Great place for both a quiet and fun-filled dinner! Exterior has a country home vibe. Interior is just as inviting, with dark wood floors, flowered wallpaper and warm tone decor. Dining areas are in several room spaces, instead of 1 big cavernous hall. There is a bar room as well as a tavern in the basement. Outdoor lawn has plenty of tables and lush greenery, perfect for a good weather day picnic. Our group was in a bigger room and a few steps downstairs from the bar area. Waitstaff was professional and helpful. We first ordered drinks, then starters. We ordered entrées after drinks and starters arrived for good pacing. Several of us shared a Skyfall Cabernet Sauvignon. It was smooth and fruity. We shared pimento cheese dip with veggies and bread triangles, bread basket, burrata and spiced cauliflower. All were excellent, Star was the burrata, so creamy and had pesto with it. My entree was a prosciutto sandwich with fig spread. The sandwich was on ciabatta bread. Dear Restaurant Owner, My husband and I had been looking forward to dining at your restaurant for quite some time and finally had the opportunity to visit on Tuesday, June 2, before attending a concert nearby at 8:00 PM. We arrived at approximately 6:45 PM, were seated promptly, and were greeted by our server, Anna. She was pleasant; however, the service we received throughout the evening was extremely disappointing. We ordered drinks to start. My husband ordered a beer, and I ordered a rosé prosecco. When my drink arrived, it was visibly flat. I tasted it anyway and found it to be both warm and lacking carbonation. When I brought this to Anna's attention, she responded, "I noticed it looked flat too; I'll get you another one." Frankly, this was concerning. If she noticed the drink was not of acceptable quality, it should never have been served to a customer in the first place. We then ordered the mussels appetizer, which was excellent and one of the highlights of our visit. Shortly afterward, I ordered the swordfish special, and my husband ordered the shrimp po' boy. Neither dish would typically require an unusually long preparation time. Unfortunately, what followed was nearly an hour of waiting with no communication. Anna never checked on the status of our meals, nor did she provide any updates. Meanwhile, we watched multiple tables who were seated after us receive their food and complete their meals. By 7:45 PM, with our concert approaching, my husband suggested that we ask for our meals to be packed to go. It quickly became apparent that our entrees had not even been prepared. When Anna finally returned, she told us it would be "another five minutes," indicating that our meals had not yet been cooked despite being ordered nearly an hour earlier. At that point, we had no choice but to take the food to go so that we would not miss our concert. As a result, we ended up eating cold food later that evening. What made the experience particularly disappointing was that we had genuinely been excited to visit your restaurant. We had heard good things and were looking forward to a memorable dinner before our evening out. Instead, we left feeling overlooked and wondering what we had done to warrant such poor service and lack of attention. To my surprise, my husband--who is incredibly kind and non-confrontational--still left Anna a 20% tip, despite the fact that the service did not merit it. I am writing not to seek anything in return, but simply to make you aware of our experience. The quality of the mussels showed us that your kitchen is capable of producing excellent food. I had been meaning to check out Zinnia as soon as it opened, and it was so good! I went for brunch. I made the reservation (a must) a little late and the only available seats were in the cellar, which is cozy but a little dark. My friend and I ordered 2 pastries to share - the cheddar and currant scones. I preferred the cheddar, but both were delicious. We also shared the French toast which was incredible. It had stewed apples but comes with different fruits based on the season. We shared the brunch hash too, which was great, and we customized it to have it without any meat. I also asked for hot sauce and it was promptly brought over. Service was great throughout. Had the most beautiful Valentine's Day experience at Zinnia in Silver Spring, Maryland. We opted for the Valentine's Day menu, and I absolutely loved it. This was first time visiting Zinnia since the restaurant changed over from Mrs. K's. Greeted by hostess upon entry. The space flows the same however there is the addition of a full bar upstairs. I had the seafood chowder and a petite steak with sides. The chowder was fantastic. The scallops amd seafood ingredients were fresh. The serving size for bowl was a good portion. The petite steak was a decent size. Good flavor especially with chimichuri sauce topping. However it need just a touch of salt. Overall meal and bar experience was great. One of the most beautiful breakfast places I've been to in Silver Spring. Our table had an amazing view and the service was great.

