I'm not a big fan. A group ordered takeout and someone went to pick it up because we were very nearby. I found everything on the bland side. We started with wonton soup, which everyone else liked, but I thought needed salt. On the plus side, there were four wontons per person. People liked the egg rolls. I can't comment personally because I didn't order one. We also had the steamed pork dumplings. The filling was tasty, especially when soaked in the sauce. The noodle outer layer was on the gummy/gooey side as far as I was concerned, and my friends agreed. Our three entrees were a shrimp sesame dish, which the other two who had it enjoyed, but I found it over-bready and soggy. The chicken cashew had minimal flavor and a ton of vegetables (like corn and celery) that I'm not accustomed to in that dish. I purchased an eggroll with my meal and when I bit into it, a ton of grease came oozing out and left a terrible lingering taste in my mouth. To say this is one of the worst general tsos chicken I ever had would be an understatement. This tiny little place seems like a relic of an age before Bethesda had skyscrapers, and has been there in its current form for as long as I can remember (close to three decades) and who knows how much longer. It is strictly a takeout place. When I ordered online from their website, I did not get a confirmation email, which worried me a bit, but they had my food hot and ready to go when I arrived (and the email showed up afterwards for some reason). They have an ample vegetarian menu, and those dishes come by default with brown rice for some reason, which is fine by me. The curry tofu that I asked for spicy was a nice portion; I'm glad I didn't get any more sides because it was plenty for lunch. And it had an occasional burn, was tasty, and had just enough vegetables. Nothing fancy, but I have no complaints. It is one of the closest places to NIH and the military medical center, and I assume it's been here forever because they are capable of reliably producing decent, cheap, quick food for anyone in need of a takeout lunch. read more

They have their own parking lot with 5 spots or so, in addition to side-street metered parking. Service is quick. I called in an order around 5:30pm, drove about 3 minutes to pick it up, and was told my food was ready as I walked in. Talk about *fast* food! The Beef Lo Mein (pint sized) is plentiful and sauced well, while the Bean Curd Szechuan Style (also pint sized) was actually spicy. This restaurant became my go-to place when I was staying at the Navy Lodge. Their food isn't super authentic, but close enough to give you the comfort of Chinese food. Their service was always friendly. I find that their dishes tend to be good for two meals, so I would usually order one dish (which comes with rice) + another side of rice. Great lunch special! $6 and some change and you get a huge meal. Today, I deviated from packing a healthy lunch and decided to treat myself before a brutal work week. I got the General Tso's chicken and it came with a generous portion of rice and an eggroll. The chicken consisted of moist white meat and was not too heavy on the sauce or breading. After spending all day moving boxes and putting together furniture, my mom and I were craving some Chinese food. Golden House is close to my apartment. They deliver, but I decided to run over instead. The storefront is more of a stand with walls and doors and a handful of chairs for seating. They took about 5 minutes longer than they told me on the phone, but it wasn't a huge deal. The staff seemed to be working efficiently. We ordered an egg roll ($1.15), crab rangoons ($3.95), pork fried rice ($5.45 for a pint, $8.75 for a quart), and kung pao shrimp ($6.65 for a pint, $10.65 for a quart). Everything was good enough to cure our Chinese food craving. The egg roll was decent (filling wasn't very exciting), but they served us sweet and sour sauce with the egg roll- hopefully that was a mistake! The pork fried rice and kung pao shrimp were also pretty good, but again, not the best I've ever had. The crab rangoons were really good and probably the highlight of the meal for me. Next time I am craving Chinese food and want take-out from somewhere near my house, I'll be ordering from Golden House. Was it the best Chinese I've ever had? In addition, the noodles were a bit soggy... they taste better after they were refrigerated so as to harden them a bit. I usually love love mein, but for theirs to taste good, I had to add in extra soy sauce, A LOT of it. I will give this place another chance. I think everybody can agree that some days you just crave cheap, greasy chinese food. I'm not a picky eater, and when going to a chinese takeout joint my expectations aren't super high. I'm new to the area and have found food great food places around downtown while exploring. This was my first time getting chinese takeout here and I was pretty disappointed all around. Back home all the local takeout spots tasted better, cost less, and had bigger portions. I was looking to spend maybe about 7 or 8 bucks for a quick fix. However I ended up spending $12 on a "large" beef with garlic hoping to eat half for dinner and save the rest for tomorrow's breakfast. I actually ended up finishing the whole thing in a sitting and it wasn't really filling at all. It just made me think they might given me a small by accident. Onto the actual dish, it actually looked pretty good and had a wide variety of vegetables. However the taste was very bland and unless you took a big spoon of the actual sauce from the plate there wasn't much to it. Should mention that the sauce tasted more like packaged duck sauce than anything else, definitely not garlic. I guess thats all you can really expect from a dish prepared in roughly 5 minutes. Golden House is an excellent Chinese delivery service and take-out restaurant. It is also great for lunch as their menu includes egg rolls, unlike the Bethesda competition for a lower price. In their delivery, they always arrive very quickly and the food is consistent. They also always bring napkins. :) There is always plenty of parking right off of Rockville Pike. I like the house look of the restaurant, but it is too bad there is no dining area. A table or so would work pretty well in there. The restaurant is actually green, but I suppose calling it, "Green House" just wouldn't have that special ring to it. It gives the customer a feel of get-in, get-out. I think the cashiers could be a little more engaging, but I think that's industry standard for Chinese restaurants to prioritize an effective product and timely service. In so doing, they more often seem to minimize the customer interaction. I always feel rushed, for example, when ordering. This is different, for instance, than a Thai restaurant, so perhaps it is cultural rather than just being a language barrier. read more

I used to go to the Golden House at least once a month for about 6 years. I now live in Laurel and thought it would be a nice treat. I ordered 3 large soups, brown rice, pork fried rice, and lemon chicken. Before I left I asked if they gave me 6 packs of fried noodles for my soups. I always got 1 each for the pints and i needed 2 for the quarts. They said i have 3 and could buy more, $.50 each. I said no and was really flabbergasted. I just felt like I was discounted as a client, nickeled and dimed, and unappreciated. So I guess I'll be sharing our pack of fried noodles... and never returning. I waited literally about 4 minutes until my food came out after I ordered it. Pretty good, I'd say. The lunch special was fairly cheap and the amount of the food was decent but that's usually how take out Chinese foods are. I ordered the General Tso's chicken with rice and it came with an eggroll, which is always nice. The food itself was not too bad but greasy- as we could've guessed, it's Chinese food. I can't give more than 3 stars because this place is literally "A-OK" as it's like all other Chinese take out places. Not saying they are bad but there's nothing special about this place that would make me recommend to other people. I order online from here pretty frequently. It is exactly what you expect from made to order Chinese food. Some dishes are authentic and some are not, I order based on what I am feeling that day. Deliveries are consistent; they always come within 40-60mins. I will continue to order from them. We chose this restaurant on the way back to our hotel after a night out, as it's within walking distance. This place is a chinese take out that has a vast menu and bottled and canned drinks available. I ordered the small hot and sour soup and shrimp fried rice. My husband ordered the combination lo main (roasted pork, beef, shrimp). The food is not bad, but did lack some flavor. What I didn't like about the fried rice was that it had A LOT of chunky white onions. The service was quick and the staff was very friendly.
