Bob's had been on my "must try" list for years. Finally, my time to try it arrived! We got everything to go. Everything was packaged and ready to go when I arrived at the restaurant. I questioned if the dumplings would hold up on the ride home but they were still hot even after the 20+ minute drive. We got chicken soup dumplings (so good!) the beef curry buns (would absolutely recommend), the flounder, hot and sour soup, and the duck. Everything was great, even as takeaway. The portions were huge. It wasn't cheap but I felt like everything was worth it. Id definitely get it again!

Came here twice this month and was happy with both experiences. We ordered similar items but of note was the spicy fried tofu and chengdu chicken. Dan dan noodle after a good mix was flavorful with a good spice. Will try the jaja mian and pork sauce noodles next. The pork and rice mushroom shumai was also of note. It is similar to the lotus leaf pork rice in most dim sum restaurants. Service was friendly and fast. Prices were a bit on the steep side for the portions that you get. Especially $25 for a portion of crispy beef. You can certainly get that dish for under $20 at some other locations. You also get 10% off by paying cash FYI. Will come back to get the noodle soups next time.

Hands down this is the best casual soup dumplings restaurant in DMV. You can see them making the soup dumplings in the window right when you walk in. The service was standard with courteous but prompt servers. We ordered all the soup dumpling varieties on the menu and they were all made with delicate skin and heart warming flavorful broth. Definitely will return on another cold day. In addition, we tried their General Bob's chicken, their version of the Americanized General Tsos, and it was crispy and not very spicy. It came out fairly quickly and we were able to enjoy it before the soup dumplings came. It's a staple for Chinese cuisine and I would bring family here as well since there is a wide variety of dishes to try, something for everyone. I'll definitely come back.

One of my go-to chinese restaurants. Bob's is perfect for groups of 4 or more and eating family style so that everyone can try a bit of everything! The food selection is big enough that you will always be trying something new when you go, plus they have some of the best soup dumplings in the area! Clean restaurant, friendly staff, and once again the best dumplings! The spicy and salt pork is also a go-to item for me. You must try it out. I can't recommend this place enough, you will not be disappointed!

Bob's Shanghai 66 is one of those unassuming Rockville gems where the food speaks louder than the décor. Located on North Washington Street, it's a no‑frills spot that consistently draws crowds for one reason: the soup dumplings. I came in for lunch and immediately noticed the steady stream of regulars always a good sign. The Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) lived up to the hype: delicate wrappers, rich broth, and perfectly seasoned pork filling. They arrive steaming hot, so pace yourself, but they're easily the highlight of the menu. Service here is straightforward and efficient. Don't expect fine‑dining polish, but the staff keeps things moving and makes sure dishes arrive quickly. Prices are fair for the quality, and portions are generous enough to share. Verdict: Come hungry, order the soup dumplings and a few small plates, and you'll leave happy. Bob's Shanghai 66 is a Rockville staple worth revisiting, especially if you're a dumpling lover.

Paid a first time visit during lunch rush hour but the wait went by quicker than I thought! Had the opportunity to mark off items on the menu while waiting. Service was fantastic and the food came out quicker than I expected. Casual vibes indoors with plenty of seating. Truly enjoyed every single dish I ordered! Everything was savory, not too salty or sweet, spice was perfect, and portions were great. I always appreciate having complimentary tea to help cleanse the palate before my next bite. Most definitely recommend you stop by and I'll be planning to pay another visit too. Tip: paying in cash gives you 10% off!

The most AMAZING Chinese food I've ever had who deserves ALLLLL those awards on the wall I loved everything we tried, but you must not go without trying the spicy baby bamboo and the spicy fried tofu (top right corner of the first slide) which was so so crunchy and flavorful Also pictured starting from the first slide: Pan-fried pork buns in the fluffiest sweet bread Chicken soup dumplings The original pork soup dumplings Kung pao chicken Singapore rice noodles Spicy pork wontons It gets busy here so prepare for a wait, but it's worth it!!

Until Nan xiang came to town (from my hometown of Queens NY) this was my go-to spot for Xiao long bao. The crispy beef, spicy wontons, and Szechuan green beans are also really good. Pro-tip: bring cash to get 10% off your bill.

