I recently picked up a small Lemon cake and a Strawberry cake from Morning My Day in Silver Spring. I was expecting a decent dessert; I wasn't expecting to be reminded that most other bakeries have been lying to us for years. The first bite was a bit of a shock to the system. It's one of those rare "Ratatouille moments" where a flavor profile manages to bridge the gap between Maryland and the legendary sponge cakes of Phoenix Bakery in LA. I came to try this bakery after seeing it promoted on Instagram as an authentic Asian-style bakery. I miss the Japanese bakeries I would frequent often when living in Japan a few years ago, and this one definitely brought back those memories. The interior is cute and on display were a variety of Asian-style baked goods and some minimal seating. The couple who runs the store seemed busy but rang me up relatively quickly. I got the ube twist and melon pan. The ube twist was really delicious -- I'd highly recommend it. The melon pan was disappointing; I expect a crunchy cookie crust on melon pan and this one was sticky and soft. The bread itself was super plush and soft and amazing, so it would be great if they could improve upon it with a crunchier cookie crust. The bread items were $3-4 each, so not the cheapest, but I was happy to support a local Asian bakery. read more

I've stopped by this tiny bakery twice now! The first time I got a mochi and red bean bun, which was pretty good - soft bread with a comforting filling. The cheese and pork sung bun I had this last time didn't really have any flavor - normally pork sung is really flavorful, so I was surprised. It was also a bit dry. However, I like the space and the range of offerings. I don't know that I would get a bun again, but I'm very curious about the milk tea! Staff is very nice and the prices are reasonable. Fresh and delicious breads and sweets. It is small, friendly, priced right, convenient walk from all downtown SS area. Go early to get the whole array. But: It is a hidden treasure in downtown Silver Spring. Why? I've been here for 15 years and have always scoped out Japanese bakeries-- I am a huge fan. It never popped up in my searches. I've been here three times and I have always loved this place! The family running this place has always been nice and friendly. I always get an ube cream filled bun here and the cream is always so tasty and fresh! Some of their other sweet pastries and baked good here are also good. I've never really had their salty items though. Their milk teas have always been a good balance of tea flavour and other flavours. Place is small but cute. I think everything's priced well too. This coffee shop is the epitome of cute and quaint. The shop owner was wonderful and asked for clarification on both our drink orders to ensure they were what we wanted. They had dairy free alternatives for some of my favorites, such as milk teas and, of course, coffees and lattes. They had plenty of pastry options available and lots of direct sunlight. They did have some tables inside, but there wasn't too much seating, so this may be more of a grab and go sort of place. Overall a 10/10 in my eyes. read more

I came here after a visit on a weekday lunch to the nearby Smithsonian Zoo after seeing this place on social media. You can find metered street parking on the same street this is located on. This place is tiny; expect to get your food to-go, there's about 2-3 tables inside. The baked goods are freshly made and I could see them being made as I came in. Matcha flower bun 2.5/5, the bread is soft and doughy but there's v limited matcha flavor Mochi red bean leaf bread 5/5, lot of red bean present and mochi is soft, v pleasant to eat Purple yam flower bun 3/5, I slightly preferred this to the matcha flower bun Japanese matcha milk tea (hot) 3/5, this normally comes cold but I asked if the could make it hot which was nice of them. read more

