We've never been here before - bartender didn't say hello, point us in any direction on seating or how to order food, had no personality and was straight up rude. Dear reader, Astro Beer Hall delivered the sort of deal that almost sounds made up until you are sitting there eating it. For $6, you get a burger or chicken sandwich plus fries or tots with the purchase of a drink, which is honestly kind of an absurdly good deal. Naturally, we had to stop by and investigate for ourselves. The burger was really good and had a great sauce on it that made the whole thing even better. The fries were also excellent, especially dipped in ranch, which felt like a small but very meaningful victory. My only regret is not upgrading to the fully loaded fries like my friend did with his tots, because those looked extremely worth it and I will be thinking about that choice for some time. They also have a really great beer and drink selection, so it was easy to find something to go with everything. The guy behind the bar was running a very tight ship and was super helpful and friendly, which made the whole experience even better. We sat right by the windows and it was perfect, with a cool breeze coming through the door and just enough people watching to keep things interesting. I go here occassionally for post work HH and it never disappoints. pretty straight forward 'dive' (but as a dive bar type gal, this is VERY clean and put together to be considered a dive), with a digital screen listing all the beers on tap. i've had their plain tots and they are consistently crunchy and warm, i split a small order with three friends and it was plenty! Tons of seating both up and downstairs, bartenders are friendly and helpful, just bear in mind that since it's metro center, lots of businesses like to do post-work HH here. read more

Great beer and tasty wings on a cold December night. What more could you ask for? Friendly service? Check! Cozy atmosphere? Check! Lots of beverage options including NA beer, cocktails, and wine. We opted for some canned IPAs and their dry rub wings. They've got a bar upstairs which was a bit more lively with some sports games on the tvs. We opted to sit at the downstairs bar. It was the Tuesday night before new years, so it wasn't real busy. There's lots of space, a whole other room for games, a cozy couch in the corner, and high top tables too. Stumbled across this place after walking around the monuments at night. I arrived around 8:50. Maybe 5 on the main floor and 5 on the lower. I thought that was odd it's a Friday night and the Capitals and nationals were playing games at that time. I ordered the Apollo smash burger sliders. That is three Pat Lafrieda beef burgers , American cheese , sautéd onions, pickles ,and special sauce serve a mini brioche buns. I also ordered two beers Suspended Logic from Delaware and Skipjack from DC. The mini burgers were great melted in my mouth and I didn't mind the pickles (which I hate pickles). The bartender Todd was pleasant and very friendly and helpful when I asked for places to see that aren't too touristy while in town. I heard him tell customers after 9 that the grill was shut down for the night only fried food can be served which I found odd since they close at midnight. Glad I got in when I did. read more

Excellent drink, food and staff. Jeff took care of us downstairs and did a phenomenal job. He set me up with a berry cider from down east and had me sold on the amazing doughnuts they sell upstairs. The food was also great, we ordered the chicken fingers and smash burger sliders and let me tell you, the chicken was to die for. The best deal on a whole smash burger tho is at 9pm for 6 dollars and it comes with fries. Jeff had to tag out and passed us over to Marcus who also did a great job taking care of us. I really like this place. I came here a few times for the Olympics last summer, and it was one of the only bars that played events with sound, which I appreciated. Overall, I had a positive experience during my 3 or so hour stay at Astro Beer Hall. The beer hall with it's two floor is pretty large. I think the downstairs level is a bit larger because it has more open space. The downstairs area has a few video games, life-size Connect four, a coin-/card-operated beer pong game/machine (my 1st time ever seeing one), and a pool table. My group of about 20 folks settled downstairs during March Madness. While the hall was loud (as one would expected), it was not so loud that we had to scream at or text each other to have a conversation. I thought the bar had a pretty extensive selection of beers, and I thought the prices were in line with similar places in the area. I forget the exact number, but I believe there were over 15 beers on draft. While I stuck to a liquid meal of IPAs, the folks in my party enjoyed the food especially the chicken tenders and chicken sliders. read more

My sister took me to Astro for lunch and I was surprised by the food quality. I've been to the other Astro in VA and every donut they served was made to order unlike this DC location. I was surprised, when I ordered the donut, that they do not have any equipment to heat the donut. They gave me a room temperature donut. When I order the crème brûlée donut from District Doughnuts they use a torch to heat up the donut. My mistaken for thinking I was going to get the same level of service. The fried chicken sandwich on a cheddar biscuit was awesome. The chicken wings were undercooked. One thing I must say is that the staff was accommodating and polite. read more

I hit Astro Beer Hall last night for a bite and beverage. The place is busy at around 5 pm. Random seating here and there. The line at the bar for food and drink is long but moving pretty fast. After a visit to wash my hands (metro escalator hand rails are really gross) I get lucky and snag a seat at the bar. The line is still shuffling by and the red haired lady says she will be with me in a minute. Cool. I order a truth from the tap. Cold strong and tasty. After a few sips I order a fried chicken sandwich sans tomato and tots. The first beer is gone so I order another. Soccer is on on in front of me. It's interesting but I can't get all the teams, leagues, players sorted out. Lots of screens with all sorts of programs on. I was given a restaurant pager device to notify me when my food is ready. There is a window to pickup food. Reminds me of a Bar Rescue episode where the setup is the same. I half expected tom see John Taffer somewhere. The pager device went off after a while and I went toward the window but the server was on his way out and he handed me the basket of food. The tots are hot and need some ketchup. Chicken is cooked perfect and the pickles add a nice compliment to the taste. Definitely a place to visit to watch the game or get dinner with friends. There are many inexpensive and tasty restaurants in DC that are fun to stop into for a quick bite. This is sadly not one of them. The service here leaves something to be desired. There are no wait staff; instead, you are expected to order at the bar, despite a lack of signage or instruction. The food is brought out slowly and is massively overpriced. We paid $13 for four tiny chicken tenders? That just didn't sit well with me. The place is significantly noisy, and the self-serve water station was extremely wet and slippery and had a bleach smell too. The ambiance simply was not great here. This was an unpleasant experience, with the only redeeming quality being the delicious loaded tots. Other than that, I do not recommend this restaurant. read more

Came here after a rec league game with about 12 people around 8pm on a Thursday. No problems with getting access to the bar for drinks and ordering our food. Additionally, the food came out within 20 minutes so that's pretty fair given we all ordered at the same time. Environment itself is spacious. We were able to fit all 12 of us between two tables. The music/DJ was very good and didn't feel like it was too loud. There's also games you can play which also adds to the environment. I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich with the "out of this world" heat. The sandwich was hot but nothing crazy. Everyone else enjoyed their food as we were pretty hungry to no complaints there.