The xiao long bao was delicious. The outside peel was a good thickness where it was not too thick and it was not too thin that it would break. Each soup dumpling had a decent amount of soup inside. The beef tendon and beef noodle soup was nice and spicy. The tendon was super soft and the beef was soft enough that my kids didn't have a hard time chewing. The minced pork rice was also good since it was not too oily. The soy sauce egg was flavored nicely.

There were maybe 6 groups before us but they went so fast. The space was decently sized but they went through the groups really quickly. The food came out almost immediately. The food itself was so flavorful, the cold noodles took us by surprise and was the best thing on the menu. It was actually spicy. The shumai had so much meat. The crab was real and you could taste it in the XLB. Love this place so much and would go back to try everything else on the menu!

The soup dumplings here were lovely, and I'll definitely be back to have them again. I'd also like to give their other dumplings and wontons a try based on that. Unfortunately, I found the other dishes we ordered pretty badly underseasoned. The salt and pepper tofu was completely bland (no salt or pepper), the zongzi tasted of nothing, and overall I was just hoping for more flavor from our dishes. Service was fast and the space is roomy. 3 stars purely for the dumplings, which I deeply enjoyed.

Bob's truly never misses on service and flavor. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the DMV and I thoroughly enjoy my experience every time I come here. It is a little pricey, but the portion sizes are large. My favorite is coming with friends to order a bunch of dishes to share. Best XLB in the DMV by far-- so juicy, lots of pork, and perfect thickness of the dumpling wrapper. Szechuan green beans are always crispy, garlicky, spicy, and salty. I love their Singapore noodles, which highlight a curry flavor with salty and spicy notes on the backend. It was my first time ordering the bok choy, which I might have to get every time now because it was so fresh and flavorful. My favorite thing by far is the spicy fried tofu-- so crispy on the outside, soft on the inside with garlic, chili peppers, and herbs to create the perfect bite.

Bob's is still our family's go-to for good Chinese food. On our last visit, we got our staples - shrimp fried rice and kung pao tofu - and it was as good as expected. We usually get takeout, but this time we ate in, and their space is much bigger now that they've remodeled. Still the best Chinese food on the Pike in my opinion. And don't forget to bring cash to get that discount!

Besides the soup dumplings, what are other must-try dishes you would recommend?

Definitely try the spicy pork wontons, i enjoy the spicy fried tofu and crispy chicken/beef

Do they ever do the cart service for dim sum here?

They do not do dim sum cart service here. The restaurant is not the biggest, soI doubt there'd be enough space for carts.

Is there usually a long line of people waiting?

Depending on the day, Friday night, Saturday and Sunday there is a line usually 20-60min. Rest of the week no wait.

Do they have a Chinese New Year menu?

They did not specifically say anything about the NY menu, but i am pretty sure you can create your own from their menu =)

Do they still offer the lunch specials, entree with soup?

no, they've stopped that when covid started

What is the current situation with dine-in or outdoor seating? If there is seating, do they practice social distancing properly?

So dining in is an option. There are both indoor and outdoor seating. However, the outdoor seating is very limited and consists of small tables. However, there are a lot of people standing outside as well waiting for seating or takeout. I don't feel… Read more

Are the soup dumplings good for take out?

Yes! We have gotten them five times for takeout during COVID and they are still hot and soup-filled after the 40 minute (worth it) drive home.

    Is it wheelchair accessible?

Unfortunately no... plus the place gets really packed, it's already hard to walk around I can't imagine with a wheel chair. The place it's at a mall and it has stairs as well.

Do we need to make a reservation?

Hi! I've always walked in without problems. You may want to consider making a reservation if you are going for the Chinese New Year. Happy eating!

    Open Christmas Day?

Hi Ms Robin, Yes we will be open! but might have shortened hours

Is the Dim Sum menu available for dinner as well? (Other than the soup dumplings)

Nope. Pretty sure it's only on the weekend (brunch hours). They always offer the soup dumplings - 6 to an order.

Are soup dumplings available at lunch?

    Yup

I see they have a chicken soup base XLB now. Is that completely pork free?

Yes! Our Chicken XLB is completely pork free. We took our time and did it right, come in and enjoy. We are very sensitive and deliberate with our processes.

Do they take check or it's strictly cash only?

