamed shumai -- excellent. * Crab rangoon -- just okay, but the sauce was fantastic. * Hot and sour soup -- good. * Cucumber salad -- crisp and enjoyable, though a bit overdressed for my taste. * Steak and cheese rolls -- too greasy and nothing special; wouldn't order again. We also ordered six rolls, and they were excellent this time. The downside was the service. It felt like our server wanted us to order everything at once and leave, which made the experience less friendly than I prefer. I've been here with a group of ten before, and while the variety of dishes made it incredibly fun, the service has always been inconsistent. Overall, the food is good and very fairly priced for how much I can eat, but the service continues to be hit or miss. I came here with my husband on a Wednesday night and it was super busy. We were seated pretty promptly. It took a while to have our order taken since there was only one waiter but he was friendly and fast. I split the chow fan and I had the 2 in 1 spicy roll. It was my first time here and never had their food. Service: Customer Service was good. No complaints. When I arrived I was greeted and seated right away. My waiter and waitress came pretty quickly. My food orders came out in a pretty timely fashion. Again it was empty so I can't speak on how their timing will be at busier hours. The Lollipop Roll needs to be on your rotation if you're low-carb, and they're kind enough to serve vinaigrette on the side. Baby octopus salad was tender, not very complex. Soft shell crab was over battered pieces, not much crab flavor. OK, I am too accustomed to freshly steamed blue crabs. Other lunch choices worth mentioning: Fuji roll didn't meet expectations. I tried it because it claimed lump crab meat. Again, this Maryland boy has really high standards for crab. Tuna tartare is a hidden gem. Chunks of tuna and avocado in a soy/uzu vinaigrette. Very nice. Will be in the rotation. If you have room for a sweet finish, sesame balls are good. Went with a friend who did the lunch buffet...I had the Thai Curry Chicken lunch special. I was very encouraged, because the egg drop soup was delicious...but the dry noodles to go in it were soggy. The Thai Curry Chicken was unlike any Asian food I've ever had. Rather than a light curry sauce, it had a very thick, heavy sauce. And honestly, the garlic was so strong that I couldn't find any flavor of curry at all. The egg roll was way too hard and crunchy. It was hard to find much filling, I think that got fried along the way...it spent way too much time in the fryer! On Monday late afternoon, I had an early dinner at this restaurant with a colleague of mine. I ordered an eel roll, a salmon roll, a volcano, and tea. My bill was $41.63 plus the waitress herself added $8.33 as tips. So total is $49.96. The eel roll was terrible. There was no eel fish in the roll but the skin. The expensive volcano roll was fried, which I had never expected. So that means the sushi chef is clueless about what a volcano roll is. The salmon roll was okay. And my stomach has been upset since Tuesday morning. So many uncountable trips to the bathroom ever since Tuesday morning. The waitress' behavior was bad also, no matter how many times I tried to be nice to her. I will never go to this place again. I don't recommend this place. I'm still recovering from food poisoning, even 2 days after. read more

The ambience looks the same as the old place and I did notice they have a large private dining area in the corner. They have an extensive menu featuring sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and Asian fusion dishes. The food is made to order and comes out rather quickly. I would recommend ordering as much as you can when you first get there because I read that some diners said wait times can be long. The quality of the fish was high. They feature yellow tail, soft shell crab, salmon tartar, scallops, sweet shrimp and variety of fun rolls. I love the variety here and I saw some dinners coming in for the typical Chinese and Japanese dishes. I am giving this place 5 stars because of the value and service that you receive here. This used to be called Koi and it wasn't all you can eat before. It's the same exact restaurant. I like the ambiance- reminds me of those Chinese restaurants my parents used to take me as a kid. The menu items are all pretty much the same with the option to do all you can eat. We got the chicken yakisoba but the taste wasn't quite what I was looking for- it tasted a bit bland, lacking that kick of flavor but still tasty for those who want a simple chicken noodle dish. The salmon roll up is always a favorite! Our salmon lover and spider rolls and nigiri were standard to the restaurant and didn't disappoint. We also ordered the sesame balls and edamame but didn't get a picture of those. We're happy one of our go to spots is now all you can eat! We will be going again to they their other non sushi options. What sucked is we went close to closing time and the staff started mopping the floor and the smell of the cleaning agent was so powerful that it kind of ruined part of the meal. Because we of that, we rushed to eat and asked to get the rest to go- maybe they were being coy to have us hurry up which did work although we weren't planning to linger. So grateful we were able to take our other food home. I really enjoyed my dinner at Sushi Freedom. The name is a bit deceiving because they actually serve Thai, Japanese and Chinese food. The portions are plentiful and the service is very friendly. Alex and Amy in particular were just really attentive. I just came back from a trip and felt under the weather and the Ramen made me feel so good on the inside. The broth alone was so flavorful. My daughter got the orange chicken and my son and husband both got Beef and Broccoli and everyone was pleased. Amazing new All You Can Eat Sushi place off Colesville Road in Silver Spring. I heard about it on Facebook late last week and decided to come with my wife since we had a couple hours to kill yesterday and were hungry. So glad to have a place closer to us but it is a bit of a bus ride or drive up from downtown. We took Uber there and then one to Glenmont to head downtown for an event. This is one of the better AYCE sushi places and they have al a carte if you do not want the AYCE menu or want other Asian food options. The service is fast and friendly and there is ample seating across the restaurant. Luckily they were quite busy on a Sunday afternoon but not full. We tried various appetizers which had huge portions and then had eight rolls to share which we all loved. One of our sushi platters came with color changing decoratings which was a very nice touch. The portions of fish on the nigiri was good, and there was a large variety of rolls to choose from. Definitely my new go to for ayce sushi. Only negative is there wasn't too many actual hot food options on the menu, and there is no dessert options on the ayce. I had came here with my bf didn't even serve us waters but everyone else they did and just made me feel some type of way. And they kept looking at us and today I went but with my best friend and the same lady's straight up rude and tried to charge us automagically tip and nowhere in that restaurant it says automatic tip will be applied so I asked them to removed it because they tried to say the machine automatically did that. Ruined my Mother's Day experience. The waitress, despite me and my child getting the all you could eat option, was policing how much I ordered insisted that I had to finish everything on my plate or else she would get in trouble with the manager. Nowhere is it listed on the menu that you have a limit to what you can get or that you have to eat it all if you order more than they want to give you. I would have ordered less and different things had I known ahead of time. Or likely would have chosen a regular buffet instead. I frequented this restaurant quite often when it was Koi. I loved the vegetable based sushi and the General Tso's tofu. Everything was fresh tasting, and some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. I hadn't had the General Tso's tofu and sushi since the restaurant changed ownership. So I decided to order it tonight via Uber Eats. Highly disappointed. I got the inari sushi roll and what I thought was my favorite General Tso's tofu. The wasabi with the sushi was terrible. It was chalky and barely gave the sinus opening spicy quality wasabi is known for. The rice was barely hanging on to the seaweed. 2 thumbs down. The tofu used to have that saucy but crispy quality. The sauce used to be thicker. What I got tonight was squishy, soggy, fried tofu. The sauce was watery and there was way too much of it. And worst of all, there was a bad after-taste. Like old oil after-taste. Some may say that this is a result of ordering through Uber Eats. But I've had Koi (same dish) that I ordered using Uber Eats and never had this problem.
