Sunday outdoor brunch. In the area and someone passes me a flyer about a Brunch and Day Party. I hear there's going to be soca music playing so of course I'm walking over. Party was suppose to go to 10p. Summary: The fete was lit! The music was great! The service was meh and the food was ok. 3.5 but I round up because I'd probably go back. Got a table and was seated fairly quickly. It had to be after 3pm. I probably should have known something was up since there was no line. Placed our order, then we just cooked in the heat. There were umbrellas so we had some cover but there didn't seem to be any particle of a breeze to hit us. While we roast in the sun, is when we notice that there isn't any live music set up as advertised. The vendor for hookah was also no where to be found. Many emotions waved in and out as you sit and wait on food hungry AF on a Sunday. *To be fair our last meal was probably 8pm the day before - before partying late until the morning.* We stuff down out shrimp and grits, crab cakes, waffles, and champagne. It was ok. But this food took nearly 40 minutes to get to our table. Not many tables were there and only a few were packed. Whoever was selling bottles circled a lot. 2 bottles (of basic stuff) starting at $400 and the day party was maybe $30+. Brunch over, sun going down, and now more people flooding in and everyone drinking. A lot of local music play til at least 6/7 before they start playing soca. At this point it's a lit Caribbean Fete but that day party that doesn't start til after night fall?? The fete was lit! The music was great! The service was meh and the food was ok. read more

Wow. Wowowow. For 10 years I've heard my southern husband complain about the lack of authentic chopped bbq in NYC.. One lunch at Sugarhill and he was licking his plate Eddie the owner is as charming as they come, and Carrie our server was extra attentive (she even brought out extra water for our pup). This place is AMAZING! Went on a Saturday around 2:30 and it was not that crowded. It a very BIG space so you don't feel like you are on top of another group of people. When we first got up the stair we were greeted by a lovely woman who let us pick where we could sit. We looked over the menu and she took our order. The entrees came with two sides. We have prime rib with collard greens and macaroni and cheese...and oxtail with Mac & cheese with rice & peas...then an order of a side salad and a half & half with was half lemonade half tea. After placing our order our waitress asked if we would love some cornbread. YES!!! Once we got the basked of cornbread and roll it came with whipped butter! The cornbread was amazing!!! But the roll was extravagant! About 15 minutes later we got our entrees. Every single bite was delicious! Our experience here exceeded expectations. The cherry on top was when the owner came and had a conversation with us and showed us that Hilary Clinton has came and ate at this place! Pros: the fried chicken is good. Cons: everything else. I threw my mom a birthday party here last night. Here's a run down of the evening. I arrived to no one to really greet me. After paying for the spot. Upon setting up. There was NO AC on at all. I asked the manager (Eddie) for air. To which he replied. No. My chocolate cover fruit was melting before my guest even arrived. I finally had to be a tad more aggressive to get air. Once finally getting air and the party starting it took over an hour to get food that I prepaid for. I had to ask the bar made continuously. Which was always met with an attitude. Once I got the food (which was handed to me in the hallway. (It was not brought into my party. I did it myself. ) I asked for water from the bar maid/cook/dancer. And was told to wait repeatedly. Please keep in mind that liquids are not allowed so I couldn't even bring in bottles water. The party was for my mom and her guest were of a particular age. There was no water to give them. After asking several times and sending family to ask. The "bar maid" told my cousin they did t have water. SO WHAT WERE YOU GONNA BRING ME THIS WHOLE TIME! The bathroom smells moldy. The DJ was horrible and could not read the room. He almost played Jazz all night. Never even shouted out my mom even though the club was basically empty with just our party. My cousin pointed out roach spray at the bar (yes raid). Overall I'm glad my mom had a great time but honestly as the person who paid. I am not. And would not use them again. read more

