Let me tell you about the best Po-boy spot in BK...potentially NYC. Lowerline is cozy, nothing too crazy and the prices are A-1. The Po-boy is simple and you would think you can make it at home and it would taste the same but the new orleans flavor can't be imitated. The service is dope. The vibe is a welcoming. I lived in New Orleans for five years; am a food obsessed person. I can say that as far as I know Lowerline is the best New Orleans restaurant in the city, by far. If there is a better shrimp po' boy out there in nyc, I would be astounded. Somehow this little place around the corner from my apartment continues to amaze. My husband and I have been going for the oysters, etouffe and red beans and rice since they opened. We've happily strayed from our faves a few times -- shrimp in butter Worcestershire sauce, gumbo, muffuletta -- but tonight I ordered the shrimp po' boy and my face fell off. Crusty bread, shredded lettuce, just the right amount of mayo and the most perfectly cooked, juicy fried shrimp. Not sure if I can ever order anything else again! read more

I'm from New Orleans, so I'm usually pretty skeptical of 'Creole/Cajun' restaurants outside of Louisiana. Based on the reviews and reading through the menu on Yelp, I decided it was worth a try. The atmosphere is welcoming yet simple. I ordered the half shrimp po' boy and cup of seafood gumbo. Both were great. I'm not sure I've ever ordered gumbo from a restaurant and actually enjoyed it before, so this says a ton. The po' boy was dressed simply and authentically with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo. No crazy proprietary sauces or extra ingredients. The shrimp were deveined and cooked perfectly. The only thing it needed was hot sauce, which sat on each table. I was definitely happy to see Crystal hot sauce, a greater New Orleans area staple. It took me back to what my grandma always had on her dinner table. My boyfriend ordered the crawfish étouffée, which was also pretty good. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. At the end of the meal, he brought complimentary Cafe Du Monde panna cotta along with our check. The little treats were delightful and a great way to end our meal. I'll definitely be back! read more

Wow, I am so glad to have this place in Prospect Heights, the food is amazing!! They also have a great oyster happy hour on weekdays :) It's a very cute little restaurant that's perfect for a date night or catching up with friends. John, the owner, really goes above and beyond for his customers: I got married this June and wanted to use oyster shells as my guest table assignments, and he donated about a week's worth of oyster shells for me to use for the big day! Stopped by for lunch - raw oysters (delish and fresh), seafood gumbo and my husband had the crawfish etouffee. The restaurant is tiny - there are some seating at the bar- so if you plan to go with a large group, not ideal but the food was outstanding! I love Cajun food and the flavor was so authentic! As my husband and I walked down Washington remarking about the limited mid-range dining options, we stumbled across Lowerline. What a pleasant surprise! We shared the simple but delicious Lowerline Salad. Hubby had a bowl of seafood gumbo and I had the oyster po-boy/gumbo combo with a glass of Muscadet. The gumbo was flavorful and the po-boy had ample fresh oysters that were perfectly fried. Bonus cafe au lait pana cotta was the perfect topping to a lovely dinner. read more

We stumbled on this spot looking for a quick early dinner near the Brooklyn Museum. The space is so cozy, the staff is welcoming, and the food is amazing. The table had po' boys and fries, and we were all delighted with our food. These are some of the best fries I've ever had. We even got an extra order to take with us. The coffee panna cotta served at the end of the meal was delicious. We don't live in the city, but we're already plotting a trip back so we can visit Lowerline again. read more

This place just opened up 2 1/2 weeks ago. Went down to Brooklyn to the Brooklyn museum to checkout David Bowie is- exhibition. FYI it ends this month so go check it out. This restaurant is small but cozy. Seats about approx.14 folks at a time. About 6 stools and the rest tables. We arrived early but were told they didn't open up until 5pm, we arrived around 4pm. We decided to hit a local bar in the neighborhood called Washington Commons 2 blocks down on the corner), a real nice friendly hipster bar. Happy hour $4 bloody Mary's & trust me they were homemade & pretty damn good. Spend an hour there & headed back to the New Orleans Lowerline right at 5pm. Friendly staff & service. To my surprise the food as simple as it was, was excellent. They serve wine & beer only , which is better than nothing. I had the 1/2 oyster po' boy & gumbo soup special. My wife had the beef po' boy , my brother had the shrimp po' boy & soup. Everything hit the spot, the sandwiches are delicious and the soup delightful. I have to return to go back & try the seafood etouffee. We also had a dozen oysters which were nice & fresh. Little businesses like this need community support , so let's show our support everyone. I would hate to see this place be another come & go restaurant. A now you see it now you don't. read more

