I've been here a few times & really love this place! It does get pretty busy but I've never had to wait long for a table (for two). I love ordering the vegan hash (veggie hash w no egg) & the drinks are pretty good , but definitely over priced. The service is always great & I love supporting this business. Parking can be a little tricky on the weekends, but street parking is free on Sundays. Love the decor, I just wish the bathrooms were better kept. I really wanted to come here because the dining area was so beautiful in pictures online, but upon arriving we found out there was an 1hr and 45min wait for inside. So we opted to sit outside because they said it was open and immediate seating. And we were on the last day of our vacation and planning to drive home after brunch. After getting sat outside, it took them 20mins to come outside to even speak to us. We immediately ordered since we had plenty of time to decide what we wanted. It then took an hour to get our food... ridiculous. Also, as we are sitting outside there were so many homeless people walking up and yelling at us so that was interesting. One even was coming up and asking people, including us, for money. So definitely do not sit outside if you don't want to deal with being yelled out by random people and forgotten by the wait staff. I recently got to try The Breakfast Club for a friend's birthday, and needless to say this was a one and done experience. I got to our table a few minutes after my friends had already been seated and ordered drinks, which was fine. However, we then proceeded to wait at least 15 minutes before the waiter came back to get our orders. Since we seemed to be of no urgency to our waiter I decided to go to the restroom which I definitely would've thought otherwise if I hadn't had to really go. Holes in the wall, toilet paper on the floor, liquids on the toilet seat, and a bottle of soap with no soap. Not at all what I expect in an establishment serving food with their employees using the same restrooms. We finally got our order placed after having to grab another server to flag down our waiter. One of my friends and I ordered pancakes and french toast so of course syrup would be a nice addition but was not provided. And it seemed as though every waiter tried their best to not make eye contact with us so we could ask for some syrup. I was able to grab us two sticky bottles of syrup from an employee tending the bar. And our waiter seemed to be missing in action after our food was delivered. Now I will say we all thought our meals were good, which at least was a plus. The Breakfast Club adds on an 18% gratuity to all checks with 6 people or less and 20% for more than 6, which I personally believe is why the service is so lackluster. Given the poor service and lack of cleanliness, unfortunately it doesn't matter how good the food may taste I personally don't think I would suggest The Breakfast Club for a dining experience or return for another visit myself. read more

The Breakfast Club, no not the 80s movie classic, no not the nationally syndicated morning show that sold out and went corporate and Netflix, but the Black diaspora sanctuary spot in the heart of Silver Spring off of Fenton Street is where I took my mom to for a brunch on an early Friday afternoon before Mother's Day weekend. It was awesome to see the diversity of the diaspora from the African continent (East and West Africa) the Caribbean/Latin America, and America all in one safe space enjoying themselves without the performative and obnoxiousness from others I would give them that. The Billy Holliday mural and the interior design has a nice sleek, New American vibe. My problem is the service, the cost, and the food although solid, I cooked a brunch the following day myself not to brag (scrambled eggs and cheese, friend potatoes with diced green peppers and onions) that was masterful in comparison to the gingerbread style big ole French toast and fancy "scrambled eggs and cheese" this spot has. The service charge was ridiculous as my mom's bill was 70 plus bucks for just the seafood shrimp and grits which was nice, a very sweet pre-diabetic lemonade, and bread pudding that was like bougie Georgetown prices with the dominant culture. I paid 40 dollars (Hairstylist from Baby Boy!) for French toast, scrambled eggs with cheese and lemonade. The food is nice and all but nothing to die for. We came for the vibe, culture, and atmosphere also, but we do prefer the chains of Dennys and I-hop if I am not doing the cooking which is most of the time. The server would dirty mack and take a while flirting with women at the bar and playing around with staff, and I had to give a clinical gaze with my glasses and hand signal for him to return. We did ask up front about service charge and gratuity included from the beginning but they have a very Southern slow pace here that I agree with others and I am a very patient man and notice that. It can take a while to get your checks, get change, just other tasks that you would think would be handled more efficiently. The place attracts the social media crowd, with professional pictures, the glitz, the glamor the Hollywood red carpet of the DMV, but the structural integrity of the pricing, service, and experience needs to step its game up in the worst way. We certainly see this place being a bit turned up and precarious in later hours. The closest parking that is reliable enough is the Safeway garage so it is not the most convenient, where as at least Matchbox has the Wayne and Colesville garages to park at and then enter. It was nice to support the Black owned establishment but it is a 1 and done spot. Majic 102.3 put in the hype a couple of years ago, but I found the truth, no thanks, it is a performative culture that still has that ole Georgia Ave. street culture. read more

