We had a nice lunch today. Came at 2 pm and the restaurant was pretty much empty. (Restaurant closes at 3 before reopening at 4:40 pm for dinner.). I got the King Pao Chicken and my partner got the Szechuan double cooked pork. Both were very good each cost $13, and came with a soup and a spring roll. For most of the entrees, you can get your choice of protein with a cost of plus or minus a dollar or two depending on what you choose. The entrees don't come with rice. White or fried rice is 50 cents. Brown rice is $1. Not unreasonable. Some people don't eat rice. We shared one fried rice and it was plenty. And it's good. I got the hot and sour soup and my partner got the egg drop. The hot and sour emphasis here is on pepper and spice. The egg drop had a nice, rich egg flavor. The entrees each were good. The kung pao dish comes with asparagus, green/red pepper snd mushrooms. The peppers were nice and crunchy. Very good. The pork dish is heavy on the ginger, but very good. The spring roll was "ok". The service started out well. We were warmly greeted and the food came out promptly. But our water glasses were empty for a long time, to the point where I was going to ask the cashier for help finding water. With us being the only customers in the place and Staff walking around (and I placed my empty glass at the edge of the table facing the center of the room), it was pretty disappointing and annoying. It's a nice restaurant with a nice vibe. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on the service - maybe there's a lot to do in the back to prepare to close after lunch. read more

Service and food preparation were really good. That said, there was a lot going on with the menu, and I wasn't sure what to order. The server didn't have any recommendations, nor could they sufficiently describe any of the dishes to me. Every entree I mentioned, I was told was food, which wasn't helpful. I ended up getting a special with pork belly. I asked it be made extra spicy. Additionally I had to order rice (because this entree did not come with rice) and an egg drop soup. The soup came out right away and was really good. My entree took an extremely long time though. And I was immediately unimpressed with the pork belly. I've realized now pork belly should only be fried. The way it was cooked in this dish left it chewy and bland. The potatoes and onions and other flavors in the dish were nice, so I took the food to go. I don't make it out to Rockville often so it's unlikely I'd return here again. read more

Another great Chinese restaurant in Rockville specializing is Sichuan cuisine. Menu was very similar to that of Peter Chang's (bubble scallion pancakes, bamboo flounder, eggplant fries, ect). Decor and vibe was modern and slightly upscale. Had the spicy fish stew and mapo tofu (no meat). The fish stew had plenty of heat (in temperature and spice). Had the typical Napa cabbage accompaniment. It had a heaping pile of cilantro on top as well as added cumin spice. Those items added more flake depth. The mapo tofu came in a bubbling cauldron. Could taste more black bean flavor compared to that in other restaurants. Both dishes were very tasty. Will definitely try their other signature dishes next time read more

