The food was great, especially the Cry Baby Noodles and the Flank Steak Jungle Lover. Both dishes had a lot of flavor and were definitely worth ordering again. The service was attentive, and the whole restaurant had a fun, welcoming energy. My favorite part was the ambiance, especially the cherry blossom decor, which made the space feel lively and really pretty. I didn't try any cocktails this time, but the drinks looked really good, so that's on my list for next time. I'd definitely recommend Dok Khao and would come back. read more

Dok Khao is part of the redevelopment of Chevy Chase, in a planned neighborhood of residences and "eateries" (one of my least favorite words). Parking is in a garage that supposedly offers two hours of free parking, but I must have missed the cut off coz I still had to pay. Not a great option if you want take it slow. The restaurant itself is all hard surfaces and shiny decor, a corporate feel. The food was okay, nicely spiced. Our dishes included curry puff and tofu appetizers, the house pad Thai, and the Jungle Adventure. But it was not particularly adventurous eating. I'm sure there is a constituency for this kind of place, but it's not me. read more

We ordered the Pad Thai, Panang Curry and Fried Pork (over sauced). HITS: Restaurant ambiance, inviting bar area, fast food service. MISSES: Place settings, oddly, included fork and spoon, but no knife (making it tough to cut anything to eat) .. this was accentuated by the intermittent service after food was delivered to the table. Me and a friend went here for a nightcap. I saw the restaurant on Resy and knew immediately I wanted to check it out. The bar and overall restaurant is gorgeous -a Social Media dream. The food was so well presented and it tasted fantastic to boot! We joined for their grand opening so they were rolling out the red carpet for their guests! They gave out a pretty good mocktail to everyone in the restaurant, what made the mocktail special was the piece of young coconut in the drink. They gave out free appetizers to everyone as well, which was pretty good. The owner, a sweet woman gave the appetizers out to everyone and the manager gave out the drinks. The bartenders were nice too! The only thing I would criticize is the delivery was really odd. Some mannerisms of the staff were kind of odd. Not that they're bad or anything, but they were just off. But, I mean just check-out our Thai Tea bingsoos, definitely worth getting! Will definitely come back to try some dishes. Food not good. Service is fairly quick. Lovely interior. Phone orders can be frustrating, with unnecessary back and forth, plus poor quality connection. Wait times were very long when they first opened not long ago. When they first opened, food was much better. Now food isn't great. Even something as simple as Tom Yum soup is no better than dishwasher with spices. They don't seem to take any interest in quality control. I liked Dok Khao for what it is: a pretty place to eat decent Thai. The decor is indeed beautiful: High ceilings, lots of floral decor, a fountain in the middle, and green & gold tones reminiscent of a British afternoon tea parlor. Is it the best, most authentic and affordable? No. Service was a mix of attentive and not. We finished an early dinner in under an hour and one server did always ask how the food was once we were served, but there were several times we were looking to flag down our server and just could not get a hold of them. So for the food: - Healthy Appetizer - This was my least favorite dish because it was so loosely wrapped that everything fell out and apart as soon as you took a bite. I also didn't enjoy having minced chicken in the rolls versus bigger pieces of chicken. - Phuket Chili Crab - The pumpkin was nice and soft and I enjoyed the curry. The legs of the soft shell crab were nice and crispy but the body of the crab was very a bit mushy and on the verge of not being ok to be served (i.e. the super seafood taste) - Fried Banana & Coconut Milk Ice Cream - The fried banana was nice and hot and crispy, but it tasted more like vanilla ice cream and less like coconut milk ice cream; I could not taste any "coconut" in the ice cream Overall decent Thai eats for Chevy Chase *They do validate parking, thank you read more