The food is basic with no seasoning or attempt to make it delicious. I ordered basic appetizer ie chicken fingers and buffalo wings. The wings were hard and dried as if they were refried or simply microwaved. You could not discern the buffalo sauce. The chicken fingers were a tad better but very little seasoning. I ordered white wine instead of a mixed cocktail as I did not want to be surprised. I was surprised anyway!! I've tasted better "box wine". Switched to red and that offered some relief! The service was slow, the waitress was overworked and stressed and even asked me to Hold the tray with my food while she serviced another table!! I would not recommend this place. They had a built in tip or what the waitress described as a "service fee". When I asked what is the difference between service fee and tip The waitress was coy and did not attempt to explain. A neighborhood staple if you belong to a neighborhood called HATERVILLE. But before I address that: - Slowest service on this planet. It took us 20 minutes to get glasses of water, so you do the math. - Why is the hostess prancing around in 5-inch stilettos? Honey, this is not a fashion runway, I can see the Home Depot parking lot across the street. - The bar has more minute maid lemonade in stock than actual alcohol. - The food was medicore at best. For being a soul food restaurant, I was a bit disappointed with the choices. And my eggs were bland. - If your bill is over $25, then you're automatically charged tax and gratuity. At first you're like, "oh aight...." Then after having gone through the experience, you're like "SHUT UP RIGHT NOW!" With that out of the way, yes -- Sugar Hill is for the haters. My friends and I had to sit through one of the most uncomfortable, homophobic, and sexist comedy acts of all time. I came here to eat brunch and chill with my boos, not listen to some clown whose jokes were retrograde and timing was way off. I didn't get the memo about a comedy act. Whats worse is that while women were being fetishized and words like "faggy" were being thrown around during the acts, none of the patrons or staff seemed to give a hoot. As stated in previous reviews, Sugarhill is a sort of time-warp alternate history version of New York in the 1970s-early 80s, or at least some time when gold trim, drop ceilings, burgundy pile carpet, hunter green accents, and statues of eagles were the height of sophistication. Throw in a live smooth soul/R&B singer with a deep regard for Aaron Neville, some damn good barbecue, and a life size cardboard cutout of the Obamas, and I have this nagging nostalgic feeling that I'm back in Jackson (MS), swinging my legs under the table while my mom goes on about her perennial border and whispers gossip about who did what in her church group. Which is what most of the mothers here are probably talking about, save for the perennial border, since New York has no plants. It is very, very difficult to get 'real' Southern food in New York. There are pale imitative concerns as well as some better institutions, but the majority of restaurants in the city serving what purports to be Southern is sort of like a latter-day-Aaron-Neville-greatest-hits-compilation-that-totally-looks-over-the-fact-that-he-is-a-Neville-Brother version of Southern food. No one in NYC Southern restaurants calls you 'hon' or looks askance if you don't finish your ginormous fried catfish platter AND all your vegetables. Except at Sugarhill. Sugarhill is most definitely a relic, but of what era or type I have no idea. It's a very rare thing in this world (and in this city in particular) to find a restaurant that is totally lacking in pretension, and yet has more character in one order of its Blackened Redfish than all the fauxthentic NY 'speakeasy' joints have in their Heritage Applejack Muddled Meyer Lemontinis put together. This is the Real Deal, y'all. So put on a church dress and some pumps and make the trek. If you can't manage to finish it all, they'll tuck some good sweet rolls in your doggy bag as a lagniappe, which is just as it should be. read more

Sugar hill is a neighborhood staple and my mom loves their crab cakes, so I've been here many times in different capacities. My family has thrown private parties here, have come to sit down and enjoy the band while dining and sometimes order food for pickup. Sugar hill has stood the test of time and predates gentrification by many decades. During my most recent trip I pre-ordered a few plates on the phone for pickup. A hour after placing this call I was still waiting in my car. Basically it's not the fastest service, but the food is pretty consistent after all this time and it's got other good attributes going. Hence the 4 stars. While sitting and waiting, I was happy to see that they've opened up a backyard area with tables, play music and seems to be a destination for Sunday afternoon drinks. Actually, it was v cute when two of the staff members got into it about some event they were hosting... they were loud but it was funny and reminded me of family function. I was chillin, but almost everyone else working at the time came over to my table to apologize on their behalf . This place was like stepping back in time to the 1970's - from the bevel edge mirrors to the electric piano and live soul singers to the food. It was all so very cool. We'd seen the place ever since we moved into the hood a few months back and it's hard to resist any place that bills itself as not one, but two things that have all but disappeared from our modern landscape: discos and supper clubs. At one point a patron came up to borrow the mic and sing and I thought for all the world it was a karaoke as her voice was unbelievably fantastic. For her second song (we asked as she was leaving) she sang in her coat holding her purse and just rocked putting the mic down at one point and just belting it out. The unbelievable thing is that there was a guy a couple tables down from us sound asleep at the table. All of this seemed perfectly normal here for a Friday night. When we asked our waiter about the singer he was like, "Oh, Joy? Yeah, she's pretty good." So I guess Joy is a regular and our amazing journey back to NYC in the heady 70's of Motown was just another normal night out at Sugar Hill. I think we're going to become regulars here... read more

