Some of the better Chinese food around South Rockville / Kensington. A little pricey but worth it

Representing 2020 as a runner-up to an out of town original pick representing the DMV, R is for Red Ginger. I visited on Sunday, July 26, 2020. Three days earlier I broke up with my girlfriend, which break-ups are always upsetting at least to a certain extent. Chinese is good comfort food, and Red Ginger did not disappoint. It's a hole-in-the-wall place. Staff was efficient, and I ended up eating with AC blasting on that hot day in my car like an animal as it was Covid times and wasn't heading back home, which was close in Wheaton at the time. read more

The pork fried rice and the beef lo mein were the best I've had in a long time. It was ready right on time for me to take out and parking wasn't bad at all for a Friday afternoon but it is a busy intersection so a back up route wouldn't hurt. I ordered online and although the order was correct and on time, the staff informed me that ordering by phone would be more favorable for putting orders together. It's a reasonable request so I'll order by phone in the future....soon! read more

Accepts both cash and credit card. Free parking. This place has limited free parking, but you can easily park a block away and walk over. The restaurant appears clean and the staff are nice. We came here a few times and their food is decent. A bit on the pricier side. Their white meat chicken is a bit dry, but their sauce is decent. Their Singapore noodles are really good. Their fried chicken wings is a bit on the salty side, but decent sized chicken. If you are in the mood for carry out food, this place is decent. Worth giving his place a try if you are hungry. Tough to find this spot since it's clustered around many other auto shops. read more

I've passed right by this place over 100 times on the way to Kensington. Each time I wondered: any good? Sketchy strip of auto repair shops, limited parking, looks a bit run down. Tonight I tried it for takeout. Pretty good! I ordered vegetable egg foo young (old school!) and schezwan green beans. Both quite good. Hot, packaged well, pretty fast while I waited. Tasty, so much so that I can imagine craving it. Service is basic and efficient, not particularly warm. Nice that it's open late (10 pm) when the rest of Kensington is closed. Decor is basic, run down but clean, dated. Could easily be the 1940's. Location and parking sketchy but no issues. I can easily see returning for takeout, especially if I order online and pick up briefly. Overall: 4 food, 3 atmosphere and service, 2 location. I'm rounding up my 3.5 score to 4. read more

We ordered delivery from Red Ginger (through Grubhub), and we could not have been happier with our finished result. Our order consisted of Chicken Pad Thai, Hawaiian Rice, a noodle dish (whose name escapes me), dumplings, and crab rangoon. Overall, everything was great. First, the portion sizes are HUGE -- a great bang for your buck. Honestly, each entree dish (especially the Pad Thai) had enough food for three entrees. I'll probably have enough food for the next day's lunch and dinner. Red Ginger has a very extensive menu, so I'm sure that there will be a little of something for everyone. I'm not sure if this was because of Red Ginger, Grubhub's delivery person, or the combination of the two, but our food arrived very fast and piping hot. For what we ordered, I thought the quality of the food was pretty decent (especially for a near late-night delivery), and there were no complaints about the food. Based on the quantity of food that we received, I will say that the prices (around $15 for most entrees) are pretty reasonable. Red Ginger will definitely go on the list for my go-to delivery spots. read more

The name & some of the higher marked reviews led me to bookmark Red Ginger awhile back. I removed the bookmark shortly after my visit. Everything about my first & last time here was off, with the exception of my lunch companion who made the outing a positive one. Food is extremely bland & unsavorily thrown together, the employee provided incorrect information about some of the ingredients & who wants to be served on styrofoam plates & plastic utensils...we did not order our meal To-Go. Our Order: *Pan Fried Dumplings - Made with Egg after being ensured ingredients were just veggies & cabbage. *Vegetable Spring Rolls - the only item I consumed & half way enjoyed. *Crispy Eggplant - The worse version I've tried. *Vegetarian General Tso - The Tofu was wet & runny, even with a hard yes of "I will make it extra crispy for you". I usually have good luck with hole in the walls & Storefront Asian food places, yet did not with this one & that's an understatement. Not worth the $28 (minus the Dumplings Credit) or time to return. read more

