They have the best ice cream in town. They make their ice cream locally, with locally sourced dairy. They use fresh ingredients I thought super premium ice cream where just sell word like extra strength. I was wrong. Ultra premium actually refers to the milk fat content and directly affects how smooth and creamy the ice cream is. They use special mixing machines that mix the ice cream slowly to not add as much air, keeping it smoother. They have some very creative flavors. My top favorite are salted caramel with pralines and bitter sweet chocolate. They also have interesting ones like lavender that was surprisingly good. The store had a good atmosphere and the service is good most of the time. Trust me, you won't be disappointed by the ice cream! read more

Cotton Candy Ice Cream with Gummy Bears? Sign me up ! It's delicious Rum Raisin? Sign me up more! That's the one I ended up with. other flavors included Pumpkin They were actually out of a lot of flavors when we went. They had them in pints, but not for scoop serve. The guy who at served us was super kind. He didn't seem like he minded at all that we sampled a bunch of flavors. He was a little apologetic about not having so many flavors. He really cared about the customer experience. Overall, a great experience. The ice cream was delicious. And the store was big and had plenty of seating. I will surely be back. read more

Three and a half stars. Friendly, if slightly absent service. Lots of seating inside and out. Went later in the day when a third of their daily rotation had already run out, though there was a decent array of flavors left in their pre-packed pints. A few basic fruit options for that last minute pang of guilt, sampler trio format for the indecisive when tiny tastes can't break a tie. Bittersweet chocolate was reasonably balanced. Cotton candy w/gummy bears was as sweet as expected, with solidly chilled gummies peppered throughout. Rum raisin and butter pecan were decently executed staples, and both pumpkin and blueberry tasted as seasonally fresh as I'd hoped. I like their creative flavors, but still wish their ice cream was a little richer. read more

I love ice cream. This is my happy place. It will be your happy place, too. Moorenko's ice cream is truly premium: it is decadent, creamy, luxurious. The flavors are subtle and sublime. If you're used to more commercial ice cream, this may be a shock, but truly, it will win your palate over. I used to live in Silver Spring so it was my secret, but I'm happy to journey here from DC. My personal favorite is the salted caramel. But on a hot day, the honey-lavender and the ginger can both be very refreshing. You may have a hard time deciding between the different flavors but they are generous with samples. VEGAN NOTE: Their sorbets are excellent. Every time my mom, who is lactose intolerant, is in town she pleads with me to bring her here for the chocolate sorbet. The staff is always oh so nice and the owner, Susan, is often around and really cares about her customers being happy and becoming loyal supporters. If you can't make it out to Silver Spring, look for it in certain grocery stores like Yes, Whole Foods, Giant, and Safeway. This is just too good to not try. read more

The vegan ice cream was well and I loved it, I got the strawberry and maple syrup one , I will try blueberry next

The lavender-honey flavor was fresh and creamy! Ice cream is high quality and the employees were very accommodating to our requests

The ice cream is a tasty delight, but the poor customer service is short of a 5 star review. Moorenko's Ice Cream received Silver Spring's best ice cream award last year and I read about some of the unique flavors. So, I decided to treat myself and check it out. This place is quite hidden and easy to miss, it's in a sketchy location right near the underpass near Sligo Ave. The ice cream parlor has a nice cafe vibe with cozy chairs and tables. When I was walked in, it was hard to choose from the large assortment of flavors ranging from Guinness to mint chocolate chip, so I sampled a few flavors (bitter chocolate, cotton candy with gummies, and honey lavender). The honey lavender was very good and I got a kids size. The lavender flavor is basically vanilla ice cream with a strong lavender taste, chunks of lavender pieces with light honey. Although the ice cream was delicious, the owner left a sour taste in my mouth. From the greeting to giving me my change, he didn't smile once. His attitude was as cold as the ice cream. The owner so looked miserable and unpleasant that I told him "You don't look happy" and he responded with "I'm tired". I was appalled by the poor customer service and looked around at all the empty chairs...no wonder. I'll definitely be bringing my beer obsessed friends back to try the Guinness flavor, but hopefully the owner will be out on a sick day. read more