Rubulad hosted their monthly wacky party here a few weeks ago. It was quite a spot, I have to say. I felt like it was a cross between a chinese banquet hall, a PTA meeting, and a corner saloon dive bar. Very rude...came here for a repass that was suppose to end at 9, and they kicked us out at 8:23 which was crazy. We paid big money, and before we was supposed to leave the waitress was removing food and complaining that we were we was still there. Came here for some take out after the home depot. Although it took 35+ min to get take out, the food was good. The candied yams and mac and cheese were to die for. Pork ribs were moist and tender. Chopped BBQ wasnt much to look at but was delicious, perhaps a little on the salty side. I would also recommend the fava beans, buttery perfection. The collard greens were average. Delicious, authentic, straightforward, honest. These are the words that describe my experience at sugar hill. I went in for lunch and came out with a new respect for the food and the strength it has taken for a black family to keep open and operate this type of old school supperclub in the current and past political and socioeconomic environment. I've never had a bad experience here. Have been here several times recently. Once for their FREE House Music Sunday Afternoon jam. Once for a private engagement party and once for a birthday party. The staff is always attentive and seems genuinely interested in me having a good time. I won't go into details that is merely the bottom line. I am planning on attending the Sunday House Music as often as I can. I just hope they keep having it. read more

Fantastic atmosphere! The band was great and their music had a Jazz/R&B feel to it, going back and forth. It was great and we got some of the best cornbread I've ever been served at a restaurant. So It started off great, however, my entree left me wanting. My girlfriend and I both had issues in fact, her with the flounder she was served and me with the chicken. So yesterday I attended an event at this venue. We were seated and started looking at the menu. My sister and I decided to order "The Adolla" which is steak with double baked potato and broccoli. Underneath the description, it also states serve with 2 sides. So I ordered potato salad and collard greens. So I'm excited that I'm getting all this food. While waiting, I decided to order a rum punch which tastes horrible. I had to send it back and order a Long Island Tea which was worst. The food comes with no baked potato and broccoli. I asked the waitress where are they and she stated it doesn't come with the steak because you ordered two sides. HUH?! I will never dine here again. The service was awful and unorganized. First and foremost, You guy's really need to add a few more bartenders to this establishment, Also occupy the extra bar on the other side. Second, The dress code has changed significantly. You allow anything in there, From durags to jeans hanging below the buttocks. Baseball caps, Also, Children. The age limit should at least be 21. There were definitely people underage in there Saturday night, Drinking and all. I don't care if Rihanna is performing there for FREE. I will NEVER return there AGAIN. I held a birthday party here last week, and I'd never do it again. Let me start by saying I had dinner with my family here on two occasions (upstairs) and the food and service was good. But this was NOT the case during the party! It seems like they bait people w/ delicious food at the restaurant, but don't even bother trying for events. The restaurant's juicy, fried chicken was replaced with incredibly dry fried chicken that most guests threw away. The restaurant's to-die-for macaroni and cheese was replaced with mac and cheese that didn't even taste as good as something you'd make out of the box. And the "soft drinks" that came included in the hefty price that we paid amounted to pitchers of iced tea. There was not 1 soda to be seen! Plus, all of the dishes were scratched and looked old. The party was held downstairs (the only option), which was a big mistake because the bathroom on that floor was embarrassingly dingy with no toilet paper and was located in a room that was as cold as a meat locker. NO EXAGGERATION! This was the same room where the photographer had set up to take pictures and we literally shivered as he readied himself to snap shots. Clearly, Sugarhill was trying to save $$$ by not heating that room since no event was happening there - except that one was: the photography portion of my event. It's bad enough that Sugarhill is dilapidated - No renovations have been done in over 20 years and it shows! - but to prepare lousy food for someone's once in a lifetime milestone birthday and leave a room w/ no heat when it's 34 degrees outside? That's inexcusable! I could go on, but I won't. I just want to warn others not to be fooled into holding any important occasion here. You'll be sorry! No wonder why they make you pay for the entire event up front. read more