A word of caution, right from the start. Please come here hungry! We weren't super hungry but wanted to grab a meal before watching a movie. We should have come in famished and ready to go because there was a lot we wanted to try and we ended up getting way more than we could finish. Now, on to the food itself! Hits: - Potato dry pot: crispy and tasty, almost addicting. We loved it. - Vegetable dumplings: perfect. Just perfect. Perfect texture, flavors (sauce Is excellent) and...yeah just great all the way around. - shrimp dumplings: again with the perfect flavors, perfect amount of shrimp in the dumpling, and delish sauce. - Diced chicken: loved it, good amount of chicken but maybe too many Szechuan chilies? Not because it made it too hot for us, mostly because they just got in the way. Misses: - dry fried cauliflower: emphasis on the "dry". First few bites are good but then we kinda got sick of it as it was somehow both dry and heavy. The dishes we loved we truly loved, and there's plenty on the menu that we would love to come back and try. We got to enjoy our meal surrounded by some lovely interiors decor. Previously Peter Chang restaurant, this new branded restaurant seems to have kept the same menu. I was told by the waiter that the chef is still the same one. We tried a few traditional dishes on the menu, and I have to say the spices are definitely there! For brown sugar rice cake, the rice cake texture was not as sticky and smooth as it should have been, and the dipping powder was interesting with spices instead of just sweet sugar. Maybe because it is an appetizer, not a dessert. Service was good except we waited a bit long for main courses to come. However I will have to say the lunch menu prices are VERY reasonable. We were headed to another restaurant and decided to pop in to this one because we had heard that this place used to be a Peter Chang. Decided to give it a go. It's quite spacious and clean inside. The food prices seems to be a hit or a miss. For the chicken dishes $16/20 was a good deal for the amount. But, when you're comparing that with the wuhan noodles to be $13, the noodles then seem to be overpriced. Just by comparing, I thoroughly enjoyed the diced spicy chicken (#34) and at $16, it ended up being the most worth it for me. The overall taste was better than expected. We thought this place was going to be a bit more Americanized rather than authentic, but it was surprisingly good. So this place was a Peter Chang restaurant. Now, it's a newer and better and tastier restaurant called Kungfu Kitchen (new owner and management as well). The taste and price of the dishes were really good. $176 post-tax, pre-tip, for five entrees and four appetizers is a steal! House special broiled branzino was excellent. For $45, you get a humongous fish with a generous amount of veggies and potatoes in the broth. The taste was superb. The other entrees were delicious as well. The two children chomped on the rice cake and pancake dishes. So I missed out. But judging from their fervor, the dishes had to be good! The Dan Dan noodle was probably the only dish that did not hold its weight. It was alright at best. The menu is extensive and we've only scratched its surface. In the old "PF Chang's" space in downtown Rockville. Ambience and decorations are amazing. Staff is super friendly. They make accommodations to items on request. Indoor and outdoor seating. Wheelchair accessible. The food - not bad, not great, but all good. HUGE portions. Decent prices. But apps and main dishes delivered person by person across many minutes of time, so our group of five didn't really "eat together." The option is politely wait and eat cold stuff, or watch others eat and then they watch you eat. The apps are AMAZING. Spring rolls and steamed dumplings - very delicious. The main meals - not bad at all and huge portions, but not packed with flavor that is typical of Chinese food. Still - we enjoyed it all. They have lunch specials and dinner specials. Unfortunately this place is closed. I was planning on eating there last night and giving them the just review they deserved. However, when I walked by, I noticed that the open signs were taken down and sitting on the table along with other business items. Chairs blocked the entrance. Windows were wide open and nobody was anywhere in the restaurant during operating hours. I tried calling and nobody picked up. I went by today to double check just to make sure I didn't give false information, but it appears they are gone. That's too bad since some of the dishes that they were putting out were so freaking delicious. For instance, I don't ever normally order Hunan chicken, but somebody mentioned in Yelp how good it was, and I have been hooked on it ever since. They also had a pan-fried bean curd with shrimp paste app that was out of this world. Tasted like dim sum... and it actually reminded me of a delicious app I get at Malaysia Kapotiam. Hmmm... maby it's time to pay them a visit! They weren't there that long and unfortunately I guess they didn't have enough funds to survive long enough for people to find out about them. He was a chef for Peter Chang and bought the restaurant from him, I think less than a year ago. The menu was probably too extensive and they didn't excel at all dishes, but what they excelled at were exceptionally good. With the fierce competition in Chinese cuisine in the Rockville area, they probably should have scaled their menu back to what they did best that other places around the area either didn't do, or didn't excel at. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic flavor and food! For the longest time I confused Peter Chang with PF Chang. They are not the same. I also opt for Cantonese before Szechuan because the latter tends to have more spicy dishes. But there are certainly many non-spicy dishes on the menu of Peter Chang and his other restaurants. After having such a difficult week, we decided to go out for dinner to end on a good note. I will always start with the famous bubble pancake. My mind is still blown on how it's made. Someone please allow me into the kitchen to see. Please? And you have to eat it with the curry dip. The pancake may have been enough for four but between the two of us, we did pretty good. We got three entrees of seafood curry, basil eggplant, and black pepper beef. The seafood curry was the same curry as the pancake dip so when we ran out of the dip, we started dipping the pancake in the seafood hot pot. The seafood curry was my favorite of the three that we ordered. The black pepper beef was too peppery. The basil eggplant had a great basil flavor. Peter Chang has mastered the flavors of his dishes. It was such a wonderful culinary experience. We had so much leftover, that there will definitely be enough for tomorrow's lunch. I plan to put ramen in the seafood curry. There was a lot of sauce left that will make a good "soup" with the ramen. Parking: There is plenty of free two hour parking in the nearby garage. Service: Fantastic. We were greeted at the door and seated right away. Not sure if they take reservations because I didn't see any option to do it online. We didn't have a problem just walking in on a Friday evening around 6:00 p.m. The restaurant did get busy after that. Our server was attentive and checked in on us a few times. Decor: Lovely decor overall. The booth that we sat in did have seats that were tattered. Might be time to do some minor repairs to spruce it up. I have visited Kung Fu Kichen restaurants in Orlando, FL & Alexandria, VA. I thought they were a chain restaurant that is not the case. However, I have heard that the owners of each location collaborate with each other. This visit was at 12:30 PM on a Monday. Only 1 other table was occupied. The main reason for this visit was to eat soup dumplings. This whole experience was a huge disappointment! First of all, the center dumplings in each of the 2 baskets of our order had broth flowing out of the dumplings. The whole reason for eating soup dumplings is to savor the broth in the dumplings! Second of all, the service was extremely slow, considering there was only 2 other tables occupied the entire 2 hours we were there. Thirdly, we ordered 2 additional dishes after finishing our initial order. We placed it with 2 different staff members. After waiting 15 minutes for the dishes, we asked about the order, we asked when whether we were going to received the food. We were told that they had a glitch in their system & the kitchen did not receive the order. Interestingly, they write orders on a pad of paper. You would think that the staff would check with us if we had received our order or if we needed anything else while we sat there for over 15 minutes. We definitely will not be returning to this restaurant due to the extremely poor service. read more