I loved this place! Great addition to the Brooklyn food scene. I tried the shrimp and roast beef po boys and thought they were both phenomenal. Quite possibly the best po boys I have ever had and that is saying a lot given I went to school in New Orleans. The restaurant has a really cool vibe as well. I came into lowerline with my wife and friend around 6:30 pm because I love cajun food. My wife owns a flower shop a few blocks North on Washington Ave, and had sold the owner some flowers, so we wanted to try out and support a new local business. I found this small, stylish restaurant quite comfortable and friendly. The owner was at the counter and we sat at a table by the window. The waitress informed us that there was a special $1. Per oyster happy hour special that would end at seven, but not to worry as long as we place our order before seven. We immediately ordered a dozen each. When they arrived they were really fresh, cold and sweet, resting on giant plates of crushed ice garnished with fresh lemon wedges and dipping sauces. They were a perfect appetizer! We each ordered a different dish to try out the menu. My friend ordered the crab gumbo, my wife the red beans and rice with chorizo sausage, and I ordered my favorite Cajun dish, crawfish ettoufee. The gumbo had a wonderful crab flavor including the roe, the red beans and rice really rich, hearty and filling, and the ettoufee was buttery and filled with shelless crawfish tails that were plump and really easy to eat. Each dish had totally unique seasonings and flavors that were not salty, but complex. After our meal we were given a complimentary small coffee custard that was creamy and delicious, not too sweet, perfect for an adult palate. When we got the bill, it was not scary but really quite reasonable for a great meal in a nice local spot with an owner who is hands on with high quality standards. I enthusiastically recommend the Lowerline for authentic Cajun food you could eat regularly without breaking the bank! read more

As a native New Orleanian, I'm a pretty tough critic of New Orleans style restaurants, but this one is terrific. Authentic po-boys, crawfish etoufee, and gumbo were all enjoyed by my group of 5. And the complementary cafe au lait custard for dessert was the perfect little bite of sweet to finish the meal. Table seating is limited to 8 (so we took up most of that) but there is also bar seating where you can watch your oysters being shucked. Prices are right, too. read more

Service - good. Gumbo - great (full disclosure, I don't have a "authentic" point of reference), but I didn't know what to do with the bits of crab in shell in the stew. This place is legit! The food was amazing and the staff is super friendly. Went with a friend of mine who lives in Manhattan while out in New York for work. I've been to New Orleans several times and the food at Lowerline rivals the best I've had there. We had the oysters, shrimp, roast beef po boy, red beans and rice with ham and the Étouffée. It was all so good! After starting with the oysters I couldn't decide what to end with since each dish was so well done. The bread used for the po boy was great! The flavors of every dish were all done perfectly. They even had Abita beer! Keep up the great work guys. I'll be out the next time I'm in town for sure! read more

Authentic Louisiana Food! As a near life long New Orleanian, I feel qualified to judge this restaurant. On a trip to Brooklyn to visit the museum, we stopped at Lowerline for a late lunch. The gumbo rivals any I have ever had! My husband loved the raw oysters; we both loved the poor boys (pulled pork & roast beef). This is a must destination for any Louisiana expats or those who love our cuisine. read more

I'm so happy that I had the chance to go here yesterday because I imagine that the masses will converge on this gem and I won't be able to get in again. Where to start, the people are charming, the place is intimate, and then, there's the food. The crispy fried oysters were the stuff of legend, I made a critical error in not ordering more of them, the fresh ones were fantastic too. The gumbo was authentic, aromatic, silky goodness...it was really annoying having to share the cup with my beloved. Next time, I'll order my own bowl...and probably everything else on the menu. Came here after a Thursday night visit to the Brooklyn Museum. Super cozy. 4 or 5 two top tables plus the bar. We had the "house beer and oysters" special and a shrimp Po boy and the hambone rice and beans. All were fantastic. The shot of Café du monde dessert (kind of a coffee mousse) was a nice surprise and the perfect way to end the meal. Can't wait to go back. read more
