My post will be based on two large takeout experiences at Hearty's. The first batch, my friends and I ordered the lamb pot special. The second time, we ordered three regular dishes, a large soup (for eight people), and their special whole duck that is stuffed with rice and seasoning. Here are my ratings: Special stuffed duck $68 (5/5): this dish was simply incredible. It's a mouthwatering whole duck, with succulent skin. The fat beneath the skin is NOT rendered however the fat tastes great! The texture alone is not for the faint of heart! The stuffings are rice and seasonings. Every bite is a combination of juicy duck meat, fatty skin and fat itself, puffy rice, and great seasoning. For $68, this dish is so worth the price!!! Lamb pot special $50 (3/5): the portion was amazing. The taste, on the other hand, is just okay. There were plenty of lamb pieces and lots of vegetables. We just dumped the whole dish into a big pot and dumped the accompanying sauces and soups in the pot as well. After about 15 minutes, the pot was boiling and we served. I like the concept where the customer cooks the uncooked ingredients for a cheaper price ($50 for that much food is a bargain). Unfortunately, the taste was only so-so. Beef chow fun and the two other pork and chicken with Chinese bacon dish (picture 4) (4/5): the beef chow fun was amazing. The dish had the correct amount of seasoning and the beef was tender and not oily. The chicken/Chinese bacon腊肉 and pork dish were so-so. Overall, the restaurant provides great portion sizes (even greater portions when you take out their uncooked dishes and you have to cook them yourself). Some dishes were definitely mega hits! I have ordered from Hearty's a few times before and they never failed me. Always got my order correct and their food is ALWAYS good. This is the place to go. I usually order my usual from them which is the Orange chicken and General Tso's chicken, but this time I order their curry beef, general tso's chicken, and beef and cheese, and crab wontons. Pretty good Chinese food and reasonable prices for the area. I was working in the Gaithersburg area and had a taste for some hot and sour soup. Of course Yelp brought me here (I also verified on Google too..shh don't tell anyone) I've come here three times for food and it has been good, I just can't give it a 5. My soups have always been hot, and the entrees have been decent and the lady who takes your order is very polite and sweet. Good service goes a long way in my book! I've ordered different items and their lunch specials are legit!! You get an entree, soup or egg roll, and a choice of white or fried rice all for under $9!! You can't beat that! So, the basic for take out orders is the plastic containers must fit, primarily the lid for your entree. But it didn't and that should have been clear to the person packing the food to go for our pick up. We ordered chicken and vegetables and a shrimp dish. The food was normal. It would have warranted a 2.5. When we travelled home only a few miles away with no tussling of the food by any standard, it had basically spilled within the bag. It ruined about one third of my dish, both had already leaked the sauce since it was not a good seal. Honestly tempted to rate it a one. Everyone knows you cannot give a customer leaky dishes to go. Sad to say I think this will be my last order. Sauces were watered down, Beef lo mein should be Lo mein- beef as there was less beef and it tasted "smokey" to me. Same with Moo Shu Chicken. As far as westernized Chinese restaurants go, this one is actually not super westernized. I ordered a chicken with garlic sauce and it was prepared with thinly sliced bamboo shoots and mushrooms, which is much more of an authentic Chinese manner than I'm used to at the typical Chinese takeout restaurant. The flavor was good, but I felt like there were a lot of vegetables and not a lot of chicken, which was disappointing, considering that I also felt like the portion was a bit small for the price. I also tried the crab rangoons and they were good as well, but again, not exactly a hefty portion for the price paid. Service was super friendly, though. read more

I was worried bc I ordered about 45 min before they were set to close (I'm so sorry!). I'm on a work trip and was looking for some good sesame chicken, and the reviews here were good. I went inside about 20 minutes after placing my order, but like 30 minutes before the app said it'd be ready. The last thing I'd want is people staying late to cook my food or something. Their website claims they are open until 10 pm on Sundays, but they apparently close at 9 pm. Their online ordering service took orders on Sunday evening after 9 pm (we thought they were open until 10 pm) and when I showed up at 9:30, they were closed. It took them until Tuesday to contact me (I called on Monday and asked for a manager to call me back), and they wanted me to drive back to the restaurant to pick up a cash reimbursement for my credit card payment.... um.... excuse me? When I walked in, this place was completely empty. It made me kind of skeptical of the food or service but for those of you reading this HAVE NO FEAR!! THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! Very authentic Chinese cuisine and all of it tasted great. I want to come here again to give my friends and family great Chinese food. I really wanted some Chinese spare ribs so I decided to try this place. Unfortunately I still want some bbq spare ribs. They were overcooked and had no sauce on them. The egg foo young was mostly just egg and shrimp. It was very eggy and the gravy was very thin. The tempura shrimp were just batter fried shrimp, not tempura. They are more of an American restaurant that serves some Chinese food. I wouldn't recommend going here. read more