I've been meaning to come here for some time now because of all the raving reviews, so I'm glad I finally got a reservation! When I've tried to book a reservation in the past, every weekend time slot was booked two to three weeks out - so that shows how popular this restaurant is. While dining in, the area was pretty crowded and also very loud, so if you're looking for a quieter restaurant, this isn't really the place. I did come on a Sunday afternoon, so it may be quieter during the weekday. To start, I ordered the early morning sunrise mocktail, which was really good. I was pretty hungry this day, so I ordered their home fries to munch on before my meal came. They were okay - nothing really special. For my main meal, I ordered the seafood grits, and it was absolutely amazing. I most definitely recommend. They do not skimp when it comes to the seafood! I had an amazing experience at The Breakfast Club in Downtown Silver Spring! The food was excellent, the drinks were great, and the atmosphere was energetic and welcoming. A special thank you to our server, G, who provided outstanding service throughout our visit. G was attentive, friendly, and made sure our table was well taken care of from beginning to end. I also want to recognize Antonio and Brian behind the bar. Both were professional, personable, and made fantastic drinks while keeping the energy high. Found this place as a lunch spot on my way to my birthday hair appt. I had to try oxtail fried rice because wow what a combination! The menu here has so many showstoppers however so I see myself returning. The dish was huge and tasty, however the oxtails weren't meaty so it felt like I was eating a lot of fat. "It's just going to keep on doing this, there's nothing we can do about it right now". ... right now! Right now! Then when? We're here now ma'am. I just did an Abbott Elementary stare as I could not believe the audacity. This did not mimick the great customer service rec'd during my last visit to this place. Hubby and I came here for brunch on a Sunday with another couple of friends. Hubby ordered their vanilla bean French toast and I ordered their omelette with added lobster. Balance came out to approximately $54. What's hot - Quality. Excellent. My omelette was delicious. It had a good amount of fillings of vegetables, and the additional lobster I ordered. No skimping. The sauce on the omelette had a wonderful kick, similar to Cajun with a very slightly spicy kick. It went nicely with everything. My husband's French toast was thick and substantive. Our friend's chocolate chip pancakes were good. She said it had whipped cream, rather than a slab of butter on top of her pancakes, which she preferred. Her husband's fried chicken was tender and not overly battered. - Location. Fairly easy to find with many other businesses on the area. Convenient. - Automatic gratuity. There's an 18% service charge included in every balance, which is listed on the bottom of their menu. I appreciate that it's disclosed on their menu, rather than surprised on us at the time we pay our tab. What's not - Service. Lacking. First, the other couple who was with us ended up getting their orders first. Nothing wrong with that. The orders for my husband and I came out well over 10 minutes later. We had to ask for an update on our orders, while we were waiting, and no one provided us with one. Second, when the host seated us, he told us there is a 90 minute seating time. He didn't explain to us what that meant. I asked the waiter who took our order what that meant. Specifically, I asked him if we'll get kicked out if we take more than 90 minutes, to which he responded no, and he did not know anything about a 90 minute seating time. Not customer service friendly. - Pictures. They have a staffer going around and taking pictures of diners. I asked the gentleman if he was taking pictures for their website. Turns out he returns with the pictures framed and tries charging you $20 for each picture. Had we known of this, we wouldn't have taken the pictures to begin with. This type of activity should be disclosed in the beginning, rather than asking us to take pictures without knowing the purpose. - Acoustics. Terrible. First, they play music really loudly- too loud to carry a conversation even with a small table of 4. Second, around noon, they had a live singer, who had difficulty managing her sound with the speaker. That meant her speaker kept going in and out with static noise. Everything was so loud. This is a restaurant, not a bar, club, or lounge. I did not come for the sound, but for sharing good food with others and have a conversation. The ambiance and acoustics do not allow for that. - Parking. There is parking in the area, which is a combination of paid and unpaid. - Credit card charge. To be fair, the credit charge is listed on the bottom of their menu. However, be aware there is a 3% additional charge if you use a credit card. - Price. Value for food is excellent value, but in combination with the aforementioned negatives, not good