As a longtime fan of Big Wong in NYC, I'm honestly shocked it took me this long to start exploring some of the Cantonese options in the DMV. I think part of the reason is that I'm usually craving spicier dishes and stronger Sichuan or Southeast Asian flavor profiles. Recently, though, I've been in the mood for simple, comforting Cantonese food, so we decided to give New Paul Key a try. We stuck with some classics: beef chow fun, salt-and-pepper squid, and chicken and salted fish fried rice. I requested that the chow fun have a strong wok hei--that smoky, slightly charred flavor you get from cooking over very high heat. I always feel a little funny asking for this because it's my favorite part of the dish, but I never know whether the staff understands exactly what I mean or is secretly making fun of me. The waiter actually told me the chef didn't know what I was talking about, so they apparently just cooked the noodles longer. The flavor was good, but unfortunately, the dish was a little too greasy, and it didn't quite have the intense wok hei I was hoping for. The salt-and-pepper squid was very tasty, but we weren't big fans of the coating. It was much thicker and more reminiscent of the batter you might find on a sweet-and-sour dish than the lighter, crispier coating I was expecting from salt-and-pepper squid. The chicken and salted fish fried rice was tasty and probably my favorite of the three dishes. I did notice that the portions were smaller than I expected, especially for the price. I won't mention the shrimp egg rolls Overall, the meal wasn't bad at all, but it also didn't strike me as a must-visit Cantonese restaurant. I used to go to the old Paul Kee, so at first it was weird. I got over it and I enjoyed myself. The staff was attentive. The food was delicious was different. It was on a Saturday afternoon so it wasn't as busy around lunchtime, it was actually really quiet. The generous portions, and the familiar flavors made it very memorable. The only thing is there's a lot of items on the menu so I would suggest you view the menu before you sit down to order. I don't usually like to drive down to Wheaton area especially at night but this is one place I don't mind keep coming. They have the best Char-Siu (Hong Kong style BBQ pork) & all seafood are super fresh. I highly recommend the steamed garlic oysters, so succulent & delicious. Service is wonderful, both lady servers are attenuative & pleasant. Menu is big, with so many dishes that I want to try them all. The only thing less desirable is the parking, could be hard to find on weekends. All in all, my families love to come here for a decent meal, very authentic Cantonese cuisine. Paul Kee has been a staple for home style Chinese/Cantonese in the Wheaton area for many years. And under new management; this establishment has undergone a major facelift. The space has been upgraded and renovated to reveal a cleaner and brighter interior. The menu has been updated with new dishes but also keeping the tried-and-true dishes of the past. The food came out fast and piping hot and tasted great. The only complaint when it comes to the food was the crispy noodles with seafood was quite under seasoned. Service was attentive and friendly. Didn't take any photos since this was a last minute carry out order. This place has definitely changed inside and out for the better. The New Paul Kee interior has a nice modern looking vibe compared to the old furniture and style that was easily not missed from before. The construction scaffolding was still up on the outside so it will be a refreshing change to this long standing staple of Wheaton. I have been visiting this location for many years and although the owners may or may not have changed since the word "new" was added to the original name, the food was definitely delicious. This is one of the few restaurants in the area that serves Hong Kong style bbq meats and dishes, one of my favs. So I will definitely be coming back soon! read more

