Came on a Saturday after an event in the city as a last minute thing, I'd say it was around 11 ish; it wasn't packed and I sat at the bar. The place isn't that big but it's cozy, if you want to come drink or get something to eat and not be bothered or if you want to do a first time date/Meet and greet to talk then it's good. I ordered the salmon with Mac n cheese, the salmon was good but the mac needs improvement; It looked and tasted like boxed man n cheese but not too bad. And for a drink I had the frozen strawberry I believe mixed with Pina colda and Wray n nephew; that was good. I went back the following day on mother's day and Jazz was playing, pretty mellow again, not packed. This time I ordered the jerk chicken taco and the fish taco; I was glad I could mix n match. The fish taco was good and the jerk chicken taco was also good; although a little dry. For a drink i saw some people drinking some green juice and decided to try it; it's called the swamp juice made with rum and other stuff I was told that's secret; its a pretty good drink. I'm being generous here with this rating. Where do I begin??? First not one employee had a mask one. Oh, but there was hand sanitizer available. Upon arrival we waited for help to be seated. No one came over so we proceeded to seat ourselves. When we went to sit in a corner, we were told we could not there because were a party of two and the table sat four. The restaurant was practically empty at the time. Okay on to the food and service. The apple salad was very wet. It was drenched in dressing. The fish had absolute no seasoning with the exception of the lemon wedges on the side. The chicken was salty. The service was very slow. The bartender/waiter placed water on the table but never came around to refill our glasses. We literally almost died because it was over 90 degrees outside and no AC inside. So by now your wondering why the two stars. One star for the great house music playing and one star for decor. The restaurant had a cozy feel to it. This wonderful night we had in soul summit ended with the worse service ever. We arrived 9:31pm exact. There was 4 people,two of us order our meal before the waitress beasicallt ignored our request. She told us that she was putting in our orders , and she would be back momentarily.she came back at 9:59 to take the orders of our two other guest after trying to flag her down multiple times. She took our guest order then came back out 3 mins later and told us that the kitchens closed, and ask us did we still eat it to order drinks. we resentfully agreed,when the drink came out 10 mins later the ice was already melted and the drink tasted like apple sauce water. Mango margarita on the rocks $7 Happy hour 3-8p daily. Margaritas are $5. Lunch special orders also receive margaritas for $5 but menu is limited with a couple sandwiches. Mango margarita had kick. They do not play you with the alcohol. Jerk chicken leg quarter with Mac and cheese. The skin of the chicken was so flavorful. The Mac and cheese although good was missing something. I've came here twice- once for dinner and once for brunch. The flavors of the dishes I had were AMAZING. Not too salty and marinaded just right. It also doesn't make you feel too heavy and groggy. I wanted to give four stars but I'm giving five because the customer service made up for the overcooked chicken and the wait time. For dinner I had the BBQ chicken & mac. The chicken was over cooked- almost rubbery. I still ate the entire thing. We went during happy hour so we had about 12 drinks between us both (mango, guava, pineapple etc) For brunch- I had the fried chicken & mac. My girlfriend had the fish whiting and waffles. The food satisfied our hunger but wasn't something I would recommend as a "go to" , but for a quick bite to eat then it's perfect. I frequent this restaurant often as I live in the neighborhood. My favorite dish is the Curry Mussels with a Sea Water on the side. Although it is a cute, quaint spot what upsets me is the lack of consistency. Sometimes they open when they want, sometimes they just randomly decide to be "Bar only" and it's very unfair because even if one was to call and try to see what's happening for that day the number doesn't work. This spot has so much potential and the owner needs to tighten up. I enjoy it when I'm able to catch them otherwise the gamble is not worth the disappointment if you can't catch them. read more

Unfortunately, this place is no longer suitable. They won't seat you if your whole party is there UNLESS the hostess knows you. 2/3 of my party was there. We were waiting on one more. The woman that walked in seconds before us was also waiting for someone - he seats her. Then tells me he knows her and that's why he disregarded their policy and sat her even though her whole party hadn't arrived. This policy is custom for a lot of restaurants and I get it, but if that's the policy, apply it to all. Don't be selective. I was shocked by the level of incompetence displayed by the staff, particularly when it came to something as basic as knowing their own opening hours and effectively communicating with customers. I wouldn't wish this experience on my worst enemy. I bet they would've opened on time if there was something happening at the Barclays. The food is very cheap for NYC brunch. $15 meal and $1 mimosas for as long as you're still eating is a steal. And they let you get 2 at a time, which is nice. Seated as soon as we got there. However, we waited for our food for an hour. Then once we asked the status of our food, the hostess (not a server. Not even sure if I saw one the whole time I was here) brought our food out almost immediately. We both ordered chicken and waffles and the waffles were cold. The chicken are tenders. Finally comes the time to pay. The first server I saw all day asks us if we want to add gratuity and my friend did. That's when I saw that gratuity was already included in our bill. So we paid $16 in tip for our meals that were cold and not amazing. We immediately asked for a refund so we could not add additional tip because at that point, we would rather wait longer and have our money back. Cheap, but not worth it. read more

