They're open during the pandemic which is a YAY! My littles wanted ice cream (not popsicles) after a long hard day playing so we drove over around 6pm. They're located on Georgia right next to Denizens, and It's kind of in the cut and hard to see (well it was for me). If you're coming in from East-West Highway (pro tip: don't if you're driving, the parking there is restricted and they tow) you have to walk down stairs between the 1830 building and Denizens to find it. They allow one party in the building at a time. My boys and I went in and the young man immediately asked if we were just using the restroom or also getting ice cream-- I doubt they have public restrooms but I was on a trot after 3 hours out-- and when he realized we were getting ice cream, he didn't allow anyone in until we came out of the bathroom, ordered and left. Very safe. Their ice cream is clean, delicious, and their flavors are unique. I tried honey lavender and It was SOOO good until the very end ( I ate a bit of lavender and didn't taste anything else til I was done). The boys' strawberry ice cream was delicious and NOT pink- we avoid red dyes so this was exactly what we were looking for. The sugar cones are just the right size for the small children and they don't overstuff the cones a la Brusters and Ben and Jerry's. These are just right in size and price for kids. They didn't have a "kids cone" option per se (but I didn't ask) we just did a single scoop. That's one thing I'd like- a cake cone (smaller) with a kid sized scoop. As ir was, I got a scoop and a half helping the 3 year old finish. The 6 year old inhaled it in 2 minutes so it's just about right! Interested in some super premium ice cream (aka ultra premium at this business)? Super premium, premium, standard, and economy are marketing terms used by ice cream makers. The FDA rules (in general) for calling a frozen dairy product ice cream are: 1) it must have at least 10% dairy milkfat. 2) it must weigh at least 4.5 lbs per gallon. 3) the overrun cannot exceed 100%. Super means the ice cream has at least 15% milkfat and less than 50% overun. Each ice cream company has their own definition, but they are similar. Overrun is the percentage of air in the ice cream compared to the starting materials. E.g. If you start with 1 quart of ice cream ingredients and mix it until it expands to 2 quarts, you will have 100% overrun. More milkfat and less overrun makes ice cream thicker, richer, creamier, and smoother. So, my wife and I came here to try their super premium ice cream and sorbet. They have 17% milkfat in their ice cream. We sampled 5 items and bought 4. 1) Pumpkin milkshake It tasted like pumpkin pie with cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. No noticeable clove flavor, which was fine with me. It was thick, creamy, and rich while still being easy to drink through a straw. It had a smooth sweetness that was just right. A great milkshake if you love pumpkin pie! The pumpkin ice cream was smooth, rich, and creamy with a great pumpkin pie flavor. It was the best tasting out of the 5 we tried. That's why we picked it for the milkshake. 2) Peanut Butter It had a strong roasted peanut flavor with a moderate sweetness level. The flavor was excellent, but the texture was not right. The ice cream had ice crystals throughout, not just the surface. I hope this was a production error and not the norm. Iciness is not acceptable at $9.25 per pint. 3) Gingersnap It had finely crushed gingersnap cookies in it. It tasted like gingersnap cookies with a strong ginger flavor. It was smooth, rich, and creamy. There were 2 problems: it melted very quickly and the ginger flavor was too strong. Less ginger and a touch more molasses would have made it great tasting. Ironically, molasses makes ice cream softer and melt faster. My photo shows the amount of melting that occurred in less than a minute after scooping it out of the container. I can imagine the mess on a hot day while eating this from a cone. You have to eat this very quickly if you don't want to drink it. This is inconsiderate to the customer. 4) Mango sorbet This had a natural mango flavor with a good amount of sweetness, but not too much. There were bits of mango in it which added some tanginess. It was thick and smooth with no iciness. This was fruity and refreshing! The service was informative, helpful, and friendly. They let you sample as many as you like. There were only 12 flavors available on our visit. They usually have more, but supplies had not been delivered. There are 2 freezers with pints of ice cream and sorbet for sale. The store was clean. They had 7 tables with chairs and counter seating. There are no restrooms for customers. I found the sorbet to be one of the best around DC. Some of the ice cream was disappointing in either taste or texture. The iciness in the peanut butter ice cream was probably due to a mistake that was made during the production. They need to check each batch of ice cream before release. The incredibly rapid melting of the Gingersnap ice cream will turn people off. That's easily fixable. Taste is subjective. I just think it's better to have less ginger as opposed to more. The pumpkin ice cream was an excellent example of super premium ice cream. We will return to try other flavors and give the peanut butter ice cream another try. read more