I'm sorry but this place is not good. The ice cream is not tasty at all, really tastes super chemically, actually. The facility itself was INCREDIBLY dirty. Like literally dirt everywhere. It did not at all appear clean. read more

Foul smell permeates any visitor. Clearly a organic decomposition is underway and not the place I want to eat ice cream. Poor service... no gloves, sanitation nightmare. Empty boxes packed into freezers. I am making this review because I feel obligated as a food equipment industry guy to say something. I have no idea how this place passes MD state inspection. One word to describe there ice cream - DELICIOUS. I can truly taste the naturalness of it. I'm a huge lover of ice cream but can only eat homemade and all natural. Found this place on Groupon and decided to try. Had the Ginger, Honey Lavender, and Cherry Stracciatella. Enjoyed the pieces of ginger in the Ginger. Lovely taste of floral lavender flavor in the Honey Lavender. Nice pieces of cherry and good balance of cherry and chocolate in Cherry Stracciatella. So GOOD! So much more flavors to try. I like that they offer half scoop options for two different flavors. Waffle cone is just ok. Something I'll pass on next time. Stick to the reg. cone. Customer service was good. He was helpful in explaining the flavors and using my Groupon dollars to maximize my ice cream purchase which I brought home two pints Butterscotch( one of the best I've ever had-so flavorful but not overly sweet) and Ginger - my favorite so far. Can't wait until my next visit to try more. Sorry, was enjoying it so much that I forgot to take a pic. read more

I'm not a big dessert or sweets fan but this might be the best ice cream I've ever had. Walked in, got my cone (French Vanilla in a cake cone), looked at it and then SAW A RED HAIR IN MY ICE CREAM. Told the lady at the counter (she also had red hair that was the same tone and color). She said she'd get me a new cone, didn't apologize. She just said "oh okay." And then one of her coworkers got me a new cone (he then said "sorry about that"). None of them offered me a refund or anything. The girl then immediately went back to watching Netflix on her phone (there were also other customers inside the establishment). Ice cream was subpar, nothing special. Even the inside of the restaurant was subpar and plain (my friends and I went here because we thought the inside would be really cute and different than like a chain ice cream store but it would have been the same quality of ice cream if we had gone to like Baskin-Robins/ColdStone or something). read more

Friendly staff greeted me upon entry and let me know I could taste samples of any of the tubs! Truly delicious ice cream in so many varied flavors it was a hard decision. This place takes the fun out of ice cream. Ordered mint chip, which had little flavor and their definition of chip must be some type of mint leaf, no chocolate anywhere. The employee was very busy with his phone, then concerned with me using hand sanitizers, and finally on weighing the ice cream. Overall, had a very sterile, medicinal feel. After sharing it with my husband and daughter, we threw the remains of a single scoop away. I love ice cream and have been trying complete the Maryland Ice cream Trail....This was the biggest disappointment ever. read more

I have had my fair share of ice cream and as a rule love it no matter what. However Moorenko's fell a little flat for me. The high reviews had me expecting a whole lot. I didn't see a whole lot toppings although yes there is a good variety of options, but they are pretty basic. Totally fine if you are passing by with the family, but not overly adventurous in terms of flavour and intensity. I will say the salted caramel with pralines was really good. The honey lavender was too, but the lavender bits in the honey lavender could have been a little smaller I found myself having to remove one or two from my mouth. Still, my stop over was not regrettable, make sure you taste before you select! read more

Just showed up at 10:40 on a Saturday night. The sign on the door says open till 11. Overpriced ice cream and not many toppings. We ordered groupons for this place and decided to visit on a saturday evening to find out that they only had sprinkles for topping and most of the flavors they advertised where not on the current menu. Yum. It's not the not the best ice cream I've ever had but it's still very very good. The peppermint stick flavor is my favorite.