value for money. The resturant is beautiful there was only 3 other people seated when my party of 5 came in. It took about 15/20 min before someone asked what we wanted to drink. By then we were hungry and thirsty and put everything in at once. We require a Caesar salad which normally would come before the mean but it came with everything else. The salad was . . . Disgusting. It was more mayonnaise than Caesar and more cheese than lettuce. They added eggs on top which just didn't give it the greatest look or make much sense. Less dressing more romaine lettuce not iceberg not as much cheese are the improvements. It took about 45min to 50 min to get our main course from the time we ordered but all the food came out very hot and fresh. French toast and chicken perfection! Steak and eggs with potatoes phenomenal. Shrimp and grits, just needed a bit more Cajun/seafood seasoning to it. The branzino, fried rice, and broccolini delicious. The mac and cheese was very good. They didn't have sweet tea or unsweetened tea or Coke Zero which sucked but it does save you calories !! The main issue is the automatic gratuity of 18% and a 3% card fee. We had an hour wait and I was hoping it was worth it, it wasn't bad....but. Our servers were great, shoutout to Ms. P. But we ordered the lamb chops which came out with our other entrees but not with the seafood Mac and cheese as a side. That seafood Mac and cheese (the main reason we came btw, came about 40 minutes AFTER the main course). I didn't even get to taste it because I was full and over the wait. We ended up getting it to go. Due to this mishap, they did comp the seafood Mac and cheese, so that was nice. They also were nice enough to give us some complementary tequila shots for this error. That was really nice! On another note, my oxtail fried rice was pretty good. The oxtail was falling off the bone. The fried rice has way too many eggs in it, but it was solid otherwise. I do with I could just order the oxtail solo from the fried rice (the other option is with grits, but oxtail by itself is sometimes all you need). The food and the drinks are a solid 4, but the customer service unfortunately was a 2 or 3 at best. The hostess was very mean and stern, making it very clear that she was about doing the bare minimum. The menus at our table were sticky and icky, making me wonder what else they failed to wipe down. No one was answering the phone when we called to say we would be a few minutes late. We were a party of 3 and the waitress managed to bring everyone's food out in a timely manner, but mysteriously kept forgetting my best friend's food and her mocktail. At first, we just thought that the waitress was busy and perhaps got distracted, but when it happened a 2nd time with her beverage, it definitely brought the dining experience down. We are trying to wait for her food to come, before we start eating. The waitress was very nonchalant and barely apologetic about this. Why, because the gratuity is added in automatically at 18%. I enjoyed the French 75 cocktail and the tender and plentiful oxtails with fried rice. I took home the bread pudding served with vanilla ice cream, which was very good and the portion was large enough for two people. Everyone has been telling me that The Breakfast Club is a must-visit when you're in Silver Spring, so this weekend I had a chance to go with my coworker. I found parking right in front of the restaurant, which is metered but I didn't end up paying. When I arrived I told the hostesses I was waiting for someone to arrive. I was seated but was told our 90-minute dining time would start. I mentioned they were close by and as I was going to go back to wait by the door, the gentleman said it was ok and seated me without worrying about time. The ambiance was modern with a sense of flair, and the Billie Holiday painting was breathtaking. I already knew going in I was ordering the oxtail and grits, and I never even thought or heard of that combination before. I ordered the Tales of the Caribbean to drink and the Fenton Street wings to start. My coworker also ordered a drink and appetizer, along with her entree. Where the confusion occurred is when a different waiter brought out my entree first, and then someone else brought out their drink. We both looked at each other in disbelief. After some time, I was able to waive our waiter down and let him know what happened. He rushed to the back and brought out my drink (which he said had been sitting there) and then the rest of our orders came out. Tales of the Caribbean is a drink bursting with flavor, as the aged rum, coconut rum, orange bitters, mango, pineapple, allspice, cinnamon, and ginger create a sophisticated cocktail experience. The wings were disproportionately sized, as the first 4 were your normal-sized buffalo wings, but the last 2 were gigantic drums. The flavor from the sauce was out of this world, and the wings were cooked and crispy beautifully. The oxtail and grits lived up to the hype. The oxtail gravy mixed in with the grits introduced me to a flavor I never knew I needed in my life. The oxtail was bone-in, but the meat was tender and flavorful. Sanitation department please go and visit this place. The unisex bathroom was dirty, no soap which makes me wonder how the cooks are washing their hands while making my food. The tap water was extremely hot so with no soap or water in the bathroom how is the staff washing their