My best friend and I came here a few times for their brunch special. But the last time we went, the bartender accidentally didn't charge us for something and the manager expected us to pay, after the fact. The employee left for the day already too. After going back and forth about why we shouldn't have to pay and the unprofessionalism of expecting customers to pay for an employee's mistake, the manager decided not to charge us. I was very irritated during that moment. Also keep in mind that on the day we went, which was sometime in December, they had a "B" food rating. I mentioned that as I was walking out and the bartender tried to defend the business saying it's an old building, it's New York, etc. I work in the health department and I know that it takes a lot for a food establishment to not get an "A" during inspection. There's even a website for transparency about why a restaurant got its rating. For them to try and defend themselves by stating it's an old building was absolutely ridiculous. I didn't check the inspection grading website but I'm certain they got a lot of health violations. In conclusion, I won't be going there again. read more

My friend and I came in on a Thursday evening around 6pm. She highly recommended this place based on their brunch so we decided to check out their dinner. We were seated right away at a table by the window. Unfortunately, it was a very cold night and being right next to the window was very chilly even though the window was closed. I really enjoyed it and so did my friend even though she did mention it was a tad bit strong for her which depending on your taste could be a good or a bad thing. I loved it and only needed 2 to feel a good buzz. Another great thing about Brooklyn Moon is that the happy hour goes until 8pm! For food I ordered the bbq chicken wings from the appetizer menu and a side of Mac and Cheese. The wings were packed with delicious flavor. Like seriously finger licking good! The Mac and cheese was also very good. Around 7:30 a screen was brought down in the back of the restaurant where they started playing a basketball game. I think this was the only screen in the place maybe 1 other tv; therefore this isn't the place to come if you are looking to watch multiple games or sporting events. But this is definitely a palace to come and enjoy good food and strong drinks with friends. The service was speedy and attentive. I've been maybe four times now over the course of a few years, but the vibe is always warm and inviting. I most recently came this past Friday evening to the same chill, make yourself comfortable vibe. The waiters and bartender were friendly and made me feel welcome with my initial bar seating that transitioned to a table for two. I was kind of thrilled to see Banks beer in the mix, since I haven't seen that in a bar since a trip to Barbados or an island, so while I wasn't quite in a beer mood, I got it for nostalgia's sake. I don't recall the name of my cocktail but it tasted exactly as described: cranberry w. mango nectar and some spirit. It tasted light at first, but the alcohol was creeping at the bottom of the glass. Hunger caught me, so I got a side of curried potato and laughed because instinct told me it'd come with the potato skins--consistent with Brooklyn Moon's almost-but not quite island offerings. Headed to Brooklyn Moon for Saturday Brunch with friends and upon walking in, I immediately knew I was at the right spot.  The location was cosy, the wait staff was pleasant and it felt like a homey atmosphere.  We sat at the bar and let me tell you first hand, the bartender with the fabulous nails was amazing.  She was attentive and made our first round of mimosas quickly and homegirl did not skimp on the champagne.  The drinks flowed as did conversation; this bartender was a true delight.   As far as the food, I would give the egg platter 5/10.  Everything looked great on the plate but my first bite into the eggs was eye-opening as I crunched on SHELL.  The last time I had a bite of eggs with the shell was when I was a kid and made them myself.  