I came to Kusshi to take advantage of their HH before a Yelp event. Since traffic is unpredictable, I love to arrive early and hangout in the area prior whenever I get a chance. It had been a minute since I had sushi so when I looked up the interesting restaurant across from where I parked, I couldn't help but go inside and since it was still HH I rushed to pay my parking and headed inside. There weren't a lot of patrons inside and absolutely no one at the bar so I made my way in in and grabbed a seat right in the middle. There was a young lady behind the bar and I jokingly asked where everybody else was; to which she informed me they'd be here soon. She gave me multiple menus and I looked over each one of them of course paying extra attention to the happy hour specials. I decided to go with the salmon avocado maki and yellowtail scallion maki. They have been open for over 15 years and rebranded a few years back with multiple locations including Pike and Rose. There are a few other items on the menu I would like to try so I definitely can see myself coming back. Do you see how cute the sauce bowl is?!

I've gotten takeout from here a few times and have also stopped in for happy hour, and I'm glad they added a location in the area. It's a nice go-to spot for sushi and Asian bites, with a well-decorated space and really sweet staff. This time I ordered the Firecracker Roll and the Kusshi noodles. The roll was very filling and delicious, even if not traditional sushi. The noodles had a good amount of vegetables, which I appreciated, though they could use a little more flavor. Overall, a reliable spot that I'll definitely keep coming back to.

Been here a few times and I've loved every visit! FOOD 5/5 - no complaints. Their portions are great. I've tried a few of their rolls, sides, and the cutlet with rice.... all amazing and filling. SERVICE 5/5 - super friendly and attentive. The owner was there the last time I went to go pick up a takeout order and he's very interactive and friendly. AMBIANCE - nice natural lighting all throughout, bar seating is available, plenty of seating. Will be back time after time

I came here after happy hour around the corner on Saturday night. I was surprised they were open so late, but I was grateful. However, the food left a lot to be desired. Let me be clear: five stars for service. That is the only reason why I'm giving them three stars at all. The sweet young woman working at the bar Knew I was not feeling the food. She was extremely accommodating and extremely apologetic with my dissatisfaction. I ordered a cherry blossom roll and added cream cheese, and I ordered the Gyoza. The gyoza were so damn bland. Like, I got them panfried, and they were some of the blandest things I've ever tasted at a Japanese restaurant. The cherry blossom roll was also extremely bland. And I know that some rolls aren't hyper flavorful, but the fish just tasted... Cold. I like to think that good quality fish and sushi has a certain distinct flavor. But this fish just tasted cold lol. It seems like there are two sides to this restaurant or this restaurant also doubles is another. I'm not quite clear as there's another name outside of the restaurant. However, the restaurant was very clean and he didn't have any bad smells, which of these days is a luxury. The vibe was pretty chill. I sat at the bar. There were like four or five middle-aged, married men also sitting at the bar. They were talking about traveling and points. I'm sure their wives would be thrilled. Lol anyway, the larger issue is that I have now been to three different locations for Kusshi. None has blown my mind or even been really good...

Kusshi has a lot of great variety! We had a large party and everyone was happy with their different selections. Our service was very eh. Slow but very nice. Make sure you really take time to look through the menu. There's lots of great options but not necessarily organized! We all loved the Nutella dessert sushi but almost missed it!

Paid street and garage parking available. I'm not sure if all the Kusshi Sushi are a chain or franchise but this location is a lot worst than my experience at Kusshi Pike & Rose. I got the California roll which I was mid on but everything on their menu seemed so pricey so what it was. California roll was $7.5 (6 pcs), spicy tuna roll $9. It would be fine if it was worth the price but the rice tasted old and cold and crabmeat looked and tasted like it came out the freezer 2 minutes before they assembled and served it to us. I saw a mom & daughter get the chicken teriyaki that looks good but they barely touched it & just thought they were full until I also got it. This is probably the worst chicken teriyaki I've ever had for $19. Even those teriyaki way/hibachi grill to-go places are miles better. The chicken looks a bit pink and tasted rubbery, oily, & salty. We also got the Nutella roll which was decent but no picture cause it was not played very well compared to the pike & rose location. Our server was good initially but we just waited around for 15-20 mins before able to put in the Nutella roll as our desert and getting the check. Ambiance was friendly and felt like a nice Friday dinner spot. I personally would not return but my friend liked her vegetarian sushi rolls and I can't speak to the other rice bowls or ramen dish, perhaps they are better than what I got.

    Edamame, Shishito Peppers
    Pia A.

My go-to spot for sushi in Bethesda. Their specialty rolls are so tasty. My favorite one has to be the samurai roll with the crab and salmon skin. And I always get the shishito peppers to start. Tip: ask them to toss it in the spicy sauce they use for the edamame. Also, they started having some seasonal specials. I had a crudo before, I think hamachi - whichever fish it was, it was fresh, light, and delicious. I like to sit at the bar and chat it up with the bartenders. Jade is super sweet and it's always nice to see her when I visit.

