We liked our first dinner at Charm Thai. Our experience was casual and good. The Pad Thai with Chicken was reliably enjoyable. The seasoning on the noodles was more red than brown and I liked the sweeter flavor. I've had this style of Pad Thai before and it seems more authentic. I enjoyed that the sauce wasn't too much or 'goopy.' In other words, it wasn't too thick or strong. We ordered an extra side of thin rice noodles to add to our Pad Thai. It was $4 for a small bowl, but I might have preferred a larger portion for that price. As with others reviews, the basic garden salad was one step up with yellow peppers, red peppers, tomatoes, onions and delightful version of the traditional Thai peanut sauce. The portion size makes this garden salad worth the $9.95 price point. We loved the mango with sticky rice dessert. It was so delicious with the thick, sweet coconut rice sauce and sesame seed (I think) garnish. read more

Omg! Was here previous for take out and got the Red Curry. It did not disappoint. Came back to dine in. This time got the Pad Ka Pow. The lunch special cannot be beat. Ordered this on UberEats as my last meal of 2024! Delivery was prompt and the food was still hot upon arrival. We ordered spring rolls, drunken noodles, the pad see ew, and the pad thai. It was solid thai food - especially for delievery. My fave out of the all three was the drunken noodles because of the spice. The noodles for the drunken noodles and pad see ew were a little more cooked than I would like, but the overall taste of the dishes were still fine. I saved up my money to order Ubereats to get what used to be my favorite dish: Drunken Noodles with added cashews. It was as if it was made yesterday and warmed up today (see photo) I requested medium spicy and it was barely mild... Then I had a taste for cashew chicken but decided to order fried tofu instead of chicken; the entire dish had NO FLAVOR! I ordered spice level 4/5 and there was barely any flavor to it. (1/5 stars) Plus the onion was cut in such large pieces and all of the food tasted as if it was thrown together. I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times, all the best Thai restaurants in the DC area are in Virginia. Having said that, Charm Thai isn't bad, but despite it's a seemingly above average menu that at first glance got me excited for nothing we ordered "wowed' me. I had the standard go-to Thai basil chicken with a fried egg over the rice. My partner ordered his go-to, which is a crab fried rice (or some variation thereof), and we shared a papaya salad. Overall, it was fine but nothing was good enough that I would want to go back twice. The basil chicken was too sweet, my partner's fried rice lacked flavor, and the papaya salad wasn't diced thinly enough. Having said that, if you are craving some Thai food that is slightly better than your average Thai food that is designed for the "American palate" then do give Charm Thai a try. I do feel bad for the restaurant though, due to the construction on the street in front of It, I think business is down so I did want to support the restaurant. Give it a try! read more

Charming indeed. This little hole in the wall a couple of doors down from the old Post Office would not have caught my attention but for a rebate offer from Upside. Definitely worth it. Volcano soup, despite the name, has just a nice tickle of heat. With shrimp, scallops, squid, fresh mushrooms, and tomatoes in a rich stock with coconut milk and cilantro, the addition of some rice or noodles would make it a fine lunch. Noodles Lover was a fun special. Huge, flat noodles much like southern chicken and pastry, in another complex, nicely balanced broth, with seafood, vegetables, and fried tofu. The white fungus, much like the black fungus/tree ear often seen in Chinese soups, is there for appearance and texture rather than flavor. Downsides: Squid was overcooked and under flavored, and there was way too much tofu. Jasmine tea was served with the bag still in the cup. I was halfway through the meal before it was strong enough to be worth sipping. Very cordial service. Clean unisex bathroom with a keyholder that will provoke a grin. So, I was pleased but not thrilled, and I agree with the consensus 4 **** rating. If you're in downtown Silver Spring and would like to try the traditional Thai flavors without scorching your sinuses, this is a good choice. read more