Took colleagues out for a happy hour that turned into us shutting the place down. We had such a lovely time listening to the live music until 7, then settled into great conversation over delicious food and drinks. The tables in the Tavern were a little close together, and we apparently bothered the group beside us -- once a booth opened up, they moved, and honestly we were relieved the duds were gone. As for appetizers, the mussels, meatballs, and burrata were all top notch. The bread basket was just okay, and the chicken wings could've been much crisper. The wine, however, was divine. My family came here for my dad's birthday and it was so lovely. The staff were knowledgeable and accommodating to substitutions and all our food turned out delicious. I got the pan seared salmon which was perfect, but the real surprise was the pear sorbet. It was so refreshing! I am in the bar downstairs. The real treat here is the resident pianist, Porkchop! He is an amazing entertainer. Impressive improvisation that weaves in and out of well known melodies from Take Five to Play that Funky Music to Für Elise. Tonight he has Laura Baron, award winning songstress, as his guest. She carried us away from her first number, the classic, Skylark. Then we heard some of her original tunes including Enchanté. A delight! Together they closed the evening with a beautiful rendition of Auld Lang Syne. The evening was wonderful! Every Thursday evening Porkchop is here. I came here for my birthday brunch with the girlies and had a cute time!! I have been wanting to try it out since coming across a TikTok review, and was super excited. Now this area was packed and busy, there was a mini farmers market happening behind Zinnia's, and also Christmas tree pickup, so parking was a little stressful. I luckily found parking in the lot across the street when someone was leaving, however, give yourself an extra 5-10 minutes to find parking. My friends were almost late for our reservations because they had to park a few blocks away. There are two floors, and we sat downstairs, and it was so cute and cozy. Our waiter Kevin was THE BEST!! He was so warm, and we felt so welcomed by him (please give him a raise). I ordered a chai latte, quiche with a side of old bay fries, and the challah French toast for my friends and I to share. I am a sucker for fries and was excited to pair them with my food. I personally enjoyed my food a lot. My quiche needed a bit of salt love, but everything was super good. At the end, they gave us a postcard with our receipt, which I was super excited for. I LOVE that they played live music. It truly adds to the atmosphere. It did get really loud, and they were receptive to toning it down. The hostesses who checked us in were cold and standoffish. It could have been because the place was really busy, chaotic, and overstimulating, but I don't know. Great day for a lunch to sit either inside or out. This place offers both. As it was a business lunch we needed a calmer, quieter area to work, so we chose inside. Really cool how they set this house up turning it into a fine dining establishment. Apparently this was a different establishment before and equally popular. Multiple rooms inside or out to choose to sit. Not crazy pricing by any means, the meal I got, which was soup and salad was filling enough for lunch. You don't get that bloated feeling. They had a couple of soup specials. I went with a chicken lentil. Not so much a lot of soup, but what was there offered a sensible amount of chicken and a lot of flavor. My lunch salad was called a " baby gold, and ruby beat". it's an arugula salad with lemon ricotta shallots, pistachios, and a great tasting dressing of honey vinaigrette. I'm not a huge fan of lemon or lime flavor in my food so it was a bit concerned. This might be lemonade tasting, but as it turned out, it was not. Came here to have brunch with some of my wife's relatives. One of our party had limited mobility, so it made sense to eat outside, but it was still a challenge. This restaurant is not ADA friendly. The weather was designed just for us. Unfortunately, there was a wedding event taking place later that day, so some of the seating options and servers seemed spoken for. We wish we had vetted that situation out ahead of time to make sure we didn't have obstacles. The garden seating was spectacular and even featured a bit of mother nature in action and in full bloom. A few in my party wondered out loud if a restaurant in MD could possibly know how to do grits properly (they were from further south). I was pretty