Very bland and greasy food, rather disappointing dinner! But portions were decent but even the dumplings were I overcooked.

Empty restaurant, no one greeted me even though the door chimes. Then a customer comes in cuts me off and they rearrange the whole seating area for her. The lady was in the process of wheeling out the to go orders but pushes it back to kitchen to rearrange the place for the lady she knows. Literally rearranged. After over 10 minutes, she finally gets my order. No sorry just what's your phone number. I can forgive all that but the food was not worth it in my opinion. I get home and the food is so bland and barely room temperature. I hate wasting money, not one item was worth it. The General Tsos had zero flavor and I honestly thought it wasn't fresh. The dumpling meat was spongy. The Lo Mein was bland and the noodles reminded me of regular spaghetti. No sauces... thank goodness I have soy sauce as a staple. Came here for the beef egg sauce over rice and it was the worse I have had in the dmv area. The beef was super tough and chewy and felt like it was either overcooked or old. Sauce was very runny and bland. Portions were smaller and the price was $15! They do do cash discounts, so ask for that. Service was kurt and didn't give you or ask for utensils with ur takeout. The restaurant is located on a side street- off the beaten path. We ordered takeout however a small dine-in area is available with basic offerings/simple decor. The lady who took our order was nice and friendly. We ordered the deep fried prawn with salted egg yolk. The shrimp was plump and delicious! I didn't know this place existed before this week. It took me a bit of circling around at the Kentlands to locate it. It's on one of the side streets from Main. So it's not really visible from the main street and the signage is barely high enough over any parked SUVS. Color of the signage also blends with the brick color of the building. I stopped by because I had heard that the chef that used to run the Hong Kong BBQ food stall at New York Mart is now one of chefs at Ming's. I've been craving his roast pork so had to go and get some! Still has that hoisan flavor I've been craving. Also got a whole roast duck and it was tasty. Skin was crispy and lots of the fat was rendered. There's a small window that has the roast meats hanging. So you can see/select what you want! It's got a handful of tables for indoor dining. They did have a couple tables outside. Not sure I'd dine in but at least it's got a few parking spaces out front for takeout pickup! Will be going again. Going Chef Mah stays for awhile and will offer roast pig on the weekends! Haven't tried anything else, but heard from others that the menu has changed a bit. Worst place ever food was bad, service even worse. We all had a bad stomach ache and headache after due to the saltiness of the food.

We are always on the lookout for good Chinese takeout/delivery! So we wandered to Ming's a place we had not been in the past. 1. The egg rolls were ok, not the best I've had. 2. The rest of the food was really good. We had Mongolian beef, chicken with pea pods, and fried rice. All three dinners were pronounced quite good. We also tried the potstickers and those were pronounced good. The only thing that was average was the egg rolls. We have not had much luck finding a good occasional Chinese takeout place since moving to Maryland. We will give Ming's a chance to be that place!!!! read more

Came with several friends to try this place properly by ordering a bunch of dishes family style. The dining room is pretty small, probably holds about 20 people max. But it didn't matter on a random Tue evening. Ordered young chow fried rice, beef chow foon, roast duck, prawns w/ salted egg yolk, seaweed infused fish fillet, and salt pepper pork chops. The duck came out first with a nice presentation. It had great flavor and pretty meaty, but it could have been warmed up (was pretty cold). Maybe that's how they serve it but usually a duck has a lot of fat, and cold fat isn't very appetizing. Fried rice and chow foon were pretty standard, a lot smaller portions than I was expecting; fried rice was kinda oily, but chow foon had good wok hei. My favorites were the shrimp, pork, and fish, although probably because they were all fried. The fish was fresh and excellent, nicely flavored with seaweed. I'd definitely would order those three dishes again. Service was decent, food came out fast. read more

Surprised my family had never tried this place - it's been around for a long time, but I guess we usually went to the now-closed Pacifica Cafe around the corner or Yoyogi and Ming's is tucked in a side street. It's open for takeout later than a lot of the Chinese restaurants nearby, and while the ambiance isn't fancy, the taste is good for homey style cooking. We've done pickup mostly and the manager (maybe the owner?) is always super friendly - I ask her for recommendations on the menu based on what I've liked before when I pickup, and the last rec was the seaweed infused fish fillets, which have def been a hit in our family. Supposedly their Chinese roast meats are really good too, but my family's pescatarian so that's a bit of a harder sell. It also seems like the dishes we've liked more are the less Americanese ones, so keep it in mind when you're ordering. But definitely excited to eat through the menu, even after bypassing this place for at least 10+ years. Would recommend! read more