I went to the outdoor cafe for Sunday brunch and was surprised with a comedy show on the side. Aside from the fact that brunch isn't the best forum for a comedy show, the two "comics" were extremely offensive and homophobic. Spare me the argument about the nature of comedy, because many of the remarks were not part of a joke. Note to comedians: stick to comedy. But equally to blame is the venue for giving this speech a platform. I felt like I was in a retrograde culture where the word "faggy" is appropriate, just not in front children; we applaud men for the simple fact that they are heterosexual; and men should be harassed for wearing a low-cut v-neck (btw, i greatly respect my friend for handling himself with poise and pride). The managers (yes, there were two present that afternoon) should have had the common sense and decency to politely ask these "comics" to end their routine early. Very few were even paying attention. I read that Sugarhill is a staple in a changing neighborhood. My attempt at supporting them was met with an unsettling affirmation of the stereotype that black culture is anti-gay. Someone missed the memo. We have come so far! President Obama and the NAACP both publicly announced support for gay marriage! Bed Stuy has their own gay pride festival! It's time for Sugarhill to climb out from under the proverbial rock and move forward! Aside from the "comedy" show, the service was slow and the food was not worth it. It was a hot day outside and our table had to wait too long to get water. The wait to then place our order was equally annoying. Ironically, the the staff-to-patron ratio should've worked in our favor, but I'm not sure why one woman was sitting at a register and another woman was sitting at a table counting money. I've never seen this at a sit-down restaurant. The food wasn't bad: staple dishes lacking in creativity and ordinary in taste. I ordered a seasoned and fried tilapia and fries, but it was basically fish and chips that I could've gotten in the freezer isle of key foods. My girlfriend had the famous chicken and waffles, but I'm not sure why they've achieve said fame. My friend had the crab cakes that were okay. We also had a pitcher of mojito that tasted like it was made with Minute Maid. My girlfriend jokes they put diabetes in it as well. Aside from the sugar high, I wasn't buzzed. I've had worst food from a restaurant, but it's often compensated with a low price or killer atmosphere. As if to add insult to injury, they include the tip in all orders over $25, so it's impossible to comment with your wallet. My girlfriend used "Sugar Hill" about 14 years ago for her daughter's baby shower... When I told her I wanted to give my daughter a Bridal Shower, she introduced me to Ms. Sheila..... On Saturday, July 26th, 2014, My daughter had an Elegant, Amazing "Madam Butterfly - Bridal Shower" upstairs in the main resaturant area. From the first draft of plans, Ms. Sheila was on point with my vision. I explained that my daughter was having an destination wedding in the Bahamas. I wanted to have her guests, those who were not able to attend her wedding feel as if they were and would be there. So, I wanted it colorful, bright and tropical. The menu would be a Cocktail Buffet style setup. We had a food and an signature drink tasting. Even when we had to exchange a food item for another because we had guest that were vegetarians, It was okay with Ms. Sheila, we decided on the vegetarian quiche, bbg ribs, potatoe salad, fried chicken and salmon coquettes. We were allowed to add outside food and a cake. My daughter loves butterflies. I expressed that we needed to have them all over. Ms. Sheila came up with the idea to hang them from the ceiling. Along with having them nicely decorated on her piano. The signature drink she created, she named, 'Madam Butterfly". The drink mix were pink and yellow. She added pineapple to the pink drink and strawberries to the yellow. Absolutely delicious and beautiful to look at. The food was extremely tasteful. The guests wanted more and more of everything.......... Including the signature drink. Those who didn't drink, enjoyed the half & half (Ice tea with lemonade) Ms. Sheila and her staff were remarkable, dependable and when I even looked like I needed something or had a question, they were right on point. It was like, we were all moving as one. I can go on and on but you would have had to be there to believe.......... A remarkable job, Ms. Sheila..... And to your staff, I commend!!! I've been here three times so far. Twice late night, after the club and once for brunch. Every time I go I have the chicken and waffles. I'm from LA, so it's not like Roscoe's, but it's very tasty. I don't think anything compares to Roscoe's chicken and waffles! The waffle here is a light belgium waffle, and the chicken has a light flaky batter. They can be a little heavy handed with the pepper, but it's definitely tasty! The breast is nice and juicy, but I'm more of a dark meat girl. Every time I've been there it's been kinda empty, so I'm not sure when it gets packed. I'm assuming they get more of a dinner crowd because of the band set-up and club downstairs. Sugar Hill was my first restaurant around 11 years ago and 11 years later, Sugar Hill gave me the same feeling now as it has done then. I took my fiance out for a night out recently and the service we've received by Sheila by far was the best service we've received in a while. That's the type of service that is missing from many restaurants. As a self-proclaimed crab cake aficionado, I must say the crab cake with the cajun style tartar sauce is in the upper echelon with the many crab cakes I've had in my time. All the food was perfectly seasoned. All of these things combined makes the other reviews that people say about the decor in effect irrelevant. I highly recommend this place to any and everyone and for everything. read more

