What I loved most about Shaw's was the large portions for the price. Everything was so affordable and very tasty. The Spanish dip was so good. I honestly didn't think I would like it with the extra cheese on top, but our table scraped the bowl clean. I will say the spinach dip portion was a little small though. The steak was flavorful and cooked exactly how I ordered it. My friends ordered the French toast and the burger, and they both loved their meals as well. The potatoes were very flavorful too. The outside of the restaurant may not look super appealing, but the food is definitely worth trying. We went on a Sunday with no reservations. It was packed, but we were seated quickly. There's an upstairs area that seemed to host large parties, so it was pretty loud, but that was expected. We were able to find street parking pretty quickly. I don't think there are any garages nearby.  Our waiter was sweet and quick. We ordered regular sodas, but they were all flat and tasted weird which was really our only disappointment during the visit. The food was amazing, the ambiance was comfortable, and the overall vibe felt warm and inviting. I especially loved the scenery throughout the bar area it really added to the experience. However, the customer service unfortunately did not match the quality of the food. We interacted with two staff members (I'm not sure of their names but could easily identify them). The gentleman we encountered was friendly, engaging, and made us feel welcome. In contrast, the woman who appeared to be a bartender treated my friends and me in a way that felt dismissive and, quite frankly, racially profiled. It was uncomfortable and disappointing, especially during what was meant to be an enjoyable brunch outing. This establishment has great food, but I would only recommend visiting in the evening perhaps the hospitality is more consistent then. read more

I was walking around to find a restaurant to eat in and ran into is tavern with an outside dining area. I looked at their menu and the shrimp scampi caught my eye. They have both inside and outside seating, and I chose outside because it was nice out with a slight breeze and a little quieter outside. The shrimp scampi was pretty good just wish they had fresh ground parmasean cheese but I didn't expect it since it wasn't a italian restaurant. I tried the bread pudding topped with vanilla ice cream which was delicious. The service was very good and friendly, and they immediately cleared finished plated and attentive on checking back. Good basic tavern. We had a burger, a grilled chicken sandwich, and a fried chicken sandwich. All were above average bar food. We didn't have any beer or other drinks, but they had a good selection. Great food, great service, zero complaints! My first time at Shaw's was great, the food was delicious and service was amazing (thanks Aldo)! I ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of eggs and everything was cooked to perfection, hands down the BEST chicken and waffles I've ever had. I will say that the waffle felt heavier than usual as it's made with cornbread batter I believe, so if you're anything like me you'll barely have room to finish it off. To accompany my meal, I ordered the lemon berry crush (sweet and delicious) and the coquito (definitely in the stronger side) which were both great choices. We were seated in the covered patio-like area which was fine--until they opened the partition and the chilly winds started blowing. This was the biggest con as we were extra cold and the staff were unable to close the door due to some guests being seated outside. So if you do decide to visit, try to snag a seat indoors OR come on a day where it's not chilly. There is also only one bathroom available for all guests, so if you tend to break the seal a lot and aren't too good at holding your bladder indulging in a few of their alcoholic beverages may not be the best choice. read more

So incredibly disappointed by our dinner here. Don't come here if anyone in your party has dietary restrictions--they are not accommodating whatsoever. The server would not serve a veggie burger on bread (the bun has egg) despite there being sandwiches with bread on the menu. There are no vegan/plant based options and the staff are not very informed about allergies. Additionally, the service was slow and the drinks were sickly sweet. Came to Shaw's for brunch based on a friend's recommendation and I must say, it was a good recommendation. Bottomless mimosas for $26. 4 shooters for $20. The food was delicious as well. I had the steak and eggs and I was content. I will say the sauce that comes with the mushrooms could be thicker and more flavorful, but other than that, it was good. Shaw's Tavern didn't disappoint. Arrived on a Sunday for brunch at 11:30am and I highly recommend it. Parking was super easy to find on 6th street. At 11:30am, the outside was already pretty busy and we were seated on the inside (we had a reservation for 5). The inside is small but quaint. Side note, there are only two bathroom stalls and there always seemed to be a line while we were there. I had a Shaw's Breakfast Platter with pancakes and it was delicious. The music was a good mix that I enjoyed. Huge bonus, you are able to scan the bar code on the table and then split the bill (according to the items you got) and pay without having the waitress to split the check. Overall, the quality of Shaw's Tavern has continued to decline as more and more restaurants face closure in DC. The food is the best part about Shaw's. The menu selection is great and is great for locals who don't want cook some nights or go get brunch. It's simple, priced well. The ambiance is tone deaf. The trivia guy takes forever to get his point across and confusing, the music is way too loud on Cinco de Mayo. People want fun vibes but nobody wants to have to scream across the table on a Tuesday night to have a conversation with their friends. The service has got to be my biggest complaint. This has been the largest decline in Shaw overall... my friends and I went for brunch a few weeks ago and they completely messed up our order, charged us incorrectly multiple times for things, and it took us getting up and going to the host station because the server never came back around. We had a similar night during Trivia, the server was eating while we were trying to close out our check. Similar situation on Cinco De Mayo... My friends have told me I was crazy for liking this place so much, but I'm finally convinced that the service is indeed declining rapidly there. read more

My friends and I came here for brunch with bottomless mimosas for someone's birthday. We had a semi-large party with around 10 people and the restaurant was able to accommodate us, which was very appreciated. Our service was pretty decent minus slow coffee refills - the wait staff was friendly and was on top of ensuring the bottomless mimosas kept coming. Good quality food and a decent environment. Because they had a particularly large group though ours was forced to sit at the front of the restaurant and we had an uncomfortable time getting in and out of our table without forcing a high top near us to continually move. Star is being removed because when the food comes from the kitchen, the staff just barks out the food item which is sometimes not really what it is called on the menu, making it kind of chaotic. It should be on the waiter/staff to know who ordered what and have it sent directly to that person. Another issue is the disingenuous additional tip on top of the 20% service fee for large parties. It isn't clear that the service fee is already included, and when you check out, it suggested an additional tip on top of that (+ a small fee for paying using the app). read more

I come to Shaw's Tavern pretty much every week for trivia with Jeremy--which is awesome. Some of the best prizes in town and supports a local business instead of "big trivia." And while the food happy hour specials end at 7PM, the drink happy hour specials run all night on trivia nights! The best deal is the happy hour pizza for $9. They are massive for that price. I prefer the white one, as the red one can get greasy, and love the option to pay $1 for cauliflower crust. Another great deal is the huge side of mac n' cheese for only $5. It tastes pretty much exactly like boxed mac n' cheese and isn't anything to right home about, but is a great budget option or add-on to something else for not too much extra. In terms of drinks, the happy hour cocktails are all pretty bad (or perhaps just sweet) and I'd recommend getting a well drink or beer instead. In terms of quality food, I love the Brussels and Kale salad (I add grilled chicken typically) or the Loaded Nachos, which come in a skillet. The nachos would be greatly improved by the use of pickled jalapenos instead of raw ones, but alas. My favorite thing is actually the peach cobber. Warm and baked with a crust, not too sweet, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The main downsides to Shaw's Tavern are that they always seem to be out of ingredients--one week we can't get peach cobbler, one week we can't get cauliflower crust, one week we can't get X, Y, Z. And the service is always mixed. Some nights the service is good, and some nights it takes twenty minutes to place an order and they forget your silverware and drink. And, oddly, it doesn't seem to correlate to how busy the restaurant is or who our server is. I can't figure it out! I don't really come for the food--I come for trivia--but I do typically wait to eat there because it is better than anything I'd make at home! read more