hands. Food was overcooked, server got our order wrong. At the end they automatically charge a tip although bad service but they don't tell you so you tip them even more. The Breakfast Club in Silver Spring ended up being a pleasant surprise and a solid brunch spot. We went around 1:00 PM on a Saturday and were finished by about 2:30 PM. One small hiccup at the start was that Google showed the restaurant as closed when it was actually open, which was a bit confusing. We originally planned to go to Society Restaurant and Bar, but they were closed due to basement renovations for the next couple of months. Luckily, a local Silver Spring resident let us know that The Breakfast Club was open, and we are glad they did. When we arrived, we were greeted at the door and asked if we had reservations. We didn't, but we were seated right away at a table for two. The restaurant wasn't busy at all and had a very calm, relaxed vibe, which made for an enjoyable brunch experience. We started with the Fenton Street wings, which came with six pieces and were so good. The Uncle J's sauce was a standout with a perfect sweet and savory combination that honestly had me wishing we ordered more. The wings were fried to perfection with a nice crispy crunch on the outside while staying juicy on the inside. I meant to take a photo, but they disappeared way too fast. I ordered the chicken biscuit sandwich with scrambled eggs and cheese. The biscuit itself was incredibly tender and fluffy, and it came with crispy potatoes that rounded out the meal nicely. However, the sandwich also came with a Cajun cream butter sauce that was extremely salty, which took away from the overall balance of the dish. My boyfriend had The Collegiate, a skillet hash with crispy potatoes, oxtails on top, and scrambled eggs with cheese. It was savory, hearty, and very satisfying. I also ordered a drink called The Great Gatsby with cognac and tequila. It was really good, well balanced, and the garnish was aesthetically pleasing. Our server, Jas, was very sweet and had great energy. While she didn't check on us as often as we would have liked, the service was still good overall and did not take away from the experience. Between the calm atmosphere, flavorful food, and solid drinks, The Breakfast Club is definitely worth checking out if you are in the Silver Spring area. I doubled back to the Breakfast Club and boy did they perform. I made reservations for a birthday brunch for my wife on a Monday and it was surprisingly empty. We arrived and were quickly seated. We ordered several dishes. Oxtail Fried Rice, Chicken and French Toast, Seafood Grits. Those seafood grits are GREAT!!!!! Delicious!!! The French Toast is LARGE and delicious as well. The chicken are definitely large pieces. There is good crunch but something is missing for me with the chicken. My wife enjoyed the oxtail as they give you a good portion. She enjoyed it and would order again. Overall the breakfast club did not disappoint. If I ever want a good brunch this will be my go to choice. Thank You again. read more

First time visiting The Breakfast Club in Silver Spring, and everything was amazing. I visited on Easter Sunday with a group of friends, so it was a little busy. The bartender also served as our waitress, so service was a little slow, but I didn't have any issues although a few of the people in my party did have to wait a bit for drinks and food. I also had a couple of friends who asked for their food to be warmed up after it came to the table. We shared the Fenton Street Wings, and they were delicious. Uncle J's signature sauce was the perfect mix of sweet, and tangy. I will definitely order the wings again. My group also shared the Shrimp Deviled Eggs which were okay. Nothing too spectacular in my book. I ordered the Seafood Grits for my main course, and it was perfectly seasoned, plentiful, and filled with seafood (crab, shrimp, and a few lobster pieces)....a seafood lovers dream. The grits were also perfectly prepared, and not overly cheesy. I believe that I had the Mint Prohibition for my drink, and it was okay. There was quite a bit of ice, so the drink watered down quickly. I also wish that I could've tasted more of the flavors (mint, sparking rose, etc). The venue was an interesting setup with us sitting in the center of the restaurant, but I had no complaints. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and will go again when I'm in the area. read more

I've been here several times, and let me tell you--the seafood grits always hit! It has me in a chokehold, and I just can't bring myself to order anything else (but seriously, no regrets). This time, I came for my sister-in-law's birthday, which gave me the perfect excuse to try something other than my usual (though, let's be real--I still ordered the seafood grits for myself lol). Let's get into it: *Shrimp Deviled Eggs - Really good! But they only give you half a shrimp on top instead of a whole one (a little skimpy, but still tasty). *Wings - 10/10, would order again! *Mac & Cheese - At first glance, it looked like the blue-box Kraft version, but surprisingly, it was really good. *Oxtail Grits - Just okay--not my favorite, but not bad. *French Toast - Delicious and full of flavor (as expected). *Bread Pudding - Really, really good--definitely worth ordering! Drinks: I had the Great Gatsby--delicious and definitely spirit-forward. My sister-in-law had the strawberry