New Dok Khao in Chevy Chase!!! I'm a huge fan of the Columbia location so I was super excited about this new location! The restaurant is beautiful--well lit with green walls and flower decors all around. The bar looks nice too! Food did not disappoint! The portions are generous, prices are reasonable and the food is WELL FLAVORED. The menu is quite extensive so you have many options to pick from! Started off with Steamed Dumplings and Tom Yum Soup. For entrees, HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Shrimp Pad Thai and Spicy Minced Chicken on Rice!! The Sesame Ginger Beef was good too--marinated tender flank steak but had a sweet kick to it. Cocktails here are AMAZING--pretty and picture worthy--I love their Lychee Martini. The others enjoyed their DK Old Fashion and Purple Rain too. One thing that needs improvement is their table seating timing--we had reservations and still had to wait about 20 mins to even be seated. The host (or manager, not sure) offered us a complimentary dessert, which was a nice gesture--we picked the Sweet Sticky Rice & Mango which was delicious! I cannot say enough good things about this incredibly tasty spot!! The moment you walk in the door, it feels like a photographer's dream. I just wanted to take all the pictures I could! The bar is stunning to look at as well. We had a wonderful server who was very attentive. My friend and I ordered their non alcoholic drinks which were delicious! I had the Chaces Royal and my friend had the Garden Party. We started off with chicken satay which was very nice. Chicken had a nice flavor and was very light. Enjoyed the peanut sauce! I ordered the Kaprow with soft tofu, extra hot. And my friend ordered the drunken noodles with chicken very very mild. Each of our dishes were fabulous. Love this new Thai restaurant up on Connecticut in the Ritz Carlton development. It's a big and bustling place, filled with bright colors, gold, and a gorgeous bar. It's also filled with diners and jam packed. We had the larb gai, spicy and beautiful, dumplings, tom yum soup with chicken, pad see ew with chicken, green curry, flank steak salad, and chicken kapow. Everything was great, though the soup seemed a bit duller than all the other dishes. Cocktails were gorgeous and delicious. Next time we'll eat at the bar. read more

Came here for a work dinner. Love the aesthetic and the drinks. Food tasted amazing and as someone from California it was reasonably priced. There was people walking around frequently to refill our waters and check in on us. Everything came really quick. I got dessert to go and it was delicious in my hotel room. I've eaten here twice and I don't even have pictures of the food because I devour it immediately. Everything is so flavorful, with good portions. The menu is massive. We came here last minute around 8pm day after Xmas, too lazy to cook but hungry, and they were one of the few places open. Based on the location you know it's gonna be a bit pricier but the inside was so beautifully decorated for the holidays and the restaurant is clean and lively. There were several other tables dining there. We ordered their special pad Thai and the fried chicken (can't remember the names!) but not was deep with flavor and very nice. The chicken was mild-medium spicy per the staff and it has a very nice kick, balanced out by the rice and veggies. They have a very big dessert and drinks menu and while we didn't end up getting any this time, we'll certainly be back for them! read more

We tried to go to the location in Columbia and it was so busy that we couldn't wait over an hour to eat since we have little ones. So when they opened the chevy chase location, we had to give it a try. I wasn't a big fan of parking situation since it was tight in garage but at least it was easy to get to. My first impression of the restaurant was how pretty it looks! The decor is nice and makes you feel like a super high-end restaurant. We got seated and ordered some apps and main dishes between 4 adults. Food didn't take too long to come out except for one dish that they might have forgotten. Everything was decent, nothing too exceptional. the price was expensive but it was expected since we looked at menu ahead of time. We probably will not come back here since we have other places in rockville area that is pretty comparable in quality and cheaper. But it was nice to try it once. read more

The crab fried rice with added shrimp was okay, and my friend's noodle with chicken dish missed the mark, but the manager handled it well. I usually go to the Columbia location, which is always delicious. Tried this one and it was just okay. Appetizers (Bangkok wings and calamari) came out warm, not hot -- possibly premade or frozen. OK, so this was our first time at Dok Khao in Chevy Chase. I specialize in reviewing the growing number of Thai restaurants in the area and Dok Khao can definitely be described as being in what I would call the upscale, and higher priced, segment. The ambiance reflects this -- this is a beautiful place with chandeliers, a bar area and when we visited the restaurant was packed. So, since opening it has obviously built a loyal following. Located on the corner of this new development, parking is a bit challenging for newcomers as the main garage entrance is around in back, a right turn off of Manor Rd, and parking for retail is farther back once your inside. The good news is 2 hours free parking with validation. Service was excellent -- we were attended to in good time and by a waiter who was able to give us his recommendations for the best dishes. I'll focus on 3 dishes, one that I ordered, another my wife had, and another that our friends had. From the Chef's Special list, the Lamb Massaman Curry was absolutely out of the park superb. I would put it on my list of all-time best dishes I have ever had at any Thai restaurant anywhere. With large chunks with onion and potato, wonderful moist and not overdone lamb, peanuts, carrots, coconut milk, topped with fried shallots and served with curry fried rice and egg, this was an absolute 10. My wife had a noodle dish (Crying or Cry Baby....) that was very good, I would rate at an 7 or 8. Our friends had Pad Thai, which while pretty good was not quite up to the versions that can be found elsewhere in the area. One of our dinner companions remarked that it needed more fish sauce flavor and my assessment was that it lacked that certain "zing" that Pad Thai can ideally have while not overdoing things in the fish sauce area. It would be nice, generally speaking, to see restaurants providing more green onions/scallion with this dish as one would see in Thailand. I did have one of the cold drinks on the menu, Lychee Iced Tea, which I found to be quite enjoyable. A number of reviews of Dok Khao in Chevy Chase complain about the food lacking flavor, but others give this place 5 stars. I'll be going back to sample other dishes. One observation applies -- this is part of the trend of more expensive Thai restaurants in the DMV. The problem with this is that there are so many smaller superb Thai establishments that provide excellent Thai cuisine at sharply lower prices. As good as the Lamb Massman Curry was at Dok Khao, it's pushing the $30 mark when at other restaurants in the area there are superb versions of this at far below that price. I think this is something that needs to be kept in mind by all of the more upscale Thai establishments, even taking into account obviously higher prices everyone is facing now. read more