confident that they could pull it off, and I was correct. The grits were swimming in buttery goodness and the shrimp were sautéed to perfection. If I had to do it over again, I would probably ask for some hot sauce to drip all over to give it a little kick. I joined a few friends for brunch one weekend. It was my first time here. As I entered, I noticed the host stand to the right and a stairway to the left (there is a basement level with its own bar). Beyond the host stand (on the right), I was led down a few stairs to my party who were already seated. The area we were in was just a few tables - I did notice a bar and saw views of the outside. The brunch menu is separated by breakfast, salad, and sandwiches on one side and on the other, pastries, sides, and drinks (cocktails, beer, wine, non-alcoholic, coffee & tea). For a drink, I ordered the Chai Tea Latte and was asked if I wanted it hot or iced. I got it with ice (needed on a hot day) in a tall glass. It was great. For food, I ordered the Breakfast Bowl, described as chorizo scramble, patatas bravas (menu showed "potatas"), sweet peppers, onions, cheddar, and smoked paprika aioli. It was listed under "Breakfast" on the Brunch menu. It was a nice sized portion along with a small amount of greens. I liked the fact that the meal was light, and I really enjoyed it. There were no leftovers once I was done. I was able to glance at the dessert menu but decided to hold off until another time. I did like the choices though: Carrot Parsnip Cake, Baba Au Rhum, Brown Sugar Crème Bruleé, Hazelnut Crunch Bar, Ice Cream and Sorbet. Great service from Alexandra. On our way out, we decided to take a mini tour of the other areas within the restaurant. Everywhere we turned there was a new room somewhere. Outdoors set up was nice - a mini bridge here or there with a little lake in view. All the tables looked like they had umbrellas, and I even saw a gazebo in the distance. Great visit overall. Parking The restaurant is located at the corner of Colesville Road (Rt. 29) and Dale, however, if you need to park, it is best to park in the bigger lot on Dale Drive (entrance is across the street from the restaurant). If you need to be closer, you can check the much smaller lot (entrance on Toll House Road), but it could be full - I think I counted about 13 spaces with a few extra on the side street. read more

Zinnia's is in the old Mrs. K's Tollhouse building. It was actually a tollhouse in the 1800's. You had to pay a toll to get from DC. to Baltimore. Mrs. K took over in 1930 and ran Mrs. K's Tollhouse, an upscale restaurant with fabulous food. In 2021, Chef Danny Wells took over the upstairs dining room of Zinnia's. Chef Wells, formerly of Republic is known for using local ingredients and organic produce grown in his own gardens at the restaurant. Yesterday, I met some friends for lunch/brunch. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous with beautiful antiques and old world charm. It has beautiful lighting and comfortable seating. Our server was spectacular. She had everything out in a timely manner. She was so nice and answered all of our questions and took care of any issues that we needed taken care of. The food was very excellent. I had the crab cake sandwich with french fries. The crabcake was fresh and full of lump crabmeat. It was a nice size portion. It was delicious. My fries were not hot and I told the server and she brought me out a whole basket of piping hot fries. Yum. One of my friends got the breakfast bowl and she really liked it. My other friend got the Mediterranean bowl with Quinoa, hummus, cucumbers, red peppers, grape tomatoes,feta, arugula, spinach, olives and. champagne vinaigrette. She really liked hers too. I ordered a mimosa which was refreshing and my friend ordered a Paloma. She loved her drink. After lunch we took a walk down to the tavern section that has a darker stone like appearance. We had a party of 7 for Brunch on Sunday-Around 10:30, a good amount both inside and out. The Outdoor Garden patio area is amazing and I was sort of wishing we were outside although it got pretty hot by the time we were finished. Historic Tollhouse with a character filled interior. Various eating areas which provided different atmospheres. They do have a cafe with counter service for coffee and pastries. Parking was limited in front of the restaurant but there was ample street parking in the adjacent neighborhood as well at the bigger lot across the street. We started with coffee with some ordering Cappuccinos and Cortados. Strong/Bold flavors and all