Excellent authentic Chinese in an area close to the county recycling center. Restaurant is quite big (with some private rooms to the side) and I think the business is still quite new. Everything was clean and had nice Chinese-style decor. As usual, I ordered mapo tofu and a hot and sour soup when trying a new Szechuan restaurant. The soup was excellent and came in a large portion bowl. The tofu came with minced pork (it can also be ordered without the pork) and it was delicious. They told me it wasn't usually that spicy so I asked for it to be as spicy as their regular spicy dishes. When it came out, it had excellent heat and my lips are still a bit tingly. Overall, a large Szechuan restaurant in this area that's worth a visit. Of course, authentic Chinese in this area is already crowded, but this one deserves some foot traffic love as well. read more

Back with some friends and got some tried and true dishes plus a couple of new ones. We were a little disappointed in the honey chicken this time around. It tasted like it was double fried and the first time we had it it was fried but more moist. I hope it was a one off and not a permanent change. I am hesitant to order it again. The new things we tried: Scallion pancake - 4.5* delicious and crispy and fluffy and wonderful! My in-laws brought us to Yi Pin for lunar new year this past year and despite feeling a bit tired, I remember the food being exceptionally good and lamenting not having been able to eat more of it. This is a great place to get a great Chinese meal that nails it on both ambience+presentation as well as taste+authenticity. + The interior features tables in little alcoves a step above the main floor with a lot of traditional Chinese inspired woodwork + Some memorable dishes we've gotten here include: ++ Hong Kong style pork rib is the dish I most associate with Yi Pin actually because I don't think I've had something like this anywhere else before and wasn't expecting it here at this restaurant that mainly serves Chongqing-style food. It comes out with an extremely generous amount of garlicky breadcrumbs? atop this pile of ribs with a great color on them and the flavor and texture were exactly what I wanted, which was just so pleasant of a surprise as I think I was expecting to be disappointed by these. Not so, we get these every time we visit and they're a hit every time ++ Pan Long Eggplant, where the "Pan Long" refers to the presentation: plate dragon. Very tasty and great for everyone's parents to take photos of ++ Scallion pancake is such a basic dish but unfortunately a lot of area restaurants don't execute it well? Yi Pin is one of the few places we've visited that delivers a nice crispy pancake ++ Pig feet and bean soup is one of the dishes that tells me a restaurant is not shying away from traditional dishes to cater to a less adventurous customer, and Yi Pin has plenty of dishes on their menu in this vein. The food was delicious here. I liked that we can also ask for the foods to be less spicy. -The shredded chicken with scallion oil was perfect for kids. The chicken was soft and tasty and seasoned nicely with the scallion oil. -The sweet and sour squirrel fish was also a favorite. I liked how there was no bones for the fish body so also perfect for kids, elderly, or people who have a hard time picking out bones from fish. -The mapo tofu was also good. We asked for less spicy so the kids were able to eat it too. The beef cooked with the tofu was very soft as well. This is the perfect dish to eat with rice. -The lettuce with garlic was nice and crispy and seasoned well -The Hong Kong style pork rib had a decent amount of meat. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I kept passing this place and this place used to be called "Wang Manor" for years without coming in. This time, we just wanted to try something new and something different. Well, we tried a lot of similar cuisine in the area, but another iteration. The spice level is pretty strong. The amount of aromatics like garlic was stronger than most places. That fried fish with cumin was like the tilapia version of La zi ji and I have to say it was really good. The fish pieces were large and the fish was double fried so it had a strong crunch. The inside was pretty unique and fun to be in. The inside would need a bit of cleaning up and refreshing though as it is the same interior as "Wang Manor" based on the past photos. The parking lot is plenty for this restaurant. I guess it can get full on high times