Needing plenty of food for the impending snowstorm, I stopped here hoping for something filling and nutritionally diverse. This is a takeout place; there is seating but there isn't much to it. They gave me a ten-minute estimate, and my food was indeed ready that quickly. I wasn't entirely clear on what "Mongolian" tofu would be, but it turned out to be a fairly basic brown sauce with onion stir fry kind of a thing. Likewise, the Szechuan string beans I ordered were in a simple chili garlic sauce, though I must say the portion was plentiful. The dumplings I ordered had a nice variety of ingredients, including ample greens of some sort. None of the flavors excited overly. It was basic and one-note, but it was all solid and satisfying. Given the quality of Chinese takeout inside the District line (not good, as my old reviews will indicate), there's definitely something to be said for this place here that is convenient and thoroughly decent. Can't endorse it as a destination restaurant though; there's better out there. read more

For NYE we ordered from Red Ginger. We've never had it before and decided to try a new Chinese food restaurant. We called to order and went to pick it up directly (took 30 minutes between call and picking up). With new Chinese restaurants, I'm not usually sure how the food will taste and keep to lower expectations. BUT, I was very surprised with how great the food was!! Everything had a generous portion. Chicken Fried Rice: tons of chicken and veggies. Perfect fried rice. Singapore Rice Noodles: MY FAVORITE DISH!!! these were very thin and light but also had a slight kick to it. Would definitely order again. Shrimp Lo Mein: excellent portion size and very tasty. Pork Dumplings: ORDER THESE! The dumplings had a huge amount of pork, the size of a meatball. What's going on with the Singapore noodles? For years, this has been my go to dish at Red Ginger but lately they have been lacking. In the past they were seasoned very well and I never had to add any additional seasonings. The past few times they have been very bland. I have had to add hot mustard and soy sauce to try to make them edible. I guess it's time to find another place for my Singapore noodles. read more

Reliable, Tasty and Quick Eats. Parking is very limited, but they are super reliable to have your food ready in a super timely manner. If you want your stuff crisper, just ask, they are very accommodating and understanding. They pump out a lot of meals, but don't complain if it's not exactly the same as another spot you've been to, especially if you don't ask for specific request. The quantities were huge and the prices low, but it was all kind of disappointing. The biggest disappointment was the fried eggplant, which was comically over breaded and barely edible. It was all kind of bland and overly salty. I got general Tso's tofu and the texture wasn't very good. Won't be going again. read more

I stopped by after work yesterday as I have been eyeing it for at least a year. I was pleasantly impressed with the cleanliness and decor of this establishment. The young lady who assisted me and took my order was very nice and took my order right away. I ordered small as I had never eaten there and got the combination fried rice, triple delight and egg drop soup. The food was well prepared and not swimming in sauce, which is a plus as the veggies are nice and crisp. I am a spice lover so it could have been spicier but i fixed that at home. read more

This was my first visit to Red Ginger. I am fairly new to Md and wanted some Lo Mein. As of now I had only had Lo Mein from Wheaton mall. My expectations were for it to be the same or hopefully even better. First, I ordered shrimp tempura. There was way too much breading and the shrimp was tasteless. I tried it with sauce and it was still too dry. Next, I tried egg rolls. The egg rolls were peppery or had a hot type of taste. I have never had a spicy egg roll. This went straight in the garbage with the tempura. I had hope for my main course of Shrimp Lo Mein. The shrimp although abundant was burned. The noodles were cooked well but the taste was very overpowering. I spent 25.00 for my entire meal to go in the garbage. I suggest if you give it a try order one item and not waste the money until you decide if you like it. There are many good reviews and I hope this means it was an off day. I will be eating my Lo Mein from the food court till I find somewhere else. read more

