The mango lava cake was delish. Super light, fresh, and not overly sweet. I also loved the milk tea with panna cotta. The silky pudding texture in the milk tea is SO good and makes the whole drink even better. Portuguese egg tart was a little too eggy and buttery for me. Felt really heavy - wish it was a bit more caramelized or custardy. Seems really popular though, everyone who came into the shop left with some egg tarts lol. The interior only has very few tables and seats, so it's not really the kind of place I'd sit and hang out for a while. I think most people just grab their desserts to go. There's also a parking lot in the back with plenty of spots, which is nice. My only con is their hours and availability. I went around 2 p.m. (they open at noon), and they only had three desserts available from their whole menu. I was looking forward to getting a whole haul, so that was kind of a bummer. A very small hidden gem in the Kentlands! It was worth the trip to visit if you like Hong Kong Style Bakeries or just another sweet place to mark off your bucket list. I think this place is unique as alot of items are out on display and what's shown most of the time are what they will make. I think coming early enough before mid afternoon would be the best move if you wanted to try alot of sweets. Going inside the interior is small. There's like 1-3 tables but there's not much. They do have a touch screen you can technically order from but they rather would want you to ask them to ensure they have the item you want on hand; my friend ordered a pineapple bun and they were out for the day so he opted for something else. I got the fresh Strawberry Latte with Panna Cotta. It comes in a really cute glass bottle! The drink was a bit sweet but it was refreshing after a long day of walking around town and doing errands. I also got the Strawberry Bomb Cake! Now this surprised me for sure because I initially thought it was a type, but looking at it, the picture fits the description. The cake was really good! What a cute new Hong Kong bakery in Kentlands! I saw on their Instagram that they do custom cakes as well! Their lava cakes (I got pistachio and chocolate) are so delicious! Came here on a Sunday afternoon and was immediately assisted. The spot was cute, very clean and well organized. Beautiful case filled with really yummy looking desserts. I ordered the Pistachio Coconut Iced Latte and was quite disappointed. For a $8 drink it wasn't too special, the pistachio flavoring was spread throughout the cup (not mixed in), so flavor wise I could barely taste the pistachio unless I'm scrapping the side of the cup and with that, you're just getting clumps of pieces. Really disappointing experience; unfortunately, i couldn't give 0 star here. I reached out multiple times wanting to place a few orders (cakes, Lunar new year gift set) including contacting the owner directly, and either didn't get a response at all or received vague replies days later. When I finally did hear back, the tone came across as arrogant and dismissive, as if taking a customer's order was an inconvenience. Instead of clear communication, I was given excuse after excuse for why my order couldn't be taken--delivery issue (i don't understand why this was an issue for them at all, because i clearly stated that i can do on-site pickup), limited capacity, etc. If you don't want the business, just say so. Don't string customers along and waste their time. A bakery should be welcoming and professional. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here. I won't be reaching out again. read more

5/5 recommend checking this place out! We went at 3 pm and many of the desserts were sold out but still were able to try out several options. We got an egg tart, soymilk mochi cream cake, and Dubai chocolate parfait for desserts. For drinks, we got a matcha latte with panna cotta. We were told when ordering that the Dubai chocolate parfait would take 10 mins which was fine with us. Everything tasted yummy and I'm definitely looking to come back and try other items on the menu :) As for parking, there's street parking outside. I really like this little local spot! It's different from a regular cafe, more of a special treats and drinks shop that you get authentic/ special baked goods with Hong Kong influence. It's a small shop, so when we get there around 1pm, they are still prepping and already some people waiting for order. Took a bit to get the order, but nontheless it's not too long and it was smooth. We had their Hong Kong style milk tea in a bottle (only sell cold, but at the time they are still cooling the bottle so we got it warm), egg tarts, snow mountain bread and bolo bun. As a Hong Kong person, I have to critique a bit harsh of their bolo bun and milk tea...which I find it not as authentic and not as good as I wish for. On the other hand, their snow mountain bun is great! Creamy, cheesey and fluffy! I'll recommend to get their unique pastries, over the HK style pastries and milk tea. But if you haven't had HK food before, this is still a decent first try. Bolo bun is not bad, but it's using a salty base bread, which is not what bolo bun usually like..usually it's a plain tasting, more sweet and light bun with the crust on top. The crust also doesn't hold too well and not sweet enough and not crunchy enough. Milk tea is not as strong and as thick enough, but the taste is close to authentic taste. It could be a bit more floral and more thick/ smooth to taste. However! I'm definitely having higher standard as a HK local, so this might just be them adjusting to local preference - which it's still a good milk tea for people to try and enjoy when you have a crave. Overall I'd recommend to come during weekday, weekend is a bit chaotic since they only have a few staffs and the system is not as well planned. Best to visit Wed-Fri, and get a table there to enjoy a chill, nice dessert. Personally I won't come back if I'm not around that area, but it's nice and I will recommend people that want to try Asian style pastries and specialty bake goods/ drinks. read more

