The chicken is done just right and the veggies are dressed with a sweet, creamy, slightly hot sauce. It all makes for a masterfull creation. For food we had the Tuna Melt, Caesar salad and Waygu burger. The Tuna melt was good but honestly was a little bland which is not typically the case on a tuna melt. It was good though and perfectly cooked and full of tuna. The wagyu burger was particularly good with the onion jam really elevating the dish. Our server was also super sweet and accommodating given the large group I was with. I tried the proper burger with a side of their sweet potato fries. I liked that the burger was served on a potato bun, but it was so greasy and the acidity of the pickles and onion did nothing to cut through it. The bun on the bottom was also soaked and kind of fell apart, so the structural integrity of this burger was also a little questionable. The sweet potato fries were way too soft in my opinion. It's holiday season so that means plenty of Christmas inspired pop ups. I got to check this gingerbread land one out which is in a series of several holiday pop ups at different duke's grocery locations throughout the area, with each one having a different theme. It's a pretty quaint space and the pop up is located on the second floor, with all the festive decorations you can imagine. I arrived not too long after they opened so service was quick and the server was energetic and engaging with the few of us that were in the space. Their holiday inspired cocktail options included a tootsie roll'd old fashion, gingerbread lane mule, and a peppermint espresso martini (each $14). I decided to try the mule and the martini, the martini was probably my favorite of the two I wasn't sure how well a peppermint vodka base would go but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and compliment of the ingredients. The gingerbread mule was a bit more potent and maybe the one I had had a bit too much lime juice so I didn't truly get to appreciate how the overall flavors would mimic the taste of gingerbread but still a decent drink. However, I will admit that a breakfast plate with sausage can be better had by another place nearby. Still, you can't go wrong here, and in the winter, with the numerous indoor seating they offer in this renovated location, it's a safe choice. Staff was friendly although a bit uncompromising when it came to making substitutions. Prices were decent. The renovation makes the vibe a bit better - as there's no longer creaky floors, and the floors seem to be nicely polished. It essentially looks and feels like a new restaurant rather than a rusty dive-joint it used to be. read more

We stopped by Duke's Grocery on 17th Street during Pride and it was exactly the kind of welcoming, easygoing spot we needed. I'm a gay dad and went with another queer parent, and we were able to snag a front table with the perfect view of all the excitement and celebration passing by. They were offering hot dogs and popcorn out front, which was a total lifesaver for feeding our hungry kids right away. There was a little confusion at first about how to order food for the adults (we weren't sure if we had to go upstairs for takeout), but the staff was kind and accommodating--ultimately taking our orders so we could stay put and enjoy the vibe. My partner and friend both had the BLT sandwiches and loved them. I went with the hummus and pita, which was fresh and flavorful. Honestly, between the great food, chill service, and unbeatable people-watching, this is an ideal Pride pit stop (or anytime hangout) for queer families and friends. I made a reservation over the weekend at Dukes (thru Resy) to be able to watch the England World Cup game today. I called TWICE (before today) and it was confirmed TWICE that if we had a reservation we would get a table to watch the game. I received a text message from Resy at 10:01 asking me to confirm my reservation. I responded at 10:03. I received response confirming my reservation was good at 10:04. I arrive at Duke's at 2 pm to sit at the bar and wait for my reservation. Upon checking in, I was told by the manager they overbooked and they would not honor my reservation. We were offered a seat outside, in the sun, no where near a television. Why offer reservations if you won't honor them? Very disappointed in Duke's and Resy for not managing this experience better. read more

Recently reopened location (the original Dukes) needs some work. Went for brunch. Shakshuka was watered down and lukewarm. We eat them in many restaurants & this one was very average. Bottomless mimosas only available if the entire table orders. This isn't reasonable and isn't in line with other DC restaurants. We had one mimosa to try and it was meh - they must not use fresh orange juice and lower quality sparkling wine. No kids menu - this makes the restaurant not family friendly. The owner needs to correct that. On the plus side the chicken and waffles and French toast were good. If the owners fix these issues, I'd return, but not until that. read more

I tend to prefer vegan food when I'm on vacation but they seemed to be lacking options in the menu so I settled on the vegetarian aubergine sandwich. To be honest, I'm not sure if I like it or not. It certainly is spicy and has a lot of flavors but it also feels like it might be missing something. A sauce perhaps. But it was tasty and I did eat the whole thing so it must have been pretty good. A twist on London fair, they are most known for their burgers that are said to be top contenders for the best in the District. Since their remodel, they also now offer French fries, which was long awaited. Their happy hour is weekdays until 7 pm, and they have a variety of beer, wine, cocktails and NA beverages to meet everyone's needs. The staff is friendly and the service is generally pretty quick. First: The Proper Burger is not the best burger in the DC area. not even close. It was good, but if you like ground beef in your burger, the Proper Burger will leave you wanting. Two small McDonalds-like beef patties always served well done, no matter how you order it. This is not a big thick juicy burger. The other toppings were flavorful so overall it was an ok burger. Note that if you order the burger they show in the reviews and on the website, it will set you back over $25, with no sides. Service was decently fast, the food was hot (sweet potato fries were great), and the atmosphere in the brownstone TH with exposed brick was relaxing. Eat upstairs if you can. Salmon croquettes were good too. Overall a good experience, but if you come looking for one of the best burgers in DC you will leave disappointed. Kind of on the fence with this one. Not actively back, but I'm not eager to go back either. I recently came here for brunch with a group and had a mediocre experience. The good news was that it was available for a large group last minute and the food was ok. But it wasn't great and the bottomless drink setup was a bit confusing and felt like they were pinching pennies (coffee was extra with bottomless drinks and some who is sober couldn't choose not to participate in bottomless something) I had a full English breakfast, which was exactly as described, but was very rich and needed something to break it up. The salmon croquettes were not great and the French toast had little flavor. I remember the burger being very good from a previous experience from many years ago, but no one in my party tried it this time. The avocado toast was just one slice of bread with one small egg. The pea mash with the fish and chips was totally bland. Waitstaff rude on both occasions I visited. First time, we were told they needed the table for a reservation with no prior notice, and we were only there for maybe an hour. Which was fine. But second time, we were seated next to a speaker and politely asked the waiter to turn it down. The bar tender was drunk and hanging with her friends. It was so loud. But the waiter tells us "no we can turn it up. We can make it louder. It's a bar." And said drunk bar tender took a ridiculously long time to make our drinks. We ask to cancel them and the waiter says bar tender already made them. Which she didn't. We see waiter run to bar tender, who starts pouring finally.
