Love this place! For $8 you can get a really delicious, strong frozen piña colada and add a floater for only $1 extra. They are fantastic and the convenient location close to the beach makes it really nice to grab a drink while lounging at the rockaways. The staff is very friendly as well. They are technically (although I feel like they always did unofficially) offering takeaway drinks now for covid that require a food purchase...but good news! You can add on a hot dog for only an extra dollar as well. Is the wiener great? Certainly not, but it's edible, and if it allows me to take a drink to the beach then who cares. The only major, major downside of this place is that there's no outside seating!! It would be so lovely to sit on a balcony or porch and enjoy a drink but unfortunately pre- or during-covid that's not an option. How can I pass up a chance to review a spot named after me*? Connolly's is an unassuming little spot in Far Rockaway that very much feels like it's built-in someone's house. That's because, for all intents and purposes, it is. Open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, this cash-only bar serves up draft Guinness, draft truly, and some solid vodka lemonades. The crowd is very much made up of locals, and all seemed to know the bartender personally (my kinda place). While the vibe was markedly old school bar meets basement, there were some modern touches like a huge TV playing red bull surfing (which was absolutely mesmerizing), and a great darts setup that was very much in use the whole time we were hanging. The bar itself looks like it's seen many generations of beach bum sit at it, yet would fit in well in the Hamptons. Connolly's will be crowded during the summer months appealing to everyone besides those usual beach goers. The bar has that unique old traditional pub ambience with a burst of awesome excitement. The bar has been known to have been a hangout spot for lifeguards, local firefighters, and many other Far Rockaway locals and especially those coming from a boardwalk stroll or bicycle ride where they would just step off the walkway down 95th street for some relaxing fun. Thanks to the owners, they have made Connolly's a Rockaway unofficial landmark for more than 30 plus years. And we are hoping the establishment will remain for many years to come. What I found quite interesting is the pictures that make up most of the bar's walls. One might find someone familiar, such as somebody's parent in a Connolly's bikini contest. From what I have learned, most of the photographs are from the 1980s and 1990s. Younger folks that visit the bar could possibly see their parents on the walls. Oh yea! There are not any secrets kept at Connolly's. Although I am no longer living nearby Connolly's, I still visit the bar every summer to experience the electrifying atmosphere and to remind me of all the times I have appreciated my summers on Far Rockway Beach. read more

I don't know what rock I've been under but thanks to my friend Joey I had the ultimate Rockaway Beach experience. After we spent the whole day lounging with sand in our toes and warm sun we started packing up. And Joey is like "you have to go Connolly's and get a piña colada" no trip to the Rockaways is complete without said beverage at said bar. And when Joey vouches for a place, I automatically know it's gonna be a good one. My friend and I arrived with all our bags and parasols. We quickly got service and ordered a piña colada. Matt the bartender asked if we wanted a "floater". This means there is a shot poured on top. So you can save yourself the embarrassment of asking. I will say the cocktail was cute as a button with a cherry on top and a swirl printed paper straw. And the flavor was perfectly smooth, frozen, not too sweet and just perfection. People came in waves from the beach to get these boozy goodies. The bar was covered in them. I only saw a couple of Buds in the counter mix. The bar itself has cool little booths and has that vintage cabin feel that I'm a sucker for. The crowd loves the bar and the outside for those smokers. It was simply bodacious. A simple dive bar with a dart board and outdoor front area located in a beautiful Victorian house within mere minutes away from Rockaway Beach Boardwalk. The reviews are indeed accurate for the quality of Piña Coladas of $10.00 as it is a perfect cool down on a hot humid day served in a discreet styrofoam or white paper cup which can be taken outside of Connolly's premise. I prefer my Piña Coladas plain (without flavor) and maraschino cherry or two cherries. I am profoundly happy that it is not prepared strong. I was immediately able to attain a seat at the bar undisturbed. The bar tenders are very efficient, attentive and welcoming all patrons local and from beyond the Rockaways with sincere smiles who offer patrons the option to make your pina colada a floater (aka an extra shot of rum for a stronger drink). Note: cash only and facilities are microscopic small of small stalls, small sink and small standing space. Everyone was afraid it was going to get turned into more apartment buildings by greedy developers in an already overcrowded, overdeveloped area. The community board has obviously been compromised in its integrity by allowing such development. ONLY COMPLAINT IS THE SMALL SIZE OF THE CUPS PROVIDED FOR THE ICONIC FROZEN DRINKS, Please step it up at least an ounce or two! These drinks are awesome but for the price, they should be bigger! Delicious frozen pina colada! That has to be said because twice I felt like I was enjoying dessert. The mudslide took awhile to be ready (like half an hour) but we kept chill with pina coladas and the bartender reassuring us that frozen was coming along. The music- flashbacks of old rock and roll days with bands like guns and roses and matchbox twenty. The ambience- a bit dark and artsy with lot of memories scattered about (old lifeguard pictures and close ups.) Bartenders were friendly and laid back. While waiting at the bar I did notice an inconsistency on prices. When ordering two pina coladas it was $14- so $7 each- when people ordered three pina coladas it was $24-$8 each. And with that; no sooner did we have our hands on the handle when the inside lock clicked to the open position, perfect timing. Clearly a historic storied Rockaway emporium from outside, yet not what I expected on the inside. Envisioning a salty dog bartender and weather beaten tables and chairs, I couldn't have been more off base. Sitting in front of my perfectly poured Pacifico with a little bitty shot 'o' whisky, I lapped up the surroundings, a first class operation all the way with good 'ole American country craftsmanship that must have built this sturdy structure with pretty inlay and appropriate brass. This is a Rockaway staple however this place smells like crap/sewage/musty every time I've entered. To sit and try to enjoy a drink is hard especially when there's a wafting odors coming from every corner of that bar! Once you open the front door it hits you!! I'd say they need to give that place a good power wash once a week. The bathroom has a fresher smell...... My husband and I stopped by this bar before getting some lunch nearby. He found out via the internet (Google reviews?) that it was known for their frozen piña coladas. When we arrived, there were 2 empty stools at the bar waiting for us. ;) YAY! We ordered 2 piña coladas and the bartender charged us $12 for them. Then, when we were done and ordered one more each, we were charged $8 for each one. (???) *scratching my head* I'm not sure why the price changed within 10 minutes. Here is the best way to visit Connolly's: Wake up at 8 am. Put on good walking shoes. Walk 18 miles from Greenpoint in Brooklyn to Rockaway. You will arrive around 4 in the afternoon and you will be sore and possibly sunburned. You will also be very very thirsty. Dip your feet in the ocean. Sit on the sand. Find the nearest bar. I will save you the trouble of doing any searching: It's Connolly's. Drink the best beer you have ever tasted. Also, the best pina coladas (though they might earn that title whether or not they follow an 18-mile walk). You will not care that the pina coladas are served to you in styrofoam.