I was in the area to meet with my sushi-loving sister. We purposely selected Kusshi because we wanted to go all out and get a sushi boat. Kusshi did not disappoint. The amount of sushi on the boat was just massive and we did our best to finish it between three people, but couldn't. The service was good, parking was a bit tricky, though. Overall a pretty great place. Come hungry!

    Sashimi & Nigiri Boat (72pc)
    Jesse K.

I don't think I would come here for any reason tbh. I ordered the boat - I feel like that's the way you can tell how good the sushi restaurant is. If you want roll, that would be okay. I just didn't feel like sushi chef is skillful enough to serve the sashimi or nigiri. Rice for the nigiri isn't seasoned properly and I feel like they made with the tool. Rice portion of the nigiri was consistently too much. Sashimi wasn't cut properly. Boat combination wasn't including the miso soup. When I order sushi boat from other place, I remember it was always included. Interior design is quite clean and nice. But what my one star for it. It took 30 minutes to receive my order when other people was getting their food within 15 minute or so. I'm really disappointed with pretty much a lot of thing.

This is my third time dinning at Kusshi in downtown Bethesda and have mixed feelings about my experience. The food was undeniably good. The sushi was fresh, the flavors were spot on, and the presentation was appealing. However, the service was absolutely terrible. We were immediately seated at the bar, and from what we could see, the restaurant was empty. Our first server was not a bartender but worked to get our drinks made and food order in. Despite the quick seating, the service soon took a turn for the worse. It's a shame because the food has potential, but the poor service overshadowed what could have been a pleasant dining experience. I hope Kusshi can address these issues because good food deserves equally good service.

    Susie W.

Since moving to Bethesda, I have enjoyed many nights at Kusshi. The fish is super fresh, the menu is wide, and the prices are reasonable! There's typically seats available, regardless if you make a reservation, or you can snag a seat at the bar and grab a drink while you wait. Service is hit or miss - lots of super young staff who don't pay you much attention.

    Salmon teriyaki
    David H.

Came to Kusshi for Friday dinner. Packed at dinner time. Three of us ended at the sushi bar, which seemed a little odd, as no one ever joined us at the sushi bar later that evening. But we were in a hurry so it was fine. Apps ordered: grilled chicken yakitori (pretty tasty, on bed of cabbage, lots of sauce and green onion; miso soup, could have been hotter but fine; and last a large seaweed salad which was good for 3. Chef gave us three slices of flame broiled tuna on rice. Entrees were some ala carte sushi, a salmon teriyaki and a chicken teriyaki. Both used the same teriyaki sauce as yakitori which was was disappointing. Chicken even slice for yakitori. Both on bed of veg and a side of regular rice with some sesame seeds, not sushi rice. Salmon was good and plenty of veg. Lots of chicken, but again disappointed that yakitori and teriyaki had same sauce. Staff were attentive. Ordered hot tea which was good. Restaurant was good, not exceptional, have had better.

Going to get sushi with your girlfriends means you get to order a boat! The fish was very fresh and everything was delicious. The only problem we had was that the food took a very long time to come out. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went, but it took almost an hour to receive our food. Other than the wait, the food itself was pretty good and the restaurant was pretty clean. Their green tea was nice and strong and complemented the food. My favorite was probably the seared fatty salmon!

Do you have a private party room?

Hi, we don't have private party rooms, but we can reserve the entire bar side, or entire restaurant for private parties.

Can you accommodate a sesame seed allergy?

    Is there outdoor seating?

    Yes

Any chance of low carb sushi options?

You can get sushi rolls riceless, or cucumber wrapped. You could also do sashimi which is slices of fish only.

The pork broth is standout, but I absolutely dream about the spider ramen. Named for the fried softshell on the top (which you can ask to swap for more shrimp), has a tom yum-like flavor. Creamy, spicy and slightly acidic, the broth could be poured on cardboard and I would eat it. Noodles are always perfect and the seafood is present, but not a huge portion - so you can focus on the broth. My only complaint? The lobster broth in the spider ramen dish is not listed as an option for the "make your own" bowl...which would allow me to perfectly customize it. I will regularly order the spider bowl in the meantime with no softshell, extra shrimp, and if I'm feeling down additional noodles and broth (allowing me to indulge for multiple meals) . Bubble tea is tasty - especially the rose milk tea. This place has a counter with a handful of seats and two tables for 4-6. After waiting for a table, we decided to mostly do takeout. We can order online. Would be great if they had a spot out front for takeout pickup as parking around the restaurant can be hard at times.

I admit, I pulled into the first plaza I saw that was easy to get in to find something, and wound up at Akira. I've had their ramen before at other locations, but this was my first time at this one. The place had a little bit of a crowd in it, but I was quickly seated. The Rockville location here is perhaps not the most beautifully decorated, with some rather odd ornamentation (like an actual, possibly functional, payphone? ), but it's still a nicer spot than a typical lunch counter. Okay, confession. I have no idea what the different ramens are. I always just kind of pick one randomly, and I've never met a ramen I didn't like. This time, I got the tantanmem. Of course, picking randomly, I picked one that used ivory soap as a topping -- or as you fancy people call it, "cilantro." Realising my error, I quickly caught the waitress and asked for it to be omitted. Akira actually skipped it! YAY! Thank you.
