Hush puppies with ham and butter
Shawn H.

This was excellent. The chargrilled oysters were the best bite of the night. Trout dip, crab rice, and shrimp loaf were all amazing and definitely reorder candidates. The hush puppies with ham and butter were excellent as well, but I could see potentially subbing those next time.

My wife has been really hyping this spot up the past few months after she had a great first experience. We managed to land a 5pm resy about a week or so prior. They do look like they do walk-ins though at the bar so come early if you want those. We ordered: - Fry Basket - 1/2 dozen chargrilled oysters - Shrimp Loaf - Blackened Swordfish Belly I'll say the fry basket was my favorite just because I'm a sucker for fried seafood, but everything was great. I hate saying a restaurant uses quality ingredients, but at Strange Delight it's very obvious all the seafood and ingredients they source are quality. Everything is served piping hot and delicious. If you like seafood, especially cajun-inspired, the food will hit. But beyond the food, there were a few hiccups with service that were worth mentioning: - The time spacing between our dishes were kind of long, we later realized it's because the waitress forgot to put in our order of oysters. Thankfully they comped us free dessert. - At one point during the service, it seemed like front of house kept playing with the lights and turning them on and off for like 5-10min. Pretty minor, but definitely distracting. - The spacing between tables where we sat was a little tight. So when the table next to us got seated halfway through our meal, as they were making their way to the inside seat, they ended up knocking over my wife's drink. Not the fault of the restaurant, and it's cold so everyone has their winter coats on, but definitely felt a little cramped (but not like sardines, pun intended). Staff quickly replaced the drink though which was nice. Overall, I really liked Strange Delight! Had a couple quirks that made dinner service interesting, but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who lives in Fort Greene area or seafood lovers in general. The prices are a bit steep, but again, I think you're paying for some very quality food in a very well decorated space. Great place for date night or a fancier meal with family if you're not trying to completely break the bank.

Overall rating: 4.7 I have been searching NYC for charbroiled oysters for the last 10 years. I think I've been to every Nola spot tbh. I just did a walk-in and they sat me in what felt like a walk-in section.. it was kind of awkward, bc everyone was sitting in the back. The service was good and very friendly. I told them I was there just for the charbroiled oysters which they respected. It is a fancy spot so 3x for $18 wasn't too too terrible. The oysters were a lot larger than I was expecting, but I was missing the char taste. So sad. They were still good, I just didn't get my itch. I'm not sure if what happened next was normal, but they offered me some banana pudding on the house! It was so sweet. It was so good omg. I might come back just for that. I definitely want to come back on a date or with friends to try items on the menu. I know this place is known to fill up fast, but it seemed like the bar area was easily walk-in friendly.

NYE dinner Strange Delight was delightful! We unfortunately were unable to sit in the interior dining room and sat at by the bar instead. It was still lovely seeing how some of the food were put together. We started off with chargrillled oysters as a palate starter. Slightly different than my experience in NOLA but tasty nonetheless. Then had the spareribs which had a lovely kick. It's mouthwatering savory, and we left nothing but the bone. Next came the gumbo. I was so surprised by how filling it was. I thought I needed more rice but it was the perfect amount. Lastly, we ended with the Creole crumb-crusted black fish. A hearty meal all around. We were then surprised by their house bread pudding. We left satiated. Great customer service and beautiful setup.

We had a great dining experience at strange delight. We were running a little bit late but the staff still accommodated us. It was interesting that this restaurant does not have a number to call but they do have an automated system to confirm your online reservation. We got a good mix of food: - cured scallops - charbroiled oysters with breadcrumbs - swordfish belly - creole blackfish - Hokkaido uni The food came out pretty fast - one by one. The Hokkaido uni had too much onions that it over powered the uni. The rest of the dishes were good but nothing special. For the price you would think each dish would come with more components but it was a bit disappoint. The one dish that I thought was unique was the swordfish belly. The belly was so soft it felt like you were eating a firm tofu. Each meal always ends with a complimentary bread pudding as desserts. The bread pudding was actually the highlight of the entire meal. The seatings felt a little cramped with the small tables and high chairs. The kitchen is an open concept so the whole restaurant smells like food. Just know whatever clothes you wear, it will be soaked with the scent of food.