It doesn't look like much when you walk by, you would think it's just another American-Chinese restaurant. That's so not true. The food they serve is so authentic (Taiwanese). My daughter loves their Oyster and pork intestine vermicelli. You have to try their duck, it is so juicy and so tender. It's one of my husband's favorite dishes. The owner, chefs, and everyone in the restaurant are so lovely. They knew I needed to drive a long way home, so they packed my food with extra care to ensure it was just as delicious when I got home. They even taught me how to heat my duck. They are just amazing. They genuinely care about their customers. We take out from the restaurant for many years. It has undergone modifications over the years. Huge seating places inside. But hardly few people eat in there. Mostly, take out. I haven't found anything negative. Food quality is generally good, although, we are not picky. Portion sizes are healthy. Mongolian Pork got high marks. But we frequently order different items - Broccoli Chicken, Black Bean Sauce items, seafood items. They are all good. There are some dishes very bland, if you like that way. I only learned about this restaurent after tasted a couple of dishes at a friend's house last Thanksgiving. Not sure how many times I've ordered from them since then. I've ordered for family and friends get togethers, potlucks, even for Xmas.... This place offers some night market taste dishes that I missed so much. Not only they have great selections, bigger portion, they are authentic and make you wanna go back to try different dishes. Give it a try, you will love it. The food is mediocre at best. Yesterday we ordered for lunch. My sister mistakenly gave the driver a $50 bill thinking it was a $5 bill (the meal cost $18). Yes this was my sister's error but when confronted, the restaurant did not do the right thing and return the money to my sister who is a 18yo college student who doesn't have much money as it is. Holy shit! When I picked up my order I was so surprised at the heaviness of the paper bag! The dinner portion is huge! Amazing. The most disgusting thing was I had already had bite when I realized. I feel so disgusted and sick to my stomach. The manager had the nerve to say it's probably the broccoli. This is my new go-to chinese food for the gaithersburg area! Everything I've tried from here has been delicious, and delivery has always been timely. I've never eaten in the restaurant, but always ordered delivery and never had any issues with mixups or quality. If first impressions are any indication, Hearty's would not fare well. Upon getting into the car, I reached into the bag for the crunchy noodles that come with soup. These were so hard and stale they were inedible. When I got home and opened the bag, at least 3 of the containers were partially open, leaking all over, and the lo mein was packed in the bag on its side. Uh, oh, I thought. I hope this doesn't indicate a lack of care in the food prep. Well, the food itself was mixed. The hot and sour soup was tasty and so was the shredded beef with peppers. But the shrimp in the garlic shrimp was really mealy (and scarce) and the dough for the steamed dumplings was a little too thick. Flavors were okay, but I doubt I will return. read more

This is not your typical Chinese carryout restaurants at all! It's way superior and I would say it's almost like the Chinese version of True Food Kitchen! The new owner, new chef and the team have been working hard to serve up delicious, healthy and authentic Chinese/Taiwanese dishes with high quality ingredients. For example, they make their own pickled vegetables that go into many dishes using all-natural ingredients, instead of buying them from the Asian market as those are loaded with chemical preservatives. If the team can not find quality ingredients for certain dish (say, bitter melon in plum sauce), they will take the dish off the menu until they found quality ingredients. All the dishes we have ordered are made with such care and skill that they not only taste great, but make you feel so well. The typical American-Chinese dishes are all decent, but I highly recommend talking to the manager about their weekly specials as those are what the Chef figured to be the best with the best ingredients available. Also they can adjust to just about any dietary needs: non-spicy, low sodium, low fat, or low sugar. So glad to know about this place! read more

I had a very bad experience with this place recently. First, I will admit it was my fault for sending them to the wrong address. When the delivery man called to say he was at the apartment I realized my mistake. I asked if he could drive 1 mile down the road to the new address and he groaned, an acceptable response, so I suggested leaving the food at that door and I'll pick it up. He did not like that either so I started giving him my new address. The communication was difficult so I suggested texting him the address. I hung up and texted the new address. 20 - 30 mins later I tried to call him and no answer. Then the restaurant called me and told me to call Devlivery.com to get a refund. Long story short, Heary's did not release my money and did not give me my food. So essentially stealing about $45 for my meal and 15% tip for undelivered food. I could have walked to pick up my food if he felt the 1 mile was too far, but no, he decided to take the food and take my money. read more

The fried wontons were chewy. Not very much flavor in the drunken noodles.

This restaurant has a very nice casher, and sometime the boss is there and she is super funny. If you talk to her more, you may get a free chicken wing. Highly recommend fried chicken, it is fantastic. read more