This place is adorable with such a friendly staff. The same ice cream selection is incredible. I got chocolate peanut butter which was delicious. My husband got coconut with almonds and cookie overload. He ate it just as fast as I did with my single scoop. There a ton more flavors I want to try so we will be back. This place is a hidden gem! My friend and I were walking around downtown and found this cute little shop. It didn't look like much on the outside but we wandered in anyway and were soo surprised to find that they sell coffee and ice cream! They have a million flavors and let you try samples. The workers were very nice, patient, and gave good recommendations. The sitting area was not the cutest ever but it was homey and had character! It was a quiet little shop that I would definitely come back to. I got a small vanilla cup of ice cream for $3.71! I've been living near Moorenko's for about a year without realizing. I have a sweet tooth, but very rarely for ice cream, and the one day I had a craving I was welcomed in! The two staff members working immediately jumped to say hello and provided good recommendations. It's a small shop with lots of Ice cream and sorbet flavors. The have outdoor seating and the staff are very friendly. They were following covid protocols as well. I got the cherry stracciatella which was good. But I would recommend the salted caramel with pralines (5/5)- amazing flavor. The fudge was a bit thick and I didn't like it much. The honey lavender is awesome! Definitely get it or try it because the staff are patient and they let you try as many flavors as you'd like. I also liked the banana peanut butter, blueberry mascarpone and baklava flavors although some are seasonal. They generally have high quality ice cream that's rich and creamy. I'm not sure why they add egg yolks but it's still great. It's $6 for two scoops which is kind of standard for ice cream shops. They have shakes and sorbet too! Always a pleasure going to Moorenko's. I never leave without at least 2 custom pints of ice cream. Honey lavender is always in the mix and I sometimes add the grapefruit Campari to the mix. My BFF is coming for a visit this weekend so I got her a pint of her own with peppermint stick and the salted caramel with pralines...because I'm not sharing mine . The customer service is always amazing and yesterday I managed to have a nice conversation with the gentleman working there about working with Moorenko's since high school and his future career aspirations. This is my favorite ice cream spot in Montgomery County and the prices are more than reasonable. Due to Covid-19 masks are required, only 1 group is allowed in at a time and they are not taking cash. I'm always a sucker for the local, and this place tried to win my heart by offering not one, not two, but three different mint flavors. I ordered white chocolate mint and the standard mint chip, passing up the seasonal peppermint in favor of a candy apple flavor with those little red hot candies in it as well as whole apple pieces. Which I guess makes it healthy. It was a solid ice cream; they say there's not a lot of air in it and I believe them. The flavors were excellent; not the best mint I've ever had but I was satisfied. The shop itself is a bit of an awkward spot; a couple of blocks away from the main stretch of Silver Spring business, and around a lot of intersections and not so much parking. It's not cheap ice cream, but I'd say taking that trip from the heart of Silver Spring to get something more unique than the Ben and Jerry's that resides there is a good decision. read more

Moorenko's continues to provide delicious flavors with unique and fresh ingredients. Their ice cream is creamy, rich, and flavorful. They also have a number of sorbet options for non-dairy folks. They have a nice space with some board games, an outdoor space, and a collection of old records for purchase. One of my friends did have slow service on receiving their order, and a different received the incorrect hit drink order. I only wish they made more flavors with mix-ins. A lot of their flavors have no mix-in, some have one, and almost none have 2 or more. Personally, I wish they would explore that flavor space a bit more. Still delicious and a nice space! There's a good reason why this independent ice cream shop is so popular, and it's because their ice cream is simply the best. Not just best in flavor, but best in ingredients. It's ultra-premium, unlike other nearby chains. This means, according to their website, that their selections contain 17% milkfat, giving it a signature ultra-premium richness and creaminess. It really is the creamiest ice cream you'll have outside of a dairy farm (MSU Dairy Store has equally awesome ice cream). It melts fast because it's made with milk and cream like real ice cream should be. I bought several pints, as they don't last long. My favorite so far is the Honey Lavender. It's unique and refreshing. And while I enjoyed the Green Tea ice cream, it wasn't as flavorful as others I have had in the area. You can't go wrong with chocolate chip, but you should be adventurous and try something new. There's seating inside and out. Kennett Street garage is a quick walk if you cross East-West Hwy. and walk by the side of Denizens. Beer and ice cream? Why not! read more