enjoyed their drinks. One of our party almost ordered the Watermelon salad (special) as a meal but we found out it was an appetizer. We ordered and it was tasty-Basil and feta with the two types of melons worked well. For Brunch, a variety was ordered. Breakfast Bowl was a good mix of ingredients with a perfect chorizo scramble and Patatas Bravas. Croque Madame (special) and Avocado Croast (griddled croissant base) were delicious as well the Challah French Toast. Service was attentive and friendly. This place is awesome! Easy to make reservations online. Their outdoor space allows dogs and it's beautiful. Inside is nice too. Their food is always on point. It's kind of pricier depending on what you get - but I think the cost of eating out is just high these days. They also have good happy hour deals. I came here with my son and they have highchairs upon request. Service is fantastic and I've never had a bad or disappointing meal. I'll keep coming back and always high recommend!! So disappointed. I used to live right near Mrs. K's and when a former classmate suggested we meet there for lunch I was excited to try the new (to me ) restaurant in a familiar place. He asked me to make the reservation as the system they use would not take his email. I was disappointed to learn that they will not accept reservations via a simple phone call. No I was forced to sign up to their reservation system, where every one of the passwords I always use was rejected. I already hate this place, they probably don't have menus and force you to order via QR code. I know the world is changing and I'm not tech illiterate. But I shouldn't have to work so hard to find a place that will take my money. Not taking reservations by phone is already a deal breaker, even if I loved the meal I would have never returned. Absolutely adorable local gem of a spot! They have the coziest tavern to eat at inside and the cutest outdoor eating area during warmer weather. I booked a brunch reservation first thing Saturday morning and we were seated promptly. The staff were well educated on the menu and easily guided me towards items that I could order/modify for a dairy allergy. The coffee is from Lost Sock Roasters, a favorite of mine, and the pastries looked delicious. My sister ordered a Nutella croissant and it was stuffed with creamy Nutella. Everyone enjoyed their food and we left content with full bellies. I tried the breakfast scramble without cheese this morning. The chorizo egg scramble wasn't greasy at all (this truly is something to brag about) and the potatoes were cut finely and crisp. I will absolutely order this again. Came to Zinnia during the week for a team brunch and had a delightful time. The outdoor seating area is perfect for spring/summer. It is in a garden-like patio area (little gazebo, mini pond) that feels homey. What's really nice is they had blankets also since it was a chilly. I got the Mediterranean bowl which was a massive portion, enough to share between two people. All the vegetables were fresh, vibrant, and the dish was light and cohesive. I also shared the shrimp po'boy sandwich which I really enjoyed. The fries were meh, but the herb aioli it came with tasted fresh. I really like Zinnia! I came with 3 friends and we were seated on time. One of my friends ordered tea and it came in a cute little tea press. I wanted to order the crab cake tartine but they were out. I ordered the breakfast sandwich with avocado instead. It was pretty good, but I do wish there was a bit more savory/smokiness involved- maybe some sauce or pickled onions? One of my friends got the shakshuka and really enjoyed it. The presentation was great! My other friends got the Colesville Cobb and the Mediterranean bowl and they both said they liked their food too. One got the blueberry muffin as well and she said it was one of the best she's had. The restaurant has not changed the aesthetic since Mrs K's, which I appreciate. The venue is just beautiful, and it brought back a lot of memories for me as my family used to visit this place when it was Mrs. K's tollhouse. The food was absolutely delicious! We started with the corn and crab dip served with sourdough bread, it was really good. I had the blackened catfish which had a crawfish etouffe sauce on it, so good! My dining partner had the short rib, which was also delicious! After dinner, we went downstairs to the tavern for an after dinner drink. Really cool space, if you go to Zinnia you have to check it out. In addition to the delicious food, the service was top-notch. Our server, Viviana, was