This is a review for the XXYYXX event that happened on Saturday, the 23rd. Venue is very spacious, staff was friendly including the bouncers out front. Loved the back patio space and food smelled amazing. Huge negative was the sole light on the dancefloor. One big strobe light that didn't seem to be in sync with the music. The whole room was essentially one big strobe. Immensely killed the vibe. Would have been better to have no lights whatsoever. Spent most of the time in the back outside and ended up leaving early because it was just too much of a headache. read more

I just NOW this second came back from there for my sister birthday brunch and i would have to say NEVER AGAIN. We got there about 130pm we sat there for about 1 hour before our orders were taken.To order drinks it felt like we had to beg for them not like we were paying. We would order then that person would dissapear walkin up and down then we tried ordering from someone else and it was the same thing.Then we had to wait unitl after 4 to get our food which of course was cold and ontop of having to wait that long they messed up our order one of our gilrs didnt get her food which made us have to wait another 30 mins.Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh It was just so upsetting. read more

I have been going to Sugar Hill since it has opened up. I continue to support them because it is one of the only Black establishments in the community, I recently had my 50th birthday party there in June 2014. I was married there and I had my wife's Sheila's 50th birthday party there also. They are one of the original clubs in Brooklyn that can still make an Long Island Ice tea. I have always ordered buffet food and have no complaints at all, as a matter of fact all of my guest was happy with the service. I will continue to support them. Ordered food..came out cold, forgot to say waited an extremely long time for everything. Only 2 waitresses but want to cater to 3 different affairs. NOT HAPPENING. So I was in the neighborhood to look at an apt. with the Mrs. We got there early figured we'd Yelp to find somewhere to eat. Not the biggest fan of Soul Food for breakfast, but figured hey it's rated pretty well and Amy Ruth and Sylvias have both been able to pull it off for me in the past. Not here. The foyer in the restaurant smelled like a Pet Shop. When we got upstairs the waiters outnumbered the patrons but it was early so they were all cleaning up. My table was unstable and the waitress took forever to even come by and greet us. I ordered grits with eggs and bacon. The bacon tasted old and overcooked. The grits runny and just nothing like what you would expect in a place known for Soulfood. Our food also took forever to arrive despite the fact that the only other diners in the restaurant had already ordered and received their food. All in all the place was a complete waste of a meal, and given the high ratings I'm either wondering if these people even know what Soul Food should taste like or if they are just happy to not be eating Catfood. Make the trek up to Harlem and eat at either Amy Ruths or Sylvias. At least there you know why you're waiting and it's worth it. read more