Popular lunch and dinner Thai spot in the downtown Silver spring area. The food is always fresh, especially the vegetables....and delicious. Haven't had a bad plate as of yet. My go to here is the Pad Mixed Vegetables, Spicy Crispy Duck and anything Soups here!....with the Beef Noodle Soup & Mai Pha (Vegetable Noodle Soup) being my favorites. The flavors and seasoning is not skipped here. One thing I like about Charm Thai is that they are open to you customizing your dish with a little "extra this or that" and spice level. Note: The spice level is numbered 1 thru 4; with 4 being --Thai spicy and hella hot! Trust me, if you like your food spicy, you will want to stick with a Number 2 or 3 level. I tried a Number 4 spice level once....My mouth was on fire and I was sweating bullets!! lol The vibe is laid back, in an open eating space with a few sitting tables mostly in the front of the restaurant. Although there is inside dining, it appears that this place is a popular takeout and DoorDash / Uber Eats destination. There was an endless flow of customers and delivery drivers stopping by to pickup orders while I was here. The prices are reasonable and the service is quick --super friendly. There is a lunch special to save you a few bucks and monthly chef specials where new/seasonal menu items are offered as well. A "no-fail" meal option imho....when in this area of town. One evening, during a visit to my parents' place in Silver Spring, I took my Thai food-obsessed mother here for dinner. It was the coldest night in December, so when we walked in and were greeted with glorious heat, cheery holiday decorations, and broad smiles from the owners, we were warmed instantly. We both started with warm mugs of chrysanthemum tea (delightful!) and dove into the menu to make our selections. Mom settled on Tom Kha and green curry (I have never been to any Thai joint with her when this was not her order) and I ordered their Volcano soup--Shrimp, Scallop, Squid, mushroom, tomato and cilantro in a spicy & sour lemongrass milk broth and--and because there are few things I love (and because it was frigid cold out)--I also got an order of Tom Yum. Mom inhaled her dishes and said both were excellent (her nose was getting all athletic, so they were definitely spicy, too). The Volcano soup--and I've never had anything like it--was absolutely incredible. Divine. Luscious. It's a month later and breakfast time and I want another bowl right now. The Tom Yum (among my favorite things in life) was beautiful, spicy perfection. The service was quick and friendly, and our waiter (who I think was the owner) was all smiles and helpful. The space is small--there was a steady stream of DoorDash/Uber Eats drivers going in and out, so they seem to do a big takeout business--just a few tables, but the space is warm and comfortable. Charm Thai has been my go-to takeout place for Thai as of lately. I've never actually been in the restaurant and have only ordered delivery but they are always consistent. First, i love their dumplings! They have such a wonderful flavor! For entree, I usually get the drunken noodles or the panang, which is the coconut curry. I also like the Pad See Ew. Their noodles are delicious and the coconut curry is so flavorful! My boyfriend always gets the spicy duck and has never been disappointed. We have now ordered from Charm Thai a few times and we have found a few things that we liked but there are definitely some things we didn't liked! Let's start with the good so we will go with some of our favs. The Mama Kee Mao, Pad Kee Mao and Basil Pork Crispy Mama are all favs in this house. The flavors hit the spot and although we request mild each time, this dish is still packed with a punch! These have become our go to when ordering take out! With that being said, there were a few that just didn't quite hit the mark with us! The curry puffs, Gaeng Ped Yang just didn't do it. There was just no flavor the both dishes fell flat! We plan to try out a few others and hope to have some of the luck we have had with some of our fav dishes! It's the kind of generic Thai restaurant one is used to. All of the usual staples are there, all done well, nothing bad, nothing spectacular. Where I think they stand out some is that their online menu has photos! Want to order something but aren't sure what it looks like? Charm Thai has you covered. The food (I got drunken noodles) was just kind of generic tasting, not rich in flavor and spices. I ordered delivery on a Friday evening - expecting a prime time kitchen offering up flavor to be on point. No chili oil, not enough vegetables in the fried rice and questioned the server who now said only one single floret of broccoli is put in a bowl of vegetable fried rice. This restaurant is a bit inconsistent, but can be great if you know what to get. The regular Thai menu has several disappointing and bland dishes, such as the pad thai, curries, drunken noodles, etc. Even if asked for extra spicy, the food on the regular menu still tends to come out mainly tasting of oil and salt. Where their food really shines is from their Lao menu (listed as "E Saan Thai Baan" on their website and menu). Their Lao dishes are extremely spicy and full of complex flavors - for example, even the papaya salad off the Lao menu was almost too spicy to eat, with a unique blend of flavors in the tomatoes, Thai eggplant, garlic, lime, and fermented fish sauce. This menu is mostly dishes that aren't found in Thai restaurants, but they're delicious. When ordering off the E-Saan menu, be wary of order anything extra spicy, because they will not hold back. read more

I placed an order through Grubhub and was a bit disappointed that I did not receive what I ordered. I decided to go with the Mai Pha Soup, but I paid extra for a serving of crispy pork. The soup was about $8 and the cost of the crispy pork was an additional $4. I have to say that it's kind of annoying paying a bunch of delivery-associated fee only not to receive what you've ordered. I probably could have (or should have) complained to the restaurant. I did not think that it would make much sense because I did not feel like waiting another hour for the soup that I actually ordered. Something will ALWAYS be wrong with the order, whether you receive something completely different, get something substituted without warning, receive very low portions, receive spicy food even though that's not stated anywhere for that dish, missing items, or receive the wrong dish. I understand things happen and you run out of ingredients, but a courtesy call would have been nice to let me make the decision of substitutions or just ordering something different. My first #supportlocalbusinesses upon moving to the downtown silver spring area, it just had to be thai. And I'm so glad there are so many thai options here! I'm going to have so much fun once the quarantine is over lol. Charm Thai caught my attention mainly because of the reviews and rating, it seemed better than the others but you know I'll be trying them all anyway. I ordered a bunch load for my #quarantineeats via delivery. I got the Pad Thai with pork, and two appetizers: Hoi Jor and Curry Puff. I have to say I am impressed by their pricing - appetizers were only $6.95 each and the pad thai was $10.95 (yes it was a big portion too!) Hoi Jor was sort of a shu mai-type dumpling esque that came with a sweet chili sauce (that I may or may not have also drizzled a little over my pad thai because it was so good) and the curry puffs resembled large crispy flaky samosas with potato curry. The curry puffs themselves were probably my least favorite, still good but a little sweet and at first got me confused thinking they were a dessert instead of an appetizer. They also came with a dipping sauce and having that kind of offset the sweetness of the puff. The pad thai was LARGE. I probably ate it for 3-4 meals. I eat a lot. I'm attaching a close up picture. If you're seeing some of the other pictures and it looks really red to you, it is. It's super red, maybe from the tamarind paste they use, but it's not sweet in my opinion as I've had pad thai from places like Asia Nine in downtown Crown where the noodles are so red and taste so sweet I'm thinking whether they used ketchup for the sauce. My comment on the pad thai is that while it was good, I wish it came with more meat, and maybe some bean sprouts or something to spruce it up. People may disagree, if you like simple no BS pad thai noodles with pork just like that, you will like this pad thai. There was barely much scrambled egg in it. Just noodles and pork. I can tell that I would enjoy this restaurant if I had the full experience of dining in, which is why I gave them 5 stars. Looking to try that delicious thai tea float hopefully soon. read more
