This is my new favorite spot and I know it'll fast become my go-to for pickup and dine-in, seeing as it's right around the corner. It has a very non descript and easy to miss exterior. I don't even think the name is outside though there are signs saying "sushi." Inside it's simple but cozy and clean. There are only about 10 tables so come early. Sushi/sashimi is, not surprisingly given the name, the specialty, and dishes seem to come with complimentary salad with a bright ponzu and sesame dressing. We loved all of the following: - tempura appetizer which came with two shrimp, one broccoli, one onion, and one green bean: fairly light batter, perfectly crispy, not oily - spicy scallop roll (loved this one and you don't see it about these days for some reason) - salmon avocado roll - yellowtail roll with green onion - chirashi bowl (included tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper?, tamago, imitation crab, and a little seaweed, avocado, cucumber, and roe over rice) Prices are very reasonable and the service is friendly and efficient. Hole in the wall sushi place that serves great sushi. Feels more like it belongs in Seattle or the Bay Area than Cabin John. This is an eminently respectable sushi place nailing all the key pieces while having a few really standout things. When you walk in, it feels like a tiny hole in the wall with only a few tables and a small bar they're preparing the actual food at. The sushi chef doesn't seem to speak any English. All of that adds to the general atmosphere. It's a bit brighter than I might like, but still classy and nice. The actual food is good, if not the best sushi I've had in DC. The standout is the yellowtail. Both the nigiri and the roll were better than the tuna or the salmon. The octopus (take) and eel (unagi) were a bit underwhelming. We also tried the bulgogi, tempura, egg nigiri, and inary in the hopes that our kids would eat them. The bulgogi was great and one of our kids loved it. The egg and inary were sweet as expected and yummy for what they were, but neither adults nor kids craved them. The tempura was lightly fried and delicious. The shrimp and yam in particular were great. All of that would make this a solid 4-4.5 star sushi place, but the location down the street from us bumps it easily to 5. read more

I ordered one of the shrimp speciality rolls and it was sooooo good. The meal was also served with miso soup and a small salad. The shrimp tempura we had was amazing too and all the seafood was really fresh! The restaurant itself is really cozy and welcoming. We've been regulars at this restaurant, often bringing our daughters for dinner, but after our last experience, we won't be returning. While having dinner, we unexpectedly ran into old friends that we hadn't seen in years. It was a joyful reunion, and we were excitedly catching up in an entirely empty restaurant when the sole waitress rudely covered her ears and told me to quiet down and sit down. It was embarrassing and completely uncalled for. Even the sushi chef told her in Japanese that she shouldn't have said that. Her behavior ruined what should have been a special evening. I put in a take out order and was told it would be ready in 45 mins. When I arrived they told me the order was not ready. I waited 10 mins. A woman then asked me for what my order had been. She started putting in my order and told me it would be 30 mins wait as they made the sushi. No apology for not taking the original order. I left. We will not come back here again. read more

The restaurant is a small space, and so there is a good bit of carry out traffic close by, but the food was delectable. Menu choices were good. Takeout from this restaurant was very good, but we were quite frustrated when (on a second occasion) we attempted to dine in. There were a number of waitstaff -- nearly as many servers as there were tables -- and although it's structured as table service, they were focused on the telephone and takeout orders, neglecting our table. We had to approach the counter to ask for menus, and water, and so on. An initial order we placed was forgotten. Two members of our group eventually received their dinners, but the remaining 3 of us were delayed longer -- so long that the first two had finished their meals. I recommend that the restaurant switch to counter service for the dine-in option. read more

This restaurant just opened recently right next to Captain's Market on MacArthur. They have a wide selection of starters and rolls at moderate prices. We tried the gyoza, eel and avocado roll, spicy crab roll and the Alaskan roll, all of which were very fresh and tasty. We just ordered takeout, but they have a small dining room (casual but bright and cheerful). A family with young children were eating in when I picked up my order. Staff were efficient and friendly. It's so nice to finally have a Japanese restaurant in the area. The appetizers are really tasty and the sushi is really good. It's very fresh and well made. It also comes with miso soup and a salad. The prices are reasonable and the portions are a nice size. They have a small but nice section to sit down inside. It's not hard to get a table though as it seems they do a good take out business. New hole-in the-wall sushi restaurant just opened on MacArthur, yeah!!. We've stopped by several times and sampled multiple dishes. This place is a keeper. We've been treated to very good quality rolls, nigiri, and sashimi - fish is super fresh, pleasant atmosphere, fast and courteous service. One thing to note and I just verified: they close every day from around 2:30-4:00pm despite the hours on the door suggesting they are open all day, so forget about that Sunday half-time mid-afternoon sushi snack and make sure you get there before or after. Only problem with this place is that my wife likes it so much she wants to eat there every day! Oh well... happy wife, happy life, right? read more