This place was so meh I don't know where to start. The ice cream wasn't bad, it was fine but it wasn't much better than any store-bought ice cream I've had lately. The freezers must have been turned down too cold because the poor lady scooping it was busting her knuckles just trying to get it into the cup. This was a bad sign to me right off the bat. Ice cream needs to be served a little softer than that so you can even taste it. And the portions weren't that big. Inside it's decorated with not really much at all. There's no place to recycle the plastic spoons they give you. In silver spring for God's sakes! You just throw them away so they can end up in the oceans. Tourist trap! read more

Decided to try something out of the norm of Baskin Robins or Coldstone for the kids. While we were on the way home from DC, yelped around for ice cream shops and found this one. Parking situation could be better and maybe another staff member would help too. Went on a Saturday evening and they only have 1 person there getting the ice cream, making the milk shakes and ringing everyone up. There was a line of maybe 4 families with 3-6 members in each. Luckily the kids I were with were entertained by the games they had to offer. Flavors were different and quite delicious. The sorbets were the kids and I's favorite. I first found out about Moorenko's at Wicked Waffles where they serve Moorenko's French Vanilla Bean with a couple of their menu items. I didn't try it then, but when I was in Silver Spring a couple days later, Moorenko was the first thing on my mind. It's a cute, bright, and cheery shop with a huge menu. In addition to ice cream, they also have sorbet, coffee, frappacinos, cake, cookies, etc. I bought a scoop of the chocolate chip which was a nice blend of dark chocolate and vanilla bean. My cousin got the mango sorbet which was a perfect amount of sweet (there was definitely no artificial flavoring). Moorenko's offers some non-traditional flavors but they don't go overboard. I would definitely love to try some more. read more

This place was good before but the Bump 'n Grind merger makes it even better. Highly recommended when you get a chance.

Have an ice cream craving? Moorenkos is your place to be! It hits the spot and always satisfies my dessert stomach like no other. The ambiance: A great little place in Silver Spring. Parking may be difficult as there are only parking meters up front on Georgia but there is always the public garages available nearby. Plenty to seating inside and the alleyway is super adorable with seating as well. During the summer months, it gets crowded. The eats: Unique flavors with a punch (aka not subtle)! Absolutely delicious!!! The flavors I've had worth mentioning are the salted caramel with pecans (my favorite), cinnamon cappuccino, pumpkin, pear sorbet, razz chocolate chip, and strawberries and cream. There's literally a million flavors to try. I'm always super undecided coming in and happens to be that person to tries 10 flavors before making a decision (haters gonna hate) - but the staff are always accommodating and friendly. Overall: I personally love supporting small businesses and this place does a great job from friendly customer service, great vibes, and delicious ice cream/sorbets. The only downside is the price. Yes you pay for what you get and they offer solid ice cream. Thanks Moorenkos for being open today in 35 degree weather. Recommend! read more

Solid neighborhood ice cream place. Great atomsphere located in downtown silver spring. The flavors are great and they sell pints to go. The owner is super nice and friendly. They do not have soft serve. The pretzels are ok, a bit dry and hard. The have out door seating on a small patio. The ginger is great. The flavors are not as sweet as Jeni's and the ice cream is hard. They have books and games for you. Overall a great family place or if you are in the neighborhood. read more

We have been going for years and they never disappoint. Great ice cream, friendly people.

Love this ice cream shop! I prefer it to any other place for ice cream in the downtown Silver Spring area. But both times that I've visited, it has never been very busy. I don't think people know it exists. Look carefully, it's easy to miss. It is kind of tucked behind Crisfield Seafood (no shade to Crisfield's) It's hard to get a good parking space close by too, so prepare to walk a few blocks from the nearest street parking or garage. The ice cream is homemade and uses all natural ingredients. When you walk in, there is a chalkboard with a list of all the flavors that are available. You can usually find a few classic flavors, some wilder flavors like cotton candy gummy bear, and some flavors with mix-ins like nuts or other candy. They also serve sorbet, shakes, floats, and to-go ice cream flavors (pints and quarts of different flavors in a separate refrigerator.) Something for everyone. The style and decor inside is bare, all white and lackluster. However, it does look clean. I can't remember the extent of their toppings. I think it's limited, especially if you are used to fro-yo and ice cream shops where toppings are a main attraction. I've tried the coconut once and the cinnamon ice cream (in a waffle cone) the second time. So good! My niece got 2 scoops of vanilla and couldn't stop mentioning how good was. This place is worth the trip and the ice cream is top notch. read more