We decided to make a trip to visit this ice cream shop while in the family and friends in the area. It's a small establishment located in downtown Silver Springs. Paid street and garage Parking nearby is available. We did luck out (and because it was a Sunday) and found free street parking on one of the side street. The shop has a cute retro vibe. It has some indoor seating as well a few tables and chairs with outdoor seating available. Ordering was a little confusing as it was not very obvious which counter area you could order from. We came in through the side entrance and there were 3 people behind the counter. One on register and two that were serving the ice cream. Ordering around the counter can get a little congested particularly if people are trying to go in and out the side entrance while you are attempting to order. They did have a variety of ice cream flavors to choose from and a nice selection of sorbet to choose from for those who need non- dairy options. The add-ins seem somewhat limited for those who may what fudge sauce ( they ran out) or sprinkles etc. If you ate looking for soft serve, this is not the place for you. No soft serve available at this location. Our party had coffee and chocolate ice cream as well as the lemon sorbet. We all had our desserts in a bowl so can not speak to waffle bowls or cones. Ice cream is always pretty good, right? I will give Moorenko's that they have a good selection of flavors. And those flavors are unique. On my visit I tried the white chocolate mint, and cinnamon flavors. They were both pretty good. I did get the bottom of the white chocolate mint batch so there were some large globs of white chocolate which made the texture a bit odd, but the flavor was good. The service was...meh. Though I did appreciate the cashier's choice in entertainment (she was watching Marvel's Agents of Shield). They do have WiFi, and some board games so it could be a chill place to kill some time in Silver Spring. read more

I was looking for a local homemade ice cream shop. Thought I'd check this place out. Service with meh, after the staff finished serving the other customer they just stared at me and then stepped away from the counter. I wasn't sure if they were ready to help me or not so I blurted out I wanted to try some flavors. I tried both the crème fraîche and the honey lavender which tasted delicious so I decided to get a double since you can't spit the single into two flavors. I'm surprise how much ice cream you actually get for a double scoop and I paid over $5 for this. You can definitely get more at different ice cream shops such as Jennie's or Ice Cream Jubilee. After breaking apart the scoop I realize it was just mostly air/space so really didn't get a full scoop at all (see photos). Definitely will not be returning here. read more

This is delicious! They are only doing electronic payments right now because of the pandemic. That works for me. The ice cream is so great. I got two scoops: one of the Blackberry Chocolate Chip and one of the Honey Lavender! They pair very well. Topping aren't a thing here. Come for the ice cream, it's all you need. read more

We had a bizarre experience here. First of all, the store looks like it's closed. We arrived 2 hours before closing time and most of the chairs were stacked up making it look like they were cleaning up for the evening. But the store looks really filthy so they definitely weren't cleaning up. We asked for an ice cream sundae​. The person behind the counter told us to come back next week because they were out of whipped cream. Honestly it got even stranger from there. We asked if they had any other toppings.. the guy pointed to a window, where there were some nearly empty jars of what looked like very old toppings. ​ Then we asked if they had any marshmallow sauce, and he looked at us like we were speaking a foreign language. Interesting flavors and never all that crowded, when I'm too lazy to make my own ice cream I stop by Moorenko's to check out their creations. Last weekend it was a pint of ginger snap and a pint of chocolate peanut. I thought it was chocolate peanut butter, but it was more like chocolate ice cream with crushed goobers (you know, chocolate covered peanuts?). Good, though surprising. I am been dying to visit this ice cream store since I saw it as a Yelp event. Unfortunately for me I was not part of the event, but I did recently visit for their remodel. It should be noted that this location was offering deals and promotions that are not typically offered during my visit. I have to admit, I jumped at the opportunity of visiting this location. When we arrived I noticed that there were games set out for customers to play. We didn't play any, but only because I was concerned about if they were sticky or not. We ordered a dish of the cotton candy ice cream, a chocolate peanut butter milkshake, and a honey lavender milkshake. The cotton candy ice cream smells unbelievably like cotton candy. It's bright blue color was definitely a hit. The honey lavender milkshake was also delicious, not overly sweet either. Unfortunately the chocolate peanut butter milkshake was not the best. There were large chunks of peanuts that kept getting stuck in my straw. The peanuts also had a very bitter taste to them. I am a huge chocolate peanut butter lover but this is something I would skip. Since we were there for the event we were able to sample their chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches. I have super sensitive teeth, but otherwise I would order this sandwich. I believe they are four dollars, a little expensive but definitely worth it. We also got to try the Philly Pretzels. I hate to admit this but I recently saw an episode of Undercover Boss for Philly Pretzels and was stoked to try them. Unfortunately they were not good. I don't think I would even take another sample...yikes. All in all we had a good experience here. If we were in the area again we would probably stop in for some local ice cream. read more

