There's no better place than to end the summer than at the beach. Listening to kids yelling as they jump into the waves, jets rounding out from JFK overhead, seagulls having brawls over the garbage cans, the crash of the surf, smelling the salt air and ...music. Beach 97 has this great bar and food stand area. All summer they've had bands outside on Saturday evenings so you can grab some food and vibe on the boardwalk or nearby on the beach. The food is pretty great. I would recommend the burger stand (burgers are small though) and the Columbian food stand (empanadas and apple soda for the win). Surf rock, 70s rock and Dead cover bands, lots of incense abounds, and everyone is having a good time. The crowd is diverse, all ages and types of people, which is nice to be around. This is an amazing hang out place. It's an outdoor indoor place with a dance floor and dj. Dance floor is outside and it's so fun. It's on boardwalk of rockaway and has nice drinks food and music. They must use very cheap meat. My burger had a bunch of huge fat balls in it. I only ate a few bites. Gross. The place looks filthy. Great place to grab a drink at lovely Rockaway Beach! Located around the 97th st portion of the beach. Their micheladas are fantastic. Made with Modelo Especial, I always start with a couple of those when I visit Rockaway. They also have $4 Lionshead or 4 for $10 (cans). Bartenders are nice and friendly. This review is extremely limited in that it is based on how extremely tasty the quesadilla suiza "The Work" was. The wait was very long, 40 minutes for a quesadilla, but there were a lot of people in line. My friend and I were half full from lunch and only wanted a snack, so we shared the ginormous suiza that was cooked to perfection with golden crust and melted gooey monterey jack cheese, loaded with avocado and pica de gallo. Low Tide Bar is a tiny booth on the boardwalk at 98 street. This is the only place on the boardwalk to get alcohol but the prices are pretty decent considering the lack of competition. They only serve beer $4 - $6, wine $8 & sangria $9. There is plenty of seating and in the evenings they have music (a live band on the day I was there) which makes for a nice place to chill after a day on the beach. The downside: I wish they served hard liquor. They could use more servers when the beach closes at 6pm because the line gets really long. Always the longest line of any of the vendors. read more

We ended up really by chance as we were waking in the board walk and it was a very pleasant surprise ! The place is tiny but has a really nice bar inside that opens on the outside tables right in front of the beach sidewalk. Very laid back atmosphere and friendly staff. The food was very good especially the French fries :) Will definitely be back and definitely recommend it for a quick "mid beach day break" if you're in Rockaway ! read more

Here is where they sell beer to go with the yummy noshes for sale at the Rockaway Beach food court. As a seller of beverages they're not great -- the frozen drinks are low-octane, stick with beer. However, they provide the fuel for a fun beach party taking place outside, where beach-goers of all walks of life congregate and converse at picnic benches. Over $4 Budweisers, I talked to an older African-American lady about her short first marriage that led her to move to North Dakota and a doll of a Peruvian girl about men and giant turquoise platform shoes. Regardless the long line bartender was serving people cutting the line (and she saw that) which I think is unethical. and the second thing is their SANGRIA. Unfortunately when I was there, a girl who rode the boardwalk all day on her three wheeler bike selling " Fresh Fruit on a Stick," moonlighted as a DJ after her day shift selling much less than fresh fruit. She was a real professional, making out with her girlfriend while she played nothing but female rap artists. No variety. DJ Fruit on a Stick wouldn't take requests and was actually rude when asked.
