For food we had the Tuna Melt, Caesar salad and Waygu burger. The Tuna melt was good but honestly was a little bland which is not typically the case on a tuna melt. Our server was also super sweet and accommodating given the large group I was with. I tried the proper burger with a side of their sweet potato fries. I liked that the burger was served on a potato bun, but it was so greasy and the acidity of the pickles and onion did nothing to cut through it. The bun on the bottom was also soaked and kind of fell apart, so the structural integrity of this burger was also a little questionable. The sweet potato fries were way too soft in my opinion. I made a reservation over the weekend at Dukes (thru Resy) to be able to watch the England World Cup game today. I called TWICE (before today) and it was confirmed TWICE that if we had a reservation we would get a table to watch the game. I received a text message from Resy at 10:01 asking me to confirm my reservation. I responded at 10:03. I received response confirming my reservation was good at 10:04. I arrive at Duke's at 2 pm to sit at the bar and wait for my reservation. Upon checking in, I was told by the manager they overbooked and they would not honor my reservation. We were offered a seat outside, in the sun, no where near a television. Why offer reservations if you won't honor them? Very disappointed in Duke's and Resy for not managing this experience better. read more

It's holiday season so that means plenty of Christmas inspired pop ups. I got to check this gingerbread land one out which is in a series of several holiday pop ups at different duke's grocery locations throughout the area, with each one having a different theme. It's a pretty quaint space and the pop up is located on the second floor, with all the festive decorations you can imagine. I arrived not too long after they opened so service was quick and the server was energetic and engaging with the few of us that were in the space. Their holiday inspired cocktail options included a tootsie roll'd old fashion, gingerbread lane mule, and a peppermint espresso martini (each $14). I decided to try the mule and the martini, the martini was probably my favorite of the two I wasn't sure how well a peppermint vodka base would go but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and compliment of the ingredients. The gingerbread mule was a bit more potent and maybe the one I had had a bit too much lime juice so I didn't truly get to appreciate how the overall flavors would mimic the taste of gingerbread but still a decent drink. Waitstaff rude on both occasions I visited. First time, we were told they needed the table for a reservation with no prior notice, and we were only there for maybe an hour. Which was fine. But second time, we were seated next to a speaker and politely asked the waiter to turn it down. The bar tender was drunk and hanging with her friends. It was so loud. But the waiter tells us "no we can turn it up. We can make it louder. It's a bar." And said drunk bar tender took a ridiculously long time to make our drinks. Still, you can't go wrong here, and in the winter, with the numerous indoor seating they offer in this renovated location, it's a safe choice. Staff was friendly although a bit uncompromising when it came to making substitutions. Prices were decent. The renovation makes the vibe a bit better - as there's no longer creaky floors, and the floors seem to be nicely polished. I tend to prefer vegan food when I'm on vacation but they seemed to be lacking options in the menu so I settled on the vegetarian aubergine sandwich. To be honest, I'm not sure if I like it or not. It certainly is spicy and has a lot of flavors but it also feels like it might be missing something. A sauce perhaps. But it was tasty and I did eat the whole thing so it must have been pretty good. Recently reopened location (the original Dukes) needs some work. Went for brunch. Shakshuka was watered down and lukewarm. We eat them in many restaurants & this one was very average. Bottomless mimosas only available if the entire table orders. This isn't reasonable and isn't in line with other DC restaurants. We had one mimosa to try and it was meh - they must not use fresh orange juice and lower quality sparkling wine. No kids menu - this makes the restaurant not family friendly. The owner needs to correct that. On the plus side the chicken and waffles and French toast were good. If the owners fix these issues, I'd return, but not until that. read more

Note that if you order the burger they show in the reviews and on the website, it will set you back over $25, with no sides. Service was decently fast, the food was hot (sweet potato fries were great), and the atmosphere in the brownstone TH with exposed brick was relaxing. Eat upstairs if you can. Salmon croquettes were good too. Overall a good experience, but if you come looking for one of the best burgers in DC you will leave disappointed. The good news was that it was available for a large group last minute and the food was ok. But it wasn't great and the bottomless drink setup was a bit confusing and felt like they were pinching pennies (coffee was extra with bottomless drinks and some who is sober couldn't choose not to participate in bottomless something) I had a full English breakfast, which was exactly as described, but was very rich and needed something to break it up. The salmon croquettes were not great and the French toast had little flavor. I remember the burger being very good from a previous experience from many years ago, but no one in my party tried it this time. I'm always in search for the best burger and was recommended here to try the Proper burger and it did not disappoint. The Proper burger is a juicy two patty burger topped with melted Gouda, pickles, red onion, aioli and a sweet chili sauce. It is booming with flavor and sandwiched between a fluffy brioche bun. Accompanied with crispy fries, this burger is high on my list of favorites. Service was friendly and great! She kept those water bottles coming as I drink a lot of water.