I recently discovered nomtastickim on Instagram and her Asian restaurant reviews. I don't like American food, but I've liked everything I've eaten after seeing her Asian restaurant reviews. I picked up three items this morning at Morning My Day. The choices were plentiful and tempting. A coconut braid-not too sweet, just perfect for early morning with coffee or tea, a curry pork sung bread that was absolutely hands down delish-heated it in the oven for 5 minutes and ate it with hot sauce, and a purple yam flower bun-delicious but know that the bread consistency might not be what you're used to? It's a very moist dense dough. The lady had a genuinely welcoming smile. The shop was easy to find. I found parking quickly. There is one table, maybe two. It's more of a carry-out place. I really wanted to like this place and even skipped going to a solid milk tea place like Kung Fu tea to try this place out but sadly this place did not live up to standard expectation for me. The woman working was very nice, however, it didn't make up for the underwhelming milk tea I ordered. I chose a Hokkaido style milk tea with boba and asked for low sugar. My order came up quickly. Milk tea tasted like it was made from powder and just too sweet for me, even at 30%. Boba was good, fresh and chewy. We love this little bakery! We honestly have come here every week - one day we came twice because we wanted the pork sung bread bun for our toddler. Adorable place! I stopped in after getting a haircut next-door and figured I should check this place out. It's a tiny little corner shop located off Georgia Avenue. When you walk in, they have cute little smiley faces on everything and the case of baked goods and a large menu for teas and coffees. Since it was national Boba day, I went ahead and got a black milk, Boba tea, which was great. I also went a little bit crazy with the baked goods and the pork bun, the hotdog bun, a mini cake which was mango, a chocolate espresso cake, and an Oreo cake. I added one of each macaron for good measure. The service was very friendly and I got things wrapped up and little smiley face bags, which were so freaking cute. When I got home, we pretty much liked everything we tried, but I have to say the pork bun was really good and I'm not sure how to describe it other than the pork was , dry in a good way inside, so not like a wet sauce char su bun. My Husband enjoyed the hotdog roll. What the macaroons were gone within a second with having a toddler around. I did manage to taste one of the macaroons and believe me this actually would be what I would drive back there for alone. So soft and the caramel flavor was excellent. They are tiny and bite size and about $1.99 each. The cake slices were delicious with great icing but I am definitely in love with the savory options here. Forward to coming back! read more

Cute Asian bakery shop! They opened about a year and a half ago and it looks like a husband and wife run the shop themselves. All of the Lego and art pieces are made by their son, which is so cute!!! I highly recommend the taro bread and black sesame mochi bread. They are not too sweet for my Asian taste buds and the bread is perfectly soft and fluffy. I also ordered the rose garden fruit tea with pearls and it tastes exactly the way it should. Definitely a hidden gem! read more

I ordered a custom birthday and it completely surpassed all my expectations. I've never tried a basque cheesecake before, let alone an ube one, but this was so delicious; the frosting was so light and the texture was amazing! I've been there twice and each time got a bun and a yogurt drink. The mango dragonfruit yogurt drink is where it's at. SO GOOD. I also really like the red bean bun. I also had the red bean paste bun, but there's actually more bean in the red bean bun so I'd stick with that. Many other desserts and drinks also sound good but I've only been in the evening when I'm doing non-caffeinated drinks. I think I like the drinks here better than Sweeteria, but from a desserts POV there are great picks from both that don't overlap so will keep both in my Friday night dessert rotation. read more

Love this place! So nice to have an Asian bakery nearby. The, I think, wife and husband team are quiet and courteous. Always busy making more delicious treats. Fruit sandwiches are such a treat! I always take a full loaf of milk bread home when they have it. I have to say the egg salad sandwich is just perfect! My daughter and I shared 1/2 sandwich the other day and regretted not getting another. Do wish they had more savory options. My toddler loves all the kid-art hanging up and the baker family curtain. I've only gotten one milk tea which was just ok, but that was when they first opened. It's hard not to get one of each thing to take home and share. Love the ube ring and black sesame mochi roll. If you want to get a taste of Japan baking there's no better place in the area! They have melon buns, red bean buns, and their milk teas are fantastic! This will be my main stop for when I want to treat myself or someone else! The service was very good, just know the milk teas can take a moment to make but they are very much worth it. The red bean bun I ordered was like I had gotten it from a bakery in Japan and if you have interest in them... absolutely give it a try! The vibe of the place was relaxed and cozy, with a lot of artwork done by their young son. I couldn't help but smile and look forward to bringing my own son there for a treat. This was a delicious stop in DTSS. We had a very tasty taro milk tea. I requested they make this half sweet and it was very pleasant to sip on without the overly sweet tang that taro drinks can sometimes have. I also want to comment that the teas were freshly brewed and I love this as many places will just batch brew. Foods I'm a red bean bun aficionado and this one DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The filling was smooth, the bread fluffy and it wasn't greasy or soggy to the touch. Ranking this pretty high on the red bean bun list. We also tried a curry pork sung bread which was also pleasant to eat - imagine tasty curry pork floss filling. We also had a black sesame mochi bread which was packed full of sesame flavor. Other bread/pastry flavor offerings included matcha, coconut, garlic (this looked amazing), along with the iconic hot dog bread.
