Mugs Ale House is a solid choice for a pub. I came in last Tuesday night and was happy that I decided to have dinner, a few drinks and watch the end of an MLB playoff game here (Red Sox Win!). Mugs Ale House has a good selection for drafts and a very well stocked bar. The food menu was also decent with a good selection of what you might want to order at a pub. I sat at the bar and the service was exceptional. The decor was the classic pub style. For my meal, I ordered a skirt steak with mashed potatoes and it was exactly what I was expecting. For drinks, I had two different IPA's and was happy with both. I also ordered a couple of Jameson's ... There was an excellent selection of whiskey if I had wanted something that was not basic. All in all, I was not blown away, but I definitely recommend Mugs Ale House. In summary, I would be a regular if I lived within 8 blocks. read more

Never go during the day shift Monday through Thursday, 11-6, there is only one bartender and most of them are jaded by the neighborhood. However night crew and the rotating kitchen are a great experience they will try there best to get to you try not to be "that guy/girl": The one who thinks there time is worth more than anyone else that also needs to order. Damn I usually love Mugs but had the strangest experience last night. Came with a bunch of friends to watch the USWNT play in the World Cup. Bartender refused to turn the volume on the TV and repeatedly told us it's "not a big enough game" to play the volume. More than half the bar was there to watch the game but the bar tender simply refused and said it "wasn't the right vibe." Half the bar left and went next door to Kilo Bravo which had the game playing full blast on every TV they had - packed with fans, where everyone was able to enjoy. read more

Really weird experience. I came in pretty late with my friend on a Friday night, we were visiting from our of town. My friend went to get pizza, I grabbed a beer, I started talking with another guy at the bar, then my friend came back, and the bartender went fully bipolar (not in an offensive term, but an analysis of his actions). He started screaming at me to leave because it was closing time and I was smirking, which he didn't like. If it was closing time, just say so, don't make it awkward and don't single out one person in a bar with several other people. What made it really weird is he was friendly and offered a decent beer selection a few minutes earlier, then suddenly unprovoked flipped a switch. Honestly, I think he was trying to show off for the two girls at the bar. I found it super weird, unprofessional, and creepy. I joined a coed softball league over the summer that was designed specifically for singles. Hey, don't judge...desperate times call for desperate measures. Mugs Ale House was our sponsor bar, so all 144 of us strolled in every Saturday for pretty much the whole summer after our weekly Saturday games. We were dirty. We were smelly. We were loud and obnoxious. Let's face it...we were assholes. But that didn't stop the waitresses from taking our orders and the other patrons from congratulating us on our wins (okay, we didn't win much). Honestly, this bar deserves 5 stars just for dealing with us every week. Mugs has a very impressive beer selection, with a TON of local/microbrewery options. I appreciate this, because anything Anheuser/MillerCoors makes me want to vom. The food menu is pretty vegetarian/vegan friendly. They changed their menu not too long ago and there's definitely an improvement in the variety of options available. Way to go Mugs! The ambience here is really nothing special, and you end up smelling like burgers and fries when you leave, but the phenomenal diversity of the beer taps makes up for this. So many styles, and almost all at reasonable prices. They even usually have a beer special with one beer at $3. Once I had a really rare Belgian ale for that price, and it felt super. The bartenders don't really keep me coming back, but they basically do their job, which is all you can really ask. It kind of has that neighborhood feel, where if you know the staff, you're in. There's seemingly always people in here daydrinking, and not being as obnoxious as the places closer to the train stop. They have a pretty enormous beer menu here. I was definitely impressed. $6 for most of their craft beers on tap on not happy hour prices on a Saturday afternoon . So not too bad. I liked this bar a lot. They had a large tap list that had a diverse set of interesting beers from around the country and almost no mediocre beers on it. The prices for beer were not bad $7-9 and it was reasonably spacious. The service was good and where we sat in the back was reasonably quiet. We did not have any food so I can't speak to the quality of that. We went there yesterday Saturday August 13th around 4pm and got very very rudely told by the bartender(bald guy with an accent) extremely rudely told us NO WAY NO SERVICE DOG ALLOWED and even had the rudest manner of asking 'what service do you need the dog for'? After 15 years of walking by, how have I never gone in this strangely wonderful smelly dive bar / beer Mecca? $7 for a 20oz Barrier Money IPA draft and Framboise on draft for the wife....and a full greasy dive bar menu (as opposed to the artisanal fire escape grown kale grilled cheese sandwiches at most great beer bars)...I am in heaven. If you are into beers, check the properly updated draft list on their website and I guarantee you will be dragging your ass to this place too. And to reiterate, this is a wonderfully smelly dive bar with awesome friendly staff. It's not where you are going to being bringing out of town guests (unless they are really into beers) but that is part of what makes it fantastic. read more

