Dropped in for a late dinner on a weekend evening. Giving that we came in about 30 mins before the scheduled close, you would imagine the team being a bit rushed, but I never felt that way. We received complimentary hibiscus tea when we said down, which was a pleasant gesture. Great hospitality overall. Ordered: Wings Crab fried rice Crispy Duck Basil Everything was delicious! The duck with veggies were fried perfectly and the sauce was both tangy and sweet. The owner even brought out a pepper sauce he made using chilies from his garden outside, so so good. This place may be off beaten path, and with the construction it's a little tricky to get to. Don't let that stop you. If you're someone like me who prefers cuisine authenticity over flashy or fancy ambience & unique presentation, you should trust the great reviews and longevity of this business. I almost always prefer a place that prides itself first and foremost on good quality cuisine, especially when it's at a very fair price with generous portions. Dishes: *Don't miss the mango sticky rice dessert with blue rice! *Of the three appetizers we tried the table favorite was the Chive Dumplings Even though I've been to more Thai places than I can recall, I believe this was the first time I tried this, but it won't be the last. * I couldn't decide between two of the specials so they added the Catfish Gone Wild sauce to the Crispy Duck Basil. It was a good call. It might have been sacrilege to the traditional dish, but I believe our server suggested it, and it was so delicious. Did take out from this location. It was conveniently across the street from a hotel a friend in town and today's meeting was staying. She wanted Thai. Staff were exceptional. Really, nice. For a Thursday night, it was pretty full of customers. Ambiance was nice; on trend. The food... my friend ordered the Pad Thai Tom. I ordered the Roasted Duck Curry. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal. Mine was good, it's just the duck was way, way, way over cooked. It was apparently sitting in the continuously cooking/heated Curry sauce. At that price point, the duck can be cooked to order, if the customer shares the temperature of the duck they want. Duck takes less than 25 minutes to cook. Over all... good. Good food and good folks working. There were four of us and we all enjoyed our food, including spring rolls, duck curry, pad Thai, mango sticky rice and more. And the complimentary ginger tea was genuinely delicious. One slight annoyance is the lack of paper menus, as not all of us have our phones always available. They brought a tablet of their own to use, but it wouldn't connect with the server. And in any case, ordering on a small phone screen with a clunky app is more cumbersome than just using an old-fashioned menu, and you lose the ability to get direct feedback from the server. Ah well, still and nice meal and we are glad to have this place available. read more

Solid Thai food, especially appetizers, that is unfortunately a little hampered and obscured at the moment by the roadwork on Bonifant Street (if you are coming from the Georgia Ave side stay on the sidewalk to the right until you reach a crossover point). I stopped by and had dinner. The chicken satay and wontons were both very good and I for sure would order it again. I tried tofu Thai ginger and while it did not blow me away I ate it all. I would have preferred something slightly less brothy (even accounting for the tofu) but your preference may vary. I don't think I would order it again but I am also not unhappy or disappointed in any way. Mango sticky rice was also solid, and the mango fairly ripe (that's a good thing). Kook Kai's was my second experience with Thai food, and it was a great one! We started with the wontons--super delicious and full of flavor. For our main dishes, we tried the Pad Thai noodles with both duck and chicken. I'm personally not a fan of duck, so I didn't enjoy that as much, but my boyfriend really liked it. For dessert, we had the mango sticky rice, which was absolutely delightful. The service was a bit slow, but that's understandable as they seemed to be understaffed. That said, the staff treated us more warmly than many Michelin or fine dining restaurants we've been to--they really made us feel welcome. We had a lovely evening. It was quiet outside during our visit, but just a heads up: there's a road nearby, so if you go earlier in the day, it might be a bit noisier. read more

This place is situated where Thai Derm and the once Thai Pepper Kitchen used to be. It's changed hands a couple of times but overall a solid Thai spot. Also, this place and the Lamoon Thai around the corner has the best lunch specials. The new place is more modern but has all the traditional Thai offerings on their menu and a few great chef specialties that rotate often on the menu. They also have all the popular Thai drinks including Thai iced tea & coffee here as well. My favorite here is the Crispy Duck Basil and Pad Thai with beef, although I normally get it with shrimp. Both dishes are solid and you can't go wrong with these standard staples here. This time around I went with the Crispy Duck Basil and a Beef Larb Salad (Num Tok). Both dishes were great with the Beef Larb Salad