I made a reservation for 3 for a Saturday afternoon but I'm not sure I would have needed it. There are 3 seating options: standard, counter or bar. I love counter seating but since there were 3 of us we chose a standard table for easy socializing. I had the Having Fun since 1933 and it was a great choice. It was tasty and strong. For my meal I picked the catfish nuggets with the mac and cheese, red beans (they have meat) and cornbread. Everything was delicious. The mac & cheese didn't taste like any of ever had but it was delicious. I'd definitely go back and try one of the seafood towers.

Came here yesterday for lunch. Overall the wait staff was nice and the location was cute and modern. I would've loved to give this place a 5 star rating but the food (my food) came out cold. I had the sweet potato, mac and cheese, fried shrimp and a salad. (I think the food would've tasted better if it was warm or even hot.).

I was strangely delighted! Southern charm meets Brooklyn's flare ! These tapas are made to share and do listen to the specials as they are truly worth it. I appreciated the waiter telling us to put everything in at once but the dishes were served on time one after another talk about perfect timing. They served each dish and waited for us to visual dive in and taste before clearing table for the next course. It was well done ! It's a must come back to try other items on the menu ! Food ! Well what can I say I was hooked once I tasted the charbroiled oysters well seasoned and clean aftertaste. The fried chicken was moist and flavorful! The pickles were a nice counterbalance ! Finger licking good! Must save room for dessert!

This spot has become one of my favorite seafood restaurants. Everything on the menu was so good! We came for lunch and ordered a shrimp loaf with a side of watercress salad to share as well as two of the seafood & three that got served on a fun lunch tray. I love all the salad sides (watercress salad, Chinese broccoli salad, and shrimp salad). They were all amazing and it's awesome that they add dill to the salads which makes them taste super good. I also love the smoked fish dip and the blacken catfish. The ambiance at the restaurant was great and well lit. We were situated on the bar seatings in the back of the restaurant and Simon really took good care of us by making great suggestions and keeping us posted on when our food would be coming. Thank you Simon!

Strange Delight brings a taste of New Orleans to Brooklyn with real style. The green-tiled facade, soft globe lights, and hum of the open kitchen make it instantly welcoming. It's casual, lively, and a little chaotic in a very Brooklyn way. The food, though, is often excellent. The Mirliton Som Tam was bright and crunchy, the complimentary[1] hush puppies with trout roe were light and buttery, and the Charbroiled Oysters (prepared with black pepper garlic butter, parmesan cheese, and breadcrumbs) were smoky, rich, and pure indulgence. The Blackened Swordfish Belly served with watercress salad and creole mustard cream was melt-in-your-mouth good although a bit on the heavy side, and the Fried Shrimp Basket nailed that perfect crispy comfort. Where things faltered was the flow and price point. Our drinks arrived after the food, which made the meal feel a bit disjointed. Odd to start a dinner with a salad, and to get cocktails only later. Service was friendly but slightly scattered. And while the atmosphere reads easygoing and diner-casual, the prices lean toward upscale dining[2]: The oysters are $6 apiece; the shrimp basket is $28; the swordfish belly is $36. Ouch! I'm glad I tried it, and I'd recommend it for anyone craving a high-quality New Orleans fix with some Brooklyn flair. But at these prices, it's probably a one-time visit for me. Still, that complimentary milk bread pudding with Sazerac custard at the end? Worth every bite. ----------------------------- [1] They come complimentary if you use their Black Bird app to pay. What a find! It took my local #2 son (out of four) here in New York to turn me on to a fish shanty this good, that I'd come back tomorrow and order the exact same dinner! Strange Delight is the "Real Deal" in the restaurant world. This place was packed, to overflowing and I could absolutely see why. Everything we ordered tonight was exceptional: * Charbroiled Oysters - with Black Pepper Garlic Butter, Parm, Breadcrumbs * BBQ Shrimp - with White Ale, Worcestershire Sauce, Black Pepper * Fried Shrimp Loaf - with Milk Bread, Duke's, Giardinera, Iceberg * The Salad - Iceberg, Italian Dressing, Giardinera * Mirliton Som Tam Cucumber, Toasted Cashew, Fish Sauce Dressing * Roasted Ora King Salmon Caramelized Cauliflower Purée, Sliced Almonds, Green Grapes * A dessert that wasn't on the menu that was excellent but I couldn't tell you what it was The service was stellar, the ambience was young and hip (something I'm not, but......) and Strange Delight had a very cool vibe going on which I fell totally into. I Loved This Restaurant and I most certainly be back.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this place! I came once for regular dinner and once for HH. I think HH drinks are the most worth. Upon walking in you'll see the bar and a few high tops, but the main seating area is in the back. HH is only available 5-7PM in the front area. Oysters are $2 during HH. There is a seafoo; tower HH deal but I didn't think it worth the price for oysters at least. The oysters are on the smaller side. The loaves are their take on poboys. While $27 is pricey for a catfish poboy, I've enjoyed it the 2 times I've had it (and split with another person) The shrimp basket is also delicious but only 5-6 shrimp for the whole thing. I think the $15 martinis during HH is the most valuable thing on the menu. I think there are 2 restrooms. Service is friendly, and they've given free bread pudding dessert the two times I've come. I'd love to come back for the caviar deal.