Update from my review of 12/6/2020 : Delivery. Hot and sour soup MUCH! improved. Still excellent ingredients not overcooked. But the broth was orders of magnitude better. Much spicier and more flavorful. Eggplant too sweet. Sriracha helped. Good quality, not overcooked, but TOO sweet. Braised Pork Ribs- 5 Stars. 7 lean, meaty ribs with rich, unctuous sauce and Chinese greens. Again, get the authentic Chinese. 12/6/2020 Delivery. Hot and sour soup: 3.5. Great ingredients but a broth needs intensity. Less than the sum of its parts. Up the broth and go to 4.5. Son rated wonton soup as a 3. Orange chicken: 3.5. The sauce was excellent, including orange skin with the white pith well trimmed off. But the chicken appeared to be lower quality cuts (Which is probably authentic but not high en)d. Green beans:4. Looks like your aunts kitchen from 1975 and the staff is welcoming. Great variety as one can go very traditional with Taiwanese Dim Sum, Vietnamese soups, authentic Chinese, or Americanized standards. My wife loved the beef noodle soup. Just look at the rich color of the beef! She also enjoyed the soy milk with fried bread. Although I go purely Americanized dishes, and I started with Crab Rangoon, I went to the one of the authentic areas on the menu for Diced Chicken in Hot Peppers. Beautifully fried small bites of chicken infused with some mild heat and lots of flavor. As a drinker of Diet Coke, only having cans instead of fountain soda was a bit of a downer. First timer. Ordered a couple of dishes to try it out. Singapore rice noodles and beef lo mein were very dry and surprisingly spicy. The Pad Thai Chicken was also very spicy. Now I like spice, but this was not expected on these dishes. The Kung Pao Chicken was very good and spicy (as expected!). The spring rolls were average. This place definitely deserves more credit than it's gotten so far on Yelp. The food is absolutely delicious and authentic. My wife and I went to Ming's for the first time last week and we were indecisive on what dishes to get at first. The waitress came over and I asked her for recommendations. She suggested the 3-dish 1-soup combo since that was the most authentic Chinese dishes. We took their advice, ordered stringbeans, shredded pork with bamboo shoots, and cellophane noodles with minced meat. For the soup, we ordered hot and sour soup. Now this isn't your standard "American style Chinese restaurant" hot and sour soup, this was packed with the right flavors and also had a nice kick to it. The main dishes were loaded with spices and left us wanting more. I read every single previous review before I went here and was surprised by the amount of 3-star reviews that this place had. The authenticity flavor of the food far outweighs any one-off incident of subpar customer service, loud customers, or the old and plain interior design. Order with confidence, and if you're lost, don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. Oh, one last thing, at the end of the meal I asked the waitress what region of China would they consider their food as, and her response was the following (In Chinese): The owner said that it's based on south western style, but also that she tried to find the best dishes that patrons like from all the neighboring restaurants and made a version of their own. read more

I'm not a big pho fan and trying to find a good Chinese restaurant in the Kentlands has its challenges (only really liked Pacfica for some of their dishes). Still bummed Chopstix on Muddy Branch closed. Anyways, I read reviews that this place is under new ownership with Taiwanese cuisine too, so I checked this place. I've been here twice and will say stick with their Chinese Authentic entrees. I like their scrambled eggs with shrimp, salt and pepper pork chop, shacha beef (a bit sweet though), spicy fish fillet (it's spicy!), and their version of Taiwanese fried chicken nuggets. Caveat, it is not the same like jumbo jumbo. Their American menu I haven't tried except for Kung pao chicken. Meh, I've had better. Can't comment on their pho. They have a good lunch deal. 3 courses for $18 like Bobs. Will have to come back for that and their dim sum too. read more

