Service here was pretty quick and very nice. We ordered their olives, brocollini, and chicken liver to start and their seafood pasta, oxtail ragu, and wild boar ragu for mains. Everything was delicious. I loved their chicken liver and thought that it was a great pair with their olives, bread, and brocollini. I was pleasantly surprised by their wild boar ragu as it was so flavorful and didn't taste gamey at all (sometimes wild boar does). I stopped in here solo for a quick after work dinner bite. I live right around the corner and had walked past it a bunch, checking out the limited but yummy looking menu. It's a cozy little place, dimly lit and tightly configured. I was greeted immediately upon arrival and told to sit anywhere. My server came over shortly and I already knew that I wanted - the oxtail pappardelle pasta and a glass of wine. The wine selection is a bit limited. I don't remember what I got but I didn't enjoy it much. The meat in the pasta was certainly beef, and tender and tasty. Maybe it was shredded short ribs but it didn't have the unctuous fatty goodness that I associate with oxtail. And I've been eating eat it since it was considered poor people food! If they want to say it was oxtails I won't argue, but it was missing something if it was. The inspection grade was pending. I noticed flies being persistently present both times I stopped in so hopefully they clear that up. The food was otherwise very good but I'm dubious about the oxtail pasta dish. We were excited to try this restaurant because it's highly rated and were sadly underwhelmed. It might've been an off night...so much potential! We snagged reservations for 630pm on a Saturday night and were seated promptly. We started off with burrata and sourdough, which was the absolute highlight. The burrata was CREAAAAMYYY and the bread was buttery and grilled, I literally could not get enough of the bread and was delighted when they gave us a refill. We ordered 3 pasta dishes: Bucatini - undercooked pasta and we could not flag down our server because they were so busy. 30 mins later we finally caught someone's attention and they were able to remove it from our bill. Sad because the sauce was really good. Gnocchi - not fluffy or pillowy. Tasted like frozen gnocchi from the grocery store. Pappardelle oxtail - this was a decent dish and all 3 of us shared it since it was the best pasta dish. Overall, a mediocre experience. We started off with the burrata, it was good but not the best I've had. Wish the burrata was a bigger serving as we had leftover bread. For entrees we ordered one of the nightly specials which was bone-in oxtail risotto and a pasta that contains chicken liver, brown butter, and onion (I'm blanking on the name). We also ordered a bottle of wine, which was delicious and finished off with tiramisu. The tiramisu also could of been better. It was heavy on the cream and almost had a soapy after taste. Busy Mother's Day night at the restaurant. My family got a table at the patio. The table is small, and the chair is not very comfortable. Even it is in the middle of spring but still cold and windy, the heater at the back didn't help at all. Food came fast and delicious. Bread is an extra and need to order as a side dish. - Insalata Pompelmo is yummy, and I love it. The sweet and sour contrast with funnel and arugula very good. - Insalata Mistacanza is okay, just a mix green and a bit too salty for me but my mom and my brother like it - Fritto Misto di Mare (fried mix seafood): pretty big and good for sharing for two or more. - My mom and my brother get Gnocchi and Amatriciana, so I don't know how is like, but they seem to love it. - Coda Alla Vaccinara: Delicious Oxtail, big portion for one if you are super hungry. In my case I share with family so I'm good. This menu is a special menu so I don't know if they will have this dish every day. As long as my mom loves it, I love it too. Macosa is a gem that I am so happy a friend led me to! The interior is warm, cozy, and homey, with lovely service. We tried the olives, a special- the pesto lasagna, and the gnocchi and oxtail ragu. All were absolutely delicious. Fresh, high quality ingredients you can taste. I wish they delivered so I could enjoy it more often! Intimate Italian restaurant. Best for groups of two to four though I did see one group of five squeezed together. We were able to get a reservation at 6:30 on a Saturday walking in about an hour beforehand. By the time we left at 8, all the tables were filled. We shared the burrata with figs for the appetizer. Dressed with some oil and (I believe) rosemary. It was creamy and gooey. I'd recommend it! For the main course, we shared the rigatoni allá Norma, the bucatini amatriciana, and one of the specials - an oxtail risotto. I was happy with all three items. All the dishes were on the savory side which happens to be my preference. Pastas were all tender. I believe they were freshly made. Oxtail was cooked perfectly. Succulent and tender! For dessert, we shared the tiramisu and a slice of olive oil cake. The tiramisu was the favorite at our table. Service was attentive. The pacing of the food was nice too. The staff kindly allowed us to lounge a bit after dinner which we appreciated. There was only one restroom. It was gender neutral and spacious. Portions are on the smaller side but only by American standards--in France or anywhere else the portions would be perfectly sized. Because they're on the smaller side for US metrics the dishes are more affordable, however ($22 for the gnocchi I believe). The flavor was the gnocchi was would not change a thing. Forgot the name of the other dish but it was also although I could see it getting salty (I only had a bite). I want to say it was good, but I expected a bit more from this place given the fact it was recommended. Got the following: Burrata with roasted fig - I wasn't sure if I would like this since I am not a big fig fan, but this was surprisingly pleasing. Gnocchi - okay, this was disappointing. Walking up to Macosa Trattoria it's quaint and intimate scenery draws you in and invites you (or you and a friend) to enjoy however on my visit the food was sub par (I ordered the Rigatoni Alla Norma). With noodles that came firm and the dish overall basked in oil. The service was less than desirable on a Tuesday night. My server (can't even name them because they didn't