Hubs and I finally made it here for dinner and are glad we finally did. We are still smarting from the closure of our favorite Chinese in Wheaton so looking for more options when we don't have time to trek to Rockville. I think NPK will make it into the rotation. We tried pork & shrimp soup dumplings, spicy szechuan wontons, and *please don't judge* walnut shrimp. All were good. Walnut shrimp: The shrimps they use are large and good quality, perfectly cooked. The breading was just right. Large fresh broccoli. We don't get this one often but it was good. Usually we are team dumpling, so the other two dishes are more in line with our usual fare and we can compare these to many other places we go. The soup dumplings were very good, had sufficient flavor and a burst of broth in each. Theirs are green so maybe they use spinach flour? Not sure. The wontons were also good but very different flavor profile than I am used to for this dish. Less heat, more vinegar, a tiny touch of sweetness. All in all, they have a lot of other dishes I want to try that are outside what we usually get. I think I would come here when I am not specifically craving dumplings and wontons, not because I didn't like these - I did - but it is very hard to compete with Bob's and a couple other places for those dishes. But I would get the walnut shrimp again once in a while and I want to try the roast pork and some of the other delectable looking dishes I saw at other tables. Review may go up as I try a bigger variety. Service was good, prices were very fair. Restaurant was clean, bright, not cramped at all. A lot has changed in the DMV since I've moved away. Two presidents have come and gone. Both Monique and Candiace have departed the Real Housewives of Potomac. Even the Purple Line project has... just kidding nothing has changed there. Perhaps the most painful and shocking loss I felt was hearing about the steady decline and eventual closure of Paul Kee. It was a staple of my childhood all through my college years. Its dishes formed my palate when it comes to Cantonese cuisine, so much so that every "beef with sour cabbage" I've ever eaten subsequently is always compared to theirs (and always comes up short). Though the official word was that the restaurant would undergo renovations and reopen under new management, nobody knew what form it would take. Alas, the long anticipated wait is over and New Paul Kee has arrived, "there sits Balerion, come again." The interior has received a much needed overhaul, but the food has not lost any of its splendor. While the menu is pared down, it still includes the beloved roast duck, char siu, and crispy roast pork that made the original restaurant famous. There are also new and creative dishes like fish filet with sour cabbage over rice noodles and a refreshing, crunchy lotus root stir fry. In a random twist of fate, on the day I visited the old staff was also there for a reunion dinner. I probably first met some of these waitresses and cooks when I was just 5 years old. Now, 30 years later, every last person has left. I suppose it's sad that however much we love something, we can't stop it from slipping away. If I had my way, the original Paul Kee would be locked in time forever (let's bring back 1990's prices while we are at it). Things can't stay the same though. We all have to grow up and move on. The best we can do is hope that, if things have to change, they change for the better. As we were leaving, one of the old managers pointed me out, "You're old like us now. You're tall. After a change in ownership and much needed renovations, the same nostalgic Chinese flavors are revamped with new menu items at New Paul Kee! Service was typical of a Chinese restaurant and the ambiance was nice. We went on a weeknight, so it was quiet. We had a large party for a birthday and sometimes you can request them to cook off the menu items at Chinese restaurants or even bring your own ingredients and pay an upcharge to cook, so I'm not sure what's on the menu and what's off, but all of the food was fresh and flavors were good. I've walked by this place on a few occasions, but it took an invitation from a friend for me to finally enter the establishment. Overall, I thought the food here was pretty on point, and I did not have any complaints. While it was not the best Chinese/Cantonese food I've had, it definitely is up there especially for this area. I did like how most of the diners (in fact everyone except for our table of four) were of Asian descent. This observation tells me that New Paul Kee is a legit place for Chinese food. The restaurant has a HUGE menu of various dishes. However, if you have visited Chinese restaurants over the years, most of the menu items are things that you would have seen in other places. For my dining pleasure, I went with an order of the Hunan beef and steamed wontons. The Hunan beef was just ok (the beef was a little too tough for my liking), but the wontons were absolutely amazing. I thought the sauce for the wontons had just the right amount of rice vinegar for my liking. In fact, the wontons were so delicious that I almost considered placing another order to have later on. Most of the dishes are around 15 bucks, and you will receive a pretty generous helping of food. For instance, I was stuffed after having half portions of my wontons and human beef. Our servers were pretty nice, and the food comes out really fast. In fact, my main course came out before my appetizer. While this might be a faux pas for some folks, I don't really mind it...Hey, all of the food is going to the same place in my belly. The restaurant shares a small, free parking lot with a few other businesses. Although there is free parking, I think there is only about 10-15 spaces, so free parking may not be available. However, there is a county parking lot about 100 or so feet away. I think it cost me about two bucks to park in that lot for a couple of hours. I'm looking forward to trying more things on New Paul Kee's menu...especially after having a drink or five at the bars in that area. read more

They redid the old Paul Kee and did a very nice job. The menu is not the same but it is still very good and the place is finally clean. I moved to the area 20+ yrs ago and it was largely because we loved the food in the neighborhood like PK... I'm thrilled that they are back to a place I want to visit and I can't try the dumplings next time. We will be back! read more