Love their 3 entree special with soup. It's perfect for a family of three and under $26. Our top go to dishes are (1) scrambled egg and shrimp and (2) Shacha beef - tender beef and greens in a brown sauce with a hint of sweetness. For our 3rd dish we keep trying new things like green beans ( a bit spicy) and fried pork. I have not been disappointed yet. The cashier asked if I was Chinese. When I said no she was surprised because she said my order was solid authentic Chinese dishes. Thanks to my Taiwanese sister in law we have a sense of what's good. If you do carry out you get a 10% discount which I would totally recommend since the restaurant itself is not that nice inside. I can't wait to try more Authentic dishes. read more

Small, unassuming Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant in the Kentlands. Came here for a casual dinner on a Saturday night and was received by friendly service and hot food. I tried the combination lo mein and the chicken with dry bean curd (it tastes much better than it sounds, I swear!) and both were tasty dishes. I'll definitely be back to try their pho. The Chinese dishes get a thumbs-up from me. They have a $5.00 credit card minimum and from the looks of the menu, very affordable lunch specials ($6.95 for most entrees). read more

Tina W. pretty much wrote everything you need to know about this place. This used to be a Vietnamese Pho place but in 2014 changed owner and is now an authentic Chinese restaurant (authentic in every way including the service) and although they still serve pho, you don't want to get it here...go to a real pho place for that! Also the regulars are folks who most likely don't even know what Yelp is (i.e. my parents generation). They go where they can get real Chinese food (not orange chicken or beef and broccoli). They order things not on the menu or are only written in Chinese. They chat with the owner, ask for what's fresh in the kitchen today and pre-order certain dishes that require advance notice (like the duck). Like most restaurants, they only have a couple stellar dishes, the duck, shrimp in egg yolk, a white fish dish (don't know the name), a casserole with everything in it...and a few others escaping me right now. I am a semi-regular as my parents are regulars so I join them from time to time. This is where they like to entertain their friends/relatives. The restaurant is small and service is adequate. Definitely helps if you can speak or read Chinese and chat with the owner and ask her for recommendations. Also I tried their weekend dim sum, was not impressed. read more

New ownership as of June 2014 - I was delighted to see they introduced a few more authentic Chinese and Taiwanese cuisines on the menu, rather than the old confusing Vietnamese + Chinese + whatever they used to serve. Gone are the open kitchen layout and pale coloring, which may scare some folks who are frequent visitors of Ming's. However we had a chance to try 3 appetizers (house made cold radish, chilled tofu, oyster pancake), and 2 entrees (Tainan Stewed Pork Noodle, Cod Fish & Tofu in Hot Pot). Overall we were impressed with their taste and their reasonable portion size (for the price). I'd be back to try their Taiwanese dim sum menu (before 3pm on weekends), and especially their oyster pancake (which is better than Bob 66's and Taipei Cafe's version). You might be lucky and get those dim sum selections after 3pm, but mostly they'll be out of them by dinner time. I haven't had an American Chinese food itch yet, so I can't say much about their sesame chicken, fried rice, and so forth, but I'll post an update when I get that itch. Check out the new menu (shown in green) that is on top of their regular menu. I'd definitely recommend giving the green menu a shot next time you visit Ming's. The menu however does not specify when those dim sum items were available, so we were disappointed when the owner told us they ran out most of the items (hence a star is lost). Nevertheless you (yelpers and observers) know now! Dim sum before 3pm on weekends, and they also have 3 entrees + 1 soup combo for $18.95 on weekdays, for sharing between 2+ people obviously, not for yourself...pig! :D read more

Delicious authentic Chinese food, usually Shanghainese and Taiwanese style. My parents say it reminds them a lot of food back home. I haven't been here in a couple years so I decided to try it again. Nothing has changed. In terms of PHO, the broth is still bland, the quantity of meat is low and the viet style iced coffee is awful. See my prior review. I can think of no reason to go here for PHO unless you live in the Kentlands and your only option is a place within walking distance. And even if that's the case, walk a little further to Pho City which is a much better authentic Viet PHO experience. read more