margarita, which was also really good. Final Thoughts: Great food, great service--especially considering we had a large party. One tip: make a reservation because the place is small, and walk-ins might not get seated. Food is excellent. I got the seafood and grits, expecting more grits rather than seafood and ended up getting more seafood than grits. I also didn't expect a lot of lobster meat but in fact there was plenty of lobster meat in the dish . Pleasant surprise will go back highly recommend the seafood and grits. They definitely have a unique menu. The wings were VERY good, flavorful crispy and delicious flavor. The oxtail fried rice was a large portion, they also gave me a lot of oxtail. However, one of my friends had gotten the seafood fried rice which I tried, it was kind of dry. But another friend had the seafood grits, which I tried and was my favorite item from this afternoon. On a spur of the moment MLK Day date, we decided to scratch another bookmark off our list and take a 50min ride to Downtown Silver Spring. The Breakfast Club is right on the perimeter of bustling Downtown Silver Spring, which is a plus because parking is actually reasonable. Once you walk in, you notice "The Breakfast Club" doesn't look anything like its name and is actually a very nice looking RESTAURANT, unlike your normal pancake joint...LOL. I had a few minutes to burn solo, so I figured I'd take advantage of the HH and get a quick drink. After several minutes of watching at least 5 servers/bartenders congregate behind the bar, one finally came over and informed me, sorry, our HH is Wed-Fri only. Well, that's not what your website says?? Yeah, I keep telling management the website is wrong and they haven't changed it... Hmmmm! At this point, I was kicking myself in the butt for making this trip. I passed on the drink since the GF had now joined me. We were promptly seated at our reservation time, however, it took another several minutes before our server came to greet us. Guess what, it was the same bartender who told me there was no HH.. he's doing dual duty... Hmmmmm!! We were ready to order, so let's start with the shrimp topped deviled eggs. When they arrived, I was a little blown. For a whopping $17, you get three egg halves and three fried shrimp.. are you kidding me? Can we at least get the other half a egg so that we don't have to split that poor little third half and one additional shrimp for that $17 price tag, especially since they were sooooo dang goooood.. geeezus!! The meal that redeemed "The Breakfast Club" and pulled this review up from a 2 to 4 stars, was the lamb chops. Lawd Have MERCY, they hit on all cylinders on this one. Massive amounts of chops and Mac and Cheese along with broccolini. All for $40, I could not believe it. The lamb literally ranked up there with Ruth's Chris in size and taste. I could not stop talking about it. Her breakfast burger was very good but that da*n lamb was delicious. My bestie and her husband are foodies too! When they went to The Breakfast Club, I was quick to get a call and her statement was, "Ermahgerd, you have to go to The Breakfast Club". My Big Spoon is always up for a new place so he made the reservation and off we went to see what all the hype was about! The Good: Street Parking and a parking lot is close so we lucked out! No issues on parking. Causal Dining - You don't have to dress up. Ambiance is chill. Food is actually REALLY good! Some hits some misses! But overall Good! The Bad: Service lacked. They needed more wait staff. A manager presence. Something. Everyone looked lost except for the girl cleaning the tables who was so sweet! Waiter was nice but he was also the bartender so we rarely saw him. We had needs that never got met, we needed more silverware, I ended up just getting up and stealing the ones on the empty table. I wanted ranch and more lettuce, but the waiter came way too late to check in on us. Advertised Hours for Happy Hour (online) are not accurate, the waiters own words, "sorry what's on the website is very wrong." Allegedly HH is only Wed-Friday. Sigh. The Ugly: Small Bar Area and overall small restaurant. Seems to be a younger demographic of patrons. Portion size of the deviled eggs is wild. 3 deviled eggs? Three? One, Two, Three? Who gets the third? Rock, paper, scissors and winner gets the third? You all couldn't afford to give guest the other half of the third egg? Very disappointing. I called my bestie today and her sentiments are equal, good food, so-so on service, a little over priced for some items, and definitely a trendy place for the young kids. Would I come back? It's a long drive from the city or from the boondocks. It's likely a one and done for me unless the Big Spoon intends to come back, I wouldn't. 3.5 stars for me..... Let's get into it! Appetizer: Deviled Eggs - Really delicious! Those shrimp are amazing! We arrived on a Saturday morning w/o a reservation (oops!) but were able to be seated in this cozy restaurant. The food was delicious, the paintings were beautiful, and the servuce was excellent. We got: -Chicken & waffles (4/5) - chicken was seasoned and fried well. -Seafood & grits (5/5) - there were meaty chunks of seafood, it tasted amazing, and they had a great amount of sauce! There was enough for me to take some home. When we were seated, the hostess informed us of the 90-min table limit, which was fine bc the food came out quickly. I will return again!! read more