We came around 2 pm on a Sunday and a lot of the pastries/drinks were not available (including the HK style milk tea that I really wanted to try). We decided to get the Portuguese egg tart since we watched them bring out a fresh tray and the Dubai chocolate parfait, which were both delicious and not too sweet. I've been here a few times now and have enjoyed all the pastries I have ordered. This includes the pineapple bun, egg tart, cheese snow mountain bread, black thunder artisan (chocolate-filled) bread, and Hong Kong-style milk tea. The main thing for me is that they are not overly sweet! The egg tarts were warm, flaky, and thick. The pineapple bun was fresh and perfect- I will definitely come back to try the ones with butter next time! When I first found out about this place opening, my inner child was beyond excited. I grew up having certain hong kong classics and the only place I knew I could enjoy these classics was in NYC Chinatowns. There have been a few places that attempted to serve these classics, but they were short of the actual flavor. At first, I had to reel in my expectations as I didn't want to be disappointed but this place definitely did not disappoint. The pineapple bun was airy and fluffy while the topping was flaky and crunchy without being overbaked. They also offer the butter slice which had I not gone so late, I probably would have gotten. These buns sell fast so make sure to go early in the day, I luckily got the last one of the day. Their milk tea and lemon tea sparked many memories. The lemon tea was not as sweet as the ones from my childhood (probably better that it isn't as sweet) but it was still very delicious and took me back to the days of having lunch in the hong kong cafes with my mom. The milk tea reminded me of the ones I used to get in the summers when I would visit my mom or the freshly made hot ones I would get in the winters to pair with my breakfasts in the city. The cafe is tucked along the backside of Kentlands near the townhomes. The interior is cutely decorated with pastels and brightly lit. There is not much seating available but it is a nice space to have afternoon tea with a friend or on a bright sunny day to sit in the window and "sunbathe" while enjoying some not too sweet pick me ups. My friend always get her custom cakes at this place. She lives in Herndon and goes all the way here to pick up her cakes for special occasions so you know it has to be good, and it is! The cakes are always visually appealing and delicious, you can tell the owner puts a lot of work into it. I tried the mango pomelo sago lava cake, it was fluffy and flavorful. It was a soft cake with sago, mango, and pomelo on top with cream and a little mango sauce in the middle. Also I got the strawberry latte with panna cotta, it tasted very fresh and healthy along with the panna at the bottom! I did find the prices on the expensive side but it was a good one time experience. This Hong Kong cafe/bakery was absolutely amazing!!! It is small, but very cute inside. The staff were friendly and attentive. Came for the Hong Kong milk tea and it did not disappoint. Best one you can find in the DMV area for sure. It's potent and delicious! We got a Black Milk Tea with Panna Cotta too and SOOOOO GOOD. The panna cotta sits on the bottom. I was so excited to see that they finally have their own brick and mortar storefront on social media and was so excited to finally check them out. For those of you who may not know, Ed started off his business baking in his house and did a lot of custom cake order and pick up for whatever bread he made that day which is how I found about him initially as his cakes were THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD and some of the coolest most intricate designs ever, so I'm so incredibly happy to see them move up finally and own their own storefront. Now this is the true definition of mom and pop shop as when I came in to visit I ended up talking with the lady cashier in the front, who told me that she was actually the wife and her husband's name is Ed who does all the baking and decorating in the back. They're both two incredibly sweet and kind people and only have a limited inventory of fresh baked products and drinks daily that sell super well and fast (so my advice is try to go earlier on in the day if possible). They also can do fresh made to orders that they have listed, like the strawberry bomb cake but depending on how many orders for cakes he has for the day and how busy they are with other things (since remember it's just the husband that does all the baking and decorating) is how long it would take to make these fresh to made orders. Some days they do close this option if the husband just has too many orders backed up. The cakes and any pastries he makes for the day are so worth the price (even though some of them can get quite expensive)! If you have ever tried a Korean or Chinese bakery, this shop is like the perfect combination of the two. The desserts are never overly sweet (this is due to the fact that many Asian people aren't a huge fan of sweets and actually prefer less sweetness when it comes to their pastries), the cakes are super soft, airy and fluffy (similar to a soufflé), and the intricate flavor profiles he comes up with for all his desserts. He can also create any cake design your heart desires and can almost recreate any inspiration photo you have. They also have a lot of different pictures of past cakes they've made on the tv screen inside the store so you can better get an understanding of what you want as well. This is a cute little bakery/bubble tea shop that's in an area with plenty of parking. There were a couple of tables with seats if you wanted to have a cute little meet up with a friend or two. I want to give it a 3.5 stars, but I don't have that option. I'm sure because of the time of day, a lot of the baked goods were already sold out so I only got 1 thing to try. But I did order the milk tea! It was pretty darn good compared to a lot of other bubble tea shops in the area. I also ordered the tiramisu basque cheesecake, which was ok. It tasted like a regular cheesecake with a layer of light and airy tiramisu cream. I would recommend being careful when you eat it, there is about a teaspoon of cocoa powder on top, if you inhale while eating you may choke a bit (speaking from experience). The server was really nice, but I think she potentially became overwhelmed with the orders coming in, because she forgot my strawberry milk tea. I ordered it and she told us to wait a bit since it would come from the back kitchen but after 20 mins and seeing other people get their drinks, I asked her about it. And she seemed to not remember and double checked my bag to see if I ever got the drink, which is a bit silly because I sat in front of her the whole time not eating/drinking as I waited for this one drink. I'm so happy I decided to get the 4 inch strawberry bomb cake for my husband's birthday! The sweetness level was just right (not too sweet by Asian standards) with fresh diced strawberry bits and the cream was light and fluffy. Stopped in to try this new Asian bakery in Kentlands and was not disappointed. With the Asian food offerings in the area consistently higher quality, it seems like a great addition. The service is friendly and the space is bright and clean. We ordered a pineapple bun (which is huge and beautiful but I have not yet eaten), strawberry bomb, and a salted cream cheese lava cake. Both cakes have a soft vanilla cake base with different creams on top. The strawberry cake is made when you order so you have to wait a bit. I do wish they had some smaller portion sizes, but it's still a soft opening so the offerings are limited. The cost per cake was fair, given the size of what you are provided, but it is relatively expensive. The strawberry bomb is light and fresh, and the salted cream cheese lava cake is amazing, with some toasted almonds on top that give it a perfect amount of crunch. I feel like I have been waiting and wishing for something like Ed Studio to open up in MoCo for years. Its great quality Cantonese baking and desserts. If you like Asian bakeries/cakes you really need to give this place a try stat! I am from Hong Kong and have long been disappointed at the genera lack of good Hong Kong-style cuisine in the DMV. In terms of bakeries and desserts, anytime I wanted HK-style baking I was resigned to having to plan trips to Canada to get decent HK-style desserts. Until now. I was mentally prepared for further disappointment when I was alerted of Ed Studio but have never been so happy to be so wrong. Simply put, Ed Studio is great all around. The baking is not overly heavy, exquisitely designed, but not at the expense of flavor, which is pleasantly intense. In line with the Cantonese style, the cakes are cream-heavy but never felt overwhelming and the flavors are well balanced. What really stood out to me was their beverages; after enduring years of cheap watered-down HK milk teas and lemon teas all over the world, Ed Studio's tea is STRONG, which is exactly how I like it and reminiscent on the flavor you can get from HK street stalls. The pineapple bun was also good, on the light side flavor wise but not greasy or sloppy, with good texture. We also tried a Portuguese tart/pasteis de nata, which at Ed Studio is like a fusion of the sweet pasteis de nata egg custard body with elements of a HK-style crust, so the exterior is not quite as flaky as an outright pasteis de nata but also not biscuit-y and dry like a HK-style one might be. It works quite well, not overly sweet and not oily with a pleasing soft texture all around. Regardless of how its classified, this might be the best egg tart in the whole DMV that I've tried over the last 5+ years (tied with Vjnh Kee in Falls Church) Great taste, good presentation, the art/theme of the store is cute, very nostalgic for me. After reading many good reviews about this place, I have to try it. Got a Coconut Tara Tiramisu and Pineapple bun. The tiramisu looks beautiful, but the favor is blend and the texture is mushy. It is not too sweet. The bun is soft and flaky. Texture is good, but it is blend. Overall, the pastries are good, but not tasty enough for me to pay $14 for tiramisu.