though as there is a sign not to park in front of the other businesses. The service here was good. They kept checking in, giving additional napkins and helped put our leftovers to go and wrapping it all up. I would have to come back to keep trying it out. My friends wanted good Chinese food while they were in town, so we went to Yi Pin this past Friday (as suggested by a Sichuanese friend who has high standards for Chinese cuisine). We loved the modern take of the traditional Chinese wooden design decorated throughout the restaurant. My only complaint is that the chairs were also made with hard wood, which was a bit uncomfortable to sit on for the entire duration of lunch. DOUBLE COOKED PORK BELLY 家乡回锅肉 - 17.95 This is a Sichuan classic that all of us were familiar with. The pork belly were sliced very thinly and flavorful from all the spices and chili oils used to cook it. There wasn't a whole lot of pork, as it is also wok-fried with other toppings like firm tofu, peppers, green onions, etc. Overall, this was a great start to lunch. SQUIRREL FISH (SEA BASS W. SWEET & SOUR SAUCE) 松鼠鱼(鲈鱼) - 39.95 Most of my friends haven't had squirrel fish before, so I insisted that we had to get it. The entree is on the higher end for the amount you get, but the fish was tender with a crispy, saucy layer that was topped with the slightly sweet, buttery flavors of pine nuts. The sweet and sour sauce was good, which we used to enjoy our rice. We made sure no pine nut was left behind because they're expensive. The squirrel fish ended up being most of our favorite entree out of the four. SNOW PEA SHOOTS & PRESERVED EGG IN CHICKEN BROTH 上汤豆苗(咸鲜味) - 16.95 The was a good non-spicy and lighter option to mellow out all the flavors and spices that were in every other dish. The pea shoots were cooked perfectly, and the chicken broth was on the thicker side, almost like a glze. The preserved eggs were a nice touch to add savory and bold umami flavors to the vegetables. Sadly, it's only part of their monthly specials, so it's not always on their menu. CUMIN FLAVOR BEEF CUBES & POTATOES 孜然土豆牛肉粒(孜然味) - 18.95 The numbing heat on this dish was crazy. The potatoes were perfectly stir-fried and not as spicy. The beef really put the "ma" in the mala with its deep, numbing flavor that made us inhale and exhale loudly during our meal. Again, this one is also part of their monthly specials, but I hope to see it again next time. The food was so delicious, and we were so hungry that we destroyed all four entrees within 30 minutes. For years, I've driven by this large, red building off of Frederick Rd in its different iterations of Asian cuisine, and never stopped in. It looked odd and I guess I assumed the inside would be dingy with ok food. In this iteration, I was wrong. I came here for lunch today. It's fantastic Sichuan Chinese food. When I was seated, the Staff put a large pitcher of iced water with lemon on the table. Menus were also on the table, but nothing spoke of lunch specials. I asked the server and he brought me a lunch menu. All items on the lunch menu are $11.95, and come with plain/vegetable fried rice, and choice of egg drop soup, hot and sour soup or spring roll. The hot and sour soup was excellent. The broth was spicy and the extra large portion was filled with bamboo shoots and other traditional hot and sour ingredients. It was super good and filling. I got the kung pao chicken with vegi fried rice. I found the entree to be spicy, but not overpowering. The dish had broccoli, peppers and peas. The rice was well prepared (I didn't notice any hard/undercooked rice pieces.) The inside of the restaurant is very attractive with traditional old-school Chinese restaurant vibe. I'm sorry I assumed all these years that the inside would be old and shabby. It's a really nice place inside with a nice vibe. Hard to judge a place just by a lunch special, but I'm going all in at 5 stars. If I come back and have a different view with dinner, I'll let you know. Note: i wrote this after completing my review above based on lunch. I took half of the entree home because the soup was so filling. When I ate the remainder tonight, I saw and tasted large pieces of ginger in the entree. For some reason, I didn't get that at lunch today. Anyway, the ginger was overpowering and actually made the leftovers disappointing. Strange that this wasn't an issue at lunch, but made the leftovers a real disappointment. Our favorite were the pig trotter soup, beef and tofu stew, and the Chinese-style