So, I went to their store and bought their black raspberry chocolate (yum) and their coconut almond pints (not so yum). I found plastic container pieces in the coconut almond - what the hell? This is not only unsanitary - it's a choking hazard!! What if a kid had bought and tried to eat this? This is dangerous. Be aware and VERY careful. I love supporting local businesses but I can't with this one. They have some production issues here - will not go back and will not buy their products again. It's a sin that I haven't reviewed Moorenko's yet, given how much I come here. I'll keep it short - this ice cream is BOMB. You can read their description online to see exactly why it's "super premium ice cream", but the bottom line is they produce extremely high-quality, rich, decadent ice cream in creative and perfectly executed flavors. Yes, it's a little pricey. Yes, the scoops could be bigger. But they do everything right - from the fat content to the egg yolks to the amount of air in the product. I'm happy to pay a little extra for something this good. If you want cheap ice cream, go to the grocery store. If you want to be wowed, come here. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't get (or at least try) the honey lavender. Other top flavors are fresh ginger and cinnamon. read more

Being an Ohio native, I've longed for an ice cream than can at least come close to what I get when I go back. Unfortunately, Moorenko's doesn't cut the mustard. But, considering what passes for ice cream here on the East Coast, I'm not surprised the natives think it's the bomb. I got a salted caramel malt, which was more milk than ice cream. It was mediocre, at best. And the aging hippie who works there has all of the charm and warmth of a Soviet prison matron. It's always such a pleasure to come in there and receive his cold scowl for spending money at their establishment. I don't know if he's the owner, but either way, he'd do well to get some charm lessons. So, for all those East Coast natives living in the DC/Baltimore area, I have a tip for you . . . Get in your car, head up to York, PA, and go to Handel's Ice Cream. It is the closest of their establishments to DC, was started by a little, old lady in Youngstown, and was rated as one of the 25 best ice creams by USA Today. Trust me -- It's DEFINITELY worth the drive, if you are an ice cream connoisseur. Or, go to Dean & Deluca in Georgetown & pick up some Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream. Both of these put this East Coast swill to shame. read more

My sister in law and her family has never had dim sum. I know. The horror seeped deep into my heart. However, I calmly reminded myself that they knew how to use chopsticks and they did survive a 17 course Thanksgiving meal with my family, so they were not gastronomical n00bs, they just lacked an opportunity to be guided in dim summy goodness. Sunday we head over to Oriental East (which I can not review, as my dad is good friends with the staff there) and after overstuffing ourselves, the kids decide that they needed ice cream. Heh, I love these guys...they understand the need for multiple meals in a 3 hour period. My kind of folks! So with a couple of misturns by my crappy GPS, we finally get to Moorenko, which is sandwiched between the Mayorga Coffee Factory and the original Crisfield's. When we get there, my husband spies the "Yelp Loves Us" sticker on the door. Heh, it's so weird, but seeing that sticker just made me feel a little better that we weren't walking into a cesspool of ice cream hell or anything. Because it was raining, we couldn't sit outside, where in the alley way of Moorenko there was super neat art deco sculpture pieces. Definitely need to come back on a nice night! I got the lime sorbet, because I don't really like sweets or ice cream, and I was completely blown away by this! It was extremely sour and tart, with just a hint of saltiness which brought out the richness of the lime even more. I know this sounds odd, but I absolutely hate the "creaminess" of ice cream, and often, many parlors would try to make sorbet imitate this "creaminess"...but not at Moorenko! It was crisp and icy and marvelously refreshing! Oh yes, they also offered a chocolate chip cookie cone, which my brother in law ordered with his ice cream (and which his 3 year old promptly took away from him...hilarious), which looked delicious and quite intriguing! Although this was a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon, the guy behind the counter was friendly and funny. While I wouldn't have faulted him for being a little stoneyfaced on this deary and wet day, he was remarkably upbeat and didn't seem to mind that we interrupted his studying! Such a great attitude was even more refreshing then my delicious lime sorbet! I will definitely be back, especially on nice warm nights, and perhaps sit in the cool little alley way that is beckoning me... read more