Ordered Mapo tofu, some garlic shrimp dish, and kung pao chicken. The food.....is .... AWFUL. Mapo tofu comes in a clay pot. Looks good but my goodness......it is SO bad. The flavor has no fire taste, it's so flowery. WHAT is that flowery perfume like taste???? The shrimp dish had very plump big pieces of shrimp but the vegetables? Little bit of asparagus. Little bit of snow peas. Tons and tons of what is it leek? Huge spring onion type of vegetable which was just not good. My favorite dish in the Chinese cuisine is Kung pao chicken. Looks phenomenal but wait... again.... What is that Clinique by happy? What is this some new YSL perfume? Cologne? WHAT IS THAT FLOWERY FLORAL flavor??! It just ruins the dishes. Where is the taste of that fiery wok? Why is it replaced with this god awful floral flavor??!! Also any restaurant that charges for rice when you order main dishes is an absolute joke. I went for lunch today and I was very disappointed with the food quality -the steamed shrimp dumplings were hard, as if they were left outside for awhile. They were not hot or fresh and the filling was horrible. I always get the shrimp dumplings and this time, I was surprised at how bad they were. Even the sauces they served with it were a sweet sour mess. Highly disappointing. I ordered a lunch to go- chicken with onions and peppers. This was swimming in oil. And no flavor whatsoever. Not sure why this place got just 3.5 stars. The food at Peter Chang is always good. Portions could be a bit better, but taste wise the food is always delectable. I tried the pork shank December special, and it was amazing! The meat was super tender, and at $16 was a terrific deal! My go to starter is the spicy fried eggplant. That never disappoints. Make sure not to get it to go, as it will get soggy. The bang bang shrimp was tasty, and goes good with rice (not included). Personally, I'm not a big fan of Peter Chang the man, since he defected and is now taking in millions. It's like illegal immigration doesn't apply to celebrities and good chefs. So I hate to write bad reviews, but this is a warning to others who may have had good food from here in the past. It's bad now. Really bad. Overly salty, but no taste in one dish. Another dish had a raw piece of beef - not intentionally rare, just raw (and the beef quality was very poor to start with). It also had lots of sugar added to the sauce which didn't make sense for the dish. Egg drop soup had lots of yellow food dye added. Low quality dumplings in wonton soup. It's sad to see a restaurant go downhill. Waitstaff also dressed strangely inappropriate for a family restaurant. All around weird vibes. I highly doubt the legitimacy of recent positive reviews. I think they have to be friends or family, or just paid reviews. This is a great spot for Chinese food. I came here because a friend had recommended it to me. I really liked the bubble scallion pancake. It was crispy and the sauce that came with it was good, it had a curry flavor. The dan dan noodles were ok. It was spicy but didn't have as much flavor as the other dishes. I liked the pepper beef, the meat was flavorful and cooked well. The Peking duck was also good. I liked the sauce and the wraps that it came with. Overall, I had a good meal here. read more