being the star. This dish was comprised of marinated grilled beef, sliced and tossed with red onions, scallions, and cilantro over a salad of greens in a spicy lime dressing and pepper crusted sauce over the grilled marinated beef. It was very spicy (note: you've been warned lol.), tasty and had a spicy lime dressing that was insatiable. I literally drank the leftover dressing from the plate because it was just that good! lol. Honorable Mention: The magi and sticky rice on another person's plate looked good as well and I must try on my next visit. In all, a great experience and thumbs up on the food. There are a lot of Thai restaurants around the Silver Spring downtown area but this one and another favorite, which I will not mention here gets my vote as top contenders amongst them all. ROCK. SOLID. I love me some good Thai food, and friends? I'm here to tell you that this is IT. Getting to the restaurant right now is a little tricky (lots of construction happening on Bonifant Street), but your efforts will be more than rewarded. NOTE: The restaurant is small (just a handful of tables), so you'd do well to make a reservation. Appetizers not to miss: chicken satay, spring rolls, and green papaya salad. The spring rolls are fried to absolute perfection (I've gotten them several times and they're perfect every time). The chicken satay with its delectable peanut sauce is amazing. The green papaya salad is absolutely crave-worthy and I could eat it every day. My other half got panang curry (and he got it Thai hot) and said it was the best he's ever had. My parents both got green curry -- one with shrimp and one with chicken -- and both loved it. I got Tom Yum (my all-time favorite) and it was heavenly. They have a small selection of beers (Singha, Sapporo, etc.) and wines, plus soft drinks and Thai iced tea (it's not my thing but those who love it LOVE this one). I learned of this amazing local mom/pop vibe of a restaurant from a Yelp Elite event and I've now been back on my own several times. Shout out to the employees who are always sweet, friendly, happy to answer questions, and timely with serving food. I have enjoyed every item that I've ordered here. Another really strong 4.5 stars here and I easily see this place being 5 stars and one of our favorite Thai places. IT was a lovely dinner. Strongly recommend. Everything was fresh, delicious and wonderful. The curry puffs came out toasty, crispy and fresh and were very flavorful. They were some of the best we've had, just give them a few minutes to cool down. The Crab Wontons were lovely and I'm very intrigued by the "no cream cheese" option. The duck curry got rave reviews and was amazing for leftovers. The Thai Ginger was fresh and great as well, I just wanted a little more bite from the ginger. But that's a minor nitpick. Cozy homey but modern decor, good service, physically distanced, good food. Across the street from Pepper Thai is the Mandalay (Burmese restaurant) which is terrible: still not open for dining in; do not pick up their phone; store front half boarded up (though offering take out). This Thai place is much better: airy and bright. See my photos: we love their decors. The entrance area could double for that of a chic furniture store! We were able to book a reservation on their own website. Papaya salad is good; comes with shrimps (a pleasant surprise). The crispy duck with basil (their signature chef specialty) was flavorful and crispy. Reasonably priced. Crispy tofu appetizer is standard and good. When we first got here there was no other guest; just us, one table. It was a Thursday night (6:30 pm), and they slowly got busy (3 other tables of guests arrived later). The restaurant reached out to me and it seems that they took my concerns very seriously. They offered to make things right and they did just that. The food was exactly the way that I enjoyed it on my first visit and I was very pleased Hopefully, whatever issues they had during my previous visit have been worked out and they will be able to offer consistently delicious food from this point onward. My husband and I saw this place on a walk around the neighborhood. We finally tried out a few items. The staff was so cute for adding little drawings on the containers! Very nice touch We tried a spicy eggplant with chicken and drunken noodles with tofu. The spicy eggplant was good, no complaints, but the drunken noodles weren't the best I've ever had. The noodles were all bunched up together. They were on the bottom of the container with tofu with onions (too many of them), tofu, and red peppers on top. It was hard to get a bite of everything since the noodles were on the bottom. Taste wise it wasn't bad, but just not what I was expecting. Wow I have lived in silver spring less than 5 minutes walking distance from this place and I am just now finding this gem. This place is tucked away on a road that has been getting worked on way too long. I order take out. The packaging was fantastic. Hot food. Cute message on bag!!! This has to be the best Thai food in downtown silver spring. I ordered the Thai tea, Satay, spring rolls, basil fried rice with chicken, and the catfish gone wild. Everything tasted fresh and so so so delicious. I was a little nervous to try the catfish dish