It's holiday season so that means plenty of Christmas inspired pop ups. I got to check this gingerbread land one out which is in a series of several holiday pop ups at different duke's grocery locations throughout the area, with each one having a different theme. I decided to try the mule and the martini, the martini was probably my favorite of the two I wasn't sure how well a peppermint vodka base would go but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and compliment of the ingredients. The gingerbread mule was a bit more potent and maybe the one I had had a bit too much lime juice so I didn't truly get to appreciate how the overall flavors would mimic the taste of gingerbread but still a decent drink. I made a reservation over the weekend at Dukes (thru Resy) to be able to watch the England World Cup game today. I called TWICE (before today) and it was confirmed TWICE that if we had a reservation we would get a table to watch the game. I received a text message from Resy at 10:01 asking me to confirm my reservation. I responded at 10:03. I received response confirming my reservation was good at 10:04. I arrive at Duke's at 2 pm to sit at the bar and wait for my reservation. Upon checking in, I was told by the manager they overbooked and they would not honor my reservation. However, I will admit that a breakfast plate with sausage can be better had by another place nearby. Still, you can't go wrong here, and in the winter, with the numerous indoor seating they offer in this renovated location, it's a safe choice. Staff was friendly although a bit uncompromising when it came to making substitutions. Prices were decent. The renovation makes the vibe a bit better - as there's no longer creaky floors, and the floors seem to be nicely polished. I'm a gay dad and went with another queer parent, and we were able to snag a front table with the perfect view of all the excitement and celebration passing by. They were offering hot dogs and popcorn out front, which was a total lifesaver for feeding our hungry kids right away. There was a little confusion at first about how to order food for the adults (we weren't sure if we had to go upstairs for takeout), but the staff was kind and accommodating--ultimately taking our orders so we could stay put and enjoy the vibe. Recently reopened location (the original Dukes) needs some work. Went for brunch. Shakshuka was watered down and lukewarm. We eat them in many restaurants & this one was very average. Bottomless mimosas only available if the entire table orders. This isn't reasonable and isn't in line with other DC restaurants. We had one mimosa to try and it was meh - they must not use fresh orange juice and lower quality sparkling wine. No kids menu - this makes the restaurant not family friendly. The owner needs to correct that. On the plus side the chicken and waffles and French toast were good. If the owners fix these issues, I'd return, but not until that. read more

A twist on London fair, they are most known for their burgers that are said to be top contenders for the best in the District. Since their remodel, they also now offer French fries, which was long awaited. First: The Proper Burger is not the best burger in the DC area. not even close. It was good, but if you like ground beef in your burger, the Proper Burger will leave you wanting. Note that if you order the burger they show in the reviews and on the website, it will set you back over $25, with no sides. The good news was that it was available for a large group last minute and the food was ok. But it wasn't great and the bottomless drink setup was a bit confusing and felt like they were pinching pennies (coffee was extra with bottomless drinks and some who is sober couldn't choose not to participate in bottomless something) I had a full English breakfast, which was exactly as described, but was very rich and needed something to break it up. The salmon croquettes were not great and the French toast had little flavor. I remember the burger being very good from a previous experience from many years ago, but no one in my party tried it this time. Duke's has that cozy bar feel with a British charm to it. Its a great spot to catch up with friends, group, or even head in solo. I'm always in search for the best burger and was recommended here to try the Proper burger and it did not disappoint. The Proper burger is a juicy two patty burger topped with melted Gouda, pickles, red onion, aioli and a sweet chili sauce. It is booming with flavor and sandwiched between a fluffy brioche bun. Accompanied with crispy fries, this burger is high on my list of favorites. Service was friendly and great! She kept those water bottles coming as I drink a lot of water.