As for pricing, there is no huge difference between this ice cream shop and Ben and Gerry's, the taste, however, is worth the price in comparison. Moorenko's doesn't stand out from the street and may not be easy to spot. It is located in the back of Denizen's Brewery and is relatively small. The staff is very friendly and didn't mind me tasting almost all of the flavors they offer, which unfortunately aren't many. I went there twice and enjoyed their ice cream. It is also not overly sweetened which I loved. However, it melts very fast, so if it's hot, and you plan to enjoy your treat outside, you may want to eat quickly. read more

In search of dessert after dinner, my friend recommended we walk to this nearby ice cream shop. Once inside, it was pretty small, but they have some outdoor seating options which was nice. The menu is written out on this giant chalkboard, and each flavor is in a different font, which was cute. There were about 4 people working behind the counter at the time, and only about 4 of us in line. When it was my time to order I asked if they had any waffle cones, because I wanted to see the size of it. The gentleman told sorry, but they did not have anymore. I said it was okay, and just got my ice cream in a bowl. While he was preparing my order, a women began to help the next customer behind me. The customer ordered their ice cream in a waffle cone, which the lady grabbed from the back, and proceeded to give it to the customer. I thought that was pretty strange, as I was told a few mins prior that they didn't have anymore. Aside from that, I still enjoyed the ice cream. I'm in between how to rate Moorenko's. It has a good and a bad. I feel like the atmosphere doesn't do justice for the ice cream served here. Is the ice cream delicious? Yes. Are there unique flavors? Yes. This is one of the times I let the food speak for itself. The location and atmosphere leaves a lot less to be desired if its your first time coming. It's in a weird spot in Downtown Silver Spring, finding side street/garage parking is meh, and the shop seems underwhelming. If this shop was located in the prime strip of DTSS, I'm sure it would blow Ben & Jerry's out the water. The few people who walked in afterwards seem to only be locals who know of the shop. This was my second time coming again after 2 years and the place hasn't changed, which has its pros and cons. It looks a bit outdated here with old machinery, so it's nothing extravagant to give you an "WOW" first impression. But once you try the ice cream its really different and tasty! I had samples of the Rose ice cream and Grapefruit Sorbet. Pretty good in capturing these unique flavors! The Rose seemed really icy and crystallized from probably sitting for awhile and not getting touched, so even though this place is local it does make me wonder how long the ice cream sits in the freezers. However, hands down, as soon as I tried the Tiramisu and Cotton Candy, I was in love. The tiramisu had actual cake bits in it and it was my favorite. The Cotton Candy came with gummy bears and I was told its their only flavor with artificial coloring. The color was vibrant and will turn your mouth blue but its delicious. The four flavors I tried alone were really good and the prices aren't obnoxious for the large scoops. Only hope one day this place doesn't close, but moves to the prime area of downtown. It would do so well with more business to upgrade their old machines and fix up their kinks. read more

A single scoop is over $3, and the flavors are really limited. You know you're in trouble when a 5 year old can't find a flavor he wants! When we went there was no: caramel, salted caramel, cake batter, cookie dough, etc. We tried cinnamon and chocolate peanut butter. The cinnamon was much better, kind of like horchata ice cream. But I've had better store bought ice cream when it came to the chocolate! The peanut butter was just stale chunks of peanut in overly sweet, fake chocolate. Yuck. Should have turned around when I realized we were the only people in the store! There did seem to be several dairy free flavors, so if that's your jam maybe give them a try? read more