Entrée: Swordfish belly.

There's a lot I could say, but I'll TRY to keep this concise. Decor & Ambiance: 4.5/5 The space is nicely decorated and works well for a casual date or dinner with friends. That said, the music was extremely loud, so loud that conversation required raising our voices. I actually had to ask for the volume to be turned down. Service: 1/5 We were seated at 9:00 p.m. and did not receive our food until 9:45 p.m. We were close to leaving due to the long wait. During that time, no one checked in to see how we were doing or offered an update on the delay. It wasn't until we mentioned that we were about to leave that we received a vague and lackluster explanation. Food: 2/5 We ordered the swordfish belly and the New Year's special black-eyed pea stew, along with seltzer water with lime. The portion of swordfish was extremely small... more appropriate for an appetizer than an entrée! I've been to many restaurants where appetizers are large enough to be entrées; this was the opposite. The black-eyed pea stew had decent flavor, but the texture was inconsistent, with some beans undercooked. A thicker, creamier consistency would have improved the dish. Overall, the food tasted rushed and lacked care. Despite the menu's New Orleans influence, none of the dishes reflected authentic New Orleans flavors. I've spent enough time in New Orleans and even had excellent New Orleans-style food in NYC to know the difference. The highlight of the meal was the complimentary bread pudding, which was genuinely delicious. It was perfectly moist, nicely sweet, and topped with a lovely cream sauce. Price: The total bill was $100 for the swordfish belly, black-eyed pea stew, and two glasses of water. Final Thoughts / Rating: 2/5 I wouldn't return. The service was slow, the food was mediocre, and the price point felt high for what was served. I hope they improve with time but I wont be rushing back any time soon. Sad, because the ambiance, minus the loud music was nice.