I think this place is beautiful; the vibes and the aesthetic of the place are amazing. It feels like I'm outside while being inside. The service also was amazing; our server was very friendly and attentive. There was a dish she noticed was untouched and asked if everything was okay. We got the crispy pork basil which sounded great, but the pork just had an unbearably strong smell to it so we were going to just leave it. Our server noticed and took it off the menu which was very sweet. For appetizers we got the crispy salmon rolls and the curry puffs. The curry puffs were delicious; crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and nice curry flavor (kind of like a samosa almost). The salmon rolls were not my personal cup of tea; I'm just not sure what the wonton wrapper and the fryer really did to the roll. Also completely my fault, but I think part of me was expecting the salmon to be raw even thought I knew it was going to be cooked. I think the concept was interesting but it just wasn't for me. The panang curry was good; the flavors were nice and the chicken was how it usually is. The flank steak kapow was also pretty good; nice flavors and the meat was cooked well. I think overall our experience with the food was okay; we had the one dish we couldn't eat at all, and there was nothing that I had that I loved/ stood out to me. I would still go back and try things off the chefs special menu next time though. Overall, I think for what we got, and for how the food was on the pricier end, I wasn't wowed by the food. read more

First time at Dok Khao and it was pretty standard Thai food. The drinks were decent, but you could barely taste the alcohol. Food: My friend and I shared the wings and calamari for appetizers. The wings had a thick layer of breading and were a bit too sweet for my taste. The calamari had good flavor but definitely needed to be fried harder -- I'm all about that crispy crunch. For mains, we ordered the pineapple fried rice and Thai green curry. Both were solid, but I've had better. Service: Service was mid at best. It was super packed, and the place seemed a bit understaffed. Our server forgot a few things we asked for -- hot sauce, silverware, and even water -- which was aggy. Ambiance: The decor is cute, but the space is tight. Tables are crammed together, and the waiting area is right by the entrance with zero room to move. I've been to this restaurant twice now and have really enjoyed my experience both times. The ambiance and decor in the restaurant is really cute and well done. The servers have been attentive and helpful as well. We enjoyed our meals there and the menu has plenty of options for vegetarians as well. I look forward to trying more of their foods! We went on day two. We showed up with out reservations after 7 and there was a lot of people and a 15-30 minute wait. Totally fine. We were seated in less than that. Considering they just opened things seemed to be moving along like a pretty well oiled machine. It too a bit of time to get our appetizer but worth it - the food here is excellent. The tom kha gai was perfect - not too sweet or spicy. The sweet and sour chicken was excellent as well - and the portions are not too much and just right. The decor was unique for a Thai restaurant but very nice. I wish there were some more soft surfaces as it was very loud when all the tables were full. We met the owner while there and she is a delight! So nice and caring. All in all we can't wait to go back and try more dishes. read more

We went there for lunch and ordered calamari for appetizers and it was really fresh. We then Kapow Fried Rice with chicken, Panang curry with chicken, and garlic lover with chicken. The panang curry was minimalistic with only broccoli but the flavor was amazing. I loved the curry base with fresh coconut milk. Loved the kapow fried rice, it had amazing flavors. Garlic lover had the least flavor. The service and ambience were really nice. There is a parking garage and the restaurant validates your parking ticket for 2 hrs. read more

Experiencing the grand opening with a welcome cocktail, chef-delivered amuse-bouche, and I may have met everyone that works in this establishment already. Each staff has delivered a Thai iced tea, or explained the ingredients of the order, and been very attentive to empty plates and the like. This is a gorgeous open-area space with booth/bench seating, a centered fountain, decorative bar, mirrored ceiling panes, vintage tiled floors and fantasy colored walls and drapery. Nice sized portion of 6 rolls for 2 people as an appetizer. For our main courses we ordered a duck dish and the special pad Thai, both of which were nicely flavored and beautifully presented with just enough heat. Only problem is that the table was too small for 2 couples with multiple dishes. Since I'm gluten sensitive, appreciate the dishes with thin rice noodles. Highly recommended.
