Overall rating: 5 I love this spot. I've been here a few times, with friends, with dates, by myself. I love it! It can be a little crammed on popular days, but it gives me the homey feeling every time. I recently found out they play blue grass on Mondays and it's so fun. I love folksy music. Perfect neighborhood pub. Dimly lit, a few comfy tables and minimal decor. I've actually had some nibbles here too and I was pleasantly surprised by that quality of food. I love the grilled cheese and the chutney that comes with the potato wedges. The wedges are a bit thick for my taste but still good. Cocktails are pretty strong, so you get some bang for your buck. I am pretty torn on this place. I get that it is a more authentic Irish pub in NYC than you would get in, say, midtown ... but there is a lot left to be desired. The food is very meh so don't come here for dinner I would say. The drinks are fine. The Guinness is good (maybe even better than elsewhere). But the service is just atrocious. They really need more bartenders and staff given how busy and crowded it gets. It just feels like the scene is a lot of Brooklyn hipsters cosplaying Irish bargoers. After this first visit, I already know that I want to return here soon. The bar is cozy and chill. This is the type of place where you go to spend time with your significant other or close friends without distractions and within a comfortable environment. The young Irish bartender is a friendly guy. He's very welcoming and attentive. I tried the beef sandwich on soda bread. It was simple yet phenomenal. The fat kid in me wishes I had ordered a second one. We also ordered the cheese plate with a couple cheese styles, some sliced apples, more soda bread, and honey. It's been a while since I've been to Hartley's. I stopped by on a Monday night and I was so happy that I got hit with their "Music Monday." Traditional Irish music, played live mind you, is so soothing and it totally matches Hartley's cozy ambiance. Irish Bars in New York City are fairly common. Some of them are truly authentic. And others are run by some guy who has never been the Ireland, then slaps an Irish name on the place, and it become a typical Bro bar. You have to be careful. Where Irish bars aren't so typical is Bed-Stuy. For Saint Patrick's Day this year I figured I'd check out something close to home and hope for the best. And that's exactly what I got. Desires for Saint Patrick's Day include, avoiding packed crowds, having some tasty Irish beers along with some whiskey, chowing on some genuine Irish food, and avoiding Manhattan at all costs (Its amateur hour) After some research I figured Hartley's was the place to start the day. I knew it wasn't that big but if we got there at the right time, we'd be good. We arrived around one and it just right. Not dead, but not crowded either. The bartenders were doing their thing, slinging back beers. After a bit we got a table and ordered some grub. Soda bread, Irish Stew, and one of the most unbelievable beef sandwiches I ever had. Eventually it was starting to get too packed and some guy starting waltzing in wearing some frat boy outfit and started to give me PTSD of a Saint Patrick's day of long ago in Manhattan. It was time to go. Passed by later and saw people were falling out of the place. We beat the crowd. But I'm glad I came. I'll be sure to come back, their brunch sounds great. The staff is friendly. This review is long overdue. I first came here with a friend who discovered this then new spot before I even noticed it despite it being closer to my apartment. We sought refuge on one of the coldest day of the year-- seriously, folks were advised not to go outside for long if at all-- and found it super cozy inside. We had cocktails and some soda bread to share that night. I've since been with a few friends and solo once. I generally order a cocktail, either off their menu-- the vibrant pink cacti drink is my current favorite-- or a classic. But I also have had beer sometimes. Aside from the soda bread (yum!), I've also enjoyed the brussel sprouts (yum yum!). The bartenders are always super sweet. When not with friends, I've chatted up some kind folks at the bar. I like the vibes here. Perfect little bar for a quaint evening or afternoon of drinking. The ambiance both inside and out at Hartley's makes it the kind of neighborhood gem-of-a-pub that I dream about. Inside, the space is small and intimate with a variety of seating options (tables, stools at the bar, and high-tops). FYI, they have outlets everywhere! The cocktail program is unpretentious, as is the service. I had a well rye and later, a glass of a French red blend. The wine didn't impress me, but the food did. I ordered radishes (comes with butter and coarse salt) and Irish beef stew. Both were a welcome relief after a day of travel and airport snacks. I love Hartleys but it's difficult to express why without just dragging someone there. The closest I've gotten is: "Imagine you went to a friend's well appointed living room and for some serendipitous reason there was a full bar and kitchen. Oh and every Monday a bunch of lads come 'round and play rousing Celtic music" The food is the best kind, very simple, but made with the best ingredients and well. The folks working that day were as kind as could be, even as drunker and drunker folks showed up (or were created in house). This small Irish pub is my favorite in the city. The aesthetic is clean and minimalist. The white walls keep the interior bright while the wooden furnishings give the place a warm feel. The bartenders are easygoing and kind. Happy hour has great drink prices and the food is authentic and *so* good. My favorite is the house-spiced beef sandwich on soda bread. This place is very unassuming while having a lovely, clean, charming and cozy vibe inside. I'm not a big drinker during the week, but they have live Irish music on Monday nights! So while a Monday night beer is not normally in the cards for me, it has been a few times. It's always a great atmosphere. My hubby & I went to Hartley's in search of an low-key evening where we could enjoy a few drinks and grab a bite to eat. After traveling throughout Ireland, we had fallen in love with delicious food, brown bread and the Irish hospitality. Hartley's is the first bar in Brooklyn we have ever visited that was most reminiscent of our time in the Emerald Isle. Food: - Brown bread: DELICIOUS, my first bite into the bread immediately transported me back to Ireland. It was warm, fresh and perfect. I couldn't help but smother it in the creamy butter and a sprinkle of salt. - Cheddar toastie with bacon: open-faced brown bread with cheddar cheese and bacon perfectly toasted was perfect to share between me and my husband. - House-spiced beef of soda bread: STAR of the show! The beef was flavorful and melt in your mouth good. I will crave this sandwich on a regular basis. It was THAT good. Drinks: - Great selection of beer on tap as well as a cider and a few different options for red/white wine as well as some delicious cocktails. Basically, there is a drink for everyone. Ambiance: - A lovely, no frills pub. Small in size, but that adds to the cozy charm. Overall, the drinks were great and the food was delicious! Pretty good food and surprisingly so because this place looks like a casual Irish dive bar. Its also hidden on a side street so you wouldn't even know its there. Has a very romantic low light setting. The bartenders are friendly and they're prompt with bringing Food out. My favorite dish was the Brussels sprouts. Cooked and flavored well.