introduce themselves) didn't check on my order till pretty late and after many visual cues. They seemed frustrated at my questions about the menu although I only asked 2-3. At the end of my meal I had to ask another server for the check because of how little they checked on me. At first I had quite the challenge of figuring out what I was going to eat, but from the jump I was told about the oxtail ragu. How could I say no to that????? It was when I ultimately decided upon. It had a lot of sauce and the flavor was smoky with lots of guanciale pieces. I couldn't get enough. If you go here, I definitely recommend getting this dish or two. They also had a great wine selection which is perfect for a date night. This will be a great dinner spot in the summers because they have an outdoor patio. I had the immense pleasure of dining at Macosa Trattoria a couple of weeks ago, and it's been on my mind ever since. I noticed they'd opened a few months ago on my strolls around the neighborhood and made a mental note to return. Who doesn't love Italian food? What I wasn't prepared for was the absolute perfection of my meal. Our table ordered a fritto misto to share, two of the oxtail ragu with pappardelle, a garlic and anchovy spaghetti, and tiramisu to finish. The oxtail ragu deserves poems. Sonnets. Odes. You may think I'm being hyperbolic but seriously. The meat was so, so tender. It nearly melted in your mouth. If you're familiar with oxtail then you know the care and time it takes to achieve this texture with the cut. The sauce was perfectly seasoned. The pasta! Oh, the pasta. The hands rolling it are gifted by the gods. Perfect texture. Perfect shape. We spent the entire meal talking about how good every bite was. And while I'm sure you see what the apple of my eye was, the spaghetti dish is also deserving of high praises. As I borrowed the plate to taste, I contemplated just...not giving it back. I was willing to take that risk. The tiramisu is a very large portion that's very well suited for sharing. It was a perfect balance of sweet with the slight bitterness that coffee adds. The service was amazing. Salvatore was a gracious host who seated us just as they were closing for the evening. Super grateful for his generosity. From the charming staff and owner to the handwritten menus, Macosa Trattoria feels like something out of a New York fairytale storybook (it helped that we ended up here on a stormy night). The owner recommended I pair my gnocchi (delicious) with a white negroni (my new favorite drink) and recommended the bucatini to my friend. (Bare with me) Growing up I didn't like italian food because my only reference was Olive Garden. My life changed one beautiful day back in May of 2019 when an Italian friend of mine recommended that I try amatriciana at her favorite restaurant in Rome. Ever since then, I've been on the hunt for it in the states. I choose Italian restaurants based on if they have the dish or not and mentally rank them on whether or not they were anywhere near as good as the first time I had it. Among the 20+ Italian restaurants i've been to all across the US that offer amatriciana, Macosa's version is by far the best one and it's not even close. I can't even begin to describe the love I have for Macosa. I came across it sometime summer 2022 while living in Bed-Stuy in my search of delicious italian restaurants that offer this dish and haven't stopped going since. (the food review) Aside from the Amatriciana (which for my lactose intolerant friends you can ask for with cheese on the side), the wild boar ragu and the coda Alla Vacinara (one of their specials) are absolutely delicious. They have a yummy selection of antipasti, one of my favorites being the watermelon salad that they offer in the summer as a special. I can't recall if they offer a cocktail menu in addition to their wine menu but, i've had Gin Gimlets which were really good but my favorite is definitely their espresso martinis. Probably the best i've had from all the places i've been. Last comment on food is their desert. I love their tiramisu and the olive oil cake is yummy too! Aside from the absolutely amazingly delicious perfectly made food, what I love about Macosa is the staff and the ambiance. From all the times i've taken myself on solo dates there and brought friends, i've (hopefully) established myself as a regular and a friendly face. Everyone is so nice and you can tell they are happy to be working there. The back patio was recently redone and it is perfect when the weather allows it. I can confidently say it is one of my top 10 favorite restaurants across all cuisine types. Last time I was in NY a few weeks ago I went two days back to back and ordered the amatriciana dish twice each time because I couldn't get enough. Having eaten my way through Italy in places like Tuscany, Cinque Terre, Amalfi Coast & Sardinia, I am always up for a good authentic Italian meal. Some places get pretty close to my spoiled standard of Italian but Macosa Trattoria really hit the mark for me. For starters, we had the marinated castelveltrano olives and fried artichokes.The olives were perfectly marinated with a hint of citrus flavor, not salty and not bitter but fresh and flavorful. The fried artichokes came with 4 florets fried with an extra crispy tip mixed in a lemon, parsley and mint salad. The plate seemed small but the portions were surprisingly just enough. For dinner, we shared the oxtail pappardelle and fritto misto. The pasta was fresh and the flavors in the oxtail sauce was incredible. We considered ordering a other plate but glad we didn't cause as I mentioned earlier the plates seemed small but were surprisingly just enough. The fritto misto arrived last and included pulpo, calamari, a small fish filleted with the head and some shrimp also with the head fried. The seafood incredibly fresh and the heads fried to perfection. We ate every bit of it. For dessert, we had the tiramisu and olive cake. Best tiramisu I've had in a while. It was perfect in every way. The olive cake was also amazing. It was topped with candied lemons and a bit of flaky salt giving it a lovely balance of sweat and salty which I am typically not a huge fan of but this one was incredible. Im so happy we stumbled across this place! Its a pretty small venue but less known so each time we have walked in without having to wait to be seated.
