Sala Thai is a large restaurant that has pleasant decor and great window views. I couldn't give it higher because when I unrolled my utensils the fork was dirty and had food clinging to it! Tiny little wing insects were also flying around. The waitress brought me another after I showed her and came back with disposable chopsticks which I used instead of the utensils. I had the pad thai noodles. It had some fresh bean sprouts and crushed peanuts. I had mine with shrimp. There were seven large shrimp but it was an overcooked and chewy tough. I thought the sauce was tasty with some tamarind elements but needed just a tad more acid. Having the lime slice did help. There is a full bar and television. I see a lot of people ordering for pickup and even buying just a drink to go. The mocktail drinks on the little table advertisement looked very appealing but I skipped it for some water. I really didn't need more calories. Happy Hour appetizers were available for purchase on Sunday said my waitress. I passed because I had enough food. The fried egg roll appitizer and the lychee drink were SPECTACULAR. the crab rangoon was also pretty good. the entrees we got were not as enjoyable unfortunately. they werent bad just not as good as the apps. the dessert i got was a boba taro thing and i was really not a fan of the texture or taste. i think the prices are fair and the servers were very very kind though! i would only come back again for the apps and the drinks. read more

I absolutely love this place. You cannot go wrong with their menu. I've tried many different plates so far and I've enjoyed almost all of them. The noodles I decided to go with the seafood option and it did not disappoint. I did ask them to make it slightly spicier and I loved it. The red curry duck was also ordered and it was so well done. Just be carful as we did come across some bones. The calamari is my fav well battered and fried. The wontons I wasn't a fan of it, it was something new we tried. I felt like it lacked flavor honestly. The drinks was amazing. Couldn't get enough of it. The lychee which seemed was paired with 7up was such a great balance. The Thai tee was also well made. Mango sticky rice is my favorite dessert and it did not disappoint at all. Between the sweet coconut rice and the mango perfect balance. The coconut ice dram wasn't at all a favorite. However my kids enjoyed it very much and that is all that matters. Our waitress was amazing, very attentive. Ignore all these nasty reviews - I almost didn't come because of them and then I come in with friend, got amazing service, food came out so quickly, and tasted amazing. I have been going to Sala Thai for years. The space was recently renovated and looks nice. Their service and food is always good and I will continue to patronize this restaurant. The food here was ok. I liked the dumplings. The red curry with pork wasn't great. The curry itself had a nice flavor but the pork wasn't good quality since it was hard and chewy throughout. If you have the choice of a protein I would recommend either going with the beef or chicken. It wasn't the best Thai food I've had but it's one of the few Thai options in Bethesda. Upon entering the front door, the staff was ready to greet us - all three of them in the front were gracious. This is a review for takeout, we did not dine in, and so I can't really speak much for the service or the ambience. The food however was pretty delicious. We got the Pad Thai, Pad See Ew and the Panang Curry. Overall the food was delicious. My only complaint is they give you a very small rice side for all that curry, and it honestly isn't enough given how much curry sauce comes with it. I loved that the food wasn't overly salty, I've been other places where the Pad See Ew sauce was so salty that I could barely eat the dish, but that wasn't the case here! A lovely little spot. Not fancy, just comfortable with a nice bar set up. We sat in a booth by the window on a very nice day. We each had a lunch special. Pork and small bits of fried chicken with white rice. Chicken dish had a veggie lime sauce. I tasted the pork too. Delicious. For apps we shared spring roles and chicken satay. Each had a special sauce that made the dishes all the more tasty. We each had tea. We loved the big mugs and choice of tea. We had jasmine and oolong. Each came with a small container of honey. Very nice touch. Attentive server. Lunch specials are reasonably priced at around $12.00. Finally, they feature a jazz trio on the first Friday of the month. I recommend this place. I ordered for delivery kaprow chicken and salathal wonton soup. The soup was wonderful. A light chicken broth with spring onions, bok Choy and very dense chicken wontons. I thought the flavors, textures, wontons and spices were a perfect combination. Truly a five rating for this soup. The Kaprow chicken would have been a five rating if not, for the fact that the chicken was overcooked and tough. On the positive side, the sauce was outstanding. I asked for a higher spice level, but still found not very much heat. The basil was wonderful, red peppers were sautéed extremely well, and the beans were crisp and tasty. An OK Thai restaurant. Have had better. There were a lot of flavor and seasoning missing from the entrees. We ordered Tom Yum Soup, Kana Peas, Papaya Salad, Chicken Larb Gai, Broccoli and Chicken in garlic sauce, Drunken Noodles, Veggie and Tofu dish, and Tilapia fried fish. The spice level was just OK. The Broccoli and chicken dish was missing chili since the garlic sauce was too bland. The Tom Yum Soup had a weird flavor and missing a seasoning as well. Papaya Salad wasn't as spicy as we expected and a little sour. The veggie dish didn't come with grilled chicken like we had asked, so we had to order a side of chicken skewers. My wife and I ate lunch at Sala Thai with friends. We would go again. One friend is vegan. That is fine. It means, however, we have to study menus to determine what would work for everyone in the party. She then orders her own dish. My wife and I shared the crab fried rice and the pumpkin and tofu. The crab fried rice had sufficient crab. Some places, they have only a hint. The pumpkin and tofu came with penang curry, the sweeter orange stuff. Pumpkin is not the best word; it is kabocha squash, not what in America is served in the autumn with spice. We had enough for leftovers. We were given a bite of the dessert, the fried banana with ice cream, with the fruit in an eggroll casing, essentially a sundae. I also had Thai ice tea. The flavors are as expected. My sense, from a visit to Bangkok where my brother was posted two decades ago, is that the American versions of dishes are all sweeter, verging on cloying. That is not different from other cuisines. Chinese American and Italian American, for example, are distinct from their sources, interpretations based on available ingredients and the majority palate, which then became established and set expectations; you would be surprised by the "authentic," and with Thai in particular the spiciness would not be tolerated. The service was brisk. They presented the bill with an unusual feature that should be a common one. They had added the gratuity, which they noted; that is fine. But they also had done the math: they showed the per person cost, if divided evenly. Something interesting about utensils. In the States, Thai restaurants provide chopsticks. The are catering to their clientele, who assume that Asian eateries rely on chopsticks. But if you research it, that is not the case. The Thai will use chopsticks, in particular if consuming Chinese food or due to the influence of Chinese immigrants, and if the remainder of the meal is Thai for the Chinese noodles if that is served, or upon request. But chopsticks are not normal. So that is an interesting example of cultural passing or masquerade. "Pad thai," which is associated with the nation, is an invention. That does not mean it is not truly Thai (although tartans for clans were a marketing gimmick, they are Scottish; they're merely modern). Pad thai was created within the twentieth century as a project in consolidating identity. Some claim it came from Chinese influence. Or, as with origin stories, it might be both, ironically an effort to strengthen ethnic unity (Thai) by borrowing from an immigrant community (Chinese). read more

The Pad King was the best of the bunch but had overcooked vegetables and did not come with rice. The Khao Soi was flavorless except for spice and had noodles that seemed more Italian and Asian. The Pad See Ew had incredibly gummy noodles that our toddler choked on (this is his go-to favorite dish usually) and the shrimp in it tasted off, a little dirty and flavorless.