What happened chef!?! I honestly wish I could write this review with zero stars. My experience tonight has been the worst service I have experienced EVER. My friend and I came to enjoy happy hour and have dinner and literally waited over 40mins for our drinks because the server forgot to put it in. Then after putting in our drinks she comes back to let us know that she forgot to put in our food order because she lost the ticket. We asked to speak with the manager who is behind the bar at this point making drinks. She comes over personally to bring us our drinks and sets them down quickly and says that the drinks are on the house and our food will be fired right up and walks away. We didn't even get a chance to get a word in because she moved so quickly. How will our food be out in if the server doesn't even know what we ordered? The customer service and lack of professionalism really disappointed me as I have heard great stories about this place. It has been over an hour now we are drinking a subpar mango margarita that the manager made herself waiting for our server to come back to see if she put the right order in. My friends really wanted to try the food... so we did. - Calamari.... very good, spicy and seasoned, lightly breaded and tender. - Jerk chicken wings... Okay, too much char so a bit dry - mac and cheese... Okay, a bit oily and mildly spicy - Cat eggs... WTF?! that name just disturbs me.. but it was okay, a mildly ripe plantain wrapped in turkey bacon and deep fried. - Drinks... mixed drinks were strong and inexpensive but my friend had to wait 15 minutes for a beer and found out they were out, ordered another and 10 min later, they were out of that too!!! 5 min later he finally got a beer and it wasn't cold. I remember, back in 1995, I would walk by this dimly lit place on Fulton Street in Fort Greene, that had a cool, hip appeal to it. I would hear the sounds of aspiring poets, and even singers espousing verses so, so sweet and mellow, so empowering and uplifting. No food and alcohol were served at the time, but the atmosphere was just right. In (I believe) 1996, this same little place started to serve food. I was about 3 years out of the military (and for a short time facing homelessness), I was working for a small office supply store making about $9 per hour, while pursuing an Associate's Degree in Business Management. My pockets were lean, and often my diet consisted of Top Ramen (and sometimes Boar's Head turkey). But when I got a little more, it was great to know that I had a new sit-down restaurant that I could go to in the neighborhood, with that cool mellow vibe. The menu would market to the community (and their pockets) having daily lunch specials with names like the "The $5 Dollar Joint" a few years later on in 2000's the name was changed to "The Recession Special" (going up only to a mere $2.95 more). The special would consist of either a Salmon Burger, Turkey Burger, or Fish Sandwich with a choice of any side on the menu (my go to would be either the Apple Salad or the Spicy Fries). For years, these options were kept on the menu. I knew I could always count on Mike and the Brooklyn Moon to provide a satisfying and tasty option to fill my stomach. The many friends I would introduce to this place would be impressed with the quality of the food that this little place would turn out. They would also have things like Almond Crusted Trout, Fried and Barbecue Chicken, etc. Often 2 people could eat a satisfying meal for less than $40 (even when ordering from the main entrees). In 2016, I no longer saw "The Recession Special", but I got introduced to the delicious, curried mussels, the Jerk Wings, and my current favorite, the Fish Bowl (chunks of Cornmeal battered, fried whiting fish, seasoned just right) portioned just right for 2 to share. I could tell that Mike wanted to make sure that the people in his community would know that they could count on him to provide a reasonably priced meal to eat, place to chill, and be entertained. The Brooklyn Moon was born during a time of the Fort Greene Renaissance. Much of what made the neighborhood of Fort Greene so special was the ethnic diversity of the many businesses that contributed to it (This can be referenced in the Documentary "Brooklyn Boheme" by Nelson George with notable reference to the Brooklyn Moon and the talent that would often congregate there). Even in recent years, I would see actors like Wood Harris (known for "The Wire) and Jeffrey Wright ("Basquiat", "Board Walk Empire", Westworld") pass through. The Brooklyn Moon is part of the "DNA" of what Fort Greene (an essential part of Brooklyn) is today, and its absence will be felt by us that remember it. The Brooklyn Moon, after 28 years, is essentially the last business standing of what makes the Fort Greene community so great. It has been there for me during both great and difficult times. I plead that we could return the love and come to its aid, now that they are facing the eminent threat of their doors closing for good (Due to what many businesses suffered due to the pandemic). Great food, with mediocre service. My best friend and I were looking for a trendy, after-work spot with good food on a Friday night. I have heard good things about the Brooklyn Moon Cafe, so we headed straight there. We got there a little after 9pm and there was a 45 minute wait. We opted to wait so, the hostess took my number and sent a text when the table was ready. The restaurant is located centrally on Fulton street, so there are ample places to waste time or choose otherwise. Its a small place with dated decor. The walls were covered with mirrors and behind the bar were some type of shelves. I didn't understand what the theme was but an upgrade on the decor is much needed. As you dine or drink, you'll hear some classic reggae, surrounded by good food and a trendy crowd. Once we were seated, a young man introduced himself as our waiter. We asked for a few moments to view the menu and he obliged. At least 3-5 minutes later, a waitress dressed