They only take cash. It is definitely worth the trip to the ATM!

I came because I heard someone rave about the vegetarian dumplings --they were solid. Quite large and filled with mushrooms, onions, green vegetables and seasoning. I ordered the veggie buns as well, but it's the same filling as the dumplings so no need to order both. I enjoyed both. I also ordered the kung pao tofu which was okay. Some of the tofu pieces were fried too hard and made it difficult to chew. The flavor was spot on. I would return and possibly try a different tofu dish, but it appears that they are better with the meat dishes so I'm not sure if it's the most comfortable option for vegetarians. Nevertheless, I liked my experience overall.

I have kept this place in the back of my mind, with fond memories, however, have not visited in some years due to multiple moves around the country. Recently, my friend was organizing a casual gathering for our friend group, and asked ChatGPT if there were any good recommendations for food in the area that was affordable and delicious, and A&J came up as a top choice. So I came back to A&J after almost 10 years, and the food was just as good as I remembered. The decor remained simple and unchanged, but this is very typical of Asian restaurants. The menu was large, and it's easy to order by circling items you want on the paper menu. We had a mix of noodle soup bowls (so many different flavors and styles) and appetizers, and everything we tried was delicious. Our bill came out to less than $25 per person with tip. I could imagine more pretentious Chinese restaurants downtown upcharging a lot more for lower quality Chinese food (Queen's English, for example). It was so good and affordable, that I actually ended up coming back the next day with a different friend. Overall, excellent experience, and I will be back again soon! One interesting tidbit, my coworker who grew up in the Midwest and only eats meat, potatoes, absolutely no vegetables, started going here for lunch and loves it. I think flour-based items (noodles, dumplings, buns) are really the star of the restaurant, and this can be enjoyed across different taste palates! I hope you will give this place a try.

I went by today to double check just to make sure I didn't give false information, but it appears they are gone. That's too bad since some of the dishes that they were putting out were so freaking delicious. For instance, I don't ever normally order Hunan chicken, but somebody mentioned in Yelp how good it was, and I have been hooked on it ever since. They also had a pan-fried bean curd with shrimp paste app that was out of this world. Tasted like dim sum... and it actually reminded me of a delicious app I get at Malaysia Kapotiam. The kung pao dish comes with asparagus, green/red pepper snd mushrooms. The peppers were nice and crunchy. Very good. The pork dish is heavy on the ginger, but very good. The spring roll was "ok". The service started out well. We were warmly greeted and the food came out promptly. But our water glasses were empty for a long time, to the point where I was going to ask the cashier for help finding water. With us being the only customers in the place and Staff walking around (and I placed my empty glass at the edge of the table facing the center of the room), it was pretty disappointing and annoying. It's a nice restaurant with a nice vibe. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on the service - maybe there's a lot to do in the back to prepare to close after lunch.

I absolutely love this place! Everything we order always hits. From the cucumber salad, to the…read morenoodles, to the pancake. Everything is absolutely delicious. But I gotta say, my all time favorite dish is the cucumber salad. OMG I could eat it all day everyday. It is just so perfectly seasoned, spicy, refreshing, ugh I loveeee it. The hand pulled noodles are always so good. We've had the noodle soup which is also so good. Literally everything they make is good And besides Bobs Shanghai, I am certain these are the best xiaolongbao I've had in MOCO! They are BIG, juicy, soupy, meaty and so yummy. I don't like that they always forget to give us the vinegar sauce but we ask for it anyways. Highly recommend!!

The pork buns alone are worth the order…read more Got this delivered via Uber Eats and honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm glad I took the chance. Ordered the beef combo knife slice noodle soup, pork soup dumplings, pork wontons with homemade spicy sauce, and the pan fried pork buns. The pan fried pork buns were the clear MVP here, perfectly crispy on the outside with that satisfying crunch, but soft and fluffy inside. Super filling too, which is always a win in my book. The beef noodle soup was solid comfort food with good portions, and the dumplings hit the spot. Only minor thing - I wished the "spicy sauce" had more kick to it. Could've used some extra heat, but that's me being picky. For the price and portion sizes, this place delivers (pun intended). You're getting a solid amount of food that actually tastes good. Would definitely order again, and those pork buns are going to be a repeat item for sure.