Kung pao chicken. All protein was perfectly tender, Szechuan spices were fragrant but not too numbing, and everything was super flavorful! Surprisingly attentive service. The waiters would always make sure our water was filled and that we had enough napkins. Only complaint is that all the chairs in the restaurant were really uncomfortable. We were seated quickly at our table and the waitress was great with recommending dishes based off our preferences. After the order was in a ran to the restroom to wash my hands. Upon my return the first dishes started coming out. Everything was really good. The chef did an amazing job with flavor and presentation of the dishes. Think gourmet Szechuan. Yeah, they have some American Chinese dishes on the menu. However, if you are a "general tso, orange chicken, and fried rice" type. A Szechuan spicy food haven for spicy food lovers that really hits the spot. The fancy rosewood traditional decor is appealing and sets the tone for a traditional feast. Plenty of parking in the easy to miss if you pass by strip mall, that is unassuming and overlooked because of the way the entrance is located. Went there for my mom's birthday lunch. Decor is nice. Only time will tell if they keep it in good shape. I didn't give them 5 stars because of their service. They are attentive while you order (a thumbs down for no greens in the noodles and it came with greens) and during food arrival, but once your table receives everything, the staff are no where to be found. You have to go find someone for water/tea refills or if you need anything else. Then one of the staff came during the meal and mumbled something, causing confusion with everyone. Why they were there, I assume, is to check if we got a certain dish. All they had to do was look and go or ask clearly. No need to say anything no one understood. Can't find a good hot & sour soup place these days, but I think this is it. I've only been there once, so I'll have to try it again soon to see if they're consistent. The predecessor always said the soup is only good if you eat there. Wrong. Places either add too much vinegar or too much hot sauce/pepper. Plus, leaving garnishes out. I like their soup bowls/cups. The metal inside keeps the soup nice and hot/warm. Be careful since it can burn the roof of your mouth. FYI - They auto add gratuity if your party is 5 or more. read more

First time dining here on a Saturday for lunch. We had a large group so we were seated in one of the semi-private rooms with 4 tables. We had 2 of the 4 tables. Service is ok, they don't really check on you after you order. Food comes out but oddly it kind of came out backwards. We are used to having the dumplings and scallion pancakes first, since they are appetizers, but the dumplings all came at the very end. Food is ok, not super awesome but not bad either. The ambiance is kind of cute with Chinese themed booths. It wasn't super busy, there definitely wasn't a line or a wait. The menu is pretty overwhelming for a newbie. There are tons of pages and options but kind of in weird categories. Portions are smaller than I would have expected for a Chinese restaurant with a large group. The first question the waiter asked was how many people. I thought maybe they would adjust portions but they did not. Xiao long bao were decent. Soupy. Pan fried dumplings were huge compared to others we've had before. The numbing spice is not something I'm a fan of, and neither were the kids we had at our table. It didn't burn, it was really just numbing in a weird way. They looked at our table multiple times to see if we were done but didn't do much pre-bussing of the tables, even when we were just sitting around. No fortune cookies or orange slices at the end either, I guess they don't do that sort of thing anymore? I don't typically dine out at Chinese restaurants so maybe times have just changed. Since it's newly opened, I went there twice for Friday dinner and Saturday dinner to try different dishes. Unfortunately, both meals were a bit disappointing. The sweet and sour fish (松鼠鱼）is a popular dish here but the quality of the fish is questionable. Beer Marinated Duck was a total failure as there were very few small pieces duck in the dish and it's soupy. Appetizers were ok but not outstanding. Had to go back to try more dishes but was told they ran out of chicken soup (虫草花鸡汤），pork belly (梅菜扣肉）, and pork ribs. Ordered steamed fish and beef which turned out to be too salty. Very disappointing. Friday night service was fast but Saturday night service was super slow. A meal for two took us 2.5 hours. The place is big and can accommodate big groups but because of that, it's a bit noisy. Overall, based on my two dinner dining experience, I am very unlikely to go back. read more