I also had multiple chums from Brooklyn endorsing this spot, so everything seemed to be lining up for an excellent night. Unfortunately, I'm starting to think you just can't go to places like this on a Tuesday, but maybe it was just a bad night. I got here way before my chum due to our work schedules, literally 45 minutes or so. It wasn't 6pm yet and while there were definitely customers in both the bar area and the backyard outdoor section, it was pretty chill. I was able to secure a small table next to the bar right by the open window in the front (probably because the sun was glaring down on it, which wasn't an issue 10 minutes later) and just chilled out for a while, enjoying the excellent warm weather. This was the highlight of the experience, which unfortunately my chum did not get to enjoy. A lot of this was just unfortunate timing, I think. As I was waiting for my chum, people were practically streaming into the bar, probably about 25 or so, which I watched with increasing trepidation. Pretty much all of them wanted a drink, and there was only one bartender. They did not fix that problem until well into my chum's visit, so there was literally just the one guy making a gazillion drinks for about 45 minutes. Just no reason for that at all, especially given that they DID have the resources to divert and had a young woman back there at a certain point. But once I saw how crazy it was getting, I tried to pre-emptively order a second round, which he forgot about and had to ultimately be reminded of. It took literally half an hour to get the second drink. When my chum arrived, she went up to the bar to order her own drink and some of the arancini. She came back 10 minutes later and said she wasn't given the opportunity - THAT is completely insane. If you're so swamped that customers have to wait that long to even order much less get their drinks, you need help. Not clear where the disconnect was, but what started out as a great experience pretty much crash landed. Really disappointing. The crowd did thin out ultimately but the damage had been done. We were able to get the drinks but didn't bother with the additional app because we didn't want to risk missing a big chunk of the Nets game. So by not being even remotely attentive for a significant period of time, they left money on the table. I will say that the bartender himself maintained his professionalism throughout, and just kept making the drinks. Pretty much the opposite of what would have happened on Bar Rescue. This was on management, not the bartender. The drinks WERE good, which also made the service problems a shame. I got the Witch Doctor, which featured bourbon, rosemary, maple and lemon. Really well made, and appropriate for the unseasonably warm evening - it's the kind of bourbon cocktail made for summer. Would absolutely get that again. And the food was very solid. The star of the night was the arancini, which were featured prominently on the apps menu right at the time and promoted as one of their big selling points - deservedly so. These were honestly some of the best rice balls I've had. The cheese in the middle emphasized the flavors and wasn't too dense or overwhelming, the balls were cooked perfectly, and the sauce (the underrated part of rice balls for me) was delicious. Huge recommend. I also got a margarita flatbread to share with my chum, and that was good as well. Everything was going to come up short to the arancini, but it hit the spot. As mentioned, this was a random Tuesday night when maybe they don't have their full crew ready to rock. Maybe it was a fluke crowd surge? I just don't know, but the bottom line was that they weren't prepared for the customers who came in and were already there, and that's a big problem. If you can't deliver the same quality that you do on the weekends and predictably busier times, then you shouldn't be open that early in the week. Hopefully they figure it out because there's a lot to like here.

I've made it a point to visit every vinyl listening bar that I learn of in town, after enjoying the shared experience of someone curating a select vinyl list in intimate spaces in Tokyo. Few have been able to replicate the experience, but Honeycomb Hi Fi Lounge comes close. That the space is narrow with just a few seats along the bar and a few tables mimics the Japanese experience best, where you can almost have it so the whole room is having one conversation together. The music is the focus. The cocktail menu is rather simple, and my Stormbringer drink, with dark rum and ginger beer was not anything to write home about, but $15 is pretty low for cocktails these days so I'll take it. My friend and I each order a cocktail, and are catching up. I'm from Brooklyn, however I no longer live here, and this was precious catch-up time with my friend. Then I get interrupted mid-sentence by the old-timer DJ from his low seat in a corner behind the bar. I had bumped the bar with my wrist (bumped my wrist watch as well, not deliberately) and then placed my hand down (granted- more than placed but definitely not slammed), and he decided to warn me that I COULD HAVE made his record skip. It was the Eagles or Santana (far from eclectic, but that's just me). I'm also 99% certain he turned the volume up afterwards, making it even harder to enjoy the company. After that interaction, I struggled to pick it back up with my friend, because I found that distraction very effing rude. When this "4th wall" gets broken down with service, it is hard to then enjoy the space in an uninhibited state. I am all for the Tokyo Vinyl Bar vibe, and I'm also for also giving talent an outlet to share their collection, but this interaction colored my experience, and I closed out after one drink and went elsewhere. I mentioned this to the bartender, and he was kind to offer a buy-back of a rare whiskey, which I did accept. 5 stars for the bartender, but 1 for my experience. I don't like to be harsh or unnecessarily cruel, but this is what it is. I have visited in the past and enjoyed myself. Nonetheless, I certainly won't be coming back.
