I have been coming to Golden House for years since before they moved within Silver Spring. Ive driven from Ellicott City, Olney and even DC to pick up my carry out. Highly disappointed today with my beef and broccoli and the rest of the order. The taste was terrible. No flavor and it's just not the same food. (I come here once a month) I'm not sure if it's an off day but the place wasn't busy so I can't see how you'd fumble the ball. I definitely won't be coming back. I have ordered take out from here twice in a week and it's been great. They have a healthy menu, and so many options, even for vegetarians! The price is also great. The food lasts me for three meals as well. I've gotten the spicy eggplant in garlic sauce and eggplant and tofu in garlic sauce. It can be oily but it's oh so good - some times you just have to indulge. There was recent discussion on a Takoma Park Facebook page that recommended Chinese restaurants and Golden House had two comments of support. My husband and I were interested in finding a place closer to Takoma Park as our regular go-to Chinese restaurant. We ordered a variety of items that are always "tells" about how good a Chinese restaurant is - dumplings, Chow Fun (rice noodles), Kung Pao (we had shrimp), and vegetables with protein (we had chicken). The dumplings were simply big hunks of dough. I took one bite and spit it out. The rest of the food tasted as if it had been made several days ago and reheated. We threw the whole dinner out except for the white rice which I will give to my dog. read more

A Love Letter to Golden House: After first moving to Silver Spring, I went through a spell where I was weak in the knees for Golden House: I could regularly convince myself to order golden house delivery multiple times a week. I freaking love their many vegetarian and vegan options. I've ordered many of their vegan options: orange chicken, mango chicken, hunan, mongolian, General Tso's, Curry veg, love their meals are chock full of veggies, many vegetable sides you can order, like asparagus and steamed vegetables. There are different kinds of vegetarian "meat"- chicken, shrimp, beef. And "bean curd"- which surprised me by how delicious it is. Even one kind of "meat" can also vary dish by dish. For example, veg chicken is different with General Tso's and Curry chicken. "General Tso's chicken"uses dense chunks, but flat slices for Curry veg chicken. I've never liked seafood, so I haven't tried their veg shrimp, but I'd love to see someone's review it and maybe one day, I'll have the courage. Golden House's veg orange chicken is extremely satisfying, but I will admit Mandarin Restaurant, which is maybe two blocks away has the BEST. Golden House's Orange chicken are basically naked dense chunks. Manadarin's vegetarian Orange chicken are breaded and fried and have a texture that is very similar to chicken. However, despite Mandarin's better orange veg chicken, it is served only with rice. Not a vegetable in sight. The menu also doesn't have vegetable side options. So, it feels like a junk food splurge when all I want is veg. orange chicken. For this reason, I prefer Golden House's veg chicken. It is satisfying, but it comes in a plastic serving bowl that is also colorful with many vegetables and you have the option of brown rice. You can also order vegetable sides, like asparagus or steamed vegetables. It feels healthier, more veggie friendly, and more like a complete and satisfying meal- not just a stuff-your-face junk food binge. Oh one more awesome thing about Golden House- it's always delivered on time, if not sooner than estimates. And it is perfectly scrumptiously hot. While I live very close, other nearby restaurants have let me down on these two critical aspects. Welp, I've just convinced myself into ordering Golden House for dinner tonight. Not my favorite. Ordered sesame chicken but it wasn't crispy and there was a lot of extra dough inside and it also wasn't white meat so there was fat and gristle to eat around. The lemon chicken I ordered looked similarly fried and the sauce looked very gelatinous and nasty so I didn't eat it. The wonton soup was ok but kinda greasy. I don't usually like to eat veggies with my rice unless it is the same consistency but the carrots, broccoli, snap peas, & green peppers were freshly crunchy, not too much though, while the cucumbers, mushrooms and onions were tender. I am extremely unhappy with the delivery person who delivered my food today. I am a customer of almost 3 years. Golden house is my local Chinese Food go to location. I have spent hundreds of dollars with them. I think today is my last day. The food is good. I have no complaints there. And good food; really is what at a minimum I should expect from a restaurant. Especially if it is open right. Customer service is always something that I have found to be the thing that separates businesses. No matter how much I spend. I would like to be treated with courtesy. I barely got that in person at Golden House when I picked up food in person before the Covid crisis. And I ordered food online today. Boy, this time I have had it. I was inveigled, wheedled, and harassed about tipping the delivery guy. I am so over this place. Thanks but no thanks. There are many other options. read more

After receiving their menu in the mail I was curious to try this place because it's the only place I've seen that serves Kung Pao Shrimp besides PF Chang's. Also, the cover of the menu states "Organic", but I am not really sure that can be backed up. They also have a shared parking lot, so it is easy to get take out in a hurry. The dining room atmosphere is very much to look at. There was a couple dining in, but most of the lunch time folks, like me, were getting their food to go. I ordered a pint of the Kung Pao Shrimp and didn't have to wait very long. I live nearby and made a quick stop at Rite Aid on the way home. Upon arrival my food was still hot - nice! Well, I'd have to say that I still like PF Chang's better. The shrimp sauce was spicy enough to make my nose run, but I and sort of a purist. I don't like a lot of chopped celery and carrots in my food. There were about seven large shrimps though. I probably won't order that again. Shrimp with cashews is always my standby. The ladies at the counter aren't the most congenial. Don't try to ask them any questions about the menu. Just order off the expansive menu and be on your way. read more