but it was SO GOOD. The customer service was so great. The staff is friendly! I will be back. We ended up here because Sweet Sweet Kitchen was opening later than normal, it was too cold to wait, and we'd been saying we needed to find a good Thai place, and I remembered this was on my try-list. I'm glad we got a chance, because it was very good. I really liked the chicken satay and my shrimp pad see ew, though I'd probably go back to tofu for the latter next time because tofu sucks up the sauce better than shrimp does. This dish tends to not have a huge variation from restaurant to restaurant, so it tasted pretty much exactly like I expected. Re the satay: the chicken was grilled and had been seasoned with something akin to curry powder, it was very tasty dipped in the peanut sauce and would also be very tasty on its own. Hubby liked his tom kha soup but said he'd probably order that one without chicken next time because the chicken in that wasn't really seasoned. I had a sip of the broth though and it had a lot more flavor than you'd guess from looking at it, since it looked kind of just like milk, but it was very tangy and not spicy. I would have ordered it if I hadn't wanted to try the satay. Or if I just wanted to make a meal of satay and soup. Hubby also got panang curry with chicken, and the flavors were on point. Marylanders would find it spicy, we did not. It's a little thinner / soupier texture than we prefer, we tend to like a more viscous curry. But dumping rice in it sops up the curry and I'd rather have flavor w/o texture than the reverse. I would order this dish, and then maybe thicken it at home with some corn starch slurry. The restaurant is very cute inside, and when the weather is nice there are several tables on the patio out front. I didn't try the thai iced tea because it was sub-freezing out. They brought water that was warm and I appreciated that. Prices were very reasonable, and portions on the entrees very generous. (We got two meals out of each.). This may become our go-to Thai place in the area. Location isn't the best for mid-week unfortunately due to downtown parking constraints, so we will have to see if there's a delivery option. read more

This place was originally Ruang Khao Thai when I moved in and then became Thai Pepper Kitchen and it newly became Kook Kai's Thai Noodles. I ordered for my wife and I on UberEats on Tuesday and the food was impressive and perhaps even better than before. We shared the Spring Rolls, Fried Banana, Tom Kha Soup with Chicken, and the Drunken Noodles with Beef for dinner. We had the leftover Duck Curry for lunch the next day. The portions were very generous and the Drunken Noodles was spicier than other restaurants which we loved but I'm sure you can ask for the food to be less spicy. Unfortunately I have to leave a negative review here. We ordered from Uber Eats. While the food was ready pretty fast, the quality wasn't great and it wasn't good value. The portions were very small. It's almost like they ran out of ingredients. Our veggie Pad Thai had almost no veggies, just a few slices of carrots and a couple of cabbage leaves. The mango coconut rice desert was not good either. The rice was hard. Usually there would be sweet coconut cream drizzle over the mango rice. We had none of that. I found this place through a google search when I was looking for best Thai food near me. After browsing the menu, I saw 'catfish gone wild' as a popular item. Normally I stick to what I know when it comes to Thai food but I was feeling a bit adventurous that day and decided to step out of the norm. I went to pick it up and the shop is small, but has a cute set up. The food was very hearty and robust in flavor. Definitely enough for 2 people, it is a heavy dish. I don't think they included enough rice for the amount of sauce. I wouldn't be opposed to trying other things on the menu. read more

I love Larb Gai and this is the reason I came here to eat; I saw it listed on their menu thru Yelp. It was delicious!!! We wanted to love this place so much as we've been looking for a good Thai place and it's literally across the street from us (we've been to Thailand so maybe we have high expectations or just need the real stuff) this wasn't it. We ordered beef Pad Thai, it wasn't good. The beef was a bit stringy, the sauce wasn't sweet at all and the flavor wasn't there. They put a bunch of scallions, bean sprouts and crushed peanuts on top of it... like a whole bunch. Second, we got the sesame chicken.. the chicken was covered in breading, there wasn't enough sauce at all so it was completely dry, the meat was dried out and overall it tasted like it was over cooked which was disappointing. The best thing we ordered and we would recommend is the fried bananas (dessert). They were fried perfectly and a great portion plus the honey dipping sauce it came with was thick and you could tell had real honey. Overall, unfortunately we wouldn't order here again. The food just did not taste good at all, I'm actually surprised at the previous reviews because that's what I was going by. Also, for these three items our bill was almost $40 so way too expensive for the quality and amount of food. No pictures were taken because we were hungry and it wasn't good. read more