My opinion of this place has has gone way, way down over the years. Mugs was a mighty player back in the day that there were relatively few craft beer bars. But, now, not so much. I might not have commented, but a recent event pushed me over. The negative reviews here are right; the food is average at best, the service is usually abrupt, and the place does not smell good. All these things speak of a management that is absent, or present but with a f*ck you attitude. But then, a new thing. Mugs participates in Get Real Craft Beer Passport, which allows the purchaser to have a beer at over 35 bars. While most bars allow the passport holder to select from most or all of the beers they have on tap, Mugs douchebag management limits you to 3 beers. Totally contrary to the spirit of the thing. I am convinced that the owners are actively giving the public the finger. So, right back at you, boys! read more

Whiskey Brooklyn had a line out the door at 2 AM, so we ended up here. good service, clean bathrooms, and there's pinball machines. fairly quiet at that hour but still a few patrons. one guy in our group was ticked off they don't make "bomb" shots (as in, Jagerbombs), but I was perfectly fine with slamming down Jameson shots. solid beer selection on hand too. Mugs is a oasis of normality in a neighborhood overrun by hipsters. Ahh, so many beers . . when I first visited this place, I was in awe of how many beers there were to try. They even have the coveted Sam Adams Utopias, which will run you $350 a bottle. The waitresses are rude, they will disappear forever to chat, they aren't mindful of their patrons at all. I've gone back to many times and dealt with repeatedly horrible service that I've almost sworn the place off completely. I hate to say it, sometimes it's all about the beer . . but if you can't have a seat and expect good competent service from the wait staff, forget it. I'll find somewhere else. The service is ok although I have had two bad experiences. -They gave me a hard time about me showing them my ID and the waitress corrected my pronunciation of a scotch I ordered. She needed to chill. -The service is rude, I won't go into the details, but trust me, I have had a couple issues The crowd is an older scene (30s and 40s) which is rare for the neighborhood. This is a great and chill spot. It can get pretty crowded on the weekends but was delightfully empty on a sunday evening. I started with a sweet Hoe which is a combination of the Lambics framboise and another ale. The combination is a light and floral beer that is not overly sweet and not bitter. My date had the hoegarden that was refreshing and citrusy. I have always been a fan of the food there as every great bar needs great food. I ordered half the roasted chicken with a side of sweet potato fries. My date ordered the williamsburger. My chicken, while good prefectly sat on a bed of what would have been fluffy mashed potatoes and white gravy. But the gravy was not reduced and was completely watery. My chicken was floating on an island of potato soup. And had it not been for the sweet potato fries and the delicious brooklyn lager/maple syrup dipping sauce, the dish would have been a complete fail. The burger, from what i hear was decent. I think I jinxed this place. Unfortunately my last two experiences there were less than mediocre. My last williamsburger was pathetic and so was the service. I surely hope it's something temporary, change of chef or something like that. But here is what I thought of it until a month ago and most points stand, except for the quality of their food : I went to Mugs Ale House on a date for the first time, with my now - fiancee, and I was impressed by his selection. Good beer, good food, not pricy, not pretentious. I'm not a burger expert, but for the price, their burgers are hard to beat. I'd especially recommend the Willimasburger. And for the beer drinker, this is paradise. They have really extensive selection, whole lots of Lambick, and other Belgian beers. I'm taking one star out because I think it can get a bit too dark indoors for a restaurant. It's kind of too hard to see what you're eating, which is not too comfortable. I keep going there though, when I'm in my meat eating mood, and don't want to handle a trip to Manhattan. read more