I ordered the 老妈猪蹄汤 (Pork Hock Soup) and the 豆花牛肉 (Braised Beef with Tofu) to go. The soup was $11 and the beef dish was $19. Here's my review of the two to-go dishes after an hour drive. So I picked up the dishes at about 11:40 and I ate them at about 12:40 due to traffic. The dishes were still great! The soup was an absolute banger. The pork hock was tender and the seasoning in the soup was spot on. The price for the portion was too good to be true! The beef with tofu had an excellent mix of heat, numbing peppercorn, and other spices. The slightly chewy texture of the beef combined with the silky texture of the tofu was superb. We stumbled on this new Chinese restaurant near the shady grove metro and were surprised at how delicious and flavorful everything was. The string beans and minced pork combo really hit the spot (I haven't found that combo anywhere else nearby) and the string beans had a really nice crisp which I love (not soggy at all). The fried fish fillet had excellent salt and pepper taste - the flakes sprinkled on were so good and added extra crispness and flavor. My fiancé enjoyed the chicken offal which came with a heating element to keep it hot. Service was friendly and fast. The interior is reminiscent of a majestic inn from a Hong Kong kung fu movie. The food is amazing. Powerful flavors. Asked for Double Cooked Pork Belly extra spicy. With white rice, this meal will open your eyes wide. Green beans were tasty and a wonderful vegetarian meal if you get it without minced pork. Some of the dishes we got were the twice cooked pork belly, mapo tofu with minced meat, and the egg plant (if you looked at the pictures it's the spiral one) to name a few. We had to wait for a long time for a server to walk by and get our order, the tea and water were never refilled until we asked for them to be. More importantly, the server was visibly rude when we ordered food and just assumed that we wouldn't order enough food because of the young kids at the table. Which turned out to be wildly untrue (we ordered an average of 2-3 dishes per adult). If the restaurant is so unwelcoming of families, they should've stated it up front. No one came to clean up the finished dishes either. Until the service improves, we will not be coming back. read more

Very easy to get to (right near the solid waste transfer station off of Shady Grove Road), but parking can be a challenge. I ordered their general tsos chicken lunch special which included vegetable fried rice and hot and sour soup. Let's start with the soup. This has to be one of the best hot and sour soups I've had in the DMV. It had all of my favorites: woodear, bamboo shoots, tofu, in an extremely complex broth with strong ginger overtones, and fortunately not very heavy on soy sauce. It was quite spicy, but enjoyably so. It wasn't heat for the sake of heat. It was heat with flavor. Very, very well executed The vegetable fried rice was also probably as complex as one could make it, since it's a very simple dish. The rice was not overly saturated with soy sauce as many preparations are but just had the right amount. It had snow peas, carrots, peas, and broccoli all mixed in with a fluffy rice. There was a distinct ginger taste also in the rice. It was very good. The General Tsos chicken was all white meat, perfectly uniform cuts that were bite-size, with a very subtle fry, with the sauce that was not cloyingly sweet but flavorful with ginger, Szechuan pepper, corn, and other spices. I was disappointed after seeing so many highly rated reviews. The broccoli accompanying the garlic pork ribs was cold as in from the refrigerator cold. There was no sauce on the ribs and they were dry and bland, but at least they were hot. The steamed pork dumplings were hot, but the soy sauce was nothing special and the dough on the dumplings was starchy and stiff, not melt in your mouth soft. The rice was lukewarm. The broccoli was at least fresh, not from a can or frozen. The sticky rice dessert was awful. It was like eating uncooked dough with brown sugar sprinkled on it. The ambiance was nice, though. It looked like a Chinese pagoda inside. You didn't get one server, but there were multiple servers who checked in on you, who were efficient. read more