I have never before had crispy spicy beef that was so soggy, and the chicken fried rice contained no vegetables beyond onions and didn't seem to contain any eggs. Those are just two examples; we ordered seven different items, none of which were enjoyable. I think this may be the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Ordered online (super convenient! I hate talking on the phone.) on a Saturday evening (while it was snowing) and the delivery estimate was 45-65 minutes. It made it in 60 minutes. Pretty great considering how terrible the road conditions were. (We had originally planned to go out for sushi, but the minute we left the parking lot we went sliding on the ice and decided to stay and order takeaway instead.) We ordered fried wontons, shrimp toast, egg drop soup, hot and sour soup, sweet and sour chicken combo plate with fried rice and eggroll, and kung pao chicken combo plate with fried rice and eggroll. (Yes, we have enough for lunch and possibly another dinner) Everything was very good, better than any other place we've had Chinese food at in Silver Spring yet. The eggrolls had a different texture that was crispy and I really enjoyed. None of our appetizers were overly oily or greasy, which I really appreciated. Our soups were flavorful (the hot and sour had great balance of heat and sweet) and the consistency was perfect. It's hard to find egg drop soup that isn't gloopy, and this one was perfect. Bonus that it came with packages (pre-packaged, not fresh made) of little crispy fried wonton strips. The pork fried rice was flavorful, and actually had chunks of bbq pork in it (unlike most places we order from). The sweet and sour chicken was great. Almost every time I order it from other places, the chicken is dry and overcooked. This was not the case here! Husband was also very happy with his kung pao chicken. Wow. Just...wow. I am the self-proclaimed official Yelp Chinese Carryout Connoisseur. I went to this place because I couldn't bring myself to eat one of the hot dogs from the Kwik-E-Mart (7-Eleven) next door. Even though there's some unwritten law that requires all chinese food places to take on one of eight names (Yum's, Golden House, Dannys, etc), this place actually lives up to its name. Granted, I only had the wings with fried rice, I still give them four stars for the execution. At first glance, the rice looked like the usual bland food court rice from the mall. Then the Food Network wanna-be came out of me. "These cuts of carrot...they aren't uniform. Neither are the onions. Wait a minute. Someone did this by hand!" By George, this wasn't prepackaged mixed vegetables thrown in like the crap at the mall. Someone made this stuff themselves. Like Robert Frost once said, "And that has made all the difference." I've been getting delivery and eating in this restaurant for a few years. Overall I was satisfied with it, and even recommended it as a delivery option for a while. But on a recent visit there was no soap in the bathroom when I went to wash my hands. The restaurant staff seemed surprised I would want soap to wash my hands and brought me a grimy bottle of dish soap that looked like it had been sitting around on a shelf for a few years. The bathroom and restaurant also increasingly have a grimy appearance, a fact I've ignored in the past but this time it got to me. After taking all this in and seeing other reviews (including a roach found in a recent delivery order) I'm thinking I might be done with Golden House. read more

It was not as good as I expected. I went to get my hair done on Georgia Ave and a few of the stylists said Golden House won best General Tsao's out of restaurants in the DC area, some award. I decided to come back and try it. We ordered: Crab Rangoons (3 stars) - too sweet in the center compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area, I did not enjoy them as much and would not order them again General Tsaos - 3.5 stars, it wasn't too special, it was edible, but not anything to give an award out. Chicken Pad Thai - I know its a Chinese restaurant but we were curious - 2 stars, not at all like Pad Thai, flavorless and blah (get Pad Thai at Charm Thai down the block) Fried Rice (3 stars) I have had better Chinese takeout in this area. I prefer the Dim Sum restaurant next to the Giant and the Caribou coffee place much more. read more

We called it Bad East Coast Chinese Food #BECCF way back when. It was that take-out/delivery Chinese food from the hole-in-the-wall take-out place that had the old van seat opposite the counter for customers to use while they waited for their order to be finished. Golden House was the best in the area. Period. 20+ years seems to have taken a toll (and a couple stars) from the experience Golden House provided its customers. Sadness. :*-( The current location for the restaurant is better than what they had before at the intersection of Fenton & Wayne. They have tables and matching seats where customers can sit down and eat. There is a lot more traffic on Georgia Avenue, so the greater visibility should add to the flow of customers. The parking lot is actually paved: Bonus! Unfortunately, it's a shared parking lot, so the Seven-Eleven and Enterprise Rental cars and customers take up most of the space. Or, maybe it's the consulate down the side street. Maybe it's the corset store across the side street. Not sure, but if you drive to this location you may need to search for a parking space. The food is mostly Blah. There was an extra greasy feeling. Not the normal greasy feeling one might have grown up loving. No, it's the adult, what did I just swallow, greasy feel. The flavors seemed to be absent or buried. Either way, it left a lot to be desired. I'll give them some time and come back for another try, for now though I will not be able to walk away smiling. read more

I USE TO LOVE GOLDEN HOUSE. This carryout was my family's go to Chinese carryout. Last night I ordered a small shrimp fried rice. Half way through my meal I discovered a long strand of black hair (I have medium sized locs). I called Golden House to inform them and they were very understanding, apologized and delivered my meal again in like 30 minutes. I decided to have it for lunch today and guess what..ANOTHER STRAND OF LONG BLACK HAIR. How does someone mess up twice? Either way, I'm done with this place now. Dag it! read more