We ordered here tonight to give it a try since our family's favorite spot was closed on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, to our surprise most of the dishes we ordered here were a miss. The ribs were over cooked and very fatty, the chow mein was flavorless, and the lo mein was pretty standard. Luckily, my sister's friend enjoyed their chicken wings and my mom thought her pork friend rice was pretty good as well. Additionally, I was surprised that for an order over $100 with soups, egg roll and multiple entrees there were so sauces, fortune cookies or even napkins packed. In comparison to a handful of other places we order from, that was also in stark contrast. Although disappointed, I'm grateful for the chefs that prepared our food on a holiday. Do you remember when Paul Kee used to open until 2:00AM? The carpet was grungy. The food was good. Service was average. The old menu is gone (no more squid with pickled vegetables) but they are well focused on the items they kept. Try the roasted combos. Can't find it as a dish anywhere else around here. Makes me feel like I'm back in Hong Kong. Love that it's clean (no more dirty carpets) and the service is friendly and prompt. Although I miss the late-late-night dinners at this place, overall this is a good compromise. Paul Kee has moved on to be the New Paul Kee. We should embrace that. read more

However, I'm glad this place is still open. We ordered several dishes from this spot from their beef brisket and their duck noodle soup. Good quality food. Also, the staff here are very friendly. The interior looks great. The exterior of the business can be tough especially at night with not much lighting. However, the food here is good. Since my favorite Chinese restaurant in Wheaton (and in the whole area) closed I have been looking for a new one, and this one is it. The salt and pepper squid, walnut shrimp, crispy beef, and ma po tofu are excellent. Pan-fried green beans were good but nothing special. The menu looks great; lots of dishes I'm looking forward to trying. The restaurant is very comfortable and the staff are friendly and competent. There are only a few free parking spots in front of the restaurant, but plenty of metered spots around. (I see other reviews mentioned a parking lot in back of the restaurant but I haven't checked that out). They also do a great job of preparing takeout orders. read more

This restaurant has a great Cantonese chef, a rarity in a small town like Wheaton. Almost every dish you order will be professionally cooked Cantonese style. Try any quick fryed beef dish and you will see what I mean by a great chef; beef will be tender yet firm in texture. It's been our favorite and we go there almost every week. read more

Shrimp eggrolls excellent, properly cooked, fresh ingredients, shrimp with garlic sauce again properly seasoned with just the right amount of sweetness, pork with snow peas classic version nice crispy fresh snow peas and last but not least, requested Gen Tzos shrimp which is not really on the menu and they were happy to do it. Spoke with staff and they said to talk to them next time to ensure there isn't an issue. That's nice of them. Food is authentic after going through the course. I like how the seafood portions were and we were take of when we brought things up. Little things had to be taken care of like napkins, rice, tea. Overall food is good and it's a nice experience just understand they may not be too attentive unless requested. Bad service and food meat is rotten. On Saturday dinner time the restaurant look empty

We had the food delivered through Door Dash. We ordered a large wonton soup. It was too salty! The 6 wontons were more like shrimp dumplings and were on the side. The egg rolls we ordered had only vegetables, we ordered them with meat! The shrimp egg foo young was the only redeeming part! The total bill was over $46! It cost $16 for delivery,taxes, and an $8 tip charge! No condiments were included! Only 3 miles from my home! I never knew that a tip was included! I assumed that the tip was optional! Went there around 4pm 4/25/2025 and both my buddy and I got orange chicken and a side of egg rolls. Had to send back one plate of the rolls because it tasted and smelled rancid. Then after having that comped, box up what's left and leave. I find a maggot with white fuzz around it on the broccoli when I try to finish the leftovers for dinner. Threw up everything. The New Paul Kee is even more delicious than before. Overall, the food came out piping hot, and well seasoned. Ordered: - Spicy beef tendon appetizer - thinly sliced beef tendon with strips of green onion and roasted peanuts in hot oil and spicy Szechuan peppercorn sauce. Tendons were a little bit too firm but the flavor was good. - Cuttlefish with pickled julienne daikon and carrot appetizer - could have been served with a soy sauce and five spice mix, but we made our own fresh hot pepper and soy sauce mixture to dip into so it worked out. - Deep fried seafood (shrimp, squid, scallop) - crispy light batter. Jalapeño, green onion and just the right amount of seasoning. - Duck blood w/ ginger and scallion - it was a silky, jello-like delight, - Sour cabbage w/ fish filet - sweet and sour flavors paired perfectly w/ the white fish. - Beef lo mein - deliciously smokey wok flavor and perfectly seasoned.