great! Today, April 16, was the first time I went to Zinnias with two senior friends. The food was excellent, outstanding really. I had their unique preparation of gnocchi and beet salad. We had an interesting situation. We picked the garden and it is extremely close to the dumpster and there was a smell of a dead animal. We asked to be changed seats and were met with opposition. We were told we wouldn't be moved in. I don't know if he's a manager but a Hispanic curly haired man came over and said they've been looking for the problem and would move us. Now the second problem had been our food took maybe 1.5 hours to come out with no exaggeration AND COLD. The food was definitely subpar. Everything lacked flavor. So really the only thing good here is the scenery everything else kinda sucks sad to say SAVE YOUR MONEY! - Crab/Corn Dip: I am sorry but this is an abomination especially in Maryland. I appreciate the big pieces of crab, but it's just cheese with the crab and canned corned. I enjoyed my last meal there, and the garden was lovely but since they dropped the only vegan main course on the dinner menu, there's nothing for my husband to eat. Won't be going back until they join us in 2026. Even dive bars understand you have to offer at least a couple of good vegan options. read more

Love this place for so many reasons. Little coffee bar is perfect for a work from home day with tons of seat yourself area. The tavern is really amazing for a cozy night and very kid friendly. The garden is perfect for a spring or fall dinner. Also a huge come up is they have a great happy hour and crab dip. read more

There is no doubt Zinnia deserves the accolades it's gotten as a great place for brunch, lunch, dinner, in-between times, parties, gatherings, and all manner of get-together and eat-alone! Great service, beautiful atmosphere, delicious food in plentiful amounts all come together to make this an exceptional, one-of-a-kind, uniquely sumptuous experience! I fi-na-lly got to go to and try out Zinnia today -- and it was perfect! I mean, the day was perfect for sitting outside where we sat and I'm so glad they didn't have any seating available inside the regular restaurant at a regular table when we arrived. It's just so beautiful out ... and people dress up to match the flowers and have their pictures taken in front of them, and that's just fun to watch -- well, if you like people, that is! It's great for small or large parties, families with young children and dogs are welcome. Well, there is nothing like garden seating on a nice, bright, not-too-hot, not-too-cold day .... Of course, there is plentiful shading provided by amply-sized umbrellas in various colours and prints, and the walkways are beautiful as well, with irregularly-shaped tiles for a very natural look and feel, and speakers somewhat semi-hidden in the grass for a musical experience .... Even during the 'limited menu' between brunch-and-dinner time (an hour), there is plenty of deliciousness to be had here! Tip: there are things that are not listed (on the limited in-between times menu, that is!), and you may be able to procure, such as fries, lemonade, and a nice iced, spiced and milky Masala Chai. The one salad selection is listed as Caesar -- and it is! -- but, there are also add-ons you can get if that is not enough for you ... though, I must say, the Caesar Salad is quite generous! Not only that, it comes in a way I've never seen before, and that is to say with hearts of Romaine lettuce -- and the lettuce was per-fect! The Spiced Cauliflower was super-tasty, enticingly red, and cooked to -- again -- perfection! The lemonade was great as was the masala tea. The fries came with not one but two sauces -- ketchup and a mayonnaise with some little bits of greenery in it, and the pimento cheese gave me a reason to try 'toast points' for the first time ever, so that was an experience for me ... but really, the whole experience here is an experience! Outstanding! I didn't eat in the tavern but got to see it and I would say it looks like a nice place to eat in winter -- but until then, if I can, I prefer to sit outside in the garden, since I found viewing a water fountain and flowers growing while I eat is unequalled .... Hint: If you feel at all unstable walking sometimes, and use a cane or some other walking device but don't always use it, you may want to make sure to bring it with you if you will be dining in the garden, because the terrain is somewhat uneven .... If you don't live super nearby (I don't!), I can say it is well worth the trip! Superb! read more