Little Asian cafe in Kentlands. A couple of bad experiences here, from a vegetarian perspective. One, we ordered a vegetable and tofu soup, which came with chicken broth. To be fair, a lot of places do this, and we should have asked, but I was a little put off when we asked for it to be sent back asking for vegetable stock and were told that most people like chicken broth because it's "more tastier". Not to us, it isn't. Also, once that flat out ran out of tofu on us and we had to get a noodle dish instead, which wasn't great. These things having been said, I'm a nice guy and I let these things go and have eaten here quite a few times. I recommend caution, that's all. It's a nice little place with indoor and outdoor seating, and their vegetarian dishes, once you get to them, are pretty delicious. They have perhaps the best kung pao tofu I've ever had, which is saying something because every Chinese restaurant does this dish. They also have a delicious stir fried tofu and hot pepper appetizer, and several other solid dishes. Their spicy dishes are actually spicy, which is often not the case with Chinese restaurants. And you get a lot of food for your money. I say all of this averages out to three stars. read more

Everything was too oily. I really want to like this place. It's got all the items that I would like to like at a good price and quantity but the execution was off. I came in for lunch and got the sesame chicken, fried rice, spring roll, and an orange soda all for $8.50 which is a great price but here's what should have been changed: 1. The sesame chicken had way too much sauce and way too much oil, I'd recommend either saying no extra sauce on the plate, light on the oil, or immediately dumping the extra sauce out when you get it so that it doesn't get absorbed into the chicken. 2. The spring roll was too oily. Either they shouldn't fry it for so long or ask them to leave it in for half the time they normally leave it in. (or play it safe and get the won ton soup) 3. The fried rice was too oily. Again ask for it to be fried for about half the time they normally do. I would like to try this place again but I'm hesitant read more

The food is tasty and authentic. But the service is horrible. I stopped calling in orders. Their English is TERRIBLE so I started ordering online. They mess that up too. I would recommend checking your order before you leave. And I would never dine in. When it first opened up years ago, it was clean and the owners were great. Friendly service and a bowl of soup. Yes, there's better pho to be had, but if it's a cold night and you want a bowl of soup, and you live in the Kentlands and you don't wanna travel the 15 minutes it takes to get to Pho House in Germantown or 15 minutes for what I hear is an excellent bowl of beef soup, spicy or not, at Michael's Noodles in Rockville, this is the place to go. In addition to pho, we had the Sechuan Dumplings, which had a nice texture, but tasted of commercial beef base. FWIW, the eggplant with shrimp at the next table looked pretty decent. I ordered them for delivery. I ordered the pho noodle soup The noodles were overcooked and mushy. I couldn't even pick them up with my chopsticks, they broke apart every time. The meat was over cooked and bland. The broth was pretty good. I also ordered garden rolls/Summer rolls. They were bland and basically just lettuce and noodles. I think there were two l tiny shrimp and some sort of bland meat I couldn't tell if it was chicken or pork, plus they did not include a dipping sauce. They also included free spring rolls with my order. I'm glad I didn't pay for them they were slimy and mushy inside. On the plus side the staff was friendly and delivery was prompt. I strongly believe in ignoring frilly restaurant shenanigans in exchange for good food. This is one such restaurant. The seating area is pretty small but homey. Food comes out quickly, piping hot, and delicious. If the owner lady recognizes you, she might throw in some free appetizers. A few recommendations while I try to look for the english names on the menu: -Shredded pork w/ rice cakes: This is made with shredded snow cabbage as well and it's omg delicious. It's carb heaven and I would happily eat the entire serving in reaching my 500 lb goal. - Ground pork w/ bean paste sauce noodles AKA Zhajiang mian AKA jja jang mian: the original Chinese version is worth a try. The noodles they use are chewy and yummy and a great secondary supplement to reaching carb heaven. - "Lions head" meatballs: I really can't find this on their menu but I guess it's just for people with moms who know what's up. These are braised meatballs about the size of your fist on a bed of vermicelli and spinach. Goes great with rice AKA little carb granules-- a basic companion in reaching carb heaven. Despite their advertising for Taiwanese food-- this is not the place to get it. Would not recommend their oyster omelette or beef noodle soup. Oysters are extra fishy smelling. Soup is bland and not one of their strong suits, though I do commend them for their choice for the cut of beef-- good amount of tendons to add to tenderness. Oh yeah, the no frills part? There wasn't hand soap in the bathroom and the door could use some deeeeeeep cleaning as it's a bit sticky. You go here for the food though, not for the bathroom. Keep some hand sanitizer handy. Street parking is abundant even on weekends. w00t w00t! read more