It was the first sunny day in a long time (remember those weeks in May 2016 when DC turned into Seattle?) and on my way home from work I decided to stop by for ice cream. I had just recently moved to the area and was excited to try a local ice cream shop. The place was empty and had a neglected vibe to it. I sampled a couple of flavors before picking one and honestly they all tasted the same...just bland vanilla! The guy who was helping me finally suggested the honey lavender, which was a tiny bit more flavorful than the other two. So I decided to go with a small cup of that, tipped generously and headed home to relax with my ice cream cup. I put the spoon in to start eating it and what do I find....a dark coarse HAIR!!!! Will definitely not be coming back!! read more

I went into Moorenko's for the first time today. Found the ice cream (mocha choc chip) so-so (scarce on choc chips) and expensive, but what really put me off was the attitude of the long gray-haired man (about my age) who served me. He didn't smile at all, didn't welcome me when I said it was my first time in, didn't even respond when I commented on liking the sign asking for cell phone courtesy. I felt unwelcome as a customer, and won't go back nor recommend it. read more

Moorenkos was moo-liscious ! The creamy rich and delicious ice cream took the cream out of the cow and made it magnificent. Tucked in a little alley way off of Georgia Avenue I was pleasantly surprised to taste high quality ice cream served at reasonable prices. The server was quick, kind, and patient as I tried a variety of flavors. I ended up getting a three scoop trial of my three favorite tastes. I adored the cotton candy flavor that was infused with real gummy worms. A fabulous combination of creamy goodness and realistic cotton candy taste . It was heaven. I also tried the butter pecan with rich and creamy buttery taste loaded with yummy pieces of pecans. Lastly, I opted for the plain chocolate. There was nothing plain about this chocolate. It was rich and creamy chocolate flavor that melted in your mouth. There were about 9 Yelpers all ordering different variations and they got them all correct. Then, there was silence as we all thoroughly enjoyed our sweet treats. The store was decorated with shelves of cute cows in many sizes, shapes, and colors. So go for the cute Cow decor and stay for the phenomenally cool creamy fresh gastronomic goodness that they call Ice cream. It is the best in town. read more

Their ice cream tasted just okay, nothing spectacular. Walking in was weird. Imagine walking up to the counter to order and some guy is behind the counter, he looks up from his book and has to remove his headphones. Apparently this behavior is allowed but I thought it was unprofessional. He was extremely personable and nice. But omg, walking in, it smelled so bad --- a cross between garbage that needed to be taken out and body odor. I really think it's just an old building but geez, who wants to eat and smell that at the same time. The ice cream flavors were in box containers and the boxed containers were in these unappealing deep freezers. So you really could not see what the ice cream looked like or what was happening in those freezers. For example, you wouldn't be able to see if someone stuck their finger in your ice cream as they scooped it out. I like seeing my ice cream behind the glass so I can ensure there's nothing kooky going on. I would not recommend this place. read more

I am a huge fan of Moorenko's ice cream and love the fact that they have an actual store in Silver Spring (so I feel that I'm guaranteed fresh batches of ice cream), but the service here is hit or miss. I've come here a few times -- a couple of times the place was closed even when their hours said they would be open (so it might be best to call ahead to this place to make sure they're open if you're coming from a distance), and other times the service wasn't very responsive. I'll admit that those experiences were from awhile back, and that my more recent experience with the servers has been good. They're always very nice about letting you try the different flavors, and there's usually a very large selection. The main reason why I love their ice cream is that I don't get a negative reaction to it. (I'm someone who's allergic to milk due to the hormones in milk, so I generally react poorly to milk products, including ice cream. This ice cream is one of the few that doesn't cause me any trouble.) Their fruity ice cream flavors also pack a lot of flavor, including real fruit chunks. My favorite is their blueberry ice cream, with a close second being their chocolate. read more