My family unknowingly arrived to Peter Chang just an hour before it closed, so all the dishes we ordered came out really fast. We got the scallion bubble pancakes, half chang peking duck, basil eggplant, golden mountain beef, fried rice with shrimp, and salt and pepper shrimp. All of this didn't fit on our table so the waitress kindly pulled up a chair to put the Peking duck on. The scallion bubble pancake was very interestingly puffy, but it was quite bland without using the dipping sauce and needed more scallions. The Peking duck wrapper was more wet and sticky than we liked, and the food was generally oily. However, the golden mountain beef was interestingly crispy on the exterior and the fried rice was particularly good. read more

Peter Chang has been making good to great food all over the DMV for years, including this Rockville location. The lunch option here is a fantastic deal, with an egg roll, soup, and a big entree for $12 - 15. The hot and sour soup is the best I've had, and the sauces on everything are excellent, especially the hot numbing sauce, but even something quotidian like my recent lunch order of chicken and broccoli is elevated by a thick, rich sauce. The pan-fried pork dumplings are a great appetizer, too, with (surprise!) two excellent dipping sauces that elevate an already flavorful, perfectly seasoned dumpling. The best dishes here are not on the lunch deal, and again, anything with "tingling" or "numbing" is a sure fire winner. Rockville has so much good food it can be easy to overlook this place, but can confirm it's still excellent, years on. read more

I always considered anything that Peter Chang runs as one of the top for Asian food. However, a few months ago-- I had the misfortune of ordering carrying out food that was a total waste. I specifically asked the person on the phone about the spiciness of the hot and sour soup and she said it can be not spicy. I also told her than none of us can have spicy food. Two of the other things we ordered was so spicy that we couldn't eat it. It was so disappointing because we took the food to another couple's home and we couldn't eat anything except the white rice. The following day, at around noon, I called to complain and was told that it was too late for me to get refunded because I didn't call right away. I was told the soup is premade and is spicy! Not according to the order taker. She said, "she's new!" After complaining about this, the girl said she would do me a favor and replace whatever was spicy if I went to the restaurant that day.. which I wasn't going to do because the place is about 20 minutes away from us. Anyway, I ended the call saying that people who take orders should know their dishes well and that they should really take note of spice preferences when people SAY their preference. I definitely was disappointed by their response and don't think I will patronize Peter Chang in Rockville again! read more

Reading other negative reviews, I agree. Food quality was really bad and it's not cheap. Example pork buns is more buns than pork. Spring roll wins prize for smallest spring roll. Nothing seems fresh. Server was OK and she did her best. When you leave and can feel you may be feeling unwell, you know that's a sign not to return. Thanks Peter but no thanks. 2nd time ordering delivery just in case things changed in a few years. Won ton soup looks watered down & sparse wonton in it. But person eating it said it tasted good. Maybe some MSG? It was hot, so there is that! My chicken lo mein was so oily greasy that eating 1/4 of it caused GI upset. The chicken in it was very scant, and on par with the size of chow mein hard crunch noodles you can buy at the grocery store in the can. I am amazed they can get the chicken pieces so miniature. I've never had such an anemic low mein. Mostly onions in it. Ugh! Spouse's spicy Hunan chicken was too greasy & salty & didn't taste like Hunan chicken! Well to me find a true spicy food is hard as I had to add their red pepper sauce to my dish . But the food was really tasty . I had double cooked spicy pork belly and it was very well cooked with lots of flavor . I was immediately seated upon my arrival. Everyone is very polite and helpful . Truly some of the best Chinese food I've had in a longggg time!! We hosted my brother's Chinese banquet pre-wedding dinner here with our Chinese relatives & the dishes were incredible. I went to Peter Chang's in Rockville last night, and as usual, the food was delicious! The Dry-Fried eggplant really hit the spot. The flavors burst in your mouth but they aren't so overpoweringly spicy that you need to wipe the sweat off your face. (Just the way I like it!) We also had the shrimp with walnuts small plate order, which was tasty but perhaps a little too much sauce on it. (I prefer less sauce and should've mentioned it when ordering.) And for our main course, we had the Seafood Curry Stone Pot. This bubbling and boiling pot was loaded with curried fish, shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, and baby bok choy. I couldn't stop eating it. The ambience of this restaurant is good for groups and kids, although I came here on a date. The music was really good. They played all my favorite tunes, soulful classic songs. My absolute favorite dish was dry-fried eggplant; nothing comes close to its unique combination of spicy/savory powder, crispy crust, and tender interior.