for the club, came over and asked if we were ready to order. My best friend (bf) and I, still trying to figure it out, began to ask questions about the menu. My bf really wanted to try a tilapia entree, so she asked "how good is it?". The waitress, a representative of this establishment said "its ok, but it's not real fish". Girl, no...just no. Don't say that. Not even Red Lobster would've admitted that. We continued to ask questions, including an inquiry about the side offerings. The waitress pulled the menu from my bf, slid it across the table and began pointing to the selections with her nails. Unnecessary and felt like a sign of impatience. Finally we ordered, she walked away but she didn't write anything down. A minute later she came back to confirm parts of the order. Food came out quickly. The waiter brought our food and came back to check on us. We didn't see the waitress until we were barely done with our meal. By that time she was ready with the check. Aside from that, the food is pretty good and priced reasonably. For starters, we had the jerk wings which were soooo darn delicious. They are spicy and by spicy, I mean there's a chance you might cry. But I like spice therefore, I loved it! For my entree, I had the fried whiting fillet with a side of Mac and cheese. Both of which were good but could've used some more flavor. They were cooked exceptionally well though. My bf had the grilled salmon and she loved it; even ended up being food home for her fiancé. The atmosphere here is good for happy hour, space is pretty tight and it gets crowded. Happy hours are Mon-Fri. 6pm to 8pm with $5 margaritas. The Guava Margarita is so good & so is the food. I got the jerk chicken entree with rice & peas as a side, this dish was delicious! They even give you a gravy on the side that comes with the rice, so good. The jerk chicken is spicy and they use the best part of the chicken, drum & thigh! Music was at a bare minimum you might just hear it if you seating by the bar. He slammed our food on the table, yelled at myself and friends, cursed us out for not ordering bigger plates, out his hands in our drinks, snatched the menus from our hands and then threw the receipt at us. I personally enjoy Brooklyn Moon for their brunch, however I came with some coworkers for happy hour. The drink prices were good but what I ordered .. I was not a fan of. I got margaritas (great! & a lot of flavors) but I also ordered a salmon burger that was very mushy. I didn't finish it and just ate the fries. I know everywhere makes it differently and maybe i should've asked for it to be cooked longer? Not sure- maybe I'm not hip to it but it's not my first salmon burger and that wasn't what I expected. Overall, I'd still go here for happy hour (just drinks or small apps) and brunch! read more

I was walking around with my dog and an employee told me to hold my dog back because he spreads rat poison around the entrance to keep dogs away. Extremely infuriating and disappointing, and means that people outside are exposed to it as well. Do better. read more

LOL! Some of these 5 star ratings are quite questionable. Either people don't know any better or are friends of the management. There's no way I'd give this spot 5 stars or even 3. Luckily they didn't get 1. I came here a few weeks ago with a friend, and the ONLY reason why I'm giving it TWO stars, is because the hostess that I had was actually a sweetheart. Very talkative, welcoming and attentive. HOWEVER... the food was trash. Honestly. I could cook better and open up my own restaurant with my cooking, and make a killing if THIS is considered amazing food lol right... The only reason why I even went to this place is because a friend RAVED about how great this spot was. (Maybe she went years ago when there was a different cook or something) because this time? Food was below subpar. (And obviously rushed) The crab cakes were small, on a bed of skimpy lettuce (the same 'spring mix' I have in my fridge), the shrimp wasn't really seasoned, just overly SPICY. The corn was OBVIOUSLY canned corn, no seasoning, no FLAVOR. The "yams" were "blah". (I took photos of the food, and I made it look good because I'm a photographer. So that comes natural.) But the food was seriously very mediocre. My friend mentioned her so called peas and rice even tasted like boxed Zatarains rice you get from the super market. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was. The two drinks I ordered were WEAK and over priced. $10 for a drink, you'd think you'd taste the alcohol right?... I ordered one thinking that maybe I just wasn't feeling the effects yet. I'm a drinker so I know when a drink is just so good that it'll creep up on you, or when a drink was just carelessly made. So I ordered ANOTHER thinking maybe the second time I'd get a better drink? WRONG. Second drink was WEAKER. I mean, really. I didn't feel anything. It was like drinking juice. Whoever was working the bar couldn't be a real bartender. There's NO way... The quote on quote "ambience" was cute and all, but I still most definitely won't be coming back here, honestly. There's WAY too many awesome food spots out here for me to be giving a place I had a trash experience, a second chance. No thanks. Like I said, the only thing I can say I enjoyed about the place, was our server. Nice looking, tall, very friendly man (wish I knew his name) but he made my visit more worthwhile than the food.