I don't see many Asian restaurants getting more than 2 stars very often so when I see 4, I have to try it. Unfortunately, I should've stayed away. I honestly don't see what the hype is all about. My brother and I got the lunch special chicken lo mein, shrimp wonton, special egg roll and spring rolls (which I didn't order, but for some reason was included?) The chicken lo mein was awful. It tasted burnt and had a strong teriyaki flavor. I hated the egg roll, apparently it was supposed to be beef and shrimp but there was nothing in it except cabbage and a crazy amount of black pepper which was so nasty. The spring rolls were okay, nothing special about them. I liked the shrimp wontons (hence the 2 stars) but it was so hard to actually eat it because of the way it's made (see picture) I had to throw out most of the wonton just to get to the shrimp. Overall, just a horrible experience & a complete waste of money. read more

They claim they can't see any of the delivery instructions you give them in DoorDash. This is the 3rd time I have tried and this time I put a sign on the front door that says "Please DO NOT KNOCK and DO NOT TOUCH SCREEN DOOR." As usual, they banged on the door SO loudly, the dog howled, the baby woke up, and stuff got real. I will never order from them again. read more

I had the general tsos' chicken. Very juicy chicken, sauce is flavorful and complex, with a hit of heat (could be more if you're into spicy, but if you like things mild this is perfect). This will be a new regular spot for me! read more

Food was fast and tasted delicious! Had a carry out order of beef and broccoli, beef chow fun, and chicken fried rice.

I was upset that what I thought was a Chinese take out staple, orange chicken, was done so poorly. The orange chicken tasted like bitter orange rind, it was inedible. No one who I asked to tried it could eat it. However the beef lo mein was so tasty! The beef was cooked so nicely and the noodles were soft and delicious. Egg rolls tasted old and were eaten out of hunger not taste. Sadly the orange chicken left such a bad taste in our mouths that I won't be ordering again from this establishment. read more

Whenever a place identifies itself as serving "Asian cuisine," this does not necessarily spell disaster; but, the chances of a successful showing is usually fairly remote. In fact, my visit to Red Ginger confirmed as much. Interestingly (and, promisingly, from my perspective), the woman at the counter was rather pleasant and conversed in Cantonese; so, I did not feel completely apprehensive when I ordered the beef chow fun (or, beef chow "foon" as Red Ginger calls it--using a more Taishanese pronunciation). While the quality of this standard dish of stir fried rice noodles can be quite variable at takeout joints (with the occasional revelation), I hoped that Red Ginger, indeed, would be a rare find (perhaps, a hidden gem of Cantonese comfort food at rock bottom prices). However, the beef chow "foon" was dismal. First off, the chef did not even use chow fun noodles (i.e., the flat rice noodle sheets that are cut into squares or strips and that are universally featured in this dish). Rather, he used pad thai noodles and stir fried them with the requisite bean sprouts, onions, and scallions (to approximate what beef chow fun would normally be). The resulting hybrid concoction (which featured a miniscule amount of over-tenderized mushy beef to add insult to injury) could easily have been called, "beef pad fun" or "beef chow pad." Yikes! I'm all for authenticity taking a back seat to taste; but, as a Cantonese person, I am just a bit sensitive to beef chow fun being violated in this way. Although I wished that I had found a hidden gem for Cantonese comfort food (and, Red Ginger had signs of that potential given its secretive location in an industrial setting), I cannot, obviously, report that I have. Of course, my review is based on one dish (and, with arguably a "niche" perspective that did not account for the rest of Red Ginger's menu). I realize that. Upon skimming their menu, I can see a range of offerings. Maybe, it makes a Penang Curry, Malaysian Fried Rice, and Tokyo Chicken (whatever that is) that are to die for (for a clientele that can readily appreciate those items). I don't know. However, for what it's worth, let me say, "No, thank you